With the whole new glasses free 3D tech (at least for a gaming console) and everyone taking advantage of it, do you think the 3DS will be like the N64 was with mostly all 3D games or do you think some devs will make some nice looking 2D (as in... non-polygonal... you know) games too? We're already seeing some games (like one of the best 2D sidescrollers ever, Cave Story) being remade in 3D for the console. But with the advanced tech I know there could be amazing "flat" games too, if they decide to do some.
No! ofcource not! Why ells would it be called a '3'DS game?

Retro games, Modern games, all AWESOME!!!
Most definitely. I hope they make many games in those genres/styles. Miyamoto already said there's a New Super Mario Bros. being made for the system. The 3D effect would work well for new games in the Shantae, Wario Land/World, Contra, and Castlevania series. Shantae is the perfect side-scroller to demonstrate the system's 3D effect, because you already jump between the foreground and background in those games.
I'd like to see Mario and Luigi RPG 4, if that counts as sprites. But when you meant 2D pixel sprites, do you mean to say that the sprites could have depth using the 3D effect? Similiar to Super Mario Clash for the Virtual Boy?

Sorry if you misunderstood me. What i tied to say in short words is, if the PSP (which i consider a handheld powerful enough to generate good 3D graphics) has 2D pixel games, then the 3DS may be getting some too.
Oh no, I understood you, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that in the same way the PS1 had Castlevania: SoTN while the N64 had that 3D castlevania crap, there's a chance the same may happen here.
Of course I guess there were a couple DS games that didn't use the stylus, and I thought the same thing about that back then...
Like square enix and it's tendency to remake games in 3D for the DS and 2D for the PSP I think 2D sprites can look very good with 3D applied to them too.
But i think there must be atleast one company wanting to make a 2D game for the 3DS right now, even if only for 3DSware.
I don't see why not. I can already see another Kirby's Epic Yarn, Wario Land Shake or Muramasa on the 3DS. Why not? Those games looked beautiful! They have already shown a 3DS Paper Mario working which is KINDA 2D so I don't see why devs wouldn't be making some sprite based games on the 3DS.
You can already hear Nintendo working on a 2D sprite based game on the 3DS with the backdrop being pushed well into the screen.
Just to clarify here, I mean 2D as in games like ALttP, Muramasa, SMB, Pixeljunk Shooter and the like, not just the depthy stuff.
Thats why I most of the time refer to games with 3D modeling as 3D style because 2D games to me are side scrollers, 8-Bit, 16-bit and similar stuff.[Though there are games smash bros]
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
