Right after the Digital Event I was a little disappointed. I thought it was just an okay/good showing. However, the Treehouse live streaming and the Smash Invitational really helped to hit it out of the park this year. I love Nintendo but I usually think Sony or Microsoft "wins" the conference, but this year I honestly think that Nintendo is the champion. It's so great to see them trying this hard to please the consumers!
They have set many release windows and dates before so I'm not going to believe it until I can actually download it! I don't mind when it takes awhile for a game to be developed but you can't set a date then a week before say "Never mind!"
It's really sad to see people hating on the game before even playing it. I have been having a blast so far! And yes there are some bugs here and there but honestly it doesn't happen that much or they are so small that you can barely even notice they are there. If you're on the fence it's definitely worth the $10.
@TheWhiteFalcon It is a fantastic game! And you don't really need to have played the previous games in the series to have fun with PIkmin 3! It's definitely in my top 3 favorite games on Wii U.
@DimetriWarrior I know you mean well but I just have to say:
You said since the way it's rated, it's probably a good idea to leave out same-sex marriages? So if a male and female start a life together, get married, and have children that can go into an E rated game. But if a male/male or female/female start a life, get married, and raise children together then it should be rated what? R?
What about the children that have same-sex parents that play this game? What is it telling them? That their parents are glitches? And since some parents aren't mature enough to handle reality then you have to leave gay couples out?
I'm glad they finally explained themselves a little better but it's still not an excuse to leave out same-sex marriage. Just like in real life, if you don't like gay marriage then don't get gay married. In a simulation game like this why would I want to get married to a female if I am gay? I'm not going to buy it. But yes, it's good that they cleared the air of some of those issues.
@rastamadeus The point is most of the games are coming to PS4/Xbone (and yes a few to PS3/360) but none of them are coming to Wii U or Wii. Yeah Nintendo has a few really good exclusives coming out this year. But it's not enough to win people over. And the fact that PS4 sales have almost caught up to Wii U shows that.
And I own a Wii U and PS4. So I can tell you the Wii U is pretty barren.
@Assassinated Some of your points are a little harsh and exaggerated but for the most part I agree with you. I have been defending Nintendo and the Wii U for so long now but after yesterdays Direct and looking at the 2014 Wii U line up compared to PS4... It's really sad that Nintendo didn't surprise us with something. Most of the Direct was focused on the 3DS which isn't a smart business decision since the 3DS is already selling and already has many great games.
@rastamadeus Not including indies the Wii U has Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Smash, X, Bayonetta, Watch Dogs, and Hyrule Warriors slated to release this year.
Playstation 4 has Watch Dogs, Infamous, Drive Club, The Witcher 3, Game of Thrones Telltale, The Order 1886, Metal Gear Solid 5, Deep Down, Dying Light, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor and maybe Uncharted. So far... To say Wii U has a stronger lineup is hilarious.
It's really sad that the first Nintendo Direct of 2013 brought us huge new announcements and the first one of 2014 brought nothing exciting to the table. Their main focus is on the 3DS which isn't a smart business move since the 3DS is having no problems selling. The amount of games coming to PS4/Xbone in 2014 compared to Wii U is such a huge gap. Come on Nintendo... I defended you the first year the console was out but now it's just sad.
Finally they release A Link to the Past! Iwata's plans for Nintendo's future yesterday seemed very serious. I think he is finally realizing that he needs to give customers what they want!
I have owned a Wii U for over a year now and while I do enjoy the GamePad from time to time, Nintendo clearly doesn't know what else to do with it. The common consumers don't know what to do with it. And third party game developers don't know how to creatively use it. Ditch it and move on.
@Peach64 Probably not. Spring goes from end of March to end of June. They know Mario Kart moves systems so their projection wouldn't be as low if they knew Mario Kart was coming out in March.
@SammyOfMobius Unfortunately I wouldn't get your hopes up. I assumed A Link to the Past would be releasing alongside the European launch and of course nothing.
They teased Super Mario Bros 3 at the end of Summer and it's STILL not here. I don't get what's taking so long. And if they can release A Link to the Past in Europe then they can release it in NA.
I really don't get Nintendo sometimes. So many people are willing to buy those two games and it will cost them very little.
I remember when a lot of users got mad at me for saying Wii U is only going to sell 25-30 million units in its lifespan. And that's actually an optimistic number. "Just wait until September-December! The Wii U software and hardware sales will kill the competition!" The games aren't selling because a lot of people sadly don't want a Wii U. Even a lot of Nintendo fans don't have a Wii U. I was optimistic but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo announced a new console in a couple years to play catchup and do a complete rebranding.
@8thGenConsoles Please show me where your figures are from that shows the Wii U has sold more than 4 million. Most people I know either don't know what a Wii U is or have 0 interest in one.
You'll be biting your tongue when sales for Wii U in a year will be hovering around 8 million still.
EDIT: And the Wii U sold less than 500,000 on launch weekend worldwide. PS4 isn't even released outside North America and those were day 1 sales (not weekend sales).
@boynerdrambling It is our job to worry and care... We need to see our favorite systems do well. Low sales means low cash inflow for Nintendo. It also means less positive publicity. In order to play your favorite games, that company needs to be doing well.
@CaviarMeths PS4 figures are very relevant. It shows that there is very high demand for PS4s and not Wii Us. The PS4 has already sold more than 1/4 of what Wii U has acheived and that's based on a one day North American figure...The Wii U has been out for a year. So yeah, you can compare them to see what the market wants.
@Mayleene X is a 2nd party game. Zelda U is a 1st party game. Please tell me some really awesome 3rd party games confirmed for Wii U (besides Watch Dogs, which yes does look awesome.)
@rjejr And to put things in perspective, the system has sold 4 million in 1 year. If they continue at the same pace then it would take a 12.5 year console life to reach 50 million... That just isn't going to happen.
@rjejr I'm a realist, not a fanboy. I love Nintendo and I love my Wii U but coming from someone in the Accounting and Marketing world, there is no way the system is going to sell more than 30 million tops.
Parents are telling their kids "You already have a console that can play Mario, Zelda, and Mario Kart" and don't see the need for Wii U. Wii Sports Club isn't going to sell systems... Those same people that loved Wii Sports won't care that the graphics were updated, new motion controls, and in HD. They aren't going to spend $300 for that when they essentially already have it for a console they own.
Yes, 3D World, Zelda U, Brawl, and Mario Kart are all going to help the system sell. But not above 30mil. Times are changing and Nintendo needs to think of something.
@rjejr The problem is that a lot of the casual market has switched over to tablets and phones. Plus, Just Dance and all of the major sports games are on Xbox One and PS4. There is no way the Wii U can be even half as successful as the Wii.
Anybody saying that Nintendo can do better than 25 million is very ignorant. Sony sold 1 million PS4s day 1 in North America alone... Nintendo hasn't even reached 4 million and it's been on the market for a year worldwide. Look at the consumer surveys... most people don't want a Wii U. Nintendo isn't really advertising the Wii U. I think 20-30 million is the range that it will hit.
While I'm not a big fan of EA, from a pure business perspective it does make sense. The fact that their games were ports isn't why they didn't sell well. Look at Call of Duty Ghosts. That wasn't a port to Wii U and it had less than 1% of the market on Wii U... I think the sad fact is that nobody owns a Wii U except for the really loyal Nintendo fans for our favorite Nintendo games.
As much as I want to see 3rd party support I can see where EA is coming from. But not even mentioning Nintendo once in their survey is insulting.
@SuperCharlie78 Yeah I thought that was very sneaky too. I feel like this is going to lead to a lot consumers being even more confused when they buy the special bundle and see that the game is nothing like what the commercial showed.
I thought they learned their lesson already by using the term "upgrade." I keep thinking their advertising phrases are going to improve but alas they do not. Nintendo... what are you doing? Stop using "upgrade!" An upgrade to me is like going from a 3DS to a bigger 3DSXL. Going from a smaller hard drive to a bigger hard drive. Using the words "new console" or "latest console that you can only play the latest games on" will clear any confusion with the casual audience.
I hate to agree with Pachter, but I think he's right when he says Wii U sales will top off around 30 million globally by the end of its life cycle. This week I have seen about 4-5 ads per hour for PS4 on major networks and about 2-3 for Xbox One. Anything for Wii U? No. How do they expect to sell consoles if they don't even advertise properly?
It's 2013 going on 2014. We now live in a world where we are all connected. They can easily make this available to other regions they just choose not to. Sad.
I'm with everyone else... At the very least this should be a 3DS/Wii U direct. Clearly the 3DS doesn't need more attention than the Wii U since both hardware and software are selling extremely well... I really don't understand Nintendo.
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until they change their ways. Nintendo is 5-8 years behind when it comes to online-play... And I still don't understand. MiiVerse is incredible but other than that everything else sucks. Microsoft and Sony are literally light years ahead. They understand the importance of both local play and online play. sigh
I love my Wii U and I love Nintendo's games. But if they don't get it together soon then I'm scared for their future.
I still think they should have had Mario Kart 8 ready before Christmas. Mario Kart is such a system seller. Instead they are waiting until spring... when kids can't afford a brand new system. Nintendo is once again really missing out this holiday season.
@DerpSandwich I agree 100%. I'm only an accounting major but I've taken enough marketing classes to know that Nintendo of America is doing everything wrong. They are the ones confusing the consumers.
