Re: August's Monster Hunter Generations DLC Celebrates Iconic Nintendo Franchises

jjx1000

@Mr_Zurkon @DTFaux Monster Hunter is definitely a commitment. I tried MH3U and hated it...it was overwhelming and I gave up about 12 hours in during the 1st water battles. I gave MH4U another chance after reading a ton of reviews and it was way more accessible and held your hand much more early in the game.

I think the biggest thing when starting out and part of the reason I struggled was I picked the wrong weapon. My skill level was poor and I was using dual blades which are pretty weak, then I tried the hammer which is powerful but very slow and I was fainting all the time. I made the switch for MH4U to the Great Sword to start and it was so much better. Now I mainly use the Switch Axe but I'll use the Great Sword from time to time, and my skill level has improved so I throw in the hammer once in awhile to keep things fresh.

I highly recommend grinding through the first 10 hours, figure out what weapon(s) you like, hitting the internet for tutorials and videos as you come across things you don't understand. Once you start carving up monsters and building that set of armor or weapon you had your eye on you'll understand perfectly what we are all talking about!

Re: Poll: The Wii U GamePad - Where Do You Stand on Nintendo's Hefty Controller?

jjx1000

I'm kind of puzzled...what did people expect the controller to do? The DS was a terrific piece of hardware and Nintendo basically built a home console version of a DS. For some reason having a touch screen on a handheld works well but having a touch screen on your controller for a home console is bad?

The biggest issues with the WiiU for me were the name, price, and lack of support. The gamepad is way down the list.

Re: Guide: Getting Started With My Nintendo

jjx1000

For the amount of information Nintendo already knows about me based on Miiverse and my eshop purchases you would think that info would be integrated into the new rewards system. Hopefully the next update will take into account my previous digital downloads.

Also, Miitomo integration with Instagram or Snapchat probably would've made more sense than Facebook & Twitter to me since Miifoto would seem to be a big component of Miitomo, and that younger people tend to use these apps more.

Re: Konami and Capcom Are Bringing Some SNES Classics to New 3DS

jjx1000

@PlywoodStick Wishful thinking I guess. We'll just have to wait until Nintendo comes out with new "New" My Nintendo account system in like 5 years to be able to buy a game once and play it across all platforms. Of course they probably won't make it retro active so they'll make us all buy the games another time.

Re: Take More Risks With Your eShop Purchases, Pleads Nintendo's Damon Baker

jjx1000

All of the time I have available for gaming is allocated between Monster Hunter 4 and Smash Bros. If a game isn't considered a must play and/or it's not made by Nintendo I usually won't bother since it is usually taking time away from a better game I could be playing. Also I can't play another 2D platformer, if you've played one you've played them all.

Re: Editorial: Cheer Up, There Are Some Exciting Games on the Way

jjx1000

I think my takeaway from all of the Nintendo angst that I've read is they just aren't catering to their customers needs enough.

I'll always appreciate that they want to innovate and create something fun before they pour resources into developing a new game since it's very costly and spin-offs are important as well, but my pizza place still sells cheese pizza, and my ice cream place still sells vanilla ice cream. Sometimes people want the same from there gaming as well. If people want Metroid give em Metroid, if they want Animal Crossing/Zelda/Mario you need to keep these things on the menu.

Everyone bought a new console clamoring for staple franchise games and we are still missing too many.

Re: Editorial: Cheer Up, There Are Some Exciting Games on the Way

jjx1000

Save the pragmatic glass half full commentary. People are upset, let them be upset. It's ok for people to be upset and disappointed.

Overall, E3 was pretty boring this year for all companies. Didn't hear anything buzz worthy from Sony...did they have a press conference? Microsoft's big news was how they turned the XBox One into a 360. And Nintendo announced a bunch of games they had already announced and a couple of spin-offs no one seems geared up about.

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

jjx1000

@Windy I agree with you. This has been mentioned before by many people. I think the next Nintendo console should really be a handheld that has an HDMI adapter similar to Chromecast or Amazon TV. No need for two consoles going forward if you can make one that can serve as a home console and portable.

Nintendo has been spreading themselves too thin with development and they could release more games much faster only having to program for one console.

Re: Hands On: We Check Out The New Nintendo 3DS XL

jjx1000

@sinalefa I have the original 2GB 3DS and that's exactly what I did, went out and bought a 32GB SD card. Unfortunately that is what I'll have to do again if I want to upgrade.

I like the smaller version 3DS so I will keep my fingers crossed that it will eventually get a North American release.

Re: Hands On: We Check Out The New Nintendo 3DS XL

jjx1000

@sinalefa You're correct, I thought the Wii U was using an SD Card for storage but it is internal.

Either way my point was more about the lack of storage the portable has compared to the home console. You'd think the 3DS would have more storage to make the portability easier. 16GB to start would be great but I don't think 8GB is asking too much. 4GB is barely enough for two decent sized games.

Re: Hands On: We Check Out The New Nintendo 3DS XL

jjx1000

So the Wii U comes with a 32 GB SD card and the 3DS still only comes with a 4GB SD card? Is the consumer more likely to download games on a stationary console or a portable one?

This maybe a minor gripe to most people but this is my biggest issue since I like my portable to be portable and I don't like swapping out games or carrying games around. Now I will need to upgrade the SD card again if I want to transfer from my original 3DS.

Re: Talking Point: Important Steps to Bring the 3DS and Wii U Closer Together

jjx1000

Nintendo should've kept the WiiU VC exclusive to past home consoles and kept the 3DS VC exclusive to past handheld consoles...OR release all the games for both consoles at the exact same time. Right now it's anyone's guess what is coming out on what console.

...and who do I need to speak with about getting a Metroid game (other than the original) on the 3DS VC?! How about an old Fire Emblem too?!

Re: Talking Point: The Wii U's 'Relevance' Is About Sales, Nintendo's Strategy Has Remained Consistent

jjx1000

@jmax You're right, by anomaly I don't mean to imply that Nintendo was lucky, they read the landscape put out a console that had widespread appeal and it sold ridiculously well...heck...my 70 year old parents even bought one. I guess by anomaly I mean not traditional. So my point is if you look at the sales and exclude the Wii, the sales trend for Wii U is line with what previous traditional Nintendo home consoles have done...a 30% decrease in users from the previous console.

Re: Talking Point: The Wii U's 'Relevance' Is About Sales, Nintendo's Strategy Has Remained Consistent

jjx1000

The Wii was a sales anomaly. Nintendo had been losing approximately 30% of its traditional gaming customers with each new home console release and the Wii U is right inline with this trend when comparing it to the Gamecube. Wii U will probably end up selling 10-15 million consoles in it's lifetime.

Also the underpowered argument irks me. If the game looks great in HD and the gameplay is terrific why does it matter what's going on inside the actual box. I can understand a developer caring but some gamers get too hung up on horsepower.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Wii U Struggles Bring a Challenge, Not Doom

jjx1000

I own a Wii U and love it, from a gaming stand point it's terrific...but from a business stand point the console has to be considered a failure. Gamer loyalty is admirable but if you refuse to come to terms with this after Nintendo all but admitted it today than you really do have your head buried in the sand.

Drastic times! When Mario Kart 8 launches slash the price to $199 and take the hit, and create another Ambassador program for early adopters (eShop credit, free games...etc.) and hope for the best! Otherwise we might be getting introduced to a new console very soon.

Re: Talking Point: Claims of Wii U Third-Party Development Troubles Shouldn't Be Dismissed Lightly

jjx1000

@StarDust Out of the countless Nintendo doom and gloom articles I've been reading over the last few months and the 300+ comments on this article you had a good take!

Usually I see the same old rhetoric and tired arguments about Nintendo and third party support. I think people are ignoring game style preference. They could be giving COD away for free and I still wouldn't play it because I don't like that style of game. Again, i believe the 14-40 crowd who play Xbox and PS are just different than the 14-40 crowd that play Nintendo games. You may own one of each console but you still have go to console...mine is my 3DS.

Re: Talking Point: Claims of Wii U Third-Party Development Troubles Shouldn't Be Dismissed Lightly

jjx1000

@StarDust Totally agree with you. I think the Nintendo consumer is just a different type of gamer than a person who buys Sony & Microsoft consoles. Certainly not everyone, but most people, which is why third parties struggle even with a huge install base like Wii.

Having said that, I'm really loving Phoenix Wright and Monster Hunter on my 3DS but if you only buy a Nintendo console for first and second party games you will never go wrong...Super Mario 3D World puts on a clinic in game design. Too bad so many people are going to miss out on it.

Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd January (North America)

jjx1000

I'm glad I pre-ordered Bravely Default. Based on the poll and comments it sounds like there's a lot of interest in this game. Hopefully Nintendo produced enough...don't want another shortage at launch like they had with Fire Emblem.
