I still chuckle at there being a high-adrenaline rollercoaster at Alton Towers called "Rita". Same goes for this. I just picture all the Power Rangers trying to take down the friendly old shopkeeper from Coronation Street.
@Kilroy I noticed this too, mostly as it is quite unusual. In my experience, if a game is say $20 for the US release, it just gets converted straight to £20 ($24.50 as of today.) It always does my head in.
It's not really my kind of game, but I might get this if not only to both give it a try, and do my bit to encourage these kind of ports being made. I love the fact that so much effort goes into bringing these games to an audience that, by the most part, didn't even get to play them first time around; so i appreciate the risk of releasing it without the safety net of nostalgia.
I remember the graphics blowing my mind back when it was released. I think it was more the scope of it, and how open and expansive it was in retrospect. I might dive back in soon...
At this point, it is basically an insult. Nothing more, nothing less. Not to mention taking it off their website as well, but still expecting people to fork out full price. They must be laughing their heads off.
In my style of tennis, I'm a sucker for taking it to the net, so this sounds like it would drive me up the wall. Shame really, a decent Tennis sim would me more than welcome at the minute.
Wow, this was a scathing review! Deservedly so; it has my backing all the way. I don't think I've seen steps taken in the gaming world that are so patronising and demeaning to consumers. There is actually no other explanation for releasing this game other than the one that is so glaringly obvious: that Switch owners are being taken for mugs.
I also implore people to boycott this. Hopefully they may get the message by the time Fifa 28 comes out.
I have to say, me and my little boy have loads of games on the switch, from Mario Odyssey right through to Animal Crossing, and this game is the most I have seen my son laugh at anything ever. i disagree that it is unplayable, as we've spent the last week playing it, completing loads of the missions, and laughing our heads off at the protagonist falling out of helicopters, completely stacking it as he tries to get on a ferris wheel, and even simply loading a gas bottle onto a forklift. The game's physics, once the (admittedly tricky) controls are mastered, are bloody brilliant.
Also, the vehicles don't all have a single control stick. The forklift has another to operate the forks, one of the boats has a door which operates via a second stick to stop the cargo falling off, the helicopters, both rockets, and planes also have speed and altitude sticks. But that's by the by if you don't like the game anyway.
The wrong button prompts are ridiculous, but are easily ignored. It would be nice if they were taken out in an update though.
We'll continue to keep laughing away at it. It's been worth the price just to see his face when playing it (and we've gone nowhere near any DLC).
I was thinking that it wasn't TOO bad until I saw one of the cars go over a boost, and it just barely registered any difference in speed, then it shot a projectile which is probably one of the worst graphical things I've seen in a game. It looked like someone was dragging a picture of a pie away from the car with their mouse in MS Paint.
This whole game looks like someone starting to get used to Flash. Shame, because I have no qualm with getting this type of game for my little one. I'll avoid this though.
@Dragonslacker1 Mate, sounds like me and you could've been good friends back in the day! Haha. That sounds just like what I was doing back then. I too want to stick this on and blast out some seattle grunge to take me RIGHT back.
I'm going to betray my ignorance and admit that I have no idea who any of these actors are. In fact, this is the first time I've heard any of their names mentioned. I'm certainly intrigued by the game, and how far the humour goes. A brave step in the current climate.
@Leuke Because of your avatar, for a split second I had an image of you being only a couple of feet tall and fitting through it, and i thought "well that's still not that big."
I'm not that far off being 40 years old, and I would not play this without all the lights on (unless it's already daytime anyway), and with Disney songs playing loud in the background. I can handle any film you could throw at me, but for some reason, horror games really get under my skin.
I've wanted to play this since it was in development, as the Twin Peaks comparisons were pouring in from the very beginning, and that's my style for sure. Now I have no excuses whatsoever.
This is genuinely one of the most charmingly beautiful games I've seen so far on Switch. Pushing 20 quid is a perhaps a bit steep, but I'm certainly tempted whilst it's on offer.
I find it rather interesting how my desire to play a game correlates nicely with how close the score gets to either end of the spectrum. Having watched just a few minutes of gameplay, it can only be compared to watching somebody playing a heavily modded Virtua Fighter, through old-school CCTV footage. Awful beyond comprehension. And because of that, I quite simply need to have a go immediately.
Usually if I see a game described as even remotely Lynchian, I dive on it. However, in this case something is pulling me back. It's probably a combination of those visuals, and the fact that my little one won't let go of my switch since Mario Bros Deluxe dropped!
@Ryu_Niiyama No worries. I have no idea where it came from to be honest, and as far as I can remember it hasn't always been there, as it never really bothered me when I was younger. Even films/documentaries that have large open water in them set me off. It's very odd. It's more to do with large bodies of open water, especially if it's dark and vision is limited. I was playing around on my brother's Oculus, and there was a demo which changed to an underwater scene, and I just about lost all bowel control. Funnily enough though, VR is what may end up "curing" it for me, if I pluck up the courage to use it.
@RupeeClock Ridiculous isn't it? I remember playing Shadow of the Colossus, and absolutely loving it, then that one boss came where it was a long eel type thing underwater, and I just couldn't carry on playing. It's so pathetic, but I can't help it! Haha. I'm in my 30's too for god's sake.
As somebody with real bad Thalassophobia (even Ecco the Dolphin makes my heart rate speed up!), I'm in two minds about it. I love relaxing games like this, and I know my kid will love it, but just those screenshots alone are making me question whether or not to pay fifteen quid (£13 today, apparently) for something I'm not going to enjoy one bit!
I still have my OUYA hooked up in my bedroom. I have all the emulators on it, and a certain streaming software, and it's perfect for both. I can see why it bombed, but I've still got a soft spot for it. I'm amazed to see new things being developed for it on the store too.
I too bought into the hype of this game upon release, and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed it, I don't quite understand its almost cult-like status. I think it struck a chord with a generation because of its excellent handling of an LGBT protagonist, but other than that it's just a short and simple game with a rather charming and touching tale to tell.
On the odd occasion, I will admit to being a sucker for style over substance. But on this one, it looks like both have been nailed, and it's rare that a game can give me goosebumps just by watching a gameplay video of it. It really does look beautiful, and a lot of love and care has evidently been poured into it. I can see myself getting this at the weekend.
@Bizzyb I appreciate the reply, thank you! I most certainly will. To be honest, I've enjoyed other games with far worse reviews than this; and yeah, even if it isn't that great, it will still be fun for the little one.
Damn, I've been waiting for this for a while. Need something I can play with the family and this looked ideal from the trailers. Ah well, Mario Party... I await thee...
The ridiculous problem I have with reviews like this, is that I'm equally as tempted to get them as I am the games that score a 9 or 10, just to experience how awful they actually are.
This reminds me heavily of Year Walk, which blew my mind at the time. I love the mythology behind this, and the artwork looks gorgeous. Pretty sure I'll be grabbing this soon.
I've been engrossed in the demo for days now. It is simply the best RPG I have played in a long time, and I can't even say exactly why; but it looks gorgeous, sounds fantastic, and I just feel completely swept away by the story/stories almost immediately, something that hasn't really happened since Illusion of Gaia and FFVII. For me, anyway.
@dumedum I know exactly what you mean, and I agree to a certain extent, but when it's used at least I know exactly what kind of game I'd be getting my hands on. People use "adventure game" to describe Zelda et al, after all.
Likewise, I hadn't seen this anywhere at all before your review, but I have to say it looks very intriguing. I haven't sat with a proper point'n'click adventure since the original Broken Sword came out, so I'm tempted by this. I'm sure I've missed some other great ones in the interim too, so any recommendations are welcome (although i'd hate to hijack the comments.)
Never mind the grass, I wouldn't want to fall on Dolly Parton's chest at the speed them damn things get up to. Shame about the multiplayer shortcomings, as that could've been its one saving grace. Ah well. Maybe one to consider if it ever drops down in price.
I remember buying this from Toys'R'Us as a kid, taking it home for my Amstrad CPC 464, and the tape that was inside was completely blank. They wouldn't refund/replace it either. I had to wait until next month's pocket money to buy it again. I have fond memories of it, I might download it again just for the nostalgia!
