Re: Rumour: Switch 2's Codename Believed To Be In Latest Pokémon Data Leak

@UltimateOtaku91 People these days just regurgitate what they've heard someone else say rather than do research for themselves. The codename for the Switch successor was leaked earlier this year as "Oz."

Now, when people see that they initially refer to the measurement associated with those two letters together which is "Ounce."

Traditionally without fail, Nintendo always does one of two things for the code name of their next-gen console.

1. It refers to the names of the chips used in the device.

or...

2. The form-factor, functionality, or purpose of the device.

Now, in some way "Ounce" could do one of those things. I just don't logically see how. I do however see this.

The code name isn't "Ounce." The code name is "OZ" as in 'The Wizard of Oz.'

What was 'The Wizard of Oz' most known for? Using his genius intellect and technology to make himself look bigger and more impressive than he actually was.

What have we heard so far about the Switch 2? That the raw horsepower is modest compared to the current-gen, but with DLSS upscaling and Ray-Tracing the games may give the APPEARANCE of being close to, if not on-par with the current-gen consoles.

To me that makes the most sense. It could also be why they are waiting so long. If the Switch 2 can actually do that, then they know that there is no hurry because nothing released in the near future will be able to produce visuals and performance substantially better than even what the PS5 Pro can do.

@Wordbonder Nintendo has been tone-deaf for 30 years. Hasn't stopped them. Sometimes they hit. Sometimes they miss. That's the ebb and flow with Nintendo.

This thing has already sold out in Japan. It seems like logical and good sense get twisted out of reality when it comes to Nintendo. They seemingly can bend it to their will.

Re: Forget The Console Wars, Miyamoto Says Nintendo Has Always Followed Its Own Path

The whole purpose of this asinine commentary by Miyamoto was to take a backhanded shot at Sony because of the whole debacle of the PS5 Pro. It really shouldn't even be looked into further than that.

SNES, N64, and GameCube were all bleeding-edge technologies. Especially the N64 which was leaps and bounds more powerful than the competition.

What he is NOT telling you is that the Nintendo Revolution (Wii) was SUPPOSED to "compete" with the PS3 and 360 in power, but Iwata wanted a console that was cheap and small enough to fit on any coffee table. The form factor would not allow for the console to be powerful, so they opted to go with just a small bump over the GameCube in power and motion-controls. It could easily have had both and still be affordable, but Iwata's misguided vision of what a console needed to "look like" was at the heart of that foolish decision. Once people got tired of the motion controls, the Wii died.

No one is trying to "drag" Nintendo into any console war.

First of all, there is no such thing anymore. Sony soundly defeated Microsoft.

End of that story. No one with a synapse firing in their brains were including Nintendo in any of that.

What people ARE trying to do is "drag" Nintendo out of this antiquated thought process (that was born out of the Wii situation) that power must be sacrificed for innovation. Games Like Ratchet and Clank as well as Astro Bot is proof that bleeding-edge performance and innovation done RIGHT fit each other like a hand into a custom-made glove. Another game the exhibits this ironically is Palworld............

.............yeah.

Nintendo has been hit or miss in the gimmick department and even gimmicks that are a hit still have a shelf-life as was shown with the Wii. Hybrid-devices are not Blue Ocean anymore.

It's normal. Everyone is making them now, and they are better in every reasonable way.

Casuals did not buy the Switch because of 1st-party titles. Nintendo fans bought the Switch for 1st-party titles and I regret to inform you that the casuals astoundingly outnumber the core gaming audience. That's how you get to 143 million. They also usually follow up a successful console with a clunker.

If the Switch 2 is weak sauce, Nintendo is in BIG TROUBLE.

They waited until PocketPair had enough money to sue FOR, before doing it. Had they of sued right away, whatever money they got wouldn't have been very much. Now, because Palworld has generated a lot of profit, they can sue to get some of that money and force PocketPair to pay licensing fees going forward figuring that if Palworld was this lucrative for them, they wouldn't just walk away from it and would be willing to pay Nintendo licensing fees to keep it going.

I'm sure Nintendo planned to hold onto to this even longer, but because of the leaked images of the Switch 2 prototype most likely having some elements of truth despite not being the final design, they needed to change the narrative in a hurry.

Pride goes before the fall, and Nintendo has been a very prideful, arrogant, and greedy company as of late. Apparently the success of the Switch erased whatever humility they might have had from the failure of the Wii U. Now, they think it's sweet and they can bully people around, and drag their feet on the Switch 2 without giving any useful information. I mean seriously. If what the leaks say are true, there is nothing that we don't already know or supposed would be the case worth all this secrecy and subterfuge. Everyone expected a more powerful Switch capable in some form or fashion to run games at 4K60. Apparently, that is what it is. Just announced that damned thing already.

Nintendo, it's time for you to s***, or get off the pot. Seriously.

@nessisonett Those 1st-party games were mostly all genre-defining bangers though. That was enough to keep it relevant with the lack of (Japanese) 3rd-party support.

It's kind of a misnomer that ALL 3rd-party studios bailed on the N64. That's not true. They still had adequate support from major Western developers like EA, Activision, Acclaim, Hudson Soft, Midway, THQ, and Ubisoft.

Even Konami (a Japanese studio) was deep on the N64.

Re: Nintendo's Share Price Tanks Amid Fears Of A US Recession

d2k

We've BEEN in a recession for more than 5 years now. They won't just SAY so because it's about CONTROL. There is no benefit to just come right out and say it because once the shock period passes, people adapt and move on business as usual. They don't want that. They want you to be afraid and STAY afraid because that is where the money is. They have weaponized "fear" as a means on control.

People who are afraid,
People who are angry,
People who are confused,
and,
People who are divided are easier to CONTROL.

This is why that's all you see and hear in the media.

"Ooh. The US is heading for a recession! Tensions are mounting in the Middle east. BoOgie-BoOgie-BoOgie!! Goona GET cha!!"

Gimme a break....

Just trust God, and don't worry about things not in your control.

Re: Nintendo President Says Longer Game Development Cycles Are "Unavoidable"

d2k

This comment is being mentioned quite often by Nintendo brass. Nintendo 1st-party titles having long development cycles is pretty much par for the course. It's not something that needs to be reiterated. It's normal.

To me it sounds like they are saying development cycles would be even LONGER than they usually are and that can be due to several factors. The fact that they mention that game development difficulty will increase as "hardware" advances I feel is an intriguing statement. Based on the "probable" specs of the next Nintendo console, I don't see what the issue would be.

A device only as powerful as the PS4 (which came out 11 years ago,) should be pretty easy to work with. One of the reasons 3rd-party support was so plentiful on the Switch its because despite is lack of power, it was very easy to develop for and studios that bothered to do so were able to get all the juice out of it they could. Giving it more power with the same basic architecture shouldn't "slow things down." It should speed things up if anything.

To me, these comments suggest that whatever is in the next Nintendo device is newer tech that they have never used before or aren't accustomed to using whether that be DLSS, or even some hardware that is close to on-par with the competition because all we hear from 1st and 3rd party studios is the difficulty and COST of development for games for the PS5 and XSX.

Food for thought.

Re: 'Yars Rising' Hacks Its Way Onto Switch This September

d2k

As a huge fan of the original game on the Atari 2600, I'm not sure about this. I hope that they aren't just using the IP to sell an idea for a game that otherwise would be overlooked if it was just an original concept.

Hopefully, there will be an explanation as to why you go from mutated houseflies fighting evil aliens to an anime-girl doing Metroidvania stuff.

Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Confirmed For Switch, Launching 2025

d2k

@Hyrulewarrior This game has been in development at Retro Studios since 2019. This game was FAR into development long before any specs for Nintendo's next-gen were even finalized.

Even if you try to target an area where you "think" the next console would be, you also have to think about the Switch version, so couldn't really do that either without is being a royal pain trying to squeeze a next-gen game into the Switch.

Also, the Switch has 141 million units sold and counting. It makes no sense to skip that audience and move the game to the next console where the install base is ZERO. Game development is not cheap.

Lastly, Metroid has never been a title that moved consoles. As iconic as the franchise is for some people, not everyone is into Metroid. This game obviously will be cross-gen and IF the rumors are true regarding Nintendo's next console, this game will be able to take advantage of the increased processing-power, increased GPU power, increased RAM, and DLSS. What they showed yesterday on a system that is for all intents and purposes and overclocked Wii U with and extra CPU core and ore RAM, even if it is just as power as the PS4 when docked, I have no doubt the game will look amazing.

Re: Talking Point: Is Summer Game Fest Really Missing Nintendo's Presence?

d2k

The Summer Games Festival was missing AAA games. That was the problem. It just felt like an extended indie showcase, which is good and is necessary, but that does not fill the void the E3 left behind.

In order for the Summer Game Festival to work IMO, you are gonna need major announcements for major games from major studios. ALL of them.

What Geoff Keighly needs to do, is to go to every major 3rd party, as well as go to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, and make a deal where he can announce just ONE GAME from each of them that is a surprise. It doesn't have to be a AAA 1st-party title, but it can be if they want it to be. Just one title from each major console company, one title from each major 3rd party studio, and all the indie stuff, then I think the Summer Game Festival can cook, and everyone can still do their own events with plenty of surprises.

Re: Nintendo Acknowledges That Successor Announcement May "Impact" Switch Sales

d2k

The PS2 mark is fruit that is hanging far too low for Nintendo not to try and grab it. All of us in that position would try for it.

After the beating that Nintendo took with the Wii U from fans and media, you don't think they don't want to make history by going from the worst-performing home console of their history (yes, I know that the Color TV Game only sold 3 million, but that was when that games industry was in it's embryonic-state and it did win the 1st console generation after all,) then follow that up with not only their best-selling home console of all time, the best-selling Nintendo console period, and the best-selling video game console PERIODT???

They need 14-15 million consoles more to break the record and even though the* Switch* will still be in production, it's gonna be hard to move units after the new console comes out even with a massive price-drop. Especially if there is full backwards compatibility like the rumors claim. I mean, why buy a regular Switch at that point?

Re: Rumour: Switch Successor's Codename May Have Been Uncovered

d2k

It's real easy when you look at history. Nintendo ALWAYS ties the gimmick of the console into the name. If the previous console was a success, they always keep part of that name or the whole name, and then tack-on a surname that describes the gimmick. If it is just a more powerful Switch and nothing else, and Nintendo plans to stick with the hybrid form-factor from now on, then it will probably Switch 2 or Super Switch.

If there is some new gimmick "attached" (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) to the device, you will See Switch, but whatever that gimmick is or does, that will follow Switch.

Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Said To Be Fully Backward Compatible With A Larger, 1080p Screen

d2k

@Dazman Well, Nintendo has had an up/down cycle with home consoles going all the way back to the GameCube. That console only sold 24 million, but the Wii sold 101 million. The Wii U sold 13 million, but the Switch has sold 140 million and counting. So, based on history, Nintendo is due for another clunker. Considering that even in the best-case scenario the Switch 2 will barely be on-par with the base Steam Deck making it far less powerful than the other hybrids already on the market, then you add in those companies already working on more powerful follow ups to those, the Switch 2 might just wind up being the Switch Pro and Nintendo is going to have to do something else.

Re: 'Switch 2' Will Be An Iterative Evolution And Will Cost $400, Predicts Analyst

d2k

So much contradiction and misinformation in this. If Nintendo's new console was just a minimal-upgrade over the current model, there would be no reason for the secrecy and subterfuge (Nintendo President claiming that their new hardware was not shown off at Gamescom when it was reported by major reputable, journalistic outfits that it was.)

We would have seen it already. Nintendo isn't talking, so people are just making up their own stories at this point.

The only thing in this that I will agree with is the $400 price-tag. That I can see. I don't expect the new console to be on-par with the PS5 or XSX, or even the higher-end hybrid systems, but it's pretty dilapidated to claim that it will only be somewhat more powerful when the Tegra X1 is a 9-year old chip.

nVidia has more powerful alternatives that they can use that would still give it at WORST PS4-level power, which is substantially-better than the current Switch and it wouldn't even be expensive to do that. They could easily make a PS4-level Switch for $350 and sell it at a profit. When you think about games like Uncharted 4, Ratchet and Clank, God Of War 4, and Spider-Man all running on 11 year-old hardware, and you add in the mastery that Nintendo is able to do from a development-standpoint regardless on the power-level of their system, PS4-level power may be all that they need, even though we all want more.
