@Lofoten I think the dual release was only because of the low install base of both GC and WiiU so they were low risk in affecting early adoption… certainly not the case here and I think you’re right the switch 2 will need exclusives to draw the current switch owners to upgrade.
@Not_Soos on the switch pad fit (aka “slim”) I own a pair of the white/yellow ones and while it’s not a scheme it particularly found of I really rate them for comfort vs portability but no motion or wireless at all - ie have to be attached to switch at all times. There’s a gengar and pikachu/mimikyu special edition of these controllers too IIRC.
EDIT: also owned the switch pad pro and felt similarly to you just never felt comfortable and found the slim much better
Didn’t need more Kirby or fire emblem personally…. N64 is good but always just a fun half hour with each title before you realise games have moved on for a reason. Not enough Zelda footage and the May release date is disappointingly further away than I’d thought. I was expecting GameCube remakes (ie wind waker and Metroid prime) or Metroid Prime 4 news but more fool me. I’m enjoying splatoon 3 and will enjoy Pokémon and Mario rabbids when it releases so maybe I’m spoilt at this point.
I’ve just secured a PS5 (and upgraded to an internal 1TB SSD) - after avoiding scalpers and overpriced bundles - and preordered an OLED at launch to replace my launch OG. I also have a lite. In reality in a years time I’d probably just hammer OT at the hospital again to justify a switch 1.5 but I do think it’s a hard sell right now in the UK and would have to blow me away with features at a decent price point (which lets be honest won’t happen).
I think compare it to the Wii and celebrate its success absolutely but remember the crazy sales for the Wii were against the backdrop of even crazier sales for the DS. The switch is one unit and definitely doing much better than the 3DS/WiiU era but doesn’t compare to Wii/DS era (probably nothing ever will). I’m happy though I love my switch and love seeing Nintendo grab headlines this way with the positive news for a brave (if overdue) move like Legends Arceus also.
@RCGamer I am currently in an argument with their "customer service" about the delivery of this very item from their website. The tracking site is in chinese, didn't inform me of which courier was delivering the parcel within UK once it got airmailed over from China and didn't let me know about a missed delivery (partly the fault of - one assumes - royal mail who didn't leave a calling card) which has now overrun its holding time at the local mail centre!!! Now demanding I pay a resending fee as its been returned to Hayes PD (where?!)... buy with caution folks!!
@communistwinnie yes this will give you missile mouth opportunities more often. Less defensive more attacking. Just don’t try and jump the four claw attack you MUST morph ball or crouch that
PSA for phase 2 (which when I discovered it allowed me to win first try after probably ten deaths and ready to give up!!):
Jump above and use the fists in the wall one by one as a staircase to the grapple pad and feed Kraid with missiles til a counter opening (Kraid swipes at you after covering his face) allows you to fire into his mouth during a cutscene.
This will GREATLY improve your chances and I’d say jumping up the fists is ESSENTIAL to avoid being ground down by bouncing bombs and poison floors.
GBA HP and philosophers stone definitely a deep cut I can go along with... might need to get my parents to dig it out for me for the garden visit. Happy memories of sneaking about hog warts.
@BarefootBowser yeah the price hikes for dollar parity on all Apple products in September 2017 was eye watering. I do think the lite will be more popular in the US where you can clearly market the $100 difference in price, I think that’s why we’ve seen links awakening bundled in here already.
I think the continued weak pound in recent months has lead to the price parity with the US where the $299:£279 OG model looks a much better deal (the lite should probably have been £169/179 if the pound was stronger). Might have been a factor?
If it’s £180 and defo has a gyro sensor with an easy way of continuing play between lite and core systems... I’ll find it hard to resist this unnecessary purchase
I'm interested in both these titles and noticed they were out of stock on Amazon for a period and are still unavailable for immediate prime dispatch. Might have something to do with if there's a widespread stock issue.
Mostly can’t wait to play as an octoling online tbh haha. After grinding out the Octo Canyon campaign this is a welcome bumper expansion a year after release. If there’s multiple weapon runs like OC I hope they’re balanced better per weapon (looking at you, Octo Shower).
Using the Splatoon 1 E3 2014(?) reveal was really clever... totally thought it was a 3ds single player platformer or something. Must have faith in the franchise to lead a smash reveal with it.
I think my home country is inherently more cynical than the rest of the world. Comic book stores aren’t a thing here for example. People don’t like to admit childishness. Most youth and adult males seek “realism” and “grit” from their teens and upwards and won’t admit enjoying cartoons etc. I owned a GameCube as a mid teen and was in a VERY small minority at school. I kept that fact very quiet especially still playing Pokemon in the new millennium (red/blue were huge but after that I was “too old” for such things). The Wii was an exception until later in its life when I think Nintendo opinion reset with its stagnation. WiiU was nowhere to be seen here (except my house).
The Nintendo UK online store has been a revelation here because it’s very hard to source Nintendo gear in stores. GAME is the only dedicated gaming retailer, gives about 1/4 space of Xbox or PS4 sharing it with 3DS, and HMV has majorly stepped away from gaming. So it’s amazon, supermarkets or toy stores. Harry Potter being an exception to all this.
However, Disney and HP are huge here so the Toy Story “for kids... but adults too” vibe of odyssey and BoTW should be advertised heavily. Nostalgic ads like the Pokemon super bowl ad would help too.
Gameplay>all else. I’d argue the reason the 3DS had early struggles and the WiiU failed were their central gimmicks didn’t add enough to the gameplay experience. Similarly, there isn’t YET a strong enough case for 4K or VR adding enough to the gameplay experience VS cost to consumer. Touch screen input and motion were built cheaply into the DS and Wii hardware and so captured the imagination of the public. Same with the Switch concept.
I know Nintendo is desperately clinging onto parent friendly policies with their games but I really think some form of "friends only" chat could have been worked into the pro controller, switch itself and/or grip charger. I can understand the difficulty of Bluetooth and wireless headsets but even wired options aren't been offered in 2017. if you decided to connect your controller to the dock via USB would there not have been the option for a BT headset then? Does anyone know if the communication with the phone app will steal bandwidth away from your internet connection vs a built in console option?
As a shift worker this is incredibly disappointing as even catching the likes of directs is an issue for me and was looking forward to this mode as a stand out from the first game. Also only switch player I know likely to invest in this game lives in NI while I'm in Scotland so local not really an option. Also assuming split screen with my partner is not an option?
After having my special edition SSB + adapter order cancelled by Amazon, I gave in and bought the solus edition and a PDP Fightpad (plugs into wiimotes) - I'd recommend sticking with the Wii U Pro Controller if like me you can't get an adapter because I've found it's actually an excellent option.
