Re: Nintendo's Lawyers Strike Again, This Time Against A Mario NFT Gambling Game

@TheAwesomeBowser Close. They're glorified links to jpegs (and other things) that use a tremendous amount of energy (i.e. carbon release) to make, and serve no real purpose. They don't confirm ownership and they don't seem to confer any rights.

The only people I've seen excited about them are speculative investors spending money on NFTs of really bad cartoons. It's very very strange. At least buying tulip bulbs got you some nice tulips.

@BloodNinja All due respect (and I'm answering out of respect, the same reason I haven't answered another comment by another user), I have thought it through. But we're entitled to different opinions. Mine is that youtube is aimed at a very specific niche of Nintendo consumers, and as someone posted below, the backlash against Pokemon, seemed to have little effect on the bottom line.

What is likely to happen it seems to me, is that they will add more content, and some people will say this is caving to customer discontent and some will say it was always part of their weird plan (don't get me wrong, Nintendo has weird plans...).

On the degrees thread, I didn't actually get the Politics degree (credit crunch, needed money, etc...) but my point is I have studied statistics and I can assure you this is not a scientifically valid sample.

@BloodNinja The form of feedback they will care about is whether they made more or less money than they expected.

If by this time next year they've added two more consoles maybe a couple more games for free, I think they'll have got a fair number on board. Youtube approval is about as real as metacritic review bombing though.

What we can agree on is that at least a moderate number of people were annoyed. Whether that matters or not is another question. If Nintendo were bothered by anything on the internet it would probably be the specific critiques of the service which they can either fix if valid or dismiss if not.

@WhiteUmbrella Stats 101 is that correlation does not equal causation (i.e. it's likely that a game that gets a poor reception will have a poor youtube response, the other way around does not follow).

I'm not sure what you were trying to say with your reply to me. That a large number of Switch Online users care enough about the service to read about it or post about it on the internet?

I assume most people get the basic tier because they need it to play online, and then look at what the extended tier offers and decide whether that's something they want or not.

Comparing Games As A Service (I'm thinking of Fortnite) with this is comparing Apples and Oranges.

Fortnite offers a great value proposition, in that you can get the whole game experience for free, but they're clearly making a lot on cosmetics, but on the other hand, ACNH has had loads of content added despite only paying once for the product with no requests for more money (unless you include sanrio amiibo cards). The DLC basically seems like a new game. But this was never a Game As A Service, and really if they'd not added anything to the game, you would have got exactly what you paid for (and with basically no bugs!).

@TDCinFL But like people have said it totally misses the point of the portability of the switch. I don’t mind stadia I’ve got one but don’t really use it, but it’s a much better system for cloud gaming. And you can play loads for ‘free’ with a pro subscription. Getting a stadia set up or even an x box series s is pretty cheap. If people want those next gen aaa games that’s a far better way to play them (streaming or not).

@Kieroni But the people guessing were totally clueless. Of course they wouldn't have a $5 add on... In that case they would just raise the price across the board! If you're an ACNH fan, then the addition of the DLC made it good value. Especially for people with family subscriptions (I AM paying an extra £4 per year). But no one has to buy it. No one is penalised for not buying it. They've not raised the price of the base subscription. So it's hard to see what the complaint is.

@johnvboy For a braindead fan, I'm doing all right for myself.

Business lesson everyone: why are Nintendo offering these games for rent rather than purchase? Because every console offers a subscription model it's a guaranteed way to keep income coming in. And they need to offer more value than just the online play features. So this is how they do it. And most people are fine with it. Because it's super cheap!

I'm so excited that eventually we'll get an update about nso where people stop whining about the price, or comparing it to completely different offerings from Microsoft and Sony. Let me say it for the 47th time. Make 7 friends and you only pay about £7/year (yes, that's less than Microsoft costs per month).

In my great generosity, I've even allowed my group members who don't see the value to avoid paying for the upgrade (this year... then they either shape up or get kicked...).

In the wise words of Dakota Fanning, 'Whiners are wieners'.
