Re: 'Zelda' Meets 'Super Mario Maker' In Super Dungeon Maker

Troll_Decimator

@Kiz3000 I don't see how a Zelda dungeon maker would be fun in itself like Mario Maker is. Mario is all about the immediate actions being fun, the jumping, running, all that stuff. Zelda is more linked with the whole extrinsic experience (outside dungeons) adding extra value to the dungeon content. A Zelda maker would have very limited appeal.

@BLD They do have a lot of custom animations for this game that they didn't have before. Obviously they didn't do everything from scratch for this game, that would be impossible to do in the time window they have, but as I mentioned, GameFreak does have different areas of focus compared to Monolith Soft. Different companies focusing on different things, pretty much.

Do people think that Monolith Soft is full of competent developers and GF full of incompetent ones? That's a ludicrous notion. It's possible that their legacy infrastructure slows them down, they were never a big console game company before this game. At the same time, GF is also basically learning how to even put together an open world game for the first time, while also having a much tighter deadline. It really is apples and oranges.

I think what it boils down to is, would I want to wait for another year of two for this game to be slightly more polished? No, I wouldn't. It's really good enough as it is. I don't think its Metacritic score would be 95 with a little more work. For what it is, this is as good as it gets. The next game will rework certain things that maybe didn't work out, and will be even better.

@Yorumi Being 10 year old doesn't somehow make the Switch hardware better though, or GameFreak more experienced than Monolith was 10 years ago. Besides, the Wii U and Switch are not miles apart in power. The Wii U was also outdated when it came out, hardly top of the line hardware. The thing is, though, Pokemon has far, far more different animated assets than Xenoblade X. GameFreak has many riggers, animators etc, for all the different Pokemon, while Monolith is more tech focused. Their experience is also not equivalent. I remember reading that Xenoblade Chronicles (the original) had a tiny amount of artists and no concept artist at all. Different studios, different strengths and weaknesses. And Japan is not exactly overflowing with experienced game programmers, in fact they have a shortage.

@CharlieGirl I completely agree. A company doesn't have to become a thousand strong game development megacorporation just because you want them to. They might prefer to work like this, as a smaller and more flexible team. The hardware on Switch is very limited for 2022 standards. Even if they had double the staff, if you think they could make this look better than BotW, would be completely delusional. Legends Arceus, despite the shortcomings, is still by far the best looking Pokemon game ever. So I don't get what is there to complain about, really. If you don't like it, just don't buy it and move on.

Re: UK Charts: Pokemon Legends: Arceus Still On Top Despite Release Of Dying Light 2

@Slain The Witcher on the Switch looks absolutely dreadful anyways. It's resolution is extremely low and it's blurry as sin. It's a miracle that it even runs and isn't a complete slideshow. I much prefer the crisp 1080p visuals of Pokémon Legends.

It's good for a studio to know what they can get away with on a platform. Even Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has awful framerate and resolution, especially in handheld, and people won't stop praising Monolith as some open world gurus. Guess what? Those better textures mean it goes as low as 540p to hold a steady framerate.

Re: PlatinumGames Is Keen To Create Titles That Are "Different" From Its Past Efforts

Troll_Decimator

Games can't just keep getting bigger and more detailed indefinitely while still costing the same price. That's just common sense. If we want AAA games by Platinum and not the "AA" games they have been making so far, this is only natural that they will have to find new avenues of revenue. Personally I would prefer if they stuck with AA games though, but I don't run the company.

Re: Soapbox: I'm Looking Forward To Going To The Past With Pokémon And Ace Attorney

Troll_Decimator

@Lizuka Agreed, honestly I think both games are far too long for their own good as well, a common theme with Ace Attorney games as of late. Don't get me wrong, I love all of them, but I wish the writers would take a step back and keep things a little more concise. Also didn't care much for Sherlock Holmes and his great deductions if I'm honest, I could do without this feature in the next AA games or at least it needs some rework to make the sections between trials shorter. People that say GAA are the best Ace Attorney games are absolutely outta their minds. The only thing that is truly the best in them is the character models and animation, which truly are fantastic. Not on par with the main series otherwise.
