@Wargoose Look, as I said, I have no problem with the changes, I didn't like them enough to justify it, but that is not the issue with the game. Its level design and pace is the problem. Too much filler content. I have no intention to replay it, it's a crawl. They tried to inflate the runtime too much with pointless detours. It would be much better if it was 10 hours long. The original game was banger after banger, no filler.
I do agree that it's the best FF since PS2 days, but that says more about FF 11-15 more than this game. It isn't bad, but "not bad" is something that should never go next to FF7. The original is a stone cold classic masterpiece.
@lordzand He is actually speaking for a lot of people. The remake was an intense disappointment, and I am not talking about the story or combat changes they made, but from an actual basic game design standpoint. The combat was the only passable element in that regard.
You say it's better than the original, but how can that be true when the content essentially boils down to just constant unnecessary filler with no rhyme or reason to any of it, and the level design consists of constantly running down corridors, or following someone really slowly?
The original had variety and little to no fat. This is 90% fat and 10% substance. It constantly disrespects the players time. I am definitely not going to play it ever again because of that reason. I won't even bother getting into the completely unnecessary story changes, it fails on a basic level as a game before we even have to worry about any story beats.
I'm going to be honest, these games are not worth playing even if they were not cloud based. Probably the most needlessly convoluted plot in the history of the medium. The gameplay is nothing to write home about for today's standards, either. Unlike turn based JRPGs, these don't hold up that well. They had some fun novelty back in the day because of the crossover with Disney, but that's about it.
@Burning_Spear Yup, that's exactly my point. The makers were a very minor part of Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games before Stardew Valley, and they were instant, no waiting time involved. I would have no problem with them if they were instant. The moment they add a timer, it means you need multiple of each. This is a problem in both PoOT and Stardew Valley despite them taking less space in the latter. It's just a ton of extra busywork that was really unnecessary in a game that already has plenty of things to do.
@PanFriedSoup Well, judging by their rerelease spree, they will definitely be releasing those games as well, too. They have a good track record at this point. If we get lucky, some of them might even get a full remake.
@ComplaintKiller Thank you. People simply think they know a lot when they don't understand anything at all. We should be grateful this is even getting ported at all.
Since when does NintendoLife sell Nintendo points? I had no idea. I'll probably pick a couple games up that I'm missing if they go on sale. I'm hoping for Ace Attorney 4+5+6 collection for Switch in the near future. Already played them a couple times on DS/3DS, but they would look amazing with the GAA treatment.
@KateGray "I think going from Stardew to some of the older games will be a bit of a stark difference"
Is it, though? The "maker" nonsense in Stardew (and also PoOT unfortunately) made a game that is already basically busywork into busywork AND waiting. If that was Stardew's contribution to the genre, it can kindly remove itself. All the Harvest Moon games are better than Stardew Valley, as awesome as SV is for a game made by one person.
@PharoneTheGnome How can you not? The pixels on the left are countable.
Anyway, this is the best version of this game we are likely ever going to get, at least in the next decade if not more, so more than happy to play it.
@blindsquarel If it was the only option, even the 'rental' emulation would be worth it. But anyway, this isn't the only game you get by getting NSO+ so that's a bit of a strawman to begin with. You get a whole lot more plus two expensive DLC packs (for the duration, sure, but still).
@blindsquarel Do you really love it if you say it isn't worth $50? For me, it is absolutely a priceless experience, I would even pay $1000 for a hard copy if I had to. I understand if you are broke, obviously other things come first, but if you have money to spare, not all games have equal value. If any given bland, generic and lifeless open world game is worth $60 or $70, Majora's Mask is absolutely worth 10 times that at minimum. It's truly an inspirational experience and a real work of art. The inspiration alone is worth the price of admission and then some. Look at Outer Wilds and The Forgotten City, two amazing games that would have never been made without Majora's Mask.
I own physical copies of all of them already, that's how you actually own these games, not by downloading them on your 3DS or Wii U. If your system develops a failure, you're out of luck. The cartridges are practically indestructible. They are not even very expensive unless you also want a pristine cardboard box.
@SpaceboyScreams These relics that you are referring to are far superior than most games coming out today. Renting Majora's Mask for $50 for a year is a steal compared to buying any generic AAA game for $60 at launch. It is simply an unforgettable experience and not just "content" that is there for you to waste your time on.
@Jokerwolf Except for that to be possible, governments would have to implement a system in which they adopt ownership of a certain ecosystem once the company involved just can't or doesn't want to upkeep it anymore. There are a million reasons why such a thing is not currently available. Legislation and lots of effort would need to go towards that.
However, even with that in place, physical media will always be superior when it comes to ownership and value. There's a reason why digital AAA games with dozens of millions of dollars in budget these days cost like $1-5, or are given away for free even, yet their physical counterparts are more often than not multiple times the price. Physical goods are actually valuable. Data is just data, it has no inherent value, only perceived, and apparently even the perceived is not much, judging by the numbers.
Video game history foundation should probably realize that Nintendo is a business and not a charity service, and that running a digital store that doesn't justify the running cost makes no business sense. Whether we like it or not (we don't, obviously), this was bound to happen one day.
Easily one of the most unique games of all time, and my personal favourite. I have played pretty much all the games it has inspired and not a single one has managed to achieve everything that it did 20 years ago.
@Jokerwolf Obviously, but I still prefer physical. Digital games inherently cheapen the product and make it just vague "content", especially if we are looking at subscription services. Not that buying digital games is much better, though, your entire library could be gone in a snap. I have thousands of digital games, because they were cheap, I have zero attachment to any of them.
Nintendo is shutting these down because at this point they cost more to keep them running than not. Why would they keep supporting them? It simply makes no business sense whatsoever. Just learn your lesson and support physical games.
Can't wait for this terrible console to die for good. The biggest mistake in Nintendo's history. It will be a cool collectable item in the future though.
@romanista I mean, you are getting rewarded for helping them out with development and getting to play the game early, that's good enough right? Or is this the world that we live now that if you can't share a screenshot on Twitter, it's a disaster? C'mon folks.
@RupeeClock I do not recall it either, but I haven't really read the T&C. That said, for those demos, I'm not even sure if they were using them for testing anything other than the network, so posting screenshots doesn't do any harm.
@RupeeClock It's a free play test isn't it? So what do you mean? The game is still under development, and they have very clearly underlined the reason why they are doing this play test: to help them polish up the game (mainly the controls) and catch any bugs their QA didn't find, so prohibiting people from sharing stuff until it's fully wrapped up and ready to be shipped is entirely logical. I don't think Nintendo is delusional enough to think people won't still share it, they are just trying to minimize it.
@CharlieGirl What do you mean? Physical games are cheaper than ever right now. I wouldn't be surprised if they get more expensive in the future to account for inflation and fewer people wanting them.
@NintendoKnight You realize that Sega doesn't go out of their way hiring fan project creators, right? That's a myth that is constantly perpetuated for some reason.
I don't want it to become GamePass. I want to continue buying hard copies of my games without feeling like I'm getting shafted compared to people that are just paying £15 per month and getting everything. As great as GamePass is, it devalues games as an art and turns them into pointless Netflix or Disney style "content". It's different for legacy titles, obviously they won't be in print forever, but I hope they never do this with entire new games.
@Solaine Of course, but the marketing behind XC2 was on a different level than the original XC that we had to beg to get in the west. The Definitive Edition is a rerelease and those don't sell as much. XC3 would be a much better comparison.
@dBackLash It isn't optional for the developers spending time on it, and it holds them back because they can't change the combat mechanics so easily when competitive is included. They wouldn't have introduced the new styles if we had it. Anyways, I have no intention to play multiplayer so the less time spent on it, the better.
@Tobiaku I love XC2 but the designs were probably too much for most people, I'm glad they toned them down so this game has a broader audience. This looks more in line with XC1. More people buying the games = more sales = XC4 will be even higher budget.
