An attempted bank robbery took place in Florida last week, with the suspect wearing a Sonic the Hedgehog mask.
According to the West Volusia Beacon, local law enforcement officers were dispatched to the Florida Credit Union in DeLand on February 2nd after they were informed that an armed robbery was in progress.
The suspect threatened a bank employee with a hammer and demanded money, but eventually gave up and ran away on foot – presumably as fast as Sonic himself, because he's still currently at large, despite DeLand PD, Volusia Sheriff’s Office and Air One participating in a search.
There was no damage to the property and no one was harmed, thankfully.
Florida Credit Union Assistant Vice President of Branch Operations Brian Leatherman later said:
Everybody is safe, nothing was taken, and local police are on it.
Anybody with any information relating to this case is urged to contact the DeLand Police Department.

A Sonic Mask AND using a hammer?! Honestly, if I had been working at that bank, I would’ve laughed right in his face. Whoever this was was clearly super inexperienced.
Looks like our boy has fallen on some hard times
It just had to be Florida man…😬
WHY IS IT ALWAYS A FLORIDA MAN
What's going on in Florida that we don't know about?!
My family actually really loves Florida because of warm weather amusement park rides and food.
Though my sister says that Florida is crazy.
Also the last time we went there it was a bit of a disaster.😅
Florida strikes again
That screams “I just lost my job and I have kids…” a hammer? That’s desperation right there.
Plus don’t most banks have plexiglass walls up for covid and robberies? What was he gonna do? Knock on the plexi?
How can we be so sure it was just some guy with a Sonic MASK?
Damn Sonic really feel off
He was wearing a Sonic mask, yet he was acting like Shadow. Hope everyone involved is ok.
Also, @BloodNinja @StrictlyStyles HOW DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING.
Glad no one was hurt. Sonic is fast
@Shepdawg1 You seem to know quite a lot about bank robbery principles 🤨.
@chapu2006 Shh…
Just a stunt to hype Sonic 2 I bet!
@Fizza lol
inb4 someone starts complaining that today is a slow news day and that this is a Nintendo site, not a Sega site.
This is really Sega's fault for not enforcing their copyright. If he tried with a Mario mask Nintendo would have intervened with a cease and desist letter.
And there it is; the other lyric of the 4Kids theme song.
Obviously someone is trying to frame Sonic and it ain't Shadow this time.
Seems like a typical Sonic fan to me.
Wowsers. Sonic Colors: Ultimate sales must have been really bad for Sonic to fall this low... Sonic Frontiers better be awesome and successful.
Never change Florida…
Never change.
I will never stop saying this, sadly it seems to be true everywere. Police are slow asf. And will take about an hour to arrive anywere unless it's a home invasion.
Roflol that is too funny!
Fanboy trying to drum up interest for Sonic 2?
Lmao would have been funnier if it was a Shadow mask with a gun (glad no one got hurt).
It's weird. I live in Florida, but I haven't seen many of these weird instances. I have heard of a couple though. It's always funny when nobody gets hurt in a crime and you find out they were trying to rob a bank with a hammer.
So this is the true meaning of the lyrics for City Escape.
I bet it was Chris Chan.
GTA6 & Kunckles Confirmed!
"Everybody Super Sonic Robbing, gotta keep your body on the ground"
(I hope everyone involved in the incident is ok /srs)
@StarPoint has to pay the bills for the new game
@Strictlystyles @BloodNinja @Fizza Florida has a law called the Sunshine Law, which states anyone can access public records, which includes arrest records. There are so many Florida Man stories because the news gets access to the crime reports almost as soon as they are filed and available to the public, and the more outlandish ones are ran as news stories. This is different than the news looking into a story they were tipped on, they get the information without having to do much work. That's why we see so many Florida Man/Woman stories.
@Knuckles Do other states have that kind of law in effect? I've always wondered whether we'll see an Ohio Man in the news someday.
I think this person forgot that sonic is not the one with the hammer. If they were a true sonic fan they woulda worn a Amy mask.
@Purgatorium Not to mention someone showing up with a Mario mask and a hammer would at least be in character.
@Shepdawg1 Don't know about laughing at that man is a good idea, you want to have a really sore hand?
@BirdBoy16
Times are hard for the blue blur.
OK I guess.......
busts out laughing
Dr. Eggman reaching new lows, framing Sonic for a bank robbery.
Just gonna leave this here https://imgur.com/a/NKsUrOd
The first thing that comes to mind is that Spider-Man scene with the robbers wearing Avengers masks
To bad he didn't have the power of the Chaos Emeralds to go Super...
@Knuckles I understand that, but why is crime so high in Florida men’s lives?!
Possibly spoilers for the new Sonic movie!? On a serious note, I am super stoked for the new one. I am seeing this one with my kids for sure. My son was too young when the first one came out.
They should stake out the premiere to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He might make an appearance
Also love stupid bank robber stories. One of them inspired the research behind the ‘Dunning-Kruger’ effect. Where dumb people think they know more than they do.
"Tails I'm going to rob a bank do you need anything?"
@BloodNinja
I think there are some peoples have mindset "I'm too cool to be nice people".
@Anti-Matter Dude. Indeed
this is everywhere
I'm Guessing Tails is creating fake identities, Knuckles is guarding the secret opening to their hideout, and Amy is high?
Makes sense for GTA 6 and Knuckles.
