And if the rumors of the next system are worth their salt, we’ll likely just have Smash Ultimate be backwards compatible, since they still make a ton of money on the game normally and all the DLC.
None of the other Smash games have been rereleased on a new console (they didn’t port Smash for Wii U over onto the Switch like Mario Kart 8 did to avoid making Mario Kart 9) so no reason they would do the same for this, especially since people would expect more, like with what Teo_o dreamed of earlier.
@TheMegaMarshtomp What, were you expecting a balance patch?
They did say during the final balance patch update they weren’t doing any more balance patches, why did you think they were going to go back on their word? (It’s like people expecting an new fighters pass after they said they were definitely done with DLC after Sora)
Pretty sure there’s some hidden bug fixes or more spirits added in that will be released periodically throughout the rest of the year.
And they’re likely not going to release a big deluxe version as they still make plenty of money on the normal game. The only Switch games that have had the DLC included were limited runs of Pokemon Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet.
@rushiosan Tears of the Kingdom, Splatoon 3, and Xenoblade 3 got some.
But also try to remember what games had come out recently, do you really think something like Mario Wonder would benefit in having new amiibo?
The fact is, there will always be new amiibo. Every time people say “oh, that’s it, there’s no more amiibo” they’re going to release something that has amiibo functionality built in.
How many times has this been said, actually? I’ve seen this happen every few years…
@teo_o You’re asking too much. Smash isn’t getting rollback netcode due to the very nature of the game’s item spawns (And Sakurai isn’t going to go full competitive player mindset, remember the game’s focus was never fully on competitive.) and the reason trophies were excluded was due to the space on the game.
@larryisaman When Activision asked Nintendo for permission to use characters for their Skylanders Superchargers game in 2015, they wanted Peach, Fox, and Kirby.
Peach wasn't selected because Nintendo thought Peach wouldn't fit and brand accuracy and all that.
Fox wasn't added because Star Fox Zero was their next big game at the time.
Kirby wasn't selected because according to Activision, Nintendo doesn't fully own Kirby, so they couldn't allow him to be added.
Hence why they went with Donkey Kong and Bowser, primarily because Nintendo said they were villains.
It's not a hard article to look up either. So Kirby isn't under Nintendo's direct control for them to do whatever they want.
I don't know what Camelot, the developers of Golden Sun, are doing right at the moment, but I'd argue that if anything it'll be yet another Mario Sports game.
But, back in 2012, the producers asked fans if they want a Golden Sun, ask for it.
Apparently, not enough fans asked for it, or asked the wrong people: those asking for a playable Issac in Smash Bros for instance...
Kind of like how the Chibi-Robo team asked people to buy Zip Lash to ensure the franchise had a future, regardless if it was the type of game people wanted.
@Chibi_Manny Geno's already in the game as a spirit, he's a Legend class and has been in since launch.
Anyway, to kind of round out this string of replies, Sakurai mentioned on his channel discussing the game that Trophies were taken out primarily to save space and to have something more interactive. As trophies (figurines in Japan) took space on the game and didn't add much once collected. Spirits provide a good substitute being equipable and having some gameplay.
And Music in Smash is always a big deal, as they were always added with characters and stages - And yes, I include Mii Fighter costumes in that description. The Japanese fanbase don't view Mii Fighter Costumes as negatively as the Western world, so the Sans, Cuphead, and Shantae costumes coming with music is a big deal for them.
Hence they wouldn't just add music into the game without a big enough reason.
@Alckemy They did their final balance patch update a while back though, even made a big deal about it being the final balance patch update. Obviously, things were discovered since then, but they're never going to do another balance patch.
@Markiemania95 If it's not included in additional waves later on as the Japanese Twitter post says, then it's not a game they consider 'important' enough for spirit representation.
@larryisaman To add onto that, Mario and Kirby are Apples to Apples. Both are relatively easy to play and accessible, if something Mario has doesn't sit well with you, Kirby likely has the solution. If Kirby doesn't work, then there's Mario.
Just because Mario's the mascot doesn't mean that Kirby's just going to drop from the face of the earth (especially since he's under HAL's ownership) especially since there's a ton of audience overlap.
Mario Kart to F-Zero though are Apples to Oranges.
Mario Kart is easy to pick up and play, a normal person could win a race even on the highest speed and difficulty if they're decent and lucky with the items.
F-Zero might be easier on the lower difficulties, but the game gets a bit hectic and the higher skill ceiling to play and play good is what inhibits people from continuing with the game. Some people like a challenge, but that's not the majority who just want to play for a brief fun time.
@larryisaman Not really. HAL owns the majority of the franchise, they can do what they want because the series is their character. Nintendo owns quite a bit of Kirby, enough to put him on a corporate banner (which you don't see with Pokemon), but not enough to forbid Kirby from appearing in anything that HAL develops outside of Nintendo's reach - like say, mobile games.
Case in point, when Activision/Toys For Bob approached Nintendo about having Nintendo cameos in Skylanders Supershargers, they expressed interest in characters like Fox McCloud, and Kirby.
Nintendo said no for both, but for different reasons: Fox because Star Fox Zero was approaching at the time, and Kirby because he was partially owned by HAL Labs, and couldn't license his use. So they went with Donkey Kong and Bowser.
At the end of the day, while I don't believe a new F-Zero isn't being made thanks to Mario Kart, I do believe that the series just wouldn't sell enough to have a new one be worth making.
You can't convince me that if Nintendo announced a new F-Zero, it would sell. We have had a dime a dozen F-Zero clones since the Wii, absolutely none of them had the staying power to scrap up sequels or make their games into established franchises.
But wait, I hear you say "Just port GX onto the Switch and give it Online/All you need is to give it Online and it will be great!" Yeah... Mario Kart 8's Online may be good compared to other Online ventures, but I don't think F-Zero's increased speed, which likely would be faster than Mario Kart's 200cc would convince you that you're actually racing with friends when someone glitches out. You need more to bring the game to life than simply give it Online.
@blindsquarel The idea behind mentioning Star Fox is that no one at Nintendo seems interested in F-Zero. Miyamoto's invested in Star Fox, so down the line another Star Fox game will likely be made because Miyamoto wants another one, despite Star Fox Zero's middling sales practically killing the franchise.
Same reason Metroid was mentioned: It's a series that has a ton of interest by Western developers, and at the same time, that series has Yoshio Sakamoto and Kensuke Tanabe invested in it. Sakamoto was behind Super Metroid and Metroid Dread, as well as Other M. Tanabe was behind the entire Prime series, including Federation Force.
But F-Zero? No one's looking at it. There's no new ideas for it, Mario Kart is more popular, and it's highly expensive to make in terms of graphics because it's like Metroid and unlike anything else which experiments or has cartoony art styles to cut back on costs.
@miitomobenji "Kind of off topic but speaking to the infamous performance issues still plaguing the games, “Outdated hardware” is a terrible excuse for lack of care."
The general excuses people like to give are either "Outdated Hardware" or "Not enough time given to properly develop the games"
For Hardware, sure, the Switch was dated even when it came out by technical standards, the overall issue is that it's clearly about who's at the helm. While a Switch port may not always be as impressive as it is on another system (especially PC because it's easy to pump more processing power into a game to make it run batter) the Switch does prove its worth in doing what it does: playing games. Especially if you have a team familiar with the system.
The issue with Pokémon in this front is that GameFreak, if you look into the data of these games, essentially built the game off the other ones. And while that's great for getting the game ready and out there as a good deal of the legwork is done, you have to realize that eventually that code is going to bog down things.
We already see this with Nintendo Switch Online versions of games, especially if they're running online - they're not meant to be played like that, and I'd argue it would be worse if they were trying to run natively on the Switch's hardware using their old coding instead of running off the application's emulator.
(Or for a more indie approach, the whole issue with Yandere Simulator and its developer's awful coding resulting in high end PCs you'd think would be able to run it smoothly end up with a constantly crashing 15fps at best nightmare.)
Essentially, that's what Pokémon is doing: running old code from the GBA days, with slight improvements from each generation on the DS and 3DS, resulting in a bogged down game that GameFreak had to trim the fat (the Pokémon and the textures) to get the games to run on the system.
For the time excuse, well the biggest ordeal is that they also tend to split the team, and do it intentionally. I get the phrase "too many cooks spoil the kitchen" but if they had more hands, maybe the game would've had at least some improvement on the performance scene. Instead, they split the team to make Legends Arceus which may or may not have been a full Gen 8 take on Diamond and Pearl before focus shifted to a game set in the past while ILCA takes reign on the remakes (which makes sense considering the wilderness areas of PLA would've been easier to make given the experience with the Wild Area & DLC of Sword/Shield while making cities would've prolonged the Diamond/Pearl remakes for a much longer time period)
In the end though, I doubt if the Scarlet/Violet team were given a year or two extra, the games would've had better performance. Every mainline Switch Pokemon game suffers from performance issues, the only exception ironically enough is Let's Go.
Sorry for this long post/reply, had to get my thoughts down.
@Mathieu_B Lot of companies do, unfortunately that's the sad reality for the public who looks at the concept of time differently from soulless corporations.
As long as it's not July 1st, it's "Early ####" - this is a standardized business thing.
@DanijoEX Its GameFreak. They're not really going to patch performance.
There's still performance issues in Legends Arceus and a huge Game Crash Glitch that's still in the game.
GameFreak only cares if you're able to clone Pokémon or there's something like the Luminose City Glitch that prevents people from playing the game. (Unless it's a save deletion glitch, because to them it doesn't matter if you lose progress and have to start over)
Does it run? Well then they're not touching it, even if that means it runs a 5fps.
@PersonaTexas If you're talking The Pokémon Company, the bulk of their billions is in merchandise deals: T-Shirts, Toy Sales, that sort of thing. In the grand scheme of things despite the sales figures for Pokémon games being very impressive for their poor quality, they're still a drop in the bucket compared to everything else.
If you're talking Nintendo, well, I already explained that the fault of Pokémon's poor quality isn't on Nintendo's hands, it's just people pointing fingers at them because 'exclusivity means obviously they must've developed it, right?'
And while Nintendo will make an announcement and SAY things, they technically DON'T have the power to force GameFreak to fix performance issues, which the fact is GameFreak's been haphazardly making Pokémon games for nearly a decade.
They're incompetent at their jobs, and it's clear that its more than just 'not enough time' to develop the game. I guarantee you had GameFreak been given an extra year or two on Scarlet and Violet, we would've still gotten the same steaming pile we got - we probably would've just had something else extra added to the game.
Isn't it convenient that it's RIGHT BEFORE THEIR BIG CONFERENCE with all their investors...
Almost like last year with BDSP and Legends Arceus... Oh, what's that? The delay for HOME for those games was due to BDSP being built in Unity? Well then, amazing how they got it fixed right before the conference then!
@NielsNL That's because despite Nintendo saying things, they ultimately have no power there: they don't develop the game.
It's funny how 90% of Pokémon fans seem to think the games are developed/owned by Nintendo when they're owned and developed primarily by GameFreak, and GameFreak is so often quiet about things. And despite that, 7% of the 10% left and the existing 90% seem to think that Nintendo is in any power to force the games to be updated with better performance. Of course Nintendo's going to say something, they're the ones people are complaining to, but it's not like they can do anything in the first place.
Fact of the matter is, GameFreak is just incompetent. Say all you want about the games being rushed, they intentionally split the team to make Gen 9 and Legends Arceus, meaning they were running half-empty on staff in the first place so no wonder the game's a mess. They really should've focused on one over the other, and while I like Legends Arceus - fun as it is, it's clear that they really should've brought their A game to Scarlet/Violet since Legends Arceus was ultimately not needed, since they outsourced the remakes to ILCA.
I mean, it's not like this series when you take a long hard look back, hasn't been suffering from performance issues the moment GameFreak announced that it wouldn't be taking full advantage of the 3DS' 3D effect for X&Y, maybe even longer than that with Diamond and Pearl's slow Surf speed. But we were distracted with things like ice cream cone Pokémon, what new Megas we might get, how they leaked all of Alola, gimmicky motion controls, and how they're only programming in half the total Pokémon in a game on a home console when a much portable can fit about 800+ Pokémon...
@Eel Actually they were on the Japanese side of things. They said Transporter can only be bought with an active Bank Pass, that if you don't download Transporter before the eShop closes that you can't download it, and that they're not offering reimbursement for those who bought a pass before the service becomes free and the subscription overlaps the eShop closure (i.e. You don't get credit for money spent on a pass)
Now while they didn't actually say Transporter would be usable once Bank becomes free, we all assumed it would - after all it's a part of the app essentially.
We'll just have to wait and see what Nintendo says. And yeah, Nintendo - not Pokemon Company, because Pokemon Company is responding and their advice is essentially "Go complain to Nintendo about it"
And for the Americas - NoA closed their help desk for the night, so it's up to Nintendo of Europe and Nintendo of Japan to respond to this.
@NinjaNicky Buddy if it was a hardware issue then all of the Nintendo Switch games on the system would run as badly as Scarlet and Violet.
Might be something about the developers' coding issues - and considering people are blaming Nintendo instead of GameFreak, it's obvious people don't know who makes the games.
@Noble_Haltmann This IS Smash 6. Sakurai has stated in interviews and his Famitsu columns that Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U were "the 4th and 5th entries in the series" his interview with Kotaku over Mega Man's inclusion also provides it as well.
The thing is, the whole 'For' and 'Four' conotation is an English thing and doesn't apply to the Japanese language.
Not that it matters too much, people just flat out ignore the 3DS game even exists.
Regardless, the next Smash game will likely be Smash 7 - provided Sakurai does to another one. Ultimate was in part a Special thing planned between Sakurai and Iwata prior to Iwata's passing. It's as much Sakurai's baby as it was Iwata's.
Who knows? Sakurai might pull an Itoi and refuse to work on another Smash regardless of how Nintendo pushes him, and Nintendo just like how they honour Itoi by not making any new Mother games after Mother 3, would likely honour Sakurai's wishes and Iwata's memory by not making any more Smash Bros, regardless of how well it would sell.
@Dingelhopper "Also, why haven't we gotten amiibo cards for the new villagers yet? Seriously? They released and added the Sanrio villagers but not the new ones?"
Because for all intents and purposes the Sanrio villagers were reprints back from the collaboration from New Leaf.
I'm guessing likely because a set would just be the new villagers and the slew of specials in Orville/Wilbur/Daisy Mae/Flick/CJ, that they decided it's not the effort, especially when the old sets had 100+ cards per wave.
@Chibi_Manny Most of the DLC characters even in the last game(s) were mostly either reskins of characters that were already in the game (Lucas from Ness, Roy from Marth/Lucina) or just humanoid in general. Cartoony characters require a ton more work which was likely why K. Rool had to wait for Smash Ultimate. As much as Arle would be a cool option, characters that would be easy to to implement by having a similar framework are the more likely candidates.
As for this final character, we might get a more original character if like last time the final character is announced in December, although this time they release in December as well, otherwise September's Direct would likely showcase another humanoid character from yet another Japanese game series.

@Croctopus I doubt we’ll get a deluxe version.
The only games that had the DLC included at a later date were limited runs of Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet.
And if the rumors of the next system are worth their salt, we’ll likely just have Smash Ultimate be backwards compatible, since they still make a ton of money on the game normally and all the DLC.

@Matt_jota They make Mario Sports games, specifically Golf and Tennis and that's it.

And then people thought that bringing Issac in Smash as a fighter would renew interest...

@blindsquarel The idea behind mentioning Star Fox is that no one at Nintendo seems interested in F-Zero. They're incompetent at their jobs, and it's clear that its more than just 'not enough time' to develop the game. I guarantee you had GameFreak been given an extra year or two on Scarlet and Violet, we would've still gotten the same steaming pile we got - we probably would've just had something else extra added to the game.
Re: Pokémon HOME Getting Scarlet And Violet Support In Update Next Week
Isn't it convenient that it's RIGHT BEFORE THEIR BIG CONFERENCE with all their investors...
Almost like last year with BDSP and Legends Arceus... Oh, what's that? The delay for HOME for those games was due to BDSP being built in Unity? Well then, amazing how they got it fixed right before the conference then!
Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Version 1.3.1 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
Re: PSA: Pokémon Bank Is Now "Free To Use" On Nintendo 3DS
Re: Feature: 5 Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Quality Of Life Updates We Still Want To See
@NinjaNicky Buddy if it was a hardware issue then all of the Nintendo Switch games on the system would run as badly as Scarlet and Violet.
Might be something about the developers' coding issues - and considering people are blaming Nintendo instead of GameFreak, it's obvious people don't know who makes the games.
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final DLC Fighter Has Arrived - Sora From Kingdom Hearts
@Porky That was meant mostly for veterans.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 13.0.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
@Deepdoop Oh, they're going to update the game again. Maybe not with a new character, but maybe a new update for another set of balance patches.
They have to update the game to make the new amiibo compatible before they release.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 13.0.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - July 2021
@dBackLash July/August has never really been the big release month, for major titles and for smaller titles.
Most companies expect people to spend more of their time outside with friends/family, pandemic withheld of course.
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 1.11.0 Patch Notes - Seasonal Events, Fixes And More
Cool. Nothing notable, moving on.
It's clear the team abandoned this game to work more on Splatoon 3.
I guess I'll just enjoy the serene landscape of what I got...
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 1.11.0 Patch Notes - Seasonal Events, Fixes And More
@Dingelhopper "Also, why haven't we gotten amiibo cards for the new villagers yet?
Re: Halo Dev Says It Would Be "Amazing" To See Master Chief In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
