I wonder why Nintendo Switch Sports is selling so well. I mean it is not like it is the most obvious big-selling switch game, at least not to me. It would be more logical if other Switch games sold many copies. Like pokemon or animal crossing.

Wow, i would think a game like Street Fighter VI would be a lot bigger and sell a lot more copies in Japan than just around 30 000 copies the first few weeks.
Maybe the japanese audience thinks SF VI is to adjusted to american or european standards both graphically and in the content?
Or maybe they prefer playing their fighting games in arcades?
@S83 yeah i agree with you about what you say but the thing is inflation is actually not measured long term, it is measured one month compared to the same month a year earlier. So when you look at inflation on a year to year-basis, you compare may 2022 to may 2023 and april 2022 to april 2023 and so on.
I guess it is to get rid of seasonal changes (like prices soaring in december and lowering in january, or things related to weather like heating costs).
Even so, i think you are spot on in your comment. It is hard to see how a single game would affect the economy as a whole. Expecially considering how Zelda for Switch is not more expensive than other big sellers like Hogwarts Legacy for example.
If Zelda was like 80 pounds and made other gaming companies raise their prices of their games to 80 pounds, then it could perhaps be a more significant effect. But this is clearly not happening.
@Nintendencies nah i feel like games are and were always kind of overpriced. You pay like 2-3 times as much for a game compared to a movie and in most cases the movie had a higher budget than the game.
gaming subscriptions give very nice value for money though.
@Enigk i live in sweden and i have not heard about "The Beyonce Effect" but maybe i just missed it.
High prices on food has been a huge topic. As well as how a weak swedish currency (swedish krona, SEK) contributes to price increases on goods imported to sweden from other countries.
If someone imports an item to sweden then they need to exchange more swedish krona to pay for the item in dollars or euro or yen or pounds if the swedish currency krona is weak. and so they pass on the increased cost to the swedish consumers who might need to pay for example 4495 swedish krona for an LED Switch console instead of 4195 swedish krona.
Some people think Sweden should join the Euro currency. But staying out of the Euro was a benefit during the time when the economy crashed in especially greece, italy, spain and portugal.
the inflation in Sweden is also affected a bit from high prices on electricity i guess. But it was worse during the winter. Now the electric prices are on a more normal level. (Maybe someone used Pikachu and it was super effective or something.)
But as a whole, swedish inflation is still quite a lot higher than in some other countries. I think swedish inflation (year to year) is at 6 or 7 % still. And 2 % is the goal.
@Arcata yeah "PC" is usuall used as a reference to a PC running some kind of Windows OS. At least it used to be.
Nowadays and since quite a few years, it is not just Windows and Mac. Google and Linux have taken a few pieces of the market share for computer Operating systems too.
But for a stranger, it is weird but for people with some general knowledge i think most people get how when someone says "PC" they are actually refering to a Windows PC. (Like the one i use right now when writing the post)
But technically, a macintosh is a personal computer and an xbox is a kind of gaming computer just for games (well, mostly for games). I mean, in a technical sense, an xbox is just another kind of computer. But in more practical terms, i think people expect a computer to be able to do a lot of things which an xbox is not able to like using image editing software, word writing software... (Xbox is actually able to do some of it if you use the built in web browser Microsoft Edge for Xbox and use web based software like the office programs "office 365" and Xbox is also compatible with a keyboard.)
Also, "video games" is a term which sort of implies you play on a tv, not a computer screen. But some video game consoles are usable with a computer type screen as well.
In sweden we do not say video games. We say tv games instead. For some reason. The term video game is usually used in sweden by people who do not play or know much about gaming and directly translated something they read in english about video games. But anyone who actually plays video games in Sweden would say tv games. Or "tv-spel", which is the swedish phrase in swedish.
Switch and game boy does also count as "tv games" despite the fact they are not played on a tv. (Well, in Switch s case, they could be played on both a tv and on the switch screen..)
@stache13 wow, i think you are way off with your comment. The situation in Germany in 1922 and 1923 was hyper inflation, a completely different thing.
Governments are not printing out a lot of money, they try to restrain the economy.
And nowadays, the federal reserve and other national banks are independent when they decide on the interest rates. Higher interest rates could reduce inflation.
Also, nowadays banks create new money into the system when they allow people to loan money.
Your comment about governments printing more money seems kind of inaccurate.
The thing about Zelda is it launched for a pricier and more expensive price than usual for a Switch game so it might contribute a little bit, but for games as a whole i think the increase of games occured much earlier in 2020 when prices of PS5 games got a higher price tag than prices for PS4 games.
Zelda is just one game too, and it should not affect prices so much.
Unless other games get a higher price tag too. But Zelda has the same price as most ps5 games i think. So people probably did not spend more on it than on the latest harry potter game or star wars game or resident evil game.
Wow what a bad article. Nothing about the previous events which lead to Embracer problems now.
It was a huge deal which fell through.
Not an irresponsible spending spree like the article suggests or insinuates.
They aquired many companies, yes. But they kept everything financed with loans or investors (like Saudi Arabia, they own like 9% of the company).
And now, a deal did not work out with a partner. It was a very big news story here in Sweden in some economics sections. The stock fell like 40 or 44 % in a single day.
The article at Nintendo life does not give the proper background or explains the previous underlying events which lead to the news. It feels kind of lazy written.
It looks interesting but with my big hands and long fingers, i would still like something even bigger to grab on to.
But for 60 dollars i guess i might consider buying it. If it was 30 or 40 dollars i would not think so much, then i would just buy it i guess. If it works for OLED Switch / Switch XL.
@TioRogerio Yeah FIFA is kind of cool to play in a portable way. Also i think there are not many options for sports games in Switch. Except for Nintendo sports games like Mario Strikers And NBA 2K.
Why is FIFA 23 high on the charts but NHL 23 is not even on the chart at all? There must be something wrong with the charts! NHL 23 is much better than FIFA 23 and more fun and with more fast action. Maybe people in UK do not like ice hockey as much as they SHOULD!
Konami is playing their cards right. Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill are some of their more modern hits and maybe better to bet money on than Castlevania, Gradius, Contra, Track n field or other old school games with a more limited target audience.
A new track n field game for cell phones might be cool.
I wonder how they might be able to port the fourth game. I think MGS 4 was developed for PS4 and used the hard drive and blu ray disc format to improve the game. Which is probably a big reason for not bringing it to Xbox 360 later on.
And it did not get a re-release on PS4 or Xbox One either. Maybe it is trickier to bring it to other platforms if it was kind of tailor made for PS3.
They could always make a completely new build though. Just use old assets and some code from the previous PS4 version, but a new game engine. But then it could turn out to be a bad port.
I think the violence is kind of horrible. I do not think we have come "far". Things have gotten worse. The latest MK games are far worse and more explicit with gore, blood and graphic content. I do not like the way things are going, i would not call it progression if a society or societies accepts more and more violent material as normal or natural.
The age ratings are just recommendations, not restrictions, at least in some countries.
Kind of sad how biased the article is too. Notice how the writer describes the finishing moves on SNES as "boring" and how he clearly expresses his own opinions here: "but to see Nintendo embrace the violence depicted in Mortal Kombat is a nice change of pace for the notoriously strict company.".
I do not know, why should a company which sells cute games like Kirby and Pokemon aimed for kids "embrace" very violent games like Mortal Kombat 1, which are clearly not appropriate for kids?
Maybe Nintendo should not forbid the game to release on Switch but i do not think it should be embraced either.
And it is kind of hypocricy how many players and comapneis are extremely sensitive to some things (some tend to complain about representation for example) but completely open to violence. It is kind of a double standard really. Anything goes with violence but nudity or poor representation is sensitive matters. Or female stereotypes. Or how you are only able to choose a male or female character in some games, which makes a very vocal type of people shout about gender and such things.
Yeah, it is quite clear how some topics are much more sensitive than others.
Making fun about how some people have critical views about violence and writing about the whole thing as kind of a joke, meanwhile no one dares to joke about other things or take them lightly. I do not know what others think, but personally i think it is far worse for a kid to get exposed to a lot of violence (especially immoral violence, such as in GTA V) than how a character is slightly stereotypical or how some games feature an all white cast of heroes. It is kind of tiresome.
@N8tiveT3ch Street Fighter 6 is also having some new assists if you try the demo. Easier to perform some special moves now.
I could not play it on Ps5 without buying a PS5. I have not seen a PS4/PS5 comparison.
I could perhaps play it on Xbox Series S if i have not sold my Series S by then, but then i would need to buy the game digitally. I want some cash so i am thinking about selling my Xbox Series S.
I think Street fighter is the better game but it is a matter of taste ai guess. Mortal Kombat is pobably better now compared to the early days with pre rendered photograph graphics.
@FirstEmperor A PS2 was much cheaper than a Wii which is much more important to explain why PS2 kept selling after the launch of PS3 and 360. What you definitely fail to understand is how important the price is. PS2 was much cheaper than Wii.
DS was also cheap, but just like PSP, it was a portable unit so it does not compare at all really.
PS2 was the budget option and it appealed to people instead of PS3 or Xbox 360 because of price. Not because it had a different target audience than Wii. Sure, Wii might have had different games and a slightly younger target audience, but PS2 in 2005-2008 also targetet a younger audience with games like eye toy, buzz m.m.
Hardcore gamers were not very perticularly interested in "below average quality" - titles for PS2 in comparison to stuff like Resistance or Gears of War. Like, who wants to play timesplitters future perfect for PS2 with sub par frame rate, graphics and online options when Xbox 360 is right there instead?
No, PS2 sold a lot to families and kids the last years. Or casual players who even considered Wii expensive.
Not just the titles i mentioned, but also games like Lego Star Wars.
Of course a comparison between Ps2 generation and current generation is tough to make since things have changed a lot since then. Market has grown a lot, people have more money to spend in general. 110 million sold units then is maybe even more impressive, considering a few things like for example how big market share PS2 had and how Ps2 was not a console with multiple new editions. Some families have two or three switches, one for each kid. The families hardly had a PS2 console for every kid. I think it is not fair to even compare. But PS2 was so much cheaper than Switch is so of course it sold a lot.. If Nintendo lowers the price, they might sell a lot of Switches for a few more years. But perhaps people are more eager to move on to next gen now compared to then. My guess is Switch 2 might launch for 300 or 350 dollars (with a new Mario game or Mario Kart 9), and Switch 1 might drop to 200 dollars and 150 dollars for Switch Lite, or 130 dollars for Switch Lite. But lowering the price too much on Switch and Switch Lite might hurt sales o Switch 2.
@jco83 Yeah i kind of think the same thing, the violence is very gory and graphic. Maybe it was "fun" in the old days with all the exaggerated violence and the ridiculous amount of blood because it was absurd, fun in an absurd kind of way, but now with such realistic graphics, it is kind of disgusting instead.
@N8tiveT3ch no not worth it, if you just want to watch how it runs, watch it on twitch. But if you want to play the game, maybe buy it. I think i pass on mortal kombat as a whole and stay with Street Fighter..
Kind of funny how the both games are released only a few months apart. An old rivalry still ongoing.
@Serpenterror I think they locked the shang tsung fellow to make people pay a little bit extra except for the basic price. Maybe he should not be a dlc figure.
Anyway, i am probably not getting Mortal Kombat 1 on Switch or on any other system either. Too brutal for me and i have not played the previous games either for quite a while. I think i played some MK vs DC universe a few years ago. Many years ago actually. If anything, i should get SF 6.
@anoyonmus It is cool to get it on Switch if you want to play it on the go. Otherwise, perhaps better to get the PS5 version. I think the difference could be quite significant.
@Serpenterror Dude, i think everyone is aware about it. Stop lecturing about defining current generation, it is kind of a ridiculous "side quest" or side discussion. But Switch hardware is not current generation - competitive. Of course, hardware matters a lot when you take a PS5 generation game and put it on Switch hardware which is probably somewhere between PS3 and PS4. Nintendo did not even do a "Switch Pro" to better keep up.
I wonder if hogwart s legacy (for switch) is delayed because of technical reasons or because they want to wait for everyone to buy and play Zelda.
@GamingFan4Lyf of course the resolution is lower. Switch games are not in 4K. The question is perhaps how much lower the resolution could be before it looks kind of terrible.
I think Switch is doing great and it might not reach same sales as Nintendo DS but......... it could still earn more money for Nintendo if Nintendo earns more money from the sale of each Switch unit than each DS unit. In such a way, the Switch could be more successful.
Also, Nintendo might earn more from selling gamepads and joy-cons on Switch than they did from selling extra stuff on DS.
And a DS game was maybe only like 40 dollars, not 60 dollars, so maybe they earn more money from the game sales too.
In one way, Switch might be more successfull than DS, if you look at the game sales and the dollars (+ euro, yen and others) from hardware sales.
Yeah, i think PS2 was so successful because the competition at the time largely failed. The PS2 outsold Gamecube about 7:1 ratio i think in hardware. In Japan, Xbox almost did not exist (which is still probably the cas with newer Xboxes).
And PS2 outsold Xbox about 6:1 i think.
PS2 sold huge numbers even before Xbox 360 and Ps3 launched. But Xbox 360, and Wii, really changed everything. Commercially, Xbox and Xbox One are failures from Microsoft but Xbox 360 was a console where they did almost everything right.
Xbox Series S / X are maybe doing okay but Microsoft almost seems complacient about being last. They are not in it to sell most consoles now, they want to be no 1 with subscriptions and cloudy games.
Actually, i would say Xbox Series S / X are not doing okay right now, with some big games either getting poor reviews or delays, and not enough exclusive games. But Microsoft might not need a lot of big games to get the subscribers to game pass.
As an Xbox owner, it is kind of nice to get all the games to play on Game Pass. But it is kind of not nice to have such few AAA releases and a lot of time in between them. But the Xbox sale proposition to customers is still kind of nice, especially as a subscription and available even on pc and phones and as a cloud device on a tv. and Xbox Series S is kind of cheap. But as for exclusvie games, Microsoft is not in great shape.
Anyway, i think Switch might sell a few more units but Switch right now is not very cheap compared to significantly more powerful Xbox Series S. So i think there is not a big competitive advantage with the price. Switch Lite is only 100 dollars cheaper than Series S i think. PS2 perhaps had a bigger competitive advantage.
But on the other hand, Nintendo might lower the price for Switch Lite from 200 to 150 dollars and then it suddenly is quite a lot cheaper than Xbox Series S.
And i think Wii and DS appealed to almost the same markets. Maybe Wii was a bit more for adult-casual gamers and DS more for kid gamers. But the target audience was kind of the same. And the games were kind of the same too, same style of games, cute and friendly style. Except for a few Wii games like Red Steel and the Conduit.
I think the Nintendo target audience has been kind of the same for most part of the last 20 years. Maybe they tried to expand it a bit with Wii U. (A console for both We and You.)
"The PS2 had sold around 110 million after 6 years, so the Switch is tracking well ahead of it. What’ll make the PS2 difficult to surpass is the fact than next gen was so expensive at launch, so it continued to sell well several years into the life of the PS3 and XB360. Add the fact that the Wii and DS appealed to different markets and you have a unique situation that probably won’t repeat itself here, since I can’t see Nintendo charging $600 for Switch 2.
Of course, Switch only needs to sell 30 million in the time it took PS2 (post PS3 launch) to sell 45 million. Definitely possible."
Actually, i think you are wrong, what made PS2 successful was largely a super strong position on the market and strong brand and how all the competition failed.
Sega run out of money and could not match PS2 with Dreamcast. Nintendo Gamecube was released too late, so was Xbox. Gamecube had some other problems too. It was quite cheap but the game library was a bit limited and it released at a point in time when people were a bit bored of Nintendo perhaps and wanted some more adult games (now when we are all adult, we want nostalgic nintendo games again) and the kids probably for the most part got a GBA instead. I mean, gamecube had a great game library in the typical Nintendo genres but not in some other genres. And it only had 1,5 GB discs.
Xbox was also too late and too pricey at launch too, and kind of a niche product for hardcore gamers with a lot of typical western games, and both the machine and the first gamepad was a bit clumpsy. I think Xbox was great for FPS games and online gaming at the time. But it was not at all as mainstream as the PS2. PS2 at the time was quite okay but Xbox had better graphics. Better textures, less flickering. PS2 had much bigger franchises and games. Like GTA games which only eventually, like in 2004 maybe, made it to Xbox. Xbox did have a huge hit with Halo though.
"Since, I didn't see anyone mention this there was two news reports come out of Japan today that said Nintendo wasn't going to release any hardware till 2024 and it wouldn't be seen until Q1 of next year. It was from a source inside Nintendo, allegedly."
I think a new Nintendo hardware might get a march 2024 release. Maybe april 2024. or even may 2024. But i bet it is march 2024. It would be my first bet.
With Mario Kart 9, Metroid Prime 4, Splatoon 3 deluxe and Super Mario Islands.
As well as some ports of big 3rd party games previously unavailable for Nintendo consoles perhaps.
@theModestMouse yeah perhaps paying to win might not be necessary unless you want to be among the best. And i do not think i might be among the best anyway. (But maybe with a lot of practice. . )
A lot of free to play games are kind of like, you need to pay to gain a small advantage and the small advantage is only necessary against the best players.
@BTB20 Yeah but i think at least dreamlight valley was included in game pass. Still not free though. But at least available if you are a subscriber to game pass. I have not tried it myself. But it seems kind of nice and fun.
By the time it goes free to play, the "founders pack players" are so far ahead it could be a really rough grind to catch up to them if you get more items the more you play the game.
Some gamers who wait for the free to play version might end up paying money anyway just to catch up to the players who have a head start.
Sneaky, gameloft. And a well thought plan to get even the free to play players to spend some money.
But not me, no, i am spending my money on precious amiibos instead. Or chocolate. Or both. Or maybe a horse. Probably not a horse. How much does a horse cost anyway?
@rjejr it could be a while before the free to play game gets to become an actual free to play game. I am thinking maybe.....during the summer. But with less optimism, it could take until next year.
@rjejr But Arkantos means it is a mobile phone game because it shares some typical elements in mobile games, i think. Not just because the developer is Gameloft, who usually develops a lot of games for phones.
I would not agree with him though, but i think it is what he meant.
But i feel like the production values in the game is more similar to any average AAA free to play game for a game console. Or most f2p games, anyway.
Gameloft is sort of moving on from the phone game segment. Both with dreamlight valley and the disney racer game.
"but to ensure we deliver the best combat-racing experience, we're opening an Early Access period first. During the Early Access period, fans on all available platforms who purchase a Founder’s Pack will be among the first to race in Disney Speedstorm and will get Racers, exclusive cosmetic items, Tokens (in-game currency) and Golden Pass Credits that they’ll retain once the game launches as free-to-play. This period will also allow players to become one of the many helpful voices providing necessary feedback to determine the future of the game’s player experience"
Basically, they charge people money, about 30 dollars, to join the open beta or early access game instead of limiting the amount of people and sending out codes.

@GrailUK smart money if you could bet on it. But there is no bet for console sales i think.

What, Xbox Series S and Series X has only sold about 0,46 million units in Japan?!
Not very much. So far behind PS5 it is ridiculous almost.

Why is FIFA 23 high on the charts but NHL 23 is not even on the chart at all? There must be something wrong with the charts! NHL 23 is much better than FIFA 23 and more fun and with more fast action. Maybe people in UK do not like ice hockey as much as they SHOULD!
Re: UK Charts: Not Even Street Fighter 6 Can Knock Zelda: TOTK Off Its Throne
@Anti-Matter maybe 30 game collection volume 1 is on sale and much cheaper than volume 2?
Re: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Announced For "The Latest Platforms"
Konami is playing their cards right. Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill are some of their more modern hits and maybe better to bet money on than Castlevania, Gradius, Contra, Track n field or other old school games with a more limited target audience.
A new track n field game for cell phones might be cool.
Re: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Announced For "The Latest Platforms"
Re: Random: Nintendo Embraces Mortal Kombat's Gore In Stark Contrast To '90s Censorship
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
Re: Switch Hardware Sales Now Over 125 Million, PS2, Nintendo DS Target Still A Way Off
@FirstEmperor A PS2 was much cheaper than a Wii which is much more important to explain why PS2 kept selling after the launch of PS3 and 360.
Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Is Japan's 7th Biggest Game Launch Of All Time
What a great success for Nintendo. Congratulations, Nintendo. Especially the Zelda team. Great work and it sells great too.
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
@jco83 Yeah i kind of think the same thing, the violence is very gory and graphic. Maybe it was "fun" in the old days with all the exaggerated violence and the ridiculous amount of blood because it was absurd, fun in an absurd kind of way, but now with such realistic graphics, it is kind of disgusting instead.
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
@N8tiveT3ch no not worth it, if you just want to watch how it runs, watch it on twitch. But if you want to play the game, maybe buy it. I think i pass on mortal kombat as a whole and stay with Street Fighter..
Kind of funny how the both games are released only a few months apart. An old rivalry still ongoing.
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
@Serpenterror I think they locked the shang tsung fellow to make people pay a little bit extra except for the basic price. Maybe he should not be a dlc figure.
Anyway, i am probably not getting Mortal Kombat 1 on Switch or on any other system either. Too brutal for me and i have not played the previous games either for quite a while. I think i played some MK vs DC universe a few years ago. Many years ago actually. If anything, i should get SF 6.
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
@N8tiveT3ch i played the Street Fighter VI demo on PS4 and i did not notice any problems.
But it is probably just me who did not notice the problems. I have not compared it to other versions.
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
@anoyonmus It is cool to get it on Switch if you want to play it on the go. Otherwise, perhaps better to get the PS5 version. I think the difference could be quite significant.
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Confirmed For Switch, Launching September
@GamingFan4Lyf of course the resolution is lower. Switch games are not in 4K. The question is perhaps how much lower the resolution could be before it looks kind of terrible.
Re: Switch Hardware Sales Now Over 125 Million, PS2, Nintendo DS Target Still A Way Off
I think Switch is doing great and it might not reach same sales as Nintendo DS but......... it could still earn more money for Nintendo if Nintendo earns more money from the sale of each Switch unit than each DS unit.
Re: Switch Hardware Sales Now Over 125 Million, PS2, Nintendo DS Target Still A Way Off
@Simon97 (continue)

@FirstEmperor wrote:

Re: Nintendo Reconfirms Release Windows For Upcoming Switch Games, And It's Slim Pickings
Does anyone else think Metroid Prime could get a march 2024 release for both Switch and "Super Switch" ??
4K resolution for the Super Switch version and 1080 p for the Switch version.
Also, i think there is a new 3D Mario game en route. But could it be a game for Super Switch, or for regular Switch?
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
@BTB20 Yeah but i think at least dreamlight valley was included in game pass. Still not free though. But at least available if you are a subscriber to game pass. I have not tried it myself. But it seems kind of nice and fun.
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
@rjejr it could be a while before the free to play game gets to become an actual free to play game. I am thinking maybe.....during the summer. But with less optimism, it could take until next year.
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
@ottoecamn i do not even know exactly what nerf means, is it when they decrease the stats?
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
@ComfyAko exactly how fun was Chocobo GP for you?
7/10? I have not tried it yet. But i might pick up Garfield Kart for about 3 bucks soon.
Re: Disney Speedstorm Won't Nerf Monsters, Inc. Racer Mike Wazowski
