Glad to see so much love for Tropical Freeze both in this article and also in the comments. Tropical Freeze blew my mind when I played it. I kept thinking how back when I was a kid a game like this would have seemed like the ultimate fantasy, kind of like how the propoganda in Nintendo Power magazine hyped us up to think that the upcoming Super Nintendo was made by the silicon valley tech wizards at Industrial Light and Magic on their supercomputers. Yes the Super Nintendo was amazing and yes DKC looked incredible, but that was all a bunch of rubbish. All of us kids believed it though. Tropical Freeze to me though made me go back there in my mind and relive all that over again.
Bought and played all Joymasher's games on release. They are solid, wouldn't call them top tier though. I mean they're a tier, maybw s. but not god tier. those top tiers of neo pixel art 2d platformers? shovel knight and cyber shadow come to mind. there aren't many. so really you do have to give joymasher credit. lots of games that I consider to be fellow a tier games can sometimes seem like b tier once you master them. games like the sgng successors maldita castilla and volgar, and the dkc successors yooka layle 2, jet pack and and kaze, but even those are more sub genres than traditional platformers. even tho yber shadow would fit Into the ninja Gaiden successor sub genre, there ain't that many. and when do you stop dividing a genre. lots of b tier platformers that offer alot of content. games like Goblin Sword and the like. many hybrids that fall into the roguelite or meteoidvania subgenres that would be really high tier I'd they were traditional platformers. some amazing run n guns and some amazing rpg platformers. some amazing triple a newbs from og franchises too. luke gng res. and the new blaster master games.some are s tier at least if not god.of course tropical freeze is god tier but it's not pixel art or retro and it's triple a and arguably belongs to a sub genre. a few budget titles from the previously mentioned category like goblin sword are pushing toward a tier maybe even s, like dojoran. mix it with allthe collections acailable for switch and its hard to find games to dorectly compare this small group to. forgot tho....... bloodstained 1 and 2 are up there with the yacht club games. anyway.... just thoughts. I know my style of commenting comes across as amateur to some. but I'm pretty knowledgeable and og. beat mega man on launch. beat smb in arcade on launch. so yeah. not bragging but i aint no newb. kinda casual hardcore collector and player. jack of many master of none.I just don't apply my editing skills to commenting on forums. time is money. I may have forgotten some. this ain't a thesis after all
@JaxonH also, have u played curse of the dead gods or undermine? pretty much the two best roguelites in existence. if u can't get into them, the genre probably isn't for you
@JaxonH that's not accurate. it's hard to have an actual conversation on here, and I'm too tired to explain. but u got it wrong about the difference between the genres. I can explain if u want to have an actual conversation. and man..... yes I was negative. I'm sorry I'm a d*** sometimes. I apologize. I just have my pet peeves and one is people who call roguelites roguelikes
@fenlix no! don't dismiss the shovel knight ight franchise or yacht club games. cyber shadow is top tier and underrated and so is shovel knight dig! dig in!
@JaxonH you are entitled to your personal taste, although I usually say that I don't play a genre rather than that I don't like it. there are good games in most genres, but not all genres are for everyone. but aside from your wording, I have no issue with you not "liking" roguelikes and roguelikes. the issue I have with your reply is what exactly you mean by not making a distinction between a roguelike and a roguelite. there has to be a distinction made because they are two quite different genres of games. the odds are that you have not played any roguelikes. very few exist on modern platforms. you have mainly played roguelites. so also, how can you say you don't "like" roguelikes when you have not played one? I am just confused and irritated by your statement. I have a feeling you are ignorant and a lazy conversationalist
Just wanted to post here that if anyone is still either on the fence about this game, or just wishlisted it, just buy it. Why you ask? Well first off, wishlisting this is pointless because it probably will rarely go on sale and even then not for much. Secondly, the game is legit. You will get your money's worth as soon as you listen to the first song. The first level song, which you will hear at the beggining of every run, is an absolute banger. so yeah, just buy it. dont believe me, listen for yourself: (skip to four minutes and thirty six seconds to hear the first level track)https://youtu.be/ptP1d0OV9NY when a roguelite has music like this, that goes a long way for me. and I would expect no less from the legendary shovel knight franchise.
Why has no one mentioned that rhis game is worthfar less cosidering that the only thing we are really buying it for is half the classic games. Sonic 1 and 2 are already available to us on our switches in the excellent Sega ages ports and also on our genesis minis. so we are buying this for sonic 3 and knuckles and sonic cd. I ain't using up precious micro sd card space for that. give me physical or no buyo bro.
@SteamEngenius I agree with you. For a non rogue-lite card game to have any relevance in a world full of online only player versus player collectible card games and rogue-lite card battlers it needs to be of an extremely high quality. Notice that this game is being published by Devolver Digital however, so an extremely high quality it may have. The demo is downloading on my Nintendo Switch as we speak. To say that anyone not familiar with Devolver Digital yet needs to be would be an understatement.
@doctorhino it looks nothing like dead cells. and it's nothing like dead cells besides being a 2d platformer and a rogue lite. it resembles Celeste in that it has a wall cling mechanic and a dash move. that's why they chose to reference it. it is a sloppy review. the game is fantastic tho. and not near as hard as the review makes it out to be. it's an s tier roguelite. if u want more info let me know, that is unless u already bought it. I know this thread is old
old thread I know, but how many of yall bought the game? I'm really enjoying it so far. and I'm pretty sure the soundtrack was done by the same person who does the soundtracks for the Sydney hunter games.
@MrVariant Your comment does not make much sense. Rogue-lites are popular, but there are only twenty or so top tier ones. The same goes for Metroidvanias. A few great games fit into both of these sub genres, but not many. Otherwise, they are two different things. What's your point, by the way? It is far trendier to say there are far too many rogue-lites and Metroidvanias than is is to create or play them. Also, do you even know what the difference is between a rogue-lite and a roguelike? Go Google it and then form some kind of smart reply, or don't because this thread is almost three years old.
Where is the naughtiness? After Waifu Uncovered the bar is high. Also, is the game any good? I have my hands full, literally, with triple a quality modern traditional two dimensional platformer video games as well metroidvanias. especially metroidvanias. It has come to the point where I have to buy some of them to realize they are trash. where others are good, but none beat that little white horned beetle or whatever he is
This is a very misleading review, and that in itself is a dissapointment. I rely on Nintendo Life to provide me with accurate information. After reading rhis review I got excited about the game and bought it. What I played was in no way in the same league as SOR4. Be warned. I won't go into the details. Just don't buy the game.
No review yet. This is probably to help rhe big N sell as many digital copies as they can before the reviews come out and people realize that Smelter is better. For those of you who do not know, Smelter is a masterpiece that launched earlier this year and is the spiritual successor to Actraiser.
They finally reviewed it and gave it a six, and this after they had hyped it up with several articles which prompted a good amount of fan raving. Sloppy, Nintendo Life.
The odds are that this game is nothing special. Nintendo Life has done this many times. They hype up a game and then fail to even review it when it launches. Then for us consumers it will become backlogged and forgotten. Meanwhile that equates to another twenty bucks down the drain for each of us. Nintendo Life, do us a favor and review this one. If you give it less than a score of seven, remove this article from the world wide web. It is basically an advertisement for the game. It makes me wonder who pays for these kind of articles to be made. This is not to say that there is not a chance for this game to be great especially considering that tribute games has released a couple of stone cold modern classics. Take Flinthook for example. It is one of my all time favorite roguelites. Lets face it though, the "run n gun" genre, at this point in time, is a tough marketplace. For anyone who keeps up on modern two dimensional gaming, I should not have to explain why. There needs to be an evolution of this particular genre. Even if this game is as good as Blazing Chrome and Valfaris combined, it may still not constitute a requisite purchase for many collectors. Games of this genre, at this point in time, also have to compete with the Contra collection. Besides that, they need to blaze new ground to make themselves worthwhile to play. Hypothetically there are many ways for a game of this genre to do that. One is to fit into a sub genre of some type, like the "roguelite"/ "run n gun" sub genre for instance. In summary, in the name of Corona and for gaming's sake, Nintendo Life, regardless of whether this title is good or bad, please review it. I can not stand when you release an article advertising a game like this, and then never release a review. Does anyone remember a game called Tigger Witch? A few months ago Nintendo Life released several articles praising it to high heaven before it's release. Then when it released they failed to review it. That was no surprise! I smelled a lemon from the moment I glanced Trigger Witch's first screenshots, and playing through the demo on my X Box one X confirmed my citrus suspicions. The game was a gigantic reeking pile of hot, sticky, eternally living dog feces. I still remember the smell. Yet, there were a handful of gaming websites and YouTube channels spouting praise for the game. All of this made me wonder what sort of petty indie developer politics were taking place behind the scenes. In my mind, when Nintendo Life promotes a game and then does not review it, it should be considered common sense for anyone who read about the game to assume that Nintendo Life backed out of reviewing it as a result of it not being up to snuff. Or am I deluding myself? Tell me fellow gamers, what am I? Am I a drunken conspiracy theorist, sitting next to Norm in Cheers and slowly digging myself an existential grave which I will never crawl out of, or am I on to something?
@RiasGremory RGT85 seems like a total jackass. I realized after watching him for years that I was tired of him. he just doesn't seem like a nice person in real life and he has never responded to me. most other YouTubers have talked with me.
you work for them? because I don't wanna go down that road if you do. I've been ganged up on by people on review websites before. and also to be clear I'm a huge fan of nintendo life most of the time. its just that occasionally they review bad games very highly and it is circumspect. but anyway, I only want to talk about it to you if you do not work for nintendo life or know people who do. because when I get ganged up on. you people who run the sites or develop the games, it feels like I'm not being allowed to be free to speak my mind, which is unconstitutional. but if you do not work for them, then it's fine. and we can can about it.
So...... anyone going out and paying 60 bucks for this game should definitely check out RGT85's video on it beforehand. He had some pretty nasty things to say about it. Also, as much as I hate to say it, Nintendo Life seems to, albeit rarely, give paid off reviews to games that are in reality far much worse than their review implies. I do not collect this series, but I research games for the Nintento Switch, and I just happened to notice a large conflict between what RGT85 said about this game and how it reviewed on Nintendo Life. Also, keep in mind it scored a 6 on IGN, which often haooenes when they review games on other platforms, but in this case, the difference in a 6 and an 8 is pretty large. considering the game is a Nintendo Switch exclusive.
The game is *****, and u can play the demo on x box game pass to see how *****. Also, I found a YouTube review from some no name Channel that was praising the game, and when I commented that I thought it was *****, I was ripped a new one by the channels owner as well as one of the games actual developers. seems like someone may be trying to convince review sites that the game isn't the piece of crap it is. I hope nintendo life doesn't fall into the same trap. I worry because they said in the preview that the demo was good. the demo lasted like 3 minutes and was absolute garbage. just a warning, folks. take 9t from someone who has owned a switch since day one and owns over 500 games, most of them recommended by Nintendo life. steer clear of this one. it rips off alttp in all the worst ways. you want a great Zelda esque game, play deaths door once it comes out on switch, or on another platform now .spend your 20 bucks on something worthwhile.
@AmplifyMJ You did not need to use the word literally where you did. It detracts from your comment and makes you sound like a "valley boy/girl". I do not intend to be disrespectful to you. I am simply expressing my opinion. We are in the midst of the literally grammer apocalypse. The word is the most rampantly misused word in the English language among today's teens, young adults and thirty somethings. It is quite the cultural phenomenon, and one that I find to be cringe worthy. I understand that you and all of the hundred of thousands of other people who are saying and writing the word in this context are for the most part not intentionally butchering it's pedigree. I also understand the meaning that you have all ascribed to it. It has replaced the word seriously, and that is odd. Misusing the word seriously for emphasis was a bad habit, but replacing it with the word literally is far worse. For me it stands out like a sore thumb, and that makes it particularly painful for me when I hear it being used all over television and I see it being printed in novels. Just think about it. That is all i ask.
@the8thark I have not even read your "article" in it's entirety yet. I just hearted it because I think with the amount of work you put into it, you deserve more likes than what you have received thus far. Thank you for your input.
Just thought I would let anyone know, in case anyone in rhe comments did not buy the game, that i just bought it and so far am really enjoying it. The review is spot on. It really is a mix of Castlevania and Shinobi, but not so much Contra. The Shinobi influence is huge. The game really feels like an authentic Neo Geo era arcade game. As a fan of the Dracula aesthetic and as a huge fan of the original Shinobi, this game is hitting all the right notes. To be fair though I am only about an hour in. The game is challenging and I am not good at games. It takes me a while to beat them. I am on the first level boss.
@solarstriker Remake, perhaps. Remaster, nah. ALTTP has aged too well and Is available on the SNES classic edition and the SNES Nintendo Switch app. Without a remaster or remake, it is still perfectly aporoachable and is one of the greatest ten video games of all time according to the general concensus.
Too many hollow knight clones coming out in the near future to keep track of. Have to read reviews before buying any, especially after Gleamlight. Will be interesting to see how they compare to Silksong.
@Kevember I agree about mumble rap. Have you ever heard the world's greatest rap, though? If you are not interested in hearing it due to any sort of closed mindedness, I will not yell you who the artists are. But if you are interested, I will. It is far from mainstream, so unless you are an underground hip hop officianado like me, you probably won't know that good rap even exists, let alone the best.
@tadams587 And just to expand on my earlier response, the games run fine in both handheld and docked. There are absolutely no issues. Don't listen to this review. You can safely spend the money. It's worth it just for the first two games. I archived the third.
I know I've already said this several times in this thread, but Nintendo Life is just absolutely full of crap in this review. I almost always can rely on this website for accurate reviews of Switch games, but not this time. These games are performing flawlessly. So don't listen to this review, and I seriously hope whoever is responsible for this misinformation gets found out, and the review gets fixed, because that is just wrong.
@tadams587 The first and second game perform and look great. The third game is a mess, but I assume that is just how it always was. It seems to look and perform as desired. I am trying to understand how my beloved Nintendo Life could have released an innacurate review for this collection.
You're right, and I was mislead. The whole trilogy was listed incorrectly at 3.8 gigs. This still doesn't solve the mystery of this terrible Nintendo Life review, which seems to be innacurate, as the games run fine for me.

@RiasGremory RGT85 seems like a total jackass. I realized after watching him for years that I was tired of him. he just doesn't seem like a nice person in real life and he has never responded to me. most other YouTubers have talked with me.
Re: Review: No More Heroes III - A Swaggering Joke Of A Game That Suda51 Fans Will Love
you work for them? because I don't wanna go down that road if you do.
Re: Review: No More Heroes III - A Swaggering Joke Of A Game That Suda51 Fans Will Love
So...... anyone going out and paying 60 bucks for this game should definitely check out RGT85's video on it beforehand.
Re: Trigger Witch Shuns Magic For Guns, Aims For Switch This Summer
Re: Review: Blaster Master Zero 2 - Pure, Retro Platforming Goodness At Its Finest
Re: Review: Blaster Master Zero 2 - Pure, Retro Platforming Goodness At Its Finest
@Phostachio Have you beaten Cuphead yet?
Re: Review: Blaster Master Zero 2 - Pure, Retro Platforming Goodness At Its Finest
@Mopati I agree. For the most part I respect Nintendo Life, but they do get IGN level sloppy on occasion.
Re: Review: Blaster Master Zero 2 - Pure, Retro Platforming Goodness At Its Finest
@the8thark I have not even read your "article" in it's entirety yet. I just hearted it because I think with the amount of work you put into it, you deserve more likes than what you have received thus far. Thank you for your input.
Re: Review: Blaster Master Zero 2 - Pure, Retro Platforming Goodness At Its Finest
@Onion Mind letting us know your thoughts on Blaster Master Zero 3 once you have played it? Meaning how does it compare to the first two.
Re: Review: Blaster Master Zero 2 - Pure, Retro Platforming Goodness At Its Finest
@Expa0 Mind letting us know your thoughts on the third game? In a week or two I mean.
Re: Gorgeous Gothic Metroidvania The Last Faith Is Bound For Switch
@minnow17 Dirty, Dreamstar, Minnow and Optoet-whoever, quit posting off topic. This ain't the place for that bs.

@Axelay71 Why do reference Slain and Valfaris when they are not metroidvanias?
Re: Review: Wallachia: Reign Of Dracula - Contra Meets Castlevania In This Excellent Action Title
Re: Review: Wallachia: Reign Of Dracula - Contra Meets Castlevania In This Excellent Action Title
@RupeeClock I noticed that too. I am Error.
Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Soars Straight To Number One
@solarstriker Remake, perhaps. Remaster, nah. ALTTP has aged too well and Is available on the SNES classic edition and the SNES Nintendo Switch app. Without a remaster or remake, it is still perfectly aporoachable and is one of the greatest ten video games of all time according to the general concensus.
Re: Oh, Bird: Check Out Crowsworn, A Bloodborne-y Metroidvania That's A Hit On Kickstarter
Too many hollow knight clones coming out in the near future to keep track of. Have to read reviews before buying any, especially after Gleamlight. Will be interesting to see how they compare to Silksong.
Re: Review: Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights - A Metroidvania With A Stunning World To Discover
Re: Review: Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection - Ryu Hayabusa Deserves Better Than This
@tadams587 And just to expand on my earlier response, the games run fine in both handheld and docked. There are absolutely no issues. Don't listen to this review. You can safely spend the money. It's worth it just for the first two games. I archived the third.
Re: Review: Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection - Ryu Hayabusa Deserves Better Than This
I know I've already said this several times in this thread, but Nintendo Life is just absolutely full of crap in this review. I almost always can rely on this website for accurate reviews of Switch games, but not this time. These games are performing flawlessly. So don't listen to this review, and I seriously hope whoever is responsible for this misinformation gets found out, and the review gets fixed, because that is just wrong.
Re: Review: Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection - Ryu Hayabusa Deserves Better Than This
@tadams587 The first and second game perform and look great. The third game is a mess, but I assume that is just how it always was. It seems to look and perform as desired. I am trying to understand how my beloved Nintendo Life could have released an innacurate review for this collection.
Re: Review: Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection - Ryu Hayabusa Deserves Better Than This
You're right, and I was mislead. The whole trilogy was listed incorrectly at 3.8 gigs. This still doesn't solve the mystery of this terrible Nintendo Life review, which seems to be innacurate, as the games run fine for me.
