SNES classic Actraiser has been remastered for Nintendo Switch in the form of Actraiser Renaissance, which launches on the Switch later today.
The game updates the original 16-bit Enix / Quintet title, which was unique in mixing platforming action sections with Populous-style city-building segments. The gameplay remains largely the same, but benefits from a 2.5D visual upgrade.
Yuzo Koshiro's legendary soundtrack will also get an upgrade thanks to a special re-arranged version by the great man himself, but you'll be able to toggle between this and the original soundtrack at will. New bosses and levels are also promised by Square Enix, as well as quick-save and auto-save features and an 'enhanced game system'.
Actraiser Renaissance is also available on PS4, Steam, iOS and Android.

Whelp that was my pick of the Direct.
This totally came out of the left field and made the direct for me.
I had no idea squeenix even knew this series existed anymore.
No clue about this game, trailer looked interesting though. I think I will pick this one up.
Great pick for a remake! 😄
Remember playing this on the super famicom and got stuck on a section where you had to give a local something. Amazing soundtrack by the legend Yuzo Koshiro.
Hopefully it has enough new content.
Super excited for this one!
Best part of the direct! Absolutely loved this game as a kid, will buy as soon as it goes up!!
This interested me more than most of the direct. Never heard of it but looks very fun. I'll probably get it.
So unexpected and so welcomed. Best in show, hands down. Saved the whole direct.
Just wow.
I was like. Wutttttt. 2 games I have to buy later today now.
Awesome thanks for giving the real snes fans from the 90s this game
best surprise of the direct. definitly getting this one
I'd prefere Actraiser 3. This looks like a cheap flash game. I love Actraiser. I hope this is a game worthy of Quintet and not a quick cash grab.
Generic 2.5D visuals. What is this a HD version of a cancelled PSP version? ♡
This looks awful.
Yeap this save the Direct for me, will be playing this during the weekend along with the Castlevania Advance Collection.
Looks interesting but not a priority for me. Maybe as a gift from someone or a spontaneous buy… Still, never heard of this title and the premise is kinda interesting. Maybe even deep))
Yuzo Koshiro (composer of the original Actraiser) confirmed that he arranged the music for this game too, again. I'm glad he has been able to go back and make something hes touched on.
Overall a great Direct and Actraiser was the biggest surprise. Here's hoping they remade Blood Pool and its moon.
I got so hyped when I saw the statue, then it just went rapidly downhill from there..
Act Raiser is one of my favourite games, but..
I was literally just thinking about the possibility of this!!!! What a great surprise
That trailer was rough...
Me and probably 10 other people are dancing in the streets. YAY, ACTRAISER! THEY REMEMBER IT EXISTS!
the game is super good but hell does this remake looks bad and cheap
God is real once a year and today was his day.
I have to take back everything I said about SquareEnix forgetting the Enix part of their name. Totally forgiven. Absolutely overjoyed by this! (Hope there is a physical version). And if you grew up playing Megadrive...get on this. It's a classic.
For the love of all that is holy, bring back RoboTrek too
Never played the original, so I may check this out in the future.
Oh wow, so Quintet isn't dead and SE has been sitting on it the whole time. Now that the secret's out, Terranigma please
Instant purchase for me. Such a great game.
SO that means ALL THE QUINTET GAMES soon, RIGHT?
@Clarice definitely won't happen now that they remastered it. Unless it sells crazy good, then it'd still be 3+ years away.
Remasters are meh. Put it on the SNES online & do a remake. We have enough ancient looking & playing games in the current generation.🤦🏻♂️
I barely played the original, but liked what I did, and ohhh that Koshiro music!
Please print a cartridge of this remake and we’ll talk then.
Master, I know this is unexpected, but ActRaiser is being remade for Switch and it's the highlight of the Direct for some! (Me.)
Can't wait for this. Hope it gets a box release.
As soon as this was announced, I was pressing F on NIntendo.com waiting for it be released. I don't care if the graphics aren't that great(neither were the original's TBH) as long as the game is fun to play(which it was). Also I got a code for wallpaper and BGM. RAD!
Was hype when I heard this was announced but not feeling the new graphics at all. The animations look awful and city builder view is too busy. This would be an instant purchase regardless if it included the original, but now, I'll wait for some reviews.
I liked the original back in the day, not sure about this version though. And most of what the trailer showed was the platforming I didn’t care about as much anyway. Fingers crossed.
C'mon Square Enix...let's get Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma remastered too...get 7th Saga with different difficulty levels too!
Actraiser?
Remade?
Out Now?!
With new bosses and levels?
...I need to finish the original.
I put 40 minutes into it. It's good. Action sequences haven't changed all that much, but then, they didn't need to. The town portions have been significantly beefed up, including tower defense sections and little mini action levels.
One of the most interesting games in the show. I'll get it eventually as I've heard so much about it and never played it before.
I loved actraiser as a child and played/ beat multiple times and honestly it was most exciting thing for me in this direct aside from bayonets 3 footage! I’m downloading it now and can’t wait write a review about it! Casltevania can wait because darn Actraiser was good and can’t wait try new parts out! Great direct though
@KiraMoonvalley All day every day I tell you what.
Day 1 buy for me 😀
Castlevania collection or Actraiser. Hmmm 🤔. I know Castlevania will go on sale. Choices.
I've been dying for this game to hit Switch ever since we got the SNES library with Nintendo Online. A fully rebuilt remaster? They could have shown nothing else and the direct still would have blown me away. I've already finished Fillmore. Can't wait to play more tomorrow. It's everything I loved about the SNES game but better and there's more. I still can't believe this is real.
I was a little hesitant about the graphics but honestly they’ve grown on me, same scrappy spirit of the original. And, the gameplay & music is excellent. It feels just like the original game but modern and more fleshed out. Seriously though, the main Fillmore music has been popping in and out of my head since I was a kid. Hearing it again like this was pretty rad.<3
YYYYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Hopefully this can drum up enough interest for a legit sequel!
Huge surprise. I don't like the flash-ish look but oh well. Maybe there's hope for the Gaia Trilogy yet (specifically Terranigma)...
Woke up to some harsh critisism for this game. Have they messed it up?
FOR THE LOVE OF THE MASTER, TURN OFF THE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS. You'll get a decent frame rate then.
I'm liking it so far!
Thought this looked rather good but then again ive got no nostalgia for the origional and can see why fans dont like it. I feel the same whenever i see the plastic toy soldiers look of the new advance wars.
I've been trying to get the SNES version for a while (for a good price) but while this looks like a good remake, I'm still going hunt for the original.
Not going to lie, I kind of prefer the original's graphics. These are just... they look odd... Seems to happen a lot with 2D remasters.
Still, for the right price, I might bite.
Eshop only or will there be a physical version?
Love this game, a true classic, but man, those visuals are rough. This just makes me want to play the original.
Whaat, this is out now!? I love the original, but I'm not sure how I feel about these new visuals. Still I may give it a look.
IGN ranked ActRaiser the 19th best SNES game.
No review yet. This is probably to help rhe big N sell as many digital copies as they can before the reviews come out and people realize that Smelter is better. For those of you who do not know, Smelter is a masterpiece that launched earlier this year and is the spiritual successor to Actraiser.
