Re: Review: Metroid Prime (GameCube)

I loved this game, but got tired of the lock-on system, which I found annoying, before I took the time to finish it. I should buy a copy of the Wii compilation sometime.

I do not feel tempted to buy it before 12 August. The games on that list are ones I am either not interested in or ones I already own on other systems.

I am interested in picking one up next month, though. It's mostly because of the legacy of Nintendo handhelds. I loved the DS and the various Game Boy systems before it. I was actually waiting to buy one at the first price drop, but I didn't expect it to come this soon.

What concerns me about 3DS, though, is that the 3D will turn out to be not much more than a gimmick. The DS and the Wii introduced engaging new ways of playing games and would sometimes even make the gap between player and game feel a lot smaller. I think it's a really cool effect, but it didn't bring up any ideas in my mind immediately on how it could be put to use. With the DS and Wii, I immediately saw the potential and how developers could apply it. I think that's why those two systems were so phenomenally succesful.

I do not see that same amount of potential in the 3D effects on the 3DS. It kinda feels like a purely cosmetic thing. It makes the games seem more realistic and alive, but nothing that could be put into gameplay mechanics. This is because the 3DS does not introduce any new means of control, like the Wii and DS did, rendering most of the innovations purely cosmetic. I admit I really like the AR and how 3D works really well in making it feel even more realistic, but it doesn't actually rely on 3D. It makes it look a lot cooler, but nothing else.

The 3DS is more of an evolution, rather than a revolution like its predecessor was. Nintendo will have to proof the 3DS is more than just a next-gen DS when you turn the 3D off.

Re: Review: 3D Pixel Racing (WiiWare)

Too bad, I really was enchanted by the visual presentation.

Speaking of which, it couldbe very suitable for a LEGO-style racer where you build the cars and tracks yourself in a Minecraft-like setting. Now THAT would be cool.

Re: Wii U is Technically 3D-Ready

Rensch

Tachnically, all you need is developers that implement a 3D mode and costumers owning 3D TV's. In a sense the Wii is technically 3D-capable.

It depends on developers entirely. Particularly PS3 developers are busy with 3D even though the hardware wasn't initially made with 3D in mind.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)

The best game ever back then, still the best game ever now and even better than ever. Life is good. No matter how many times I've played through this game, it always brings joy and enchantment. Magnificent in any possible way. What makes this game so special is not just that every detail and little gameplay element is executed tremendously well, but also the fact that they all blend together seamlessly!

Re: Features: A View from Hyrule Field

Still as great a coming-of-age fantasy epic as it ever was. What makes Ocarina of Time so special is not just the fact that all the individual elements, even the tiniest, least important ones, are executed so well, but also the way they blend together seamlessly.

Re: Cave Story 3D

Looks pretty cool... but in a remake I like it when it still looks familiar without making it look archaic. This is just a complete overhaul.

What appealed to me in the original were the simple-yet-charming sprite graphics. That's all gone here.

Re: Talking Point: Should Nintendo Have Made the 3DS Download-only?

Rensch

I don't think technology is far enough to make a game like OoT easy and quick enough to download, without the unit becoming very expensive. You cannot compare such games with a simple-yet-fun title like Angry Birds.

But, and I am sorry if I'm one of those green eco-whiners, I really hope to see downloads becoming the only way to get new games within a few years. It will save manufacturing and packaging costs, and there won't be any need to cut down anymore trees. Cheaper for manufacturers, costumers and better for the planet.
