@Harmonie if you don't mind me asking, what new games did you play in 2022? I personally felt like it was their worst year so far (I played x3 which was ok I guess, sparks of hope which wasn't as good as the original but still fun, arceus that was fun until the awful grind at the end, scarlet and violet which I hated, and Splatoon 3 which didn't seem as fun as the 2nd game). Everyone has different tastes, of course, but I was wondering if I'd missed anything truly great.
I honestly think I'd dislike these games even more if they were polished. I've only put about 10 hours into violet so far, but I haven't really enjoyed the experience yet. The bugs/glitches in this game have been one of the only things in this game that I have liked so far, often because of how surprising it can be.
Unless you only buy digital, I dont really see why it matters if Nintendo games stay near enough full price. I suppose it all depends on how people perceive value... but for me, keeping the games near full price allows me to resell anything that I do not like, or will not play again - for near enough the amount I paid for it.
When xenoblade chronicles 2 came out here in New Zealand, I paid $110 NZD for it. I tried several times to get enjoyment out of the game (leaving it and coming back) and eventually decided that whilst I liked the voice acting and the visuals, I really didn't like the gameplay. Eventually (a little over 6 months later) I sold the game and got $105 NZD for it.
Easily my favourite Mario game ever made. For years I've been saying I enjoy Mario sunshine more than 64 or galaxy, and since the all stars pack came out - I have only grown in my beliefs that it is the best out there. Reading the comment section, I'm surprised to find that I'm part of the minority of players that actually loved using FLUDD, despite it not being perfect - in part because it is so different, and imo mostly fun to use, and partly because it makes the game far more forgiving.
Galaxy was a let down for me when it first came out, it has a few great locations - but is just lacking something that makes it special for me (I have grown it on since it first came out, but it's still missing something). Galaxy 2 was a game I hated, although I'd happily give it another go if it comes to switch.
I rarely side with others for the most enjoyable games in a series, but I think that's the great thing about games (really is something for everyone, and places like this allow for compare/contrast for differing perspectives).
I still haven't upgraded, although their expansion is getting better (still isn't quite there for me yet). Although it's a fairly steep price increase, I'm glad they went this way - giving plenty of room to expand, rather than going up a little bit and eventually increasing the price anyways.
If they had brought out the entire mk8 DLC, instead of drip feeding it, I would have jumped on board already - I think it would take something very interesting to make me upgrade before then though (maybe a large DLC pack for new pokemon snap, maybe conkers bad fur day, or even GBC games - not really interested in gba ones).
There's still a lot of potential for their online service, and the fact that they've pumped so much money into it kind of reassures me that it will eventually be worth the price - but I guess it all depends on what they do next.
Pokemon Snap. I was really happy they released this new version, but even after completing it 100% (including the new levels they gave us) - I was still left wanting more.
Had mine from day one (I would like to get a new one with better battery life, but it's honestly not a big deal for me), and in all honesty, it's held up incredibly well.
I used to sleep with my switch next to me, but one night I somehow managed to throw a bunch of my stuff across the room in my sleep (including the switch). Since then, the joycons deteriorated and I have purchased new ones - no issues with the new ones, and I feel like the only reason the old ones started having issues were because I threw it.
Never had any cracking, although I probably should replace the old screen protector, honestly works as well as it did day 1 - couldn't be happier with it.
@Ocaz my original ones only just started to drift and I've owned the switch since it came out, I've also thrown it once in my sleep - think it's just luck of the draw really
@HenHiro I don't agree with that statement. In my experience, the xbox 360 wireless controllers were by far the worst controllers I've ever had the misfortune of buying. Drifting, having to tape the back on them to prevent disconnecting every time it rumbled, and issues with some of the triggers really put me off buying another xbox. I think in the end I went through 6 or 7 controllers before switching to some cheaper wired afterglow ones (which annoyingly worked perfectly).
I've changed my mind on this subscription expansion a few times now - initially I thought it was pretty bad value for money, but I actually think it's fairly reasonable now.
I already own an n64 with all the games they're offering, so I won't be getting the expansion at this point in time. Having said all that, if you think about the cost per year and break it down - it's still cheap. The other main thing that people seem to be forgetting, is that Nintendo are almost certainly going to be putting more of these games on the subscription, so, as time goes on, it should eventually be great value for money (obviously if you don't care about those games don't get it - but for those of us who do, it's interesting to see what they add next).
The one real downside of the subscription that I've heard is the bugs/glitches in some of the games and apparently the lag is still bad for some games, hopefully they patch all that soon - but who knows.
I can understand the price increase, Nintendo doesn't own the rights to these games and will undoubtedly have to pay to use them. Having said that, this is currently a terrible deal if you already have the older games on your n64 or whatever. If they were to throw in Banjo tooie and conkers bad fur day (maybe chuck in forza horizons as well), I think I'd jump on this. Still, if you're sharing with family, perhaps it isn't too bad.
I'm genuinely surprised some people consider this to be an issue. I could be in the minority here, but pre installed protection is always a plus in my books. I'm considering buying one of these to replace my original switch, and with dogs and children in the house, it seems like a good way to prevent anyone getting injured in case of an accident. If I do go with this (or wait for the next iteration), would be putting a tempered glass protector on anyways - I'm accident prone as is 🤣
I feel like the dark mode is for the same people that like it on their phones. Personally, I've never been a fan of dark mode - I know plenty of people that use it though, and they say it hurts their eyes when they switch back to regular. Always wondered whether or not people genuinely like dark mode though, or if they just need to turn down the brightness to a setting that suits them better.
Was a fan of sonic back in the day, so might pick this up. Really hated a lot of the newer games - but, by the sounds of things, this could be pretty good.
@Tipehtfomottob from what I understand they're looking to expand on this at some point with a Donkey Kong area etc. I can't say for sure if that's actually true or not, but I think I read that a while back - you might be able to find out some more with a quick Google, not sure.
Amazed people are still pissy, I am guessing they never played Black/White, X/Y, the abomination that was US/UM, or pretty much any remakes. As far as remakes go, HG/SS were easily the best, although the end game grind was awful. I'd toss up between S/S and Gold/Silver/Crystal for my favourite mainline Pokemon games. Having said all that, no game is perfect and I'm still glad I have played them all. When it comes down to the DLC, maybe they should have added in all the Pokemon but I think I actually prefer them going down this DLC route than creating a whole new game in the same area, just a second variant (US/UM) as it just becomes replaying the same thing for a small addition.
A little unrelated but I think the new Pokemon Snap looks amazing and I can't wait for it to come out, hopefully people don't decide to moan for years about that too.
I played 6 games on this list and enjoyed most of them, although I don't agree with their rankings. I would add Pikmin 3 to the list, as I ended up enjoying it more than I had expected to. I am also a little surprised by the amount of love Hades and Animal Crossing received - I really wanted to like both of them (especially Hades as it looked awesome) but ended up disappointed (just did not get on well with the game). Regardless, it's interesting to see what other people enjoy playing and has given me a couple of games to look into buying.
Loved them, were even more enjoyable than I was expecting. The DLC was a lot of fun as well, and I was really glad they went that route instead of makong another extended game abomination like Ultra Sun/ Ultra Moon (games that almost made me give up on the series altogether).
I have a couple of minor issues with the game but they are easily some of my favourite Main Pokemon games to date - alongside the original Gold/Silver/Crystal.
Would be nice to see some of the older pokemon games on switch, although I doubt that will happen. The original Gold/Silver/Crystal games were some of my all time favourites, although I didn't find HG/SS to be as fun (due to the end game grind).
Personally I found Sword and Shield to be some of the best Pokemon games to date, but I think it would be great if they introduced an additional DLC for it so that we could travel between several full on regions like they did in those earlier games (I have always hoped they would make a game that allows you to travel to each region, although I really don't think they would ever do that).
Wasn't really a fan of Black and White, although B2/W2 were great. I don't personally feel a need to play in this region again (as a standalone). I find it a little ironic that people like to hate so much on Sword/Shield when B/W were basically half finished games. (The difference being one game created a sequel the other brought in DLC - pretty much the same thing though)
Having said all this, B/W 2 were the only remakes (if you want to call them that) that I thought were truly great, didn't care for HG/SS as an example (although the originals are perhaps my favourites out of all mainline pokemon games to date). US/UM almost killed mainline pokemon for me, and I can't honestly say that I have any interest in any more remakes or sequels.
Having said all that, I'd love to have more mainline games where you can travel between several regions, and, if they decided to go down that route, I believe they could make the best pokemon games so far.
I think people have more issues with the difficulty, in parts, of the game rather than any glitches. I've always enjoyed sunshine - can say it's by far my favourite mario game out there. I can see why people struggle with it, never really understood the hate though. I also find it interesting how highly praised galaxy is, whilst galaxy and 2 are good in their own rights, I always hated the controls of them - I still feel that way. Having said all that it would be pretty boring if we all enjoyed the same things.
As for the people crying and telling others to retire - games are really made for everyone and no one at the same time... what I mean by this is that their design is based around something they think people are going to generally like - at the same time they're not trying to cater to any particular person.
There's nothing at all wrong with disliking something, trying to get someone to stop because you didn't have the experience you wanted is pretty ridiculous though.
@C-Daddy I think your analysis of sunshine is a little harsh - I own all 3 games and would say Galaxy was easily the most chore-like one for me. Each game is excellent, in its own right, but they also have annoying little things - example falling through the walls/floors. Even so I would take sunshine over the other 2 any day. Looking forward to playing all 3 on Switch anyways - been hoping for them to release on here for a while now.
Pretty stoked on this, I have all the older systems so I can play these regardless, looking forward to playing on the switch. Although it's probably an extremely unpopular opinion, Super Mario Sunshine is by far my favourite Mario game to date, followed by 64 and I look forward to seeing how it goes on switch.
I actually like this game a fair bit on ps4, the combat isn't exactly complex, but it does provide a decent amount of mindless entertainment. It's a shame they didn't take the opportunity to add some additional modes - in particular things for local multiplayer (minigames and the like) - as I think it could have really elevated this game, and made it a little more appealing for the average player.
@Kalmaro As I have already stated - people are allowed to dislike something, and I don't in any way think people should avoid voicing complaints. My issues stem from the fact that the same people have been complaining about issues they had with the game/s since November. Accepting things and then letting them go is a big part of life, and if people can't do that - they're setting themselves up for disappointment down the line.
I followed the news about pokemon fairly closely, so i'm well aware of the misrepresentations - and as I said there are things that could be changed. That does not mean that I have to dislike the game, nor does it mean someone else has to accept it. I understand that some long term fans might feel betrayed (although, I am unsure that's the correct way to put it), but so many people, like me, have played since gen 1 and still had a great time, despite the innapropriate mis-selling of the game/s.
I will reiterate, the same people that have complained about it from day one, and still continue to do so every opportunity they get, really need to accept things for what they are.
My last few points are(also part summary): I agree, lying when you're selling a product is unacceptable, but at the end of the day it's just a game and it isn't worth getting so worked up about. I fully understand issues people have, but to keep at it after so many months doesn't really have any benefit. What it does do is rile up the people that didn't get what they wanted, and it also comes off as a little whiny to those that liked the games. More than anything, it's somewhat draining for people that just want to read comments about the thoughts of other people on other games - perhaps exarcerbated by the current global situation.... regardless it kind of kills the mood for some people. Final point - sorry if this doesn't fully demonstrate my feelings towards everything (I won't be going into detail about my personal life, but I have a learning disability called dyspraxia - and part of that means that I find it very difficult to convey feelings/ explain anything). Sorry if this message has come off as condescending in any way, it isn't my intention - but I have spent over an hour trying to put this all down in a way that (I feel) makes sense.
Please don't be offended if you respond and I don't message back - this was a more of a timesink than I initially expected, and I don't think I can convey it any better, even with more time.
@Rodan2000 I would try to ignore them, if you can, people are just entitled - they like to act as if minor things have personally been done to upset them. I loved sword/shield, they were my favourite main pokemon games since gold/silver (and whilst I feel a few things could have been improved upon, I thought they looked great + were a lot of fun).
On the plus side, just about everyone has wanted a new pokemon snap game for years (and imo this looks like it has a tonne of potential to be excellent), so hopefully people will accept they had niggles about the main games, get over it, and focus their attention on the exciting future.
(Just wanted to add for anyone reading, I completely understand people being disappointed with a game - I have been excited for plenty of games, which turned out, weren't for me... having said that, the carry on is a little bit much).
@BenAV Thankyou for responding, I think it's pretty rare for people to say they dislike the game and give their genuine feelings regarding that, instead of taking the route of saying something sucks because they didn't like it (an example for me could be: I loved the voice acting and visuals of XenobladeChronicles 2 but hated the gameplay, I can admit it was probably a pretty good game, but it wasn't for me) so your response was pretty interesting to me.
Pokemon for me is something that is forever changing, but always pretty similar. What I mean by that is there isn't really a unique story, you start out in the same sort of manner, and apart from the main goal of defeating the key rivals (including general rival/s, gyms, the villainous team, elite 4 etc.) to beat the game and become champion, it's really just about exploring and playing your own way.
The region for me was probably the best in a long time, (in my opinion) everything looked fantastic, especially the cities and scenery, although in places they definitely could have (and should have) expanded (the fairy area was a slight let down for me because it lacked size and variety, although I found it very visually interesting).
One of points you made (that I found particularly interesting) was the music, oddly enough I didn't really pay all that much attention to that during playthroughs (I don't think their music has ever reached the heights of their kanto/johto stuff in any other of their games though), but thinking about it now, I found it reminded me a lot of the music in Black and White.
Have to agree with you 100% on the whole dynamaxing thing. Whilst I like how it looks, I don't care for it at all. Dynamaxing is probably a step up from mega evolving, however it's not something I can really appreciate.
As you say, difficulty in pokemon isn't all that high, I set myself restrictions in each game (makes it a lot harder and, for me, a lot more fun). I understand when you talk about playing these games for most of your life, it's the same for me.
I find it incredibly hard to believe that it was the worst game you played all year, as it's so fundamentally similar to most of the other main games that I would hazard a guess that you may have outgrown the games, rather than disliking for this one as much as you do. Having said all this, the world would be an incredibly boring place if everyone liked the same things.
You might like a game called temtem, I wasn't a fan, but I know that a few people that didn't enjoy pokemon much really liked it.
Again thank you for responding, sorry if I've come off as condescending in any way (I don't believe my opinions are in any way more valid than yours), I just really found it fascinating to look at our opposing views and compare them. Take it easy
@BenAV I couldnt disagree more. I found sword/shield to be the best pokemon games since gold/silver/crystal. For me ultra sun/ultra moon were by far the worst.
Honestly I like most things about the game, although I have a couple of minor issues with it (ridiculous things like their inconsistencies with english - American/British). I've been playing since red/blue and played most games, including all spin offs. What didn't you like about the game?
@EvaEeveeFan Sounds like you really need to grow up a little bit. Leaving a union doesn't mean leaving Europe.... Hopefully you leave though, one less idiot hanging around.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Super Mario 3D All-Stars On Nintendo Switch
Pretty stoked on this, I have all the older systems so I can play these regardless, looking forward to playing on the switch. Although it's probably an extremely unpopular opinion, Super Mario Sunshine is by far my favourite Mario game to date, followed by 64 and I look forward to seeing how it goes on switch.
Re: Review: Jump Force Deluxe Edition - A Textbook Example Of Style Over Substance
Re: Why Does The New Pokémon Snap Game On Nintendo Switch Look So Stunning?
@Kalmaro
As I have already stated - people are allowed to dislike something, and I don't in any way think people should avoid voicing complaints.
My last few points are(also part summary):
I agree, lying when you're selling a product is unacceptable, but at the end of the day it's just a game and it isn't worth getting so worked up about.
Re: Why Does The New Pokémon Snap Game On Nintendo Switch Look So Stunning?
Re: The Pokémon Company Threatens To "Permanently Ban" Players Who Deliberately Disconnect From Battles
Re: The Pokémon Company Threatens To "Permanently Ban" Players Who Deliberately Disconnect From Battles
Re: Link's Awakening Sold More Than 430,000 Copies Across Europe In Its First Three Days
@EvaEeveeFan Sounds like you really need to grow up a little bit. Leaving a union doesn't mean leaving Europe.... Hopefully you leave though, one less idiot hanging around.
