@Ghost_of_Hasashi This is definitely a 16 bit inspired game. The NES wouldn't come close to being able to pull this off. The color palette, the number of sprites, the number of hardware sprites per line. This looks like just a SNES game to me.
My friends and I managed to get a copy of Mass Effect 3 a few weeks before it's release. It shall we say... fell off the back of a truck.
It was hilariously buggy clearly waiting for pre-launch patching. One of the characters fell half way through the floor and continued delivering their dialog while walking around at waist height.
This is right up there with the PS2 Horizontal Stand if anyone remembers that. There was a vertical stand for the PS2 to help it stand upright without tipping over, but they also released a horizontal stand for it to help it... sit the way it already sat lol.
I still have several working NES systems, but if they made new ones I would absolutely go out and buy one. It would be awesome to see the NES scene revitalized and see new releases coming out from larger publishers.
The original systems are dying slow deaths as their components slowly die. The first NES that I got for christmas as a kid no longer boots probably due to bad capacitors.
"For example, advances in flash media mean that it's now possible to fit 32GB of storage on such cards."
... in cards that size you can easily fit 256GB of flash memory, that density will only increase over the course of the systems life. The real question is what is the maximum addressable size of flash memory and i'm guessing that it's probably north of a Terrabyte.
I'm all for 3d remakes of black box game, but this is among the worst of those titles. Regular Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, or Golf would be awesome ones to start with. Hogan's alley, Wild gunman and Pro wrestling might work out pretty well too.

Re: Sonic Colors: Ultimate Will Be A Friendly Game For Beginners
After the main genesis games the only games released in the series worth playing were the sonic adventure games and sonic mania.

Ben Heck did it 16 years ago in 2005. Albeit not quite as compact.
