Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?

Matt_Barber

One the one hand you can argue that Shovel Knight isn't retro, because it isn't that old.

On the other, you could argue that it always was. Even on the day it launched, it was evoking the style of an earlier period.

The word gets used both ways, so it's probably best to deal with that rather than attempt to gatekeep one way or the other.

Re: Bayonetta Origins Director Empathises With Paper Mario Dev, Suggests Reasons For 30FPS

Matt_Barber

I'm a PC gamer who regularly plays games at 120fps where appropriate and who generally avoids buying twitchy games for the Switch, where it can't deliver that. I've got no problem buying 30fps RPGs on Switch though, because they don't need that level of performance.

At the end of the day, we're talking about hardware that's based around a mobile SoC from 2015. If you want 60fps for everything that's going to require visual trade-offs for games where it makes no sense at all.

And sure, the original TTYD ran at 60fps, but this is not that game. It's a ground-up remake of it, with a radically enhanced visual style.

Re: Round Up: The Previews Are In For Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Switch)

@bobrocks95 It's exactly how it works. It takes two fields to make a frame, so 60 fields per second means 30 frames per second.

If you want to get 60fps out of a 480i TV set, the only way you're doing it is by rendering it at 240p, which some older consoles do, but not the GameCube.

Edit: There's obviously nothing to stop a game from rendering at 60FPS, but the TV set just doesn't have the bandwidth to display that many full frames.

Re: Switch Emulator Yuzu To Pay $2.4 Million To Nintendo & Cease Development

Matt_Barber

@the_beaver Citra just got caught in the crossfire. It's not mentioned at all in the lawsuit and obviously was neither here nor there when it came to the piracy of TotK. Most likely, they had to sign a blanket agreement not to work on any Nintendo emulators.

It is, however, an open source project with other branches under active development by completely unrelated teams, so one of those might keep the project alive.

We might have to wait for the dust to settle first though, because I don't think anyone's going to be inclined to stick their head up right now.

Re: Balatro Removed From European Nintendo eShops Due To Ratings Switch

Matt_Barber

@Dm9982 Steam is unaffected because it doesn't require games to be rated.

All console platforms require a rating though, so they're required to remove the game immediately if the rating is changed or revoked.

Also, I'd bear in mind that PEGI ratings are sometimes used for other regions via the International Age Rating Coalition, so knock-on effects may cause the game to be removed from sale there too.

Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase?

Matt_Barber

I'd like to know what games Pyoro "spoiled" because all I saw from that account was a series of cryptic hints.

"is xbox a partner" = Grounded, Pentiment, NSO games

"Sometimes Nintendo can be a Partner because they love dolphins" = Endless Ocean

"Is Game Freak a partner" = Pocket Card Jockey

etc.

You'd only be able to infer the games mentioned with information from other sources, some of which weren't entirely reliable. That's why loads of other "insiders" were predicting Hi-Fi Rush from Microsoft, and Dolphin to be a reference to GameCube games.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Best Nintendo Remake Ever?

Matt_Barber

My most played re-make of the year would be Baten Kaitos, which probably isn't anyone's idea of a good one. Yet, the original games shine through and I really enjoyed them in spite of the issues.

Anyway, yeah, Link's Awakening is the greatest re-make. I'd love to see all the 2D Zelda games eventually get the same treatment.

This all takes me back to the 1990s when, if you wanted to play the latest games from Japan, you had to import them and play them in Japanese. You usually didn't get English subtitles either.

As a veteran from that era, I can say that the language barrier is a lot less than you think it'll be. If the lack of a dub is the only thing holding you back, take a chance on it. I honestly don't think you'll regret it.

Re: Review: Baldo: The Guardian Owls - Exquisite Ghibli-Esque Art Can't Hide Tortuous Gameplay

Matt_Barber

Games Machine gave it an 86, while acknowledging the bugs and clunky mechanics, so there's one positive review from a somewhat reputable outlet.

I think it's just going to go down as one of those games where it's both a labour of love that some players are going to feel totally enchanted by, and will be spurred to put in the effort to work around its issue, but also an unplayable mess for many others. Both perspectives are valid, but it's hard to sum them up in a single score.

Although I managed to get a fair way into it, I think I'll be putting it on the back burner for a while. There are presumably many more patches to come and it'll be more fun when there's a guide to fall back on rather than just having to live with getting stuck.
