What about these with friends not so close? Nintendo goes from one stupidity to another even bigger stupidity in a forever loop. They should just say that this way the development of NLand was way cheaper, and the profit per unit sold way bigger, that's all.
ppl expect from them only stupid decisions, and as usual Nintendo responds well to these expectations. So you can download only between 11 and 3, but then you can play the game all the day? Next is that adult games can be played also only from 11 to 3 by a software lock. But that's nintendo, I'm not surprised.
COD has never been a high demanding game for graphics, in COD (and similars) what matters is to keep the highest posible frame rate which is always critical for MP games. I think that currently the best case of study for the performance of WiiU would be ACIII. Does it work well in WiiU or does it suffer from frame rate drops, short view distance (fog) or similars?
For some reason they keep always hidding the console and promoting the controller. Many people will believe that this is just an accesory for the Wii, or even worse, a handheld like the 3DS.
From the point of view of a typical Wii owner that for some reasons wants to change to HD:
360: jump to HD and over 800 games, cheaper and with HDrive.
WiiU: jump to HD and less than 10 games, more expensive and no HDrive included.
MS (and Sony) had their hardware sales being increased while Wii sales were going down in flames for a full year now, so that MS is already capturing old Wii owners is nothing new.
the problem might be that this kind of games simply doesnt appeal to the traditional Nintendo customers. It just sold only 90K copies for 3DS with an installed based of 21M while the terrible Dungeon Hunter Alliance sold the same for Vita with an installed base of only 3M.
@TheRealThanos, the first hand info you have is null, there are NDA everywhere and you can only guess based on what you can see. You have seen previews of WiiU games, and you have seem the next game engines created for nextbox/PS4/high end PCs (Epic, SEnix) so you might have some clues there about the potential difference. My personal opinion, and that's an opition, is that Nintendo has just tried to improve in the graphics area while totally missing the CPU one. Anyway their base was set by the Wii, and certainly the WiiU should be perceived as a more than enough improvement over it. But the base for MS is the 360, and not a single 360 user will pay a $ for something that the current 360 can handle (even if downgraded), same applies to Sony. They simply cannot offer something a bit over current PS3 and expect their masses to switch to the new device, they cannot rely on gimmicky devices as they already know this doesnt work with their customers (case of Move).
@TheRealThanos: "Now, taking into account that (considering the newer and better hardware) the Wii U is FACTUALLY 1,5 - 2 times more powerful than the current gen, and the next Xbox/PS will be around 3 - 4 times more powerful than their current consoles"
Based on the solid info you have (cero), you may say also that WiiU is 10 times more powerful than current gen and that next PS will be half as powerful as PS3, or any other combination of random numbers.
The WiiU is just catching with the PS360, this is the fact. And effectively the risk to have a Wii/PS3 situation again with the PS4 is there. Nintendo must have a plan B in case this happens.
Not that I'm a friend of tables, but they are actually far better option for gaming than 3DS, and this is what Nintendo doesnt want to hear. At least Sony can still say that Vita is technically clearly superior for gaming than these, and even this might change quickly in the following 3 years.
Aha, so devices far more powerful than their Wii and with many more games are not gaming devices, right? I guess Sony should say the same about the 3DS.
Probably Sony/Vita combination is more flexible than WiiU system. In the case of Vita for cross play, the game or addon runs on the Vita, so it doesnt overload the PS3, and there is no technical limit on the number of Vitas that potentially can play together with a PS3. Now it is up to Sony to exploit it of its full or not.
For all these saying that 60€ is fine, lets see how many do you really buy at the end of the month, specially these from Nintendo which are a remake of a remake of a remake of another remake or just a bunch of minigames (oh! but now asymmetric of course). And if you are lucky, you will have ports of already existing HD games, but you will pay 60€ while the rest of users will pay 45 or less (future mass effect 2 port? Skyrim? Fallout 3? and few other hundreds of them). And 60€ means an instant bye-bye of all these millions of casuals playing Wii.
Who cares to which generation the WiiU will end belonging to, or is that we are doomed to have a single system at home? Last generational jump was PS2/XBoX to 360/PS3, is the WiiU to the PS3 what was the PS3 to the PS2? No. Should we expect the same generational jump between PS3 and PS4? Who knows. And in any case there is a major fault in the article, modern games are not more expensive becase of the power of modern system, this is a totally false urban leyend. Modern games are more expensive because for some unkown to me reason there are more and more massive investments in Hollywood like cinematics/cutscenes/voice acting, and none of these are really related to how powerfull a system is.
Bethesda always go for massive games, to be frank it was a big surprise for me having Skyrim working fine on 360 (even with low detail level). But it is clear that current gen consoles are imposing limitations to what Bethesda can do for PCs, hopefully they will find an open door to escape from performance limitations with the next gen of consoles. Give enough raw power to these guys and lets see how massive and incredible might be Elder Scrolls VI or Fallout IV.
BTW, it was no buggy for me (PC and XBoX versions), if you have the PS3 one I understand your frustration. But it was not overrated at all for me, in any case even underrated. Most really overrated and overhyped game came from Ninty, SS, yep, the one that lost the GOTY award vs Skyrim. Skyrim is absolutely massive, no way to have something like that without small issues here and there, with the exception of the PS3 version.
I guess these fanboys that cannot play Bethesda are the first to say that they dont need Bethesda. For the vast majority of non-Wii users, it is number 1 dev and publisher, and Nitendo would certainly benefict of having number 1 giving them some support, even if it is just an already chewed bone.
@Malic, they release two real jewels per year, Nintendo releases scores of mini games per year, which, obviously, dont need patches. The "buggy" Syrim was GOTY, remember that.
Nintendo fanboys are weird people, with the Wii they were saying HD is not needed, power doesnt count, Super Mario Bros is the best game ever ... But it happens that Wii is dead, and Wii U is not just a Wii HD with a tablet, but a way more powerful console, and now all of them say WOOOOW, when the rumours were pointing to having the WiiU even able to compete with next PS4720 all of them were saying TAKE THAT! And now that everybody is stating that the WiiU will just match current gen all of them are back to the "Power doesnt count" song. Nintendo knows pretty well that for all of you the only thing that counts is that the box have "Nintendo" written somewhere. The funny part is that all of you are expecting to have far better Nintendo games with the WiiU than with the Wii, and of course not thanks to the tablet, but only thanks to the extra power. Everybody else goes in the opposite direction which is always marked by PC gaming, and Nintendo already suffered 3 premature console deads with the N64, NGC and now with the Wii.
This conference looks to me as "the future of the sport" attended by a football player while the conference talks about how good would be to sportify the races riding turtles or the epic tomatoe battles. The football player will exit the conference thinking "whatever while the football keeps existing ... "
Nintendo may create software for iPads while continuing with their consoles, I dont know why that must be just one or the other. Marios dont require any special controls, and these games run with minimal hardware specs, even Galaxy ones would be running fine on an iPad. They could port "obsolete" tittles for other platforms while creating exclusives for 3DS and WiiU, and this might be also an interesting way to promote their newest hardware while selling millions in software.
Liminous is pretty impresive as well, and again, developed for PC while SEnix stated that it will work for nextbox and PS4. They are planning an scaled down version for PS3,Vita,360 and WiiU, but this is not yet confirmed as a work in progress. Anyway I doubt PC version will be that one running on Nextbox or PS4.
UE4 has been developed for PC only and with today's PC's specs in mind. If you want to use it, better you have the required power, else use UE3. I guess that scaling down UE4 to make it work on PS3/360/WiiU is a waste of time, it will affect the ported games so that the games will need to be adjusted as well.
For me KI is the most disappointing 3DS game, they did choose the wrong system while it might have been a decent game for the Wii. Anyway I put the blame on Nintendo, not on the devs of the game.
@Emaan "The industry needs variety, and Nintendo seems to be the only one that goes with a different direction" ... and still being Nintendo the one with less game variety between the three. Hope the new controller will not cause just a big explosion of lots of shovelware worthless variety as did happen with the Wii, and as it is actually happening with Kinect or Move.
@Assassinated , so what is cheaper for a developper? Create its uber game for PC (as all of them aready do), and then move it almost directly to a windows 8 XBoX or create it initially for WiiU and then try to port it to PC/NextBox? Because at the moment all are ports from PC to XBoX/PS3 (except platform exclusives).
Neram, what you call "graphics" will never get a point of no room for improvement. Reading your coments you will hardly understand that, you just need to wait 20 years more. Do you know what is the power required for a F1 simulator (Mclaren) without even considering the graphic rendering? But if you want to focus on graphics, you might look for a film named Beowulf (animation), and try to figure out how many PS3 in parallel would be needed to have something like that in a game.
Every time Iwata opens his mouth Nintendo shareholders get in panic. The WiiU is not even out and you have Nintendo in defensive and giving excuses. If power is not important, then why Nintendo is trying to catch up with the others, and why the others will try to catch up with PC? Two years ago you have the fanboys saying nobody needs HD, now all of them are allucinating after watching an HD Zelda demo, and 10 years later it will happen the same. You guys should keep playing SNES forever.
Might be the problem is that devs know pretty well that users interested on these games live as far away as possible from Nintendo, and that typical Nintendo users will not care at all about them.
Vita will hardly take off in Japan, most of the dev companies working for Sony are seated in UE or USA and I doubt they will aim at all at that market.
This is exactly what they should had released since the very beginning instead of the nano screen version, with a second stick. Now for all cross platform games I get the Vita big screen version, XL is too tale for me.
Problem is that all Nintendo fanboys simply cannot translate power into anything different than visuals, and then all of them are convinced that visuals are not needed at all. But then, when Nintendo gives to them something visually much better than the previous generation (when all of them were already singing the same song) you have them saying WOOOOOW! that new Pikmin looks amaaaaaazing, even months before of being able to experience its playability.
@ThomasBW84, man, you should have a look to the editing tools available today, more power means less effort and not the opposite. Ask yourself why the same game has way better textures, graphics, physics for PC than for PS3/XBoX and it is still cheaper, is that devs enjoy to work more for less money?

@hiptanaka, really? For a 60€ game which is an slight conversion of a Wii version? No, I'm not kidding at all, this is how Nintendo works.

Minimum effort, max profit: only reason 2D marios are like they are.
