Hope Castlevania will be like the MSX2 Konami original one. As well as Metalgear and Metalgear2 for MSX2, in both cases, far better than the nintendo portings.
And do you really think that NSMB Wii and SMG 2 are games that attracts the gamers at first sight??? If this is what they have to compete against Sony and Microsoft .. .. well ...
I dont see the relation between Epic's Unreal Engine and HD, I'm pretty sure it is not dependant on resolution but on raw power of the sytem (CPU power and RAM), oviosuly once the engine can at least run, then you might have a game with more or less polygons for the characters and more or less graphic resolution.
It is like most PC games, you have minimum specs which are usually required to run the game with minimum graphic settings, but the games are not just visuals only. How many games with simple graphics cannot run on a Wii simply due the required resources by the game AI? Or the AI would be so stupid that the game would be simply not worth playing. Or the ammount of RAM to handle a large maps (terrains, islands, scenaries) without accessing the DVD from scene to scene, independently of how good looking they are.
Current portable devices are way more powerful than DS and offers a way larger suite of services than DS, and companies like Mac want to make them a reference for serious gaming, not just crappy cellphone games. Here the hardware battle is already lost by Nintendo.
Xbox prices are getting closer to Wii ones, and both Microsoft and Sony are working on controllers which will provide simliar (or even way more advanced) functionalities as the Nintendo ones. When this happen, the only reason to have a Wii would be to play games made specifically by Nintendo (same case as with GC).
Now I dont know of any plan from Nintendo to counterstrike these. And even more, while others fully support those wanting to create games for their consoles or phones (SDKs, development tools, etc), Nintendo seems to do the opposite with the Wii. The end result is that you have nice looking games made by Nintendo and in most cases terribly looking games made by the rest.

Re: iPhone more powerful than Wii?
Nintendo faces two big dangers in short time:
