The Super Mario Bros. game for Wii U that Shigeru Miyamoto teased yesterday will be based on last year's New Super Mario Bros. Mii experience, Nintendo has confirmed.
A representative told Kotaku:
In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.
Yesterday we pondered whether Super Mario on Wii U would be a crowd pleaser or a game changer, and now we know.
Are you pleased by this news?

This is the best news ever!
Can't wait. I've wanted a new 2D Mario ever since New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's been far too long of a wait. I hope they have some nice level designs in this one and actually improve on the first two games.
They should allow online multiplayer, also, I think that a level creator would go a looooong way to making this game last for a very long time. Can't wait to see more about it at E3.
Sounds like a good game as a launch game to get new systems selling and being played with to the nth degree
Not surprised, I'm sure it's gonna be a fun game but I'm not too excited for it. I do want to know how the controller is gonna work for this though.
@19Robb92
"I've wanted a new 2D Mario ever since New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's been far too long of a wait." What... Two years?
Underwhelmed.
I'd rather see something new along the lines of a Super Mario 64, but with more pizazz.
I'd be up for new bosses. Don't think they can give the Koopa Kids, Bowser Jr. or Boom Boom good twists that make them feel fresh enough.
A world map that blends the secrets and switch-palaces of SMW with the fights and hidden areas of SMB3 would be amazing too.
It will also be interesting to see if this goes to retail or the download shop and if there's connectivity between this and the coming 3DS game. (Who knows if they'll be any different from another.)
All in all a new 2D Mario game that's at least on par with NSMBW can't be a bad thing. I hope other E3 games show us how the console can really change gaming then.
I'm not nearly as excited for this as I would be for a radical new take on the jump man's shenanigans. Now what I'm hoping for is even more of a return to the past with a robust overworld map ala Super Mario World including secret areas and most importantly: the ability to fly through a level whether it be with a cape, tail, hat, or something entirely new. I just want to see some 2D flying mechanics that really open up the sky when it comes to the exploration aspect.
@ #8 You know what boss they need? Reznor. I still chuckle to myself whenever I think about that ridiculous mini boss.
No more Galaxy thing please.
Hope it's tough.
@Haywired
About 2, yes. That's one year too many if you ask me. They should have had a 2D Mario game as a early 3DS title as well IMO. Would have made the first 4 months a lot more bearable.
@Corbs I agree, I was hoping they would return to the open world concepts of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine (Galaxy was more linear then open)
I'm fine with it. I kinda wish it was a 3D title a bit more, but honestly, I love 2D Mario games enough to be satisfied with this news!
They're going to do both 3D and 2D Mario in Wii U's lifetime, let's be honest. I really like NSMBW but having done it all I'm ready for a new version. This should be it!
Oh man I was hoping it'd be a new epic 3D Mario to add to the franchise Oh well, more Mario is always a good thing & I'm sure I'll love this next one. & it's probably a good thing anyway because now I can save my money & not get the Wii U at launch
I'll always prefer a 3D Mario, but I am mega excited for this as well.
My friends and I had so much fun playing NSMBW it's unreal.
I'm praying this is a launch title, it would do wonders for WiiU's sales.
Should be better than 3D Mario, at least.
I'm trying to not get excited since New Super Mario Bros. Wii was a let down.I was hoping for something like Super Mario 64 or 3D land or even the first New Super mario Bros.
I'm kind of for this and against this. On one hand I love 2D Mario games and I'm glad they've made a comeback, however this is a Mario game on new hardware - it's not the best one to launch with. I think people will be looking for something technically impressive like Mario 64 was. People will just see a 2D Mario as something the Wii could do and maybe even doubt the console's power.
So yeah, it's good news in that it's a good game, but slightly worrying they're picking this as their Mario launch game.
What I expected, so good news.
Sad face. I had a fantasy in my head that Nintendo was teasing super Mario mii and that they were going to put it on the 3ds
@ James - I agree, but given that we're already seeing the "Wii U isn't powerful enough" stuff popping up, I would have thought Nintendo might have tried to knock one out of the park with a 3D Super Mario title. But I'll take NSMB Wii U, just not quite I was expecting.
Hopefully it's actually challenging,i prefer 2D Mario games because the 3D ones are incredibly easy.
YES! I KNEW IT!
I hope it doesn't feel slapped together with bare bones features like NSMBW. But hey, they've been working on it more than a year apparently, so why not have high hopes.
I would have liked a 3D Mario at launch, but it'll show up eventually I'm sure.
Damn! Well, at least it's gonna be a launch title that will sell like hot cakes, I just hope it's more creative and not a copy of SMBWii, which left me kinda disappointed. 3D Mario awesomeness will have to wait.
Just another New Super Mario Bros. game doesn't really excite me, but I am excited to find out what they're going to add to this one to make it stand out from the previous entries and what unique and interesting things they can manage to use the touch screen for with a game like this, if this is supposed to showcase the Wii U.
I feel disappointed for some reason. Don't get me wrong, I love playing 2D mario games but considering it feels like I just played New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii not too many years ago, I was anticipating a completely new game for Wii U. Who knows, Nintendo may show off multiple mario games at E3.
Is a game that looks/plays exactly the same as on Wii really gonna entice the masses to buy a new system?
I am very disappointed about this, because it is just a boring New super mario bros again. I would have hoped something new and exiting, something what would sell lot because it's something new
P.S. I don't like new super mario bros games at all.
Stop with the doom and gloom. You guys know nothing about this game. Wait until E3 and then you judge the game.
Stop with the doom and gloom. You guys know nothing about this game. Wait until E3 and then you can judge the game. I am excited for this. It would definitely make the WiiU an instant seller if there was a launch Mario title.
I liked New Super Mario Bros. Wii but they have to add something surprising to this new title like a level editor and online functionality (online multiplayer and level sharing). Not too interested in this game but still picking it up when I have nothing better to buy.
hmm...kind of wanted something new...well, that's ok. I know it will still be great! I hope there is more mutliplayer fun with it.
They need online play (With voice chat to chat with friends, or being able to video chat with them on the touchscreen), a level designer, and it could use DLC to make sure we keep playing it for a long time. What if every month for $4.99 (Or something) you can get a new world with a certain theme. That would be a good way to keep us playing our console while waiting for the "Next wave of games" to come out.
I wanted a galaxy or a 3D Mushroom Kingdom ame, sorta like galaxy. Oh well, this'll have to hold me over...
@Skywardlink98 great idea, doubt they will do it.
Can't say I'm not disappointed, its a brand new HD system and Nintendo decides to play it safe with this? How is that supposed to show case the power of the Wii U? Mario has always either launched a new system or came around later to raise the bar for what it can do and what's expected. Unless its completely different from what the demonstration was last year, there's nothing to be excited about with this one.
I was hoping for a 3d mario like Galaxy or Galaxy 2...I loved new super mario bros wii but I don't know if it will show off the full potential of the system. At the very least let me go co-op with 3 other players online. This is 2012 Nintendo - get it straight already.
See this is what I get for putting my hopes way to high if you read my comment on the 1st article about the new Mario game on WiiU then I'm sure you can tell I'm am very disapointed
Update: This is a good 1st step now that I really think about it i guess but they got to bring to the table online co-op with voice chat, a healthy dose of motion controls, signifigently better graphics and just as good if not better levels then the last ones. THEY HAVE TO BRING ALL 4 OF THE THINGS I LISTED OR THIS IS GONNA BE A BIG FLOP!
@SkywardLink98
This is what I'm thinking - N has never been very good w/ online, so making this online multiplayer IS a big deal for them. Of course I don't really see it as a Mario game if everybody is just playing a 2D online side scrolling platformer w/ their own Miis, but I can see that as being very marketable. And that's what N is trying to do, market a new system, so this is how they do it:
1. New HD (first ever?) side scrolling Mario game
2. Play as your own HD Mii
3. Play online with friends
4. Voice and/or video chat (%50 shot at voice, 10% video)
This isn't how you advertise to the hardcore, it's how you get 100 million families to upgrade. I think N is looking over at Sony's 4 years of loses and have decided having $ is better than having a hardcore audience.
So there will be new 2D Mario for WiiU and 3DS. I guess they´ll be called New Super Mario Bros Mii and New Super Mario Bros 3D and they will use the exact same backrounds, enemies and bosses from the previous games.
Really, they should make something like Super Mario World again. Switch palaces, Star Road, one huge map.
I am excited for this game. New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros Wii were great, but they have to dish out something new in this one than just Miis. I'm thinking Replays must return from Super Mario Advance 4 and the inclusion of many other features, like more power ups, more levels, more bosses, and more extras.
Online play, though I'll be honest, is just another story and I really don't think this game needs online play since it is a game that people play in the same room as each other (plus, it's a Mario game, unlike Strikers Charged). If this game does incorporate online play, then that's fine, as long as reviewers do not complain that the game doesn't have online play if it doesn't.
I think all this really confirms is that the game will be a 2D sidescroller, and you'll be able to play as your Miis. I doubt it'll look as much like NSMBW as last years demo did. As I said in the other news threads, I really hope it's less a homage and more a true sequel. Of course if it had a mode where you could design your own levels, I wouldn't care if it was just another NSMB game, because that would seriously validate the price right there on its own.
Snore. How boring.
As a business decision this is the right one for Nintendo. NSMB games sell stupid amounts, get that out first to earn console sales then 3D Mario, which is a little less of a system seller, but will please the fans, who will likely already own the system.
Also, @XCWarrior are you the one from the Tetris high scores?
Ehh.... At least my wife will be excited!
Can it really be that much different from what we seen? I sure hope so....
Someone posted a link to an article on another website about this in the recent Mario Wii U feature and this was my reaction: (I've added a bit though)

If this really is just New super Mario bros. Wii with Miis and in HD, I will be severely disappointed as that would be way too unoriginal. It feels like the Mario series is becoming Nintendo's way of easily securing a load of sales for a certain platform each year rather than a way to show off their creativity like it used to be.I hope that they at least have different themes for each world rather than the same themes but in a different order like in NSMBW which was still a great game but I'd rather not more of the same with HD and some bloody miis added. I've got nothing against Miis but I don't want to see them in a main series Mario game and I'm just frustrated at the completely unimaginative direction Nintendo are taking the main Mario series.
Though I would love a new 3D Mario game, I wasn't really expecting one. I mean, Nintendo just finished Mario 3D Land last year, and I would think/hope it takes more than a year to develop a new HD 3D Mario. Here's hoping they go back to the Mushroom Kingdom for an expanded visit (Mario 64 2).
Even so, a new New Super Mario is always good news. Those games have proven to be excellent, and I can't wait to see what they do with this one. As I recall, they were also planning a new side-scrolling Mario for 3DS this year. Could it be they're planning some cross platform play somehow?
Aw man, the NSMB games sucked (well, as much as a Mario game can). They were well built but were not original, nor did they invoke any sort of nostalgia (for me, at least).
When it comes to recent Mario games, I like the Galaxies the best, followed by 3D Land, and then the NSMB games. I grew up on SMB3 and SMW, so I'm a big fan of 2D Mario, so I hope this time around they create one that can stand toe to toe with the classics.
I think it's possible to say that, if you knew me personally, I am the biggest Super Mario fan for miles and miles. And yet, I am incredibly unimpressed with this news, which is a difficult feat because I am excited by all Super Mario news. I hated the New Super Mario Bros Mii demo. And, frankly, I'm tired of the New Super series. I hope SMB4 is real and changes things up. Besides, we have a 2D Mario in the works for 3DS. Why would they make 2 at the same time, unless they were doing some sort of cool connectivity thing (which I doubt)?
@Corbs: Who said they weren't gonna do that?
wow!!!! i got to see this ima big fan of mario side scrolling games
nsmb is the worst mario game i have played, and the only one i have never finished.Like a few others have said disapointing.
No. This does not amply show off the Wii U's new power, and although it may make interesting use of the tablet I think a 3d Super Mario adventure game would have been so much better suited to show off every potential of the new console, from sprawling vibrant worlds in HD, to use of the tablet.
The NSMB Mii demo from last year looked IDENTICAL to NSMB Wii, as if it was running on an emulator on a PC in HD. That's ALL it was!
And if I'm playing a Mario game I want to play as mario - not mario's body with a Mii head on it. That holds no interest for me.
I'm rather disappointed. You can't expect Nintendo to not make a sequel to NSMB Wii since it was so successful, but that as Mario's first outing on the new console?
I'll tell you one thing - this better be because it's a simpler game and therefore easier to have ready by launch. Nintendo best be having something incredible cookin' under their sleeves for Mario's first 3d adventure on Wii U.
That, and they better have some other big Nintendo franchise ready for launch (Pikmin 3 is cool but I'd rather see F Zero or Metroid) to move those consoles off the shelves.
NSMB Mii is not going to make me buy a Wii U on launch for full price, not by a long shot. If there are other great games (not 3rd party, because I can always get those on my 360) on launch by Nintendo, then maybe I'll still pick up a Wii U on launch, and then I'll get this game anyway. But if not, then I'm going to be waiting until bigger & better Nintendo titles come along.
Don't get me wrong - NSMB Wii was incredible and I loved every second of it. But another one - i just don't know how they are going to change it up enough that it isn't simply an HD clone with Miis....to be honest NSMB Wii was the same thing as NSMB on DS, just with multiplayer and new levels.
I love NSMB Wii so I'ld say it's definitely a good start on the Wii U
As has been mentioned already, we will see 2d and 3d Mario on this system. 2d Mario will be a good launch game with Mario in 3d O vision probably about a year after launch. Also on a side note, I really hope Nintendo get the online right. I have both a 360 and ps3 as well as wii, the online is fantastic, but so many people are as*holes. I really think the online Nintendo community would be so much better.
I am happy, but not surprised. I really hope it is a pre-installed app.
That`s all i needed to read. I`ll just wait and hope they decide to make somthing along the lines of Mario 64. I loved the open world like levels and exploring them. Until then, i'll keep on playing that and the Banjo and Kazooie games.
I think it's good news, but I was kinda hoping for a 3D Mario.
I don't care. I'm looking forward to the Wii U. If this is my first Wii U game, then I'll play the [expletive] out of it.
I really hope this is a challenging game. I want to see some great level designs that take skill to get through. Online Multiplayer would be amazing for this also...
I expect a ton from this installment of the series, as NSMB Wii is a disappointment compared to the DS orignal, and it is releasing on Nintendo's next console. They better be creative, and not again go down the path of developing a rehash. Nintendo is trying to do everything it can to make the launch of Wii U as difficult as possible on their selves.
I hope this is going to be one of the release games. And I also hope that this game would have some more levels than NSMBW. It would be awesome if there would actually be something to buy with star coins. In the last NSMB there was only some videos. Collecting star coins would be more awarding if there would be a feature to buy minigames for example.
Hmm, I much rather see a new, original free-roaming Mario. Yet another New super Mario bros won't convince me much!
I would like one for the 3DS that is actually good. I didn't really like the Super Mario for the DS
@Corbs #17
And that isn't Mario Galaxy
Damn it, i didn't like New Super Mario Bros. Wii!!!! It kinda sucked!!!! Such an awesome console deserves something way better !!!! It would've been better if it was like Super Mario 3D land!!!! -__-
I-U NSMB games absolutely trounce the 3D Mario games in sales - how would choosing this over 3D Mario make the Wii U a more difficult sell?
@shonenjump86 Most likely it'll be the same as the Wii version of New super Mario bros. I as well want to try this controller.
((I don't see the point making this handheld/system. I don't know why someone will just force you off the television, And what if your Wii is in your room?))
I just think the Wii U is not that worth it. It'd be best to buy 3DS.
