Re: Nintendo Posts First Annual Loss in 30 Years

James

@Burning_Spear ha, I really should have done that!

"Nintendo lost money on every machine except the one bought by Nintendo Life user Burning Spear, who insisted on paying an extra $300 for the privilege. 'I just really like Nintendo,' he said."

Re: Nintendo Posts First Annual Loss in 30 Years

OK, so here's the skinny.

Nintendo has only been releasing consolidated earnings reports for the past 30 years, so I can't dig any further. "First annual loss in 30 years" is closer to "first annual loss in the 30 years since Nintendo started releasing statistics."

Other sites are saying it's the company's "first-ever loss" but as Nintendo's a 122-year old company and we haven't got records from before 1981, that seems unlikely.

So there you have it. Nintendo may have posted a loss more than 30 years ago but without the earnings reports I can't prove it. Just covering my backside on this one

Re: Nintendo Posts First Annual Loss in 30 Years

@kyuubikid213 Nintendo made and sold a number of different products and services before consoles — love testers, Ultra Hand, love hotels! — and of course it was making arcade games before NES came out. Wouldn't surprise me if they lost Nintendo money!

Re: Nintendo Posts First Annual Loss in 30 Years

@Kirk I only have access to their financial records for the past 30-something years but Develop and Gamasutra — both experts in this kind of thing — say Nintendo previously posted losses over 30 years ago. It's certainly the first annual loss for Nintendo as a console manufacturer.

I'm still investigating it!

Re: Nintendo Sets 10 Million Wii U Sales Target

James

@Kage_88 I think it's more to do with the machine's release, to be honest — if it's out in the last few months of this year, how likely is it to shift 5m before April?

It's an interesting figure for sure — Nintendo expected 4m 3DS sales in its first month, so what percentage of this figure is for Wii U and what is for Wii? Tell me, Mr Iwata!

Re: Nintendo Dominates UK's All-Time Top 10

James

@Burning_Spear No idea, man. MCV just says "software only (accessory value not included". I assume it means the total RRP of the whole package, rather than £34.99 for game + £6.99 for wheel or whatever. I don't know, I just know it's a whole shed full o' money.

Re: Guide: Nintendo 3DS System Update v. 4.0.0-7

James

@clubmini Yep, and still does! Press L or R on the Home Menu to bring up the option. I guess Nintendo figured not many people knew that, so now it's in the eShop settings menu, where plenty more people ca... oh wait.

Re: Talking Point: What New Super Mario Bros. 2 Means for 3DS and Nintendo

James

@CowLaunch I think there needs to be a balance. Making Skyward Sword MotionPlus-only was a great creative choice, but financially probably not so much. Wii U looks like an awesome creative machine, but isn't a guaranteed moneymaker.

At a stage where 3DS is still growing, Nintendo needs as many bankable hits as possible to grow the machine to a point where it's viable a smaller, more offbeat title could turn a profit. We all moan that Rhythm Thief and Tales of the Abyss don't trouble the charts but that's because the 3DS install base just isn't big enough. More Mario games will help.

Re: Nintendo Reveals New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS

James

@Knuckles There's a thread with over 600 comments. I challenge you to find it.

3DS needs hit software to sell more hardware to encourage more developers to take a chance on it. If Nintendo makes a Mario game that sells another 15-25 million units, this is a Very Good Thing for everyone.

Re: Animal Crossing Tobidase Reaches Japan This Fall

James

Tom Nook has been the shopkeeper in every Animal Crossing game yet, but in this one he's changed vocations and is now a real estate agent, I believe. Looks like he left a pink sheep in dungarees in charge (sales increase 500%)

Re: Review: Super Street Fighter II (Wii Virtual Console / Mega Drive)

James

@SkywardLink98 You can fight against friends — as the review says, "you can choose to battle a stranger or a friend, as long as you swap those Friend Codes of course."

@DJM it's SEGA-published so it was their decision to make it online, not Capcom's, form what I gather.

@madgear I too have had some good matches on here, just wish there were a bit more personality to it — had some great fights against a strong Guile on Friday, but will never know who it was!
