@electrolite77 yes those games donmatter after you played them. Who keeps playing the same Zelda at the same level of excitement? As we say in sales, “get quarter, so what’re you gonna do next?”
Just remember people, you can’t “play” sales, you play games. 60 million systems sold means nothing if there are only 20 versions of Yoshi’s Island to play.
Also they have to be games “YOU” are interested in. Almost every Nintendo gamer wanted to play Zelda and Oddessy. Only a fraction of those want another Mario party game.
In business you want everyone, not just a fraction.
I’m sure many will enjoy Pokémon, Mario Tennis, and smash. No Metroid, wave race, pilotwings, or any other decent IP means they can sell another 20 million, but I won’t be buying any games. It’s like they are stuck offering the same handful of IPs. Nothing really new and compelling. I’ve moved on to a PS4 and more open world games than I can handle. My Switch is in the closet, and in fine with that.
The sales they are seeing now are from people who wanted the next thing, but didn't have the money the first year or had other obligations. They need to bring out domino go beyond Zelda and SMO.
They could sell 60 million systems, but it means nothing to me if there aren't games I want to play, I own 2 Nintendo games and one old 3rd party game I'd already played on another system years ago. My switch is in the closet now, that way I don't have to dust it. This has also made room for my "new" PS4. I now have so many great games I'll be happy for at least 3 or more years. After that I'll look at the switch again, but right now it's pretty much dead in my eyes. Not everyone get excited over yoshi, Pokémon, and smash. Good luck Nintendo.
Sorry, but I see WiiU happening again. There is nothing I will buy this year. I bought one game for WiiU while waiting for a Zelda game. Nintendo's E3 had nothing for me. But I'm ok leaving my switch in the closet for now.
Nintendo trying to get their hands in our pockets again. There should be a way to store games on an external drive, period. And as for games, it's always the same old rehash with nothing you really want. The fanboys will scream,"Wait till next year, there'll be better games", but that old reply played out decades ago.
Thus another reason for the current drought of quality games. Thus another reason to own another system when you own a Switch.
But come on! Honestly there’s been a Shenmue announcement every 8 months for the past 20 or so years. I wouldn’t believe anything at this point until something hits the store shelves.
It doesn’t bother me at all that my Switch is in the closet right now, due to the lack of compelling AAA games. I know this is how Nintendo operates. Minimal AAA 3rd party support and rare AAA 1st party support.
But probably late this year or mid next year something decent will pop up. That’s works for me.
Great to see Shinobi Refle: Senran Kagura is doing well. Beautiful story. I wish Platinum Train made the list, but I’m not sure if it’s a game you can purchase. Fun game though!
Unless you just joined gaming everyone should know to keep their expectations low at all times in regards to Nintendo. Sometimes you’ll get a surprise, but mostly it’s just general news.
Nothing I’m interested in, so I’m planning to get another console for my open-world needs. It’s still early in the year, but most likely my next Nintendo game purchased will be in 2019.
@subpopz there's always the option to buy the game at a better overall cost on another system. Being a gamer is great, we have options. It's up to system manufacturers to make using their system the same, better, or worse than another. Ignoring this is bad business, buy Nintendo is known for ignoring common sense business. As always gamers will vote with their wallets and I personally have other things to do with my money. I'm a gamer, not a company worshiper.
@Anti-Matter it's not about systems, it's really about games. Whoever can deliver the great games "you" want to play at a great value. Nintendo doesn't make it easy for 3rd party devs to deliver their content, so as a gamer I have the freedom to buy games on another system. How stupid was it that LA Noire was $10 more on the switch? Lunacy! It would be foolish to pay more for something if I don't have to.
@FragRed it’s not only that the big games will be delayed, but also the cost of gaming on the Switch is so much more. Time to “switch” to another console.
@darthstuey I purchased Zelda,............................................................................................................(drought)............................................................................................I purchased a SMO,..............................................(drought)......................................................??
@Mikemario @Balta666 I disagree. Nintendo is a AAA 1st party developer. Even if they make yoshi and Kirby games for the kids that I am not interested in playing, the quality of what they produce puts them in the top tier.
@Deathwalka New Donk City is great, just like gamers expected. We always knew it would be cool for Mario to be in the real world. I wish the city was double that size, but the Switch has its limits.
I've played Mario games since to NES and SMO is a great nod to all those games.
@darthstuey why did people say their Wii was "collecting dust"? Because there were no games they wanted. It was all shovelware. Also from the NES to the GameCube there was AAA 3rd party support, though it started to slowdown even more with the GCN. Nintendo has always been slow to release content, since the NES that was the case. The difference was all the AAA 3rd party support that filled in the blanks.
Now they want everyone to just accept C grade 3rd party support as AAA 3rd party support, but I'm literally not buying it. I'm not that desperate. If others want it that's fine. People like Phone games too and there's nothing wrong with that. From the NES onward I have paid for and played great games and I'll continue to do so.
Knowing this is Nintendo's way of doing business I'm fine with that. I'll pay the 3 games that will come out and that will be fine. If more come out, like a new Waverace or 1080 snowboard game I'll pick it up. But C grade games, Yoshi, Kirby, Pokémon, or old 3rd party games I played years ago, I'll pass.
I'll be getting another system so I can play Watchdogs 3, Just Cause 3, Witcher 3, and some of the new AAA grade titles.
@darthstuey that is what I plan to do. I figured the Switch will have at least 3 decent games and that's fine with me. I'm not complaining, just being honest given Nintendo's typical relof low powered systems that won't get full support of current gen AAA 3rd party games.
I've played Nintendo games since the NES, so I know how they operate. Everything is going as expected. This time I won't have a system sit out and collect dust. I'll get a current gen system and get the majority of my gaming there. It's all good!
@electrolite77 amount of AAA, not reissued games, Zelda and SMO. That's why SMO sold so well. If any new AAA 3rd party support comes the droughts will be less. I'm expecting to put my Switch back in the box once I finish SMO. I'll take it out again after MP4 comes out.
Does calling it the greatest Mario game ever affect my enjoyment of the game? No. So call it whatever you wish. Other than missing a raccoon tail and large bright blocks with screws in them I'd say this is a great homage to the history of the Mario franchise.
"Switch owners have rushed to buy it, breaking sales records in the US" DUH! As if there's anything else to purchase right now. We finished Zelda months ago, and who wants to buy old rehashed WiiU games (Spitn 2, MK8). Later we'll get some AAA 3rd party attention, but it's been a drought after Zelda.
@Leostacks it's not unusual. Here in the Midwest we have seen 2-5 Switches at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Gamestop on a regular basis. For the past 3 months it hasn't been hard to find a Switch in a store if someone was really looking for one. That should change in the next 2 months, that's my guess.
Back OT, IMO one view is that overall sales should be lower than the Wii, due to the Wii being so popular even parents no grandparents wanted one. The Switch will "mostly" be purchased by gamers.
Having said that. If Nintendo can get 1st year Wii quantities on the shelves it could be possible to sell them. No matter what it will be interesting to watch how it plays out.
4K TVs are not that expensive. They were practically giving them away last Xmas, so I expect more of the same this year.
I already played the game on the 360 and I don't see any graphical improvements in this video. Maybe Digital Foundry will post a video that shows the difference.
I agree with the article on many points. It almost seems that Zelda got high marks just because the world was huge. The story was thin, there was no reason to get some items, and most enemy's were on-existent.
I'm sorry I'm Nintendo-only fans missed out on games like Witcher. And for massive open worlds, if they thought BotW was good they should have played Just Cause 2. That world was massive! And for more in depth stories they should put away the hater shades and seriously check out the GTA series.
But hey BotW was fun for what it was and a great first try for Nintendo regarding huge, realistic worlds. The next Zelda can do nothing but be even better. This, however, was not GOTY material.
So many great games. Reading everyone's posts brought back some good memories. If only there was a way to get those great games added to the SNES mini.
@Damo if you're really interested consider checking wiki on the subjects Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto III, Dan Houser, and Body Harvest. From these you will see how tight the Connection is between them all.
IGN also did a great article on GTA and said: "Bringing GTA into the present tense hit its first roadblock when the DMA crew pulled Body Harvest's 3D code off the shelf and found it'd aged badly."
My point is that GTA, which belonged to DMA was later influenced by another DMA title, Body Harvest. That influence gave us the huge 3D open world GTA that is so well known today. And this is how we get to LA Noire coming to Switch.
@Heavyarms55 "GTA's tendency to feature things like sexual abuse, rape and torture... I don't like that." can you tell me where these "tendencies" are shown. GTA V, yes, once, one character. There is no trend in this. It's people in the media making up have this crap that tries to get attention and ratings.
@Damo but you can say DMA + Rockstar = GTA III. Houser even sad that it was looking at the assists for Body Harvest gave him the idea to try making a GTA game where you could get into any vehicle and drive it. Body Harvest is why we have the GTA games we have today. DMA created the code for BH and thus, etc.
@Anti-Matter too bad here in the States some parents are not as thoughtful. I've seen it at least twice where a kid in a game store told their parents they wanted the game, and the store clerk always told the parent that the games was rated Mature and contained violence. Both times the parents purchased the game anyway.
I love the GTA series and I play it as an adult. I don't drive around running over people, etc., but that's me. I hope the series comes to the Switch and that parents learn to make better choices for their children.
@Heavyarms55 I personally love the series. I played them as an adult with an adult mindset. I never drove around creating violence and mayhem as the kids and teens did. I saw them as vast open worlds to be lived in and explored alnong with the story content. To me they are mature sandbox games.
I love all 3rd person, open world games from Just Cause to Watchdogs, Infamous to Sleeping Dogs. That's the reason I stopped buying Nintendo games. I like mature content along with a bit of Zelda. I hope LA Noire does well so that others will follow, but I wouldn't mind getting a PS4 pro and putting the Switch in the closet until Metroid is released.
DMA Designs Body Harvest is the grandfather of GTA III. It always desevers a mention, because without it we would have the GTA series many love today. Body Harvest's open world, drive or fly whatever vehicle you can find, mechanics were ahead of their time.
Chinatown Wars takes place in Liberty City and you can visit areas from that game in GTA IV.
LA Noire was a very good game that I'd consider getting again on the Switch. Some people didn't care for the interrogation mechanics, and thought it slowed down the game play, but I still enjoyed the game.
I'd like to see the re-releases of GTA III, VC, and SA show up on the Switch. If they can be on iOS the move to switch should be easy.
Glad some people get how Nintendo can stop scalpers, it's called fulfill preorders. Even better have everyone pay a non-refundable $25-30. That way if a scalper creates 100 preorders they pay and never get their money back after everyone gets their systems and won't buy one with a inflated price.
Nintendo, great at games, bad at game business.
PS fire the person who said the NES Classic couldn't do better than a cheaply made retro Sega system with trash software , like 8-bit chess.
@MrKai a conversation with AAA 3rd party companies would have quickly shown that a 32Gb card is not a good option and the storage they offer internally needed to be increased.
It doesnt matter. Nintendo will continue to do what they do and there will always be those willing to excuse it.
Expensive media options for 3rd party support. This has been a regular occurrence/problem with Nintendo products since the NES. Hell will freeze over when Nintendo actually does something to promote 3rd party support.
