Re: Sakurai Explains Reasoning Behind Removal Of Ice Climbers From Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

@Yorumi

I see what you're saying. But I think a lot of what the both of us are talking about is still just speculation until Sakurai clarifies certain things. There's no way we can take guesses about Pokemon Trainer's exclusion or to what extent the 3DS version hampered the Wii U version, if at all (other than Ice Climbers' exclusion of course). Even if it did in some way, there's no need to blame Nintendo for it, and honestly I don't see why you would. It was clearly Sakurai's design choice and this game is his creative space. And who's to say he won't add Ice Climbers back as DLC if his team eventually figures it out after release? His team is under a lot of time constraints and probably just didn't have time to make them work. You could either have a 49-character Smash 3DS out on October 3rd, or a 50-character Smash 3DS out in 2015. I personally don't think Ice Climbers were worth delaying the game over, which is probably what would've had to happen if he had spent more time and resources trying to include them. I think he made the right design choice.

Re: Video: Episode One Of Zeldamotion's Link To The Past Animated Series Makes Its Debut

FlaygletheBagel

The writing is by far the worst part of this, followed closely by the voice acting. Let's review for a second.

Link: "My first harvest. These apples are perfect! Just the right color and shine!"
Uncle: "Let me see..."
(5 second pause)
Uncle: (forced laugh) "This is a great start for the season!"
Link: "This has got to be the best apple orchard in all of Hyrule! Everyone's gonna travel here to try my apples!" [unintentional but obvious sexual innuendo]
Uncle: YOUR apples, huh?
Link: I've even got a name for the orchard!
Uncle: Oh yeah? And what is that?
Link: Well it would make sense to name it 'Link's LEGENDARY apple orchard!'
Uncle: (Really overexaggerated laugh)
Link: What's so funny?

I'm not against the effort to make an animated Zelda, but if you're going to do something like this, at least get some people who can write and do decent voice acting. At least the music is spot-on.

Re: Sakurai Explains Reasoning Behind Removal Of Ice Climbers From Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

I'm shocked at the amount of complaining on this thread. Smash fans can never be appeased, can they? Youve got almost 50 characters in the game, and you're still complaining that Ice Climbers got cut? And then people are complaining about the three clone characters in this game, but look how that stacks up to Melee's SIX. I'm tired of people hating on this roster. Sometimes characters get cut. Big deal. Go find one of the other 48 characters in this game to use.

Re: Sakurai Explains Reasoning Behind Removal Of Ice Climbers From Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

@Yorumi
You have no reason to believe the Wii U version will be "unappealing" to 3DS owners. Neither does anyone, frankly. We barely know anything about the game other than the fact that it has the same roster of characters. Who's to say Sakurai won't show 3DS owners a SIGNIFICANT reason to pick up the console version too? What if he surprises everyone and pulls out another campaign mode exclusive to Wii U? What if he blows everyone's mind with a ton of other reveals on the Wii U version? I think you're assuming the Wii U and 3DS versions won't be that different, and that there won't be any incentive for 3DS owners to get the Wii U version. That's something you can't make assumptions about, because we just don't know yet.

As far as the release schedule goes, Nintendo made the right choice releasing 3DS first. They essentially had three options with the two versions:

1) Release the Wii U version first and the 3DS version second. While this may have sold a few more Wii Us, it also would have cannibalized the 3DS version's sales. If the Wii U version does indeed have more content, I'd venture to say that a lot of people would get the full HD Smash experience for Wii U first, and then overlook the less-packed 3DS version.

2) Release them at the same time. This would have had the same issue. People would focus so much on the full console version that many would overlook the 3DS version. It would also have split the consumer's attention, because Sakurai would have had to focus on marketing both games at the same time. Think about it this way: if I have 60 dollars in my pocket, and I own a Wii U and a 3DS, and I can only choose one of the versions on release day, which one of them do you think I'm going to pick?

3) Release the 3DS version first, then the Wii U version. This is brilliant because it allows Nintendo to focus on one game at a time. The less content-rich 3DS version is shown off first, and the Wii U version isn't shown at all until the 3DS version hits. Not only does this build anticipation for the main title, but it also rakes in money like no other. Don't forget that the 3DS install base is significantly larger than the Wii U's. Nintendo will reap the rewards from its huge install base, and not only that, but with the larger version coming out later, a lot of 3DS gamers might decide the game is so good that they want the full HD, home console version to play with their friends.

I'd say Nintendo made the right calls with this, at least as far as making money is concerned!

Re: Nintendo 64x64: Mario Kart 64

FlaygletheBagel

I turned it on the other day and it honestly hasn't aged as well as I thought it did. The tracks are some of my favorites, but the only way this game will be a lot of fun today is if you still have friends who are on board with playing an older iteration of the game. If you don't, and I'd wager that's most people, once you play through Grand Prix, that's pretty much where the fun stops. I mean, you've got time trials, but what's the point if you're playing it by yourself and you've got nobody to compare your times to?

Bottom line: If I've got a choice between Mario Kart N64 and any of the past few Mario Karts, namely MK8, MK7, Wii, or Double Dash, then I will gladly pick any of those over the 64 version. Just one man's opinion.

Re: Sakurai Explains Reasoning Behind Removal Of Ice Climbers From Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

@Yorumi I agree completely that they need to push Wii U sales any way they can. And Smash is the only game left in Ninty's release schedule that will do that to a significant effect.

But I still think the core Smash experience that people adore - the sitting on the couch with some friends beating the snot out of each other - is something people will only get on the console version. I haven't met anyone in person so far who wants the 3DS version. But almost all of my friends want to play the Wii U version. Plus the fact that the console will have tons of exclusive stuff that the 3DS won't (HD graphics, exclusive modes, trophies, music, etc) is plenty of incentive for people who already own the 3DS version to get on board for the Wii U version.

I don't think the 3DS will suck the Wii U's sales away very much. IMO, despite having similar fighters, they're two very different games.

Re: Sakurai Explains Reasoning Behind Removal Of Ice Climbers From Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

@AugustusOxy So you're not going to buy the new Smash Bros. because Sakurai used more girls and swordsman than you would like? Dude, get over yourself. It's not like the core gameplay has changed or anything. The game is still a crossover game with a ton of unique fighters. If almost 50 diverse playable characters and the idea of playing as Mario, Mega Man, Pac Man, and Sonic in the same game doesn't remotely pique your interest, I'm surprised you were ever into a game like Smash Bros.

Re: Sakurai Explains Reasoning Behind Removal Of Ice Climbers From Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

@MajinSoul I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried at all about a lack of differences between the two, but I think it's less a matter of not having anything to show for the Wii U version and more about letting the 3DS version have the spotlight. If they start marketing the Wii U version and showing it off now, it could subtract from 3DS sales, because people will just want to get the console version for its likely higher amount of content. That's why they staggered the release dates of the 3DS and Wii U versions too. If they released them at the same time, people would just focus on the console version and neglect the handheld version, since that will likely be the more content-rich version. I want Wii U info too, but I honestly don't expect or want to see any until post-October 3rd. The 3DS needs its time in the spotlight, and Nintendo needs those handheld sales.

Re: Impending Japanese Launch Of Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS Brings New Character Reveals

FlaygletheBagel

I'm glad the leak was real (maybe a tad miffed that the leak revealed ALL the secret characters... was hoping for a few more), but I'm happy with the characters that are there. I AM disappointed at the lack of unlockable characters in this installment though. The starting roster is HUGE, too huge if you ask me. I would've preferred maybe a 15-20 character starting roster, and then you have to unlock the rest. Unlocking stuff is half of what makes Smash Bros. such a fun game! But I'll take what I can get here. Still can't wait to pick this one up!

Re: Feature: The Benefits of a Portable Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

@NinjaWaddleDee I have the same concern for both platforms, to be honest. Online is probably one of the only ways I'll be enjoying Smash with other people on 3DS. I don't have too many friends who have 3DS's, so if the online is laggy, I would have to settle for playing this game alone, which is fine, but it'll severely hurt the longevity of the game.

I really hope Sakurai makes the online modes in Smash for Wii U absolutely excellent too. After Brawl, it's hard not to be nervous about that.

Re: New Nintendo 3DS Models Announced

FlaygletheBagel

This is so freaking cool, but the switch to MicroSD is going to kick me in the wallet. I already have a 32GB SD card in my current 3DSXL. If I AM able to transfer my data to the New 3DS (which I sure hope I can do), it's still going to run me a good bit of money to get a MicroSD of comparable size.

Nintendo... I love you so much, but... have mercy on my wallet!

Re: Feature: The History of Super Smash Bros.

FlaygletheBagel

Fantastic feature guys! This is easily my favorite Nintendo series - nay, series in general - of all time. I was a proud owner of Smash 64 as a kid, and it was probably my second favorite game behind Mario 64. But then, when Melee came out, my brothers and I played it into the ground. It became my favorite game of all time, and it kept me occupied for years. Smash was the sole reason I bought a Wii, today I'm six challenges away from finally completing Brawl, and I plan on getting 100% on the 3DS and Wii U versions when they come out, too. Super Smash Bros. has always had and will always have a special place in my heart.

Re: Mario Kart 8 DLC Coming In November, Features Zelda, F-Zero And Animal Crossing

FlaygletheBagel

Are people seriously complaining about this? I thought people WANTED Mario Kart DLC, in the form of new tracks, characters and vehicles. Well guess what?? Here it is!

This game (without DLC) is arguably just as big, if not bigger, than every single prior Mario Kart release in the past. And now that Nintendo has decided to prolong the longevity of the game, adding MORE tracks, characters, AND vehicles than ANY other entry in the franchise, people are complaining? Can Nintendo ever win in the eyes of their own fanbase? Or are they always going to be subject to scrutiny, even when great news like this comes out of nowhere?

This is excellent news. I for one will be more than enjoying the Mercedes DLC, and these next two DLC packs. And you know what? If you don't want this stuff, then don't buy it! It's not that complicated. It's a surprise treat from a company that loves to surprise and give robust gameplay experiences to its fans. If you don't want to take part in that, then don't.

Re: Nintendo Has Nothing to Say About Recent Smash Bros. Video

FlaygletheBagel

I'm honestly frustrated at this leak getting out, and I also feel so horribly bad for Sakurai, who went through hand injuries making this game, who went to great lengths to keep us on our toes and surprise us, who toiled over this game night and day just to have it spoiled before it even hits stores.

Shame on anyone who relishes in the fact that this leak got out. Like it or not, this kind of stuff hurts Sakurai. He was so excited for people to see the cutscenes in Brawl, and got saddened and frustrated when people put all of the Subspace cutscenes on Youtube. That's the very reason he isn't including a Subspace campaign in the new games. If it upset him when people posted the game's content to YouTube AFTER the game came out, imagine how he feels now, when the game's nearly-full roster leaks weeks BEFORE the game comes out.

I like knowing the full roster as much as anybody, but dang, people. Think of the guy who is actually making this content for you. If I were him and I had to go through crap like this, I would just stop making these games altogether.

Re: Poll: Which Is The Best Super Mario Platformer?

FlaygletheBagel

There's a special place in my heart for Super Mario World, since it's the game that pretty much brought me into the Mario series. The same can be said for Super Mario 64. But man, quality wise, there's no way anything can compete with Galaxy 2. It's absolutely brilliant from start to finish, and even...

SPOILERS

... doubles its own length once you complete the game. Everything Galaxy did, Galaxy 2 did better. That's why my vote goes to Galaxy 2!

Re: Super Smash Bros. Seizes Gamescom Most Wanted Consumer Award

FlaygletheBagel

@ricklongo While I do agree that I would prefer more interesting names, I do understand why they named them the way they did. They were named that way to differentiate between the two versions, and to make it easier for the average consumer to understand.

Think about it this way: If they had given the games the same name - Like Super Smash Bros. Scuffle (which is a terrible name, but bear with me), then that would be a little misleading, because while the games do share the same roster and items, they are very different in other areas, like stages, game modes, trophies, challenges, and so on. Buying one version of Scuffle doesn't give you the same content as the other, and that could be confusing to the average consumer.

Meanwhile if you name them with different catchy names, like Super Smash Bros. Universe and Super Smash Bros. Scuffle, I can see how that could cause the opposite problem with the average consumer. Because then people might think the games are entirely different, even though the roster and items are shared between versions.

Wii U and 3DS may not be the most catchy or great names, but they are simple and serve their purpose. There's no confusion there - When you pick up Smash 3DS, you know you're getting the only Smash Bros. game on 3DS. Same with Wii U. So yeah, I totally agree that the "for Wii U" and "for 3DS" titles are kinda uninteresting, but I do see why they decided on them.

Re: Feature: HD Remasters That Would Be Perfect for Wii U

FlaygletheBagel

@mjc0961 Not sure how you figure that, since Super Mario 3D World counts as a 3D Mario game. Hence the "3D" in the title and the fact you can move on a 3-dimensional plane. It may not be the 120-star exploration game that the other 3D Marios are, but that doesn't disqualify it from being 3D Mario.

Re: Feature: HD Remasters That Would Be Perfect for Wii U

FlaygletheBagel

I would gladly drop 60 dollars on a Sunshine and Galaxy 1 + 2 remake, but I don't know if I'd do the same with just the Galaxies. They're great games, but they already look pretty dang brilliant on the Wii Mode, and I already own both. I don't think I could justify paying 60, 50, or even 40 dollars for slightly better looking versions. But throw in Sunshine and I'm a hundred percent sold. I'd drop 60 bucks on an HD Sunshine alone.

Re: Donkey Kong Jr. Math Arriving on the Wii U Virtual Console on 28th August

FlaygletheBagel

Wow, this is the first time I can actually say it would have been better if we had just gotten nothing that week. Donkey Kong Jr. Math is almost straight up insulting.

@JJtheTexan I've been doing the same thing, my friend. Surely Nintendo isn't blind to how pitiful the VC support has been up to this point. We probably aren't the only ones making our voices heard on Club Nintendo.

Seriously, their VC meetings have to go something like, "Well, let's see here. We can choose from Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Metroid Zero Mission, or we can bring N64 games to VC with Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. What do you all think we should do?"

board unanimously agrees with Donkey Kong Jr. Math

"That's exactly what I was thinking. Great work guys!"

Re: More Single Player Details Enter The Battle in Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS

FlaygletheBagel

I'm not big on the amount of single player content in the game - it feels weak by Brawl standards, but I suppose that's to be expected. I think they spiced up the traditional Classic Mode enough to keep me from getting bored with single player. Still, beating Classic with every character will still feel like a grind every now and then.

I've got this version pre-ordered though and can't wait to play it!

Re: Review: Mega Man Battle Network (Wii U eShop / Game Boy Advance)

FlaygletheBagel

@JacketsNest101 @FX29 Thanks for the recommendations! I went ahead and purchased it, and I'm enjoying it a lot this far. The net definitely is the weakest point of the game, definitely confusing to navigate. The battle system is unique and I'm impressed with it, even if it is a bit clunky to work with at first. Overall though, it's a lot of fun!

Re: Nintendo Unleashes An Awesome Trailer Showing Off Upcoming Wii U Exclusives

FlaygletheBagel

@AVahne I would wait until it comes out and you see it running on the console itself. I thought the 3DS version looked like crap until I saw some E3 videos of the game actually running on a 3DS. I've seen some videos that don't make Smash Wii U look like much of a visual upgrade from Brawl, and other videos that make me realize this game actually looks pretty gorgeous. You never really know how a game will look until you pop the game into a console and watch it run.

Re: Amazon Opens Pre-Orders For Super Smash Bros. GameCube Adapter and Controller Bundle

FlaygletheBagel

Not buying into the whole GC Controller thing right now honestly. The Pro Controller seems like it would work well enough to justify not getting a GC controller and adding 40 dollars onto the price tag of the game. With 2 Pro Controllers and 2 Classic Controller Pros, I'm sure my friends will be more than satisfied playing Smash.

Still glad the GC Controller is an option though.

Re: The Trending #WiiUDroughtAid Shows That, Actually, There's Plenty to Play on Wii U

FlaygletheBagel

I have a bad habit of starting games but not finishing them. I have a huge list of games I've started but never finished, and that even includes classics like Super Metroid, Majoras Mask, Earthbound, and Link to the Past that I missed out on when I was growing up. While I'm not particularly a fan of the game drought, it does give me a chance to work on finishing those games. My backlog spans wayyyy back!

Re: Nintendo of America Confirms Wii U Virtual Console Titles For Next Two Weeks

FlaygletheBagel

I love Nintendo, and because I love them, I hate watching them make weird decisions that don't capitalize on the power they're capable of. Their E3 was brilliant, and I'm glad they're finally getting in touch with what excites their customers. But the area I'm always consistently baffled by, and the one area I feel needs improvement above anything else, is their Virtual Console. They're sitting on a treasure trove of great titles, but they only trickle out 0-1 decent titles a week. This week was different, fortunately, and granted, I understand the trickle-out strategy from a business standpoint, as it creates more demand around their already scarce and high quality titles, but geez, the least they could do is put games out at a similar rate to the Wii's VC. The Wii U is so far behind where the Wii was at this point in its life cycle that it hurts.

Anyway, there are better things to do with my time than complain about this. I just hope Nintendo's forthright and aggressive attitude at E3 eventually carries over into how they treat their Virtual Console.

Re: Nintendo's At It Again With Another Majora's Mask Tease

FlaygletheBagel

Eh, I don't think it's actually going to be a remake. If it is a remake, I think Nintendo will add some new twists to the formula. I think the unannounced 3DS Zelda title will feature Majoras Mask and will maybe even take place in Termina, but will be an entirely new Zelda game. Sort of like Link Between Worlds shared similar concepts with Link to the Past, but was very different and fresh.

I doubt we'll see a straight up remake, but I fully expect to see Majoras Mask in the next 3DS Zelda; I'd actually prefer it if they added some new twists to the formula anyway.
