We're getting ever closer to the release of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, with its Wii U counterpart due in the Holiday season. While we can certainly gauge plenty of hype and anticipation within the community of dedicated Nintendo fans, the secret to the success of both titles will be in generating excitement among gamers of all types, whether devoted to all-things Nintendo or not.
There's some positive news on that score, with the Super Smash Bros. titles now confirmed to have secured the Gamescom Most Wanted Consumer Award. Votes opened on 9th August via the event's Facebook page, while there have been voting facilities available at the event itself.
It's an impressive win for the games, especially as Gamescom is the biggest gaming expo event in Europe and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. It's a massive event, and it seems Nintendo's booth and the excitement around Super Smash Bros. has secured a particularly positive public endorsement from those in attendance in Cologne.
It certainly bodes well ahead of these games arriving in the coming months. Nintendo is also in the running for some other Gamescom awards — chosen by a jury — with results due soon.

Let's be honest here. This really isn't a surprise
I know I want it.
Wow it beat all the other games announced on gamescom?That's awesome and now we know this game is going to be a system seller for both versions of the game.
But...but Nintendo is DOOMED!!
I know I don't want it.
I can't say this is really that surprising.
@Ryno Dude, that's BS.
Rather surprising given that this is Europe we're talking about. I was expecting something like Halo Master Chief collection, CoD Advanced Warfare or Evolve to win that. Congrats to Nintendo for keeping the hype up and I hope that translates to hardware sales.
@Hy8ogen: It's true bruh, I really have no interest in Smash.
I've already got mine on reserve. Planning on using my next paycheck to pay it off.
And so it should be!
I've spent a total of maybe almost £250 on video games this year and the only one I really care about is SM4SH.
@Hy8ogen @Ryno
I have to admit, it's not a day one purchase for me either.
Glad I pre-ordered the 3DS version. Bring on October 3rd.
Sounds good to me.
@Nintenjoe64 @Ryno If you guys are not fighting game fans it's understandable. This will be my first smash games and I'm looking forward to it!
@Hy8ogen: I'm not a huge fighting fan unless its Street Fighter II (played that a lot as a kid) though I would probably get Street Fighter IV if that game came to the U.
Oh snap! That's pretty impressive, considering the combination of the poor sales of the Wii U and the higher popularity of titles like Halo and Fifa in Europe. Though I think the 3DS version may have played a big part in this success story.
Eh, I'll probably get it because my siblings have been pestering me and since I have some vague interest. I'm still mostly disappointed by the lack of impact this game is having on me compared to past games. Instead of being an exciting new entry, so far it feels like more of the same...and not in a good way.
Anyway I'll still get it since it's like a Nintendo tradition, however it'll depend on if I have any money left after getting Neptunia Re;birth 1 for Vita, Hyrule Warriors for Wii U, and Omega Ruby for 3DS. And then there's some other Vita games I've been wanting like Akiba's Trip.
@Ryno Reminds me of the awful blisters I got playing Street Fighter and King of Fighters 98. Shame that King of Fighters is pretty much dead now. I prefered it over Street Fighter tbh.
@Hy8ogen
I have to say I enjoyed the King of Fighters XIII a lot, and that is not that old.
I was going to buy Smash 4 Wii U with it being my first Smash game. I skipped the Wii and Gamecube (and I missed out on it for N64 because I wasn't sure if it would be good). Unfortunately for my wallet, I'll have to double dip and buy the 3DS version as well, because Nintendo Store UK has a bundle deal where you get Smash 4 3DS, a special Smash T-Shirt, and Wristband for £40 (and the game's normal price will probably be £35-£40) and I'm a sucker for preorder bonuses.
@brewsky It's a surprise to me.
@sinalefa It is actually. KOF usually have a new game every 1~2 years but it's been 4 years since XIII. I hope this series will be getting a new version soon ;(
Amazing how this humble little site has these great Nintendo related scoops, and the big game media sites like IGN are either slow to report them or just flat out skip the stories altogether.
Kudos Nintendo Life team...for providing solid Nintendo coverage.
@Hy8ogen
I just checked and you are right. I still would prefer to have one every three years or so, as the yearly installments felt like overkill in the Neo Geo. I would love to see a sequel to Garou as well.
I'm honestly not a big Smash Bros fan.
The first and only Smash I ever played was Brawl...and I ended up liking the platform "Embassy mission" segments the most and finding the actual fighting game kinda boring.
@Ryno I usually let it slide when people say they don't like a certain game everyone else is crazy for, like me and Donkey Kong; we just don't like each other. But THIS? There is something seriously wrong with you.
Will this really be the game to save the WiiU? I sure hope so. You've got my contribution hopefully others will follow. I'm buying the 3ds version too just to see what its like. I really hope its not too uncomfortable on a standard 3ds screen. People say that even on the XL its a bit jarring to focus on everything onscreen.
I think there was an issue w/ the translation and SSB U was actually voted: "game people most want a release date for"
As for Day 1, well I actually need to know what day that is. If it's close to Christmas and its going under the tree no rush, but if it's early Nov and we can have it for Thanskgiving weekend then we'll get it. Unless it comes out close to Bayonetta 2 which we still don't have a date for. Or Captain Toad Treasure Tracker comes out really close to Christmas then Santa can leave us that and we'll buy SSB U Day 1. But only if Captain Toad gets his own amiibo, and the amiibo are released around SSB U, whenever that is.
I know I am always on here complaining about release dates and you are all sick of it, but sometimes there is a reason I want to know, not just to know, ya know.
Great win for Super Smash Bros. 4, now let's hope October and whatever that holiday release date for Wii U is, comes soon.
Tiny bit of negativity: am I the only one who absolutely LOATHES the "for 3DS" and "for Wii U" names? I dunno, it seems so soulless to spell out the platform name like that, instead of attaching the SSB name to a more evocative word like Brawl or Melee.
@Ryno If you really aren't trolling, I must give you respect for the balls you have to say that and mean it. An odd thing to dislike, as well as an odd thing to be up-in-arms about someone disliking it. WE're a weird community.
I want it soooooooooo bad.
@Ryno
No offense, but WHY ARE YOU SO BACKWARDS ON EVERYTHING!? Every one of your opinions is not with the majority. Although I admire that, it is a little strange.
@ricklongo While I do agree that I would prefer more interesting names, I do understand why they named them the way they did. They were named that way to differentiate between the two versions, and to make it easier for the average consumer to understand.
Think about it this way: If they had given the games the same name - Like Super Smash Bros. Scuffle (which is a terrible name, but bear with me), then that would be a little misleading, because while the games do share the same roster and items, they are very different in other areas, like stages, game modes, trophies, challenges, and so on. Buying one version of Scuffle doesn't give you the same content as the other, and that could be confusing to the average consumer.
Meanwhile if you name them with different catchy names, like Super Smash Bros. Universe and Super Smash Bros. Scuffle, I can see how that could cause the opposite problem with the average consumer. Because then people might think the games are entirely different, even though the roster and items are shared between versions.
Wii U and 3DS may not be the most catchy or great names, but they are simple and serve their purpose. There's no confusion there - When you pick up Smash 3DS, you know you're getting the only Smash Bros. game on 3DS. Same with Wii U. So yeah, I totally agree that the "for Wii U" and "for 3DS" titles are kinda uninteresting, but I do see why they decided on them.
@Hy8ogen SNK play more has renewed the KOF license. Not sure if they are still recruiting more people to work on the game, but it has been confirmed (for a while now) they are indeed working on a new KOF game. This time with 3d models. Whether or not it's in the same vein as in Guilty Gear Xrd (actual 3d models on a 2d plane) or Tekken. Either way, it's being made.
@Hy8ogen I like my fighting games whether 2D or 3D.Soul Calibur 2 on Dreamcast was my favourite but I just cant get into SSB at all.I had Melee and Brawl and found them rather disappointing.I'm willing to give the Wii U version a try at some time as it does look good (although the graphics not so much) and I'm sure the Online will be vastly improved from the mess that was brawl's.I've got a feeling the 3DS version is gonna disappoint a lot of people though.
@sinalefa Garou ftw. Clearly one of the most underrated fighting games of all time, in my opinion. I would be so happy if it got a sequel.
To the people who don't care about Smash Bros.: Why did you comment on this article? This saddens me.
y dont u peple liek fun gaems?
@ricklongo I didn't realise that was the final names.Yep I agree,doesn't sound great.SSB 3D and SSB U would have been better and still avoided any confusion.
@Hernandez Apparently Splatoon beat Smash for best Wii U game at Gamescom.
@ricklongo They should at least add a four
Super Smash Bros 4 3D
Super Smash Bros 4 U
@Ryno me neither. totally not interested a bit
@FlaygletheBagel -" to make it easier for the average consumer to understand."
I wonder how many of the average consumer will wonder if the "for 3DS" version will work on the 2DS their kid has?
@Splatom - ooh, I like the 4, I'm always up for a play on words, and the inside of the smashball on the cover kind of looks like a 4. Its almost too good for them not to use it.
@Nintendo_Ninja - Ryno is in his mid 30's, its an akward age
@rjejr Who knows? Hopefully most people buying a 2DS for their kids have read the box it comes in, and understand that it plays 3DS games. Plus you can't fault whoever came up with the Smash Bros. names for any confusion that comes up over a dumb name like the 2DS. Two separate committees.
@Excep7ional
I loved Garou as I loved Real Bout (that is a lot) and I was bummed that the Rock story was left unfinished. Nice to hear about another KOF being made, though.
For it's parent company's relative quiteness during the event, I'd say that is is a big positive for the Big N.
@sinalefa Agreed, Seeing as how Rock was one of my main characters I used, I would love to see where his story goes. Maybe they will bring him inside the new installment of KOF.
@AVahne smash bros is more of the same and a pokemon remake is not?
I guess I've never unsterstood how people can buy a new pokemon game every year, let alone the remakes,
@IceClimbers That's very promising that the hype for Splatoon continues!
This is good news for the future prospects of the Wii U. This could be the start of a steady climb towards respectable lifetime sales for the console...and this time there's going to be a regular stream of 1st party games following to keep the sales momentum going.
go you good thing!
Most wanted game for me is Silent Hills... don't care for SSB all that much
@Hy8ogen KoF XIII on Steam is pretty great and I'm pretty sure the community is still strong..
As for Smash winning... It deserves it!!
This comments section makes me very sad.
On our way back from Gamescom right now!
So many people, insane waiting lines, 240 minute wait for Smash Bros! Didn't get to chance to play anything at the Nintendo or other boots for that matter. Lots of people at Gamescom but absolutely too little capacity at the boots :s Especially Nintendo, compared to the like 100 pc's at Blizzard booth, Nintendo had like 25 Wii U's Still had a great day with friends though
@SockoMario
I feel the same, I didn't know that there's that much people who doesn't care about Smash. Whatever, for me its the most anticipated game of this year as MK8 was also
@Ryno
MOM, SOMEONE IS LYING ON THE INTERNET!
I never owned a smash game. But this is the most anticipated game for me as well. I bought a wii u mainly because of this game. Which in turn made me buy mario kart 8 with free pikmin 3, mario 3d world, mh3u (have it on 3ds first) and tekken tag. Its my main console after my pc gaming rig and 3ds.
I'm late with the replies but here goes:
@reali-tglitch: Not trying to troll, I just am one of the few Nintendo fans that cannot wait for the Smash hype to go away. We are a weird community indeed.
@Nintendo_Ninja: Ha, thanks I guess? I like to think that some of my opinions are "different" instead of backwards.
@Alucard83: There are a few of us that aren't crazy over Smash, nice to meet another.
I bought a 3DS for this a few weeks ago. On the upside I've gotten to play other great games on the 3DS while waiting for it this summer.
