I'm not sure why people are complaining. If you've ever had any desire to develop games, what better addition to your portfolio than a finished game that was basically your design idea. If I wasn't friends with Jools, I'd be entering this competition myself.
I have to be honest with you, while I know there's no way the game is going to look anywhere nearly as slick as the Vita game, I'm extremely excited about the prospect of playing the game with that 3D depth. But I would rather them get it all polished up before releasing it, so the wait isn't too much of a killer.
Great review Tom. I've been at this game all morning and I can't put it down. Xenoblade and Kid Icarus: Uprising on the same day. I may never leave the house again.
After the absolutely stunning Vita version of the game, I'd rather them get this 3DS version right. I'm really looking forward to playing the game in 3D depth and using the 3DS d-pad. But it's gonna be a long wait until June.
It's more about losing your confidence with gamers and publishers than money sometimes. Nintendo has done a fantastic job of injecting new life into the 3DS and they need to knock one out of the park with Wii U to get the third-party developers and publishers on board.
Thanks for the tip TeeJay, but Tyrone told me it was coming the other day. So I was checking my 3DS fairly regularly. But we do appreciate the news tips. Keep 'em coming man.
The bottom line is that we want as much of the money to go into the developer and publisher pockets. That's good for the industry and in turn, good for us gamers. And if that in turn saves gamers some money along the way, then it's icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.
Indeed Des. And we just saw Motorstorm RC released as a download-only title after it was considered to be a retail release and it was only $10. In fact, it was free for early buyers, but that's exactly the kind of savings we need to see in order to entice gamers to go digital. As I said earlier, the 10% off in the PSN store right now isn't enough for most people.
I agree 100% Des, publishers and developers do need to pass some of that affordability on to the consumers as well and will have to if they expect gamers to give up the physical copies of games to purchase the download version. Ten percent isn't enough of a bargain, especially when these developers and publishers are saving quite a bit more money by going the digital route.
But as long as we see publishers still providing retail copies of games, as most of the digital download Vita titles still alternatively provide, I doubt we'll see a lot of savings passed onto digital buyers as those publishers are still having to provide the retail packaging and still taking quite a risk at retail. Perhaps when we finally do reach a totally digital level, the savings will then be passed on more substantially. I hope so, at least.
PSPgo failed because idiot Sony only made about 1/4 of the PSP library available for download and many of the new titles (Kingdom Hearts) wasn't even made available brand new for download. Sony has a deal in place that makes every Vita title released available for download.
And I also see physical media in video games pretty much completely gone within the next 5-10 years. It's coming, especially as the number of households with fast internet connections continues to grow. It's just too cost-effective for developers and publishers and allows companies to take more chances with less risk.
That is a bit nitpicky. While you're correct about the use of digital, it's kind of become the understood way of describing the downloads in recent years so until the word usage police actually cite me, I'm sticking with it.
Great to see Nintendo get the 3DS really selling. I'm sure that 1/3 price drop was tough to swallow at first, but it was obviously the right thing to do. And of course Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 didn't hurt much either.
I don't like challenges in video games, as a general rule, that cannot be avoided or beaten. To me, that's not much fun and that's how I categorize the blue shells in Mario Kart. I want a game that requires skill, not luck.
This was one of those games that absolutely blew me away back when it was first released on the NES. And it stayed sold out in stores for weeks. Still fun as hell.
@tealovertoma - I can certainly understand Team Meat not releasing Super Meat Boy on WiiWare given the strict file size limitation, but what I cannot understand is them not releasing SMB on 3DS or even allowing another developer to develop and release it. That kinda bums me out.
If we've learned anything from the 3DS, it's that sales of game systems can turn on a dime. A big title here, a price drop there, and it starts selling. Don't forget, it was 3DS publishers that were backing off the system just a few short months ago when all of the 3DS doom and gloom was going on. This race has just started, in fact hasn't even fully begun since the Vita still needs to officially launch in NA and EU. We've got a long way to go peeps. Sit back and relax.
I never tire of all of this doom and gloom stuff, especially before a system has even officially launched around the world. I'm hearing now that Vita and 3DS developers are jumping ship to the PlayStation 5. They're skipping over PlayStation 4 altogether. They heard it wasn't going to sell very well I guess. LOL

Awww that's a shame. I was hoping this would be good. Guess I'll just wait for the Final Fantasy rhythm game to hit stateside. Great review Big Phil.
Re: pitchWinPLAY Competition Announced
@TwilightV - Wow, I didn't know anyone over the age of 18 didn't have a debit card.

Wow, so this awards show is basically the video game equivalent of our Grammys. Makes sense now.

I plan on spending some hefty hours tonight playing this baby. Been waiting a long time for this game.

I really enjoyed Nano Assault, but there will always be a part of me that longs for a new Nano Stray game on 3DS. Great review Phil!
Re: Rumour: Donkey Kong 3D Swinging Into View
I'm betting this is a 3DS 3D port of Donkey Kong Country Returns. In fact, I'd probably bet a lot on it.
Re: Review: Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa's Revenge (Wii Virtual Console / Neo Geo)
I still prefer Samurai Shodown II and I, but this one isn't too shabby.

I'm going 100% digital with Vita and all 19 of my launch titles are on the memory stick. We'll see how this experiment goes.

Perhaps Nintendo is still ticked about them deciding not to release Super Meat Boy on WiiWare after it did so well on XBLA.

I'm currently attempting to go an entire 3DS generation without StreetPassing anyone. So far, so good.
Re: Can You Complete Super Mario Bros. In Under Five Minutes?
I've done it in 7, but I'd have to work on it to get it down to under 5 minutes. Yikes.

Nintendo Life is getting a bit of an upgrade as well.
Re: Feature: The Joy of Gaming Together

Guys, it might be a couple of months before you see Mutant Mudds in EU, at the very least.
Re: Review: 3DS Circle Pad Pro
I'm buying one just so I can douse it in gasoline and set it on fire. YouTube video to follow.
Re: Review: 3DS Circle Pad Pro
Oh the 3DS revision is coming. And a second analog stick it will have. Mark it down.
Re: Review: 3DS Circle Pad Pro
No way that thing ever touches my 3DS systems. I might pick up the new model that includes it, but not this clunky thing. Sheesh. LOL
