Re: Feature: Fire Emblem And 8 Other Nintendo Franchises That Need A TV Series

ComradeThom

I know this is a silly article written with silly intent, but honestly I generally dismay when people say any piece of art 'needs' to be translated into a different medium. I find more often than not, the medium that produced the piece is integral to why and how it came to be and changing that medium misunderstands what made the source so successful in the first place.

Thats not to say you don't get interesting work by exploring a text with a different medium but by no means does it 'need' to be done.

Re: Sega Denies It Has Anything To Do With Crazy Taxi Clone Taxi Chaos

ComradeThom

There seems to be confusion in some comments about copyright or plagiarism. There is no copyright infringement or ability to sue for 'plagiarism' by simply releasing a game with a similar theme, story or even mechanics. The only potentially issue which could lead to letigation is falsely naming Sega as a distributer, which could probably be settled by a public statement from the developers of this game.

Re: Review: Calico - Bursting With Heart, But Crippled By Bugs

ComradeThom

@Megotchi I'm sorry but I have to correct you. Cripple etymologically derives from the old english "Crypel" which translates to mean 'one who limps or one partly/wholly deprived of the use of one or more limbs'.

It has always been a slur about disabled people and having grown up with severely disabled family members, I have the lived experience of the impact of the word.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Buying The Cloud Version Of Hitman 3 On Nintendo Switch?

ComradeThom

I'm not the sort of person to discard a book I love, I'll keep it on my bookshelves forever and maybe return to it from time to time. Likewise I'm not the sort of person to discard a game I love, and would resent falling in love with something only for it to be ripped away in the future.

If your mindset is that games are a consumer good to be consumed and once finished, move onto the next product for consumption, the threat of not actually owning the game but essentially long term renting it through cloud gaming will not be a concern. Thats is a totally legitimate take to have.

However seeing video games as a medium of art on a par with movies, paintings, albums, etc... means that having continued tangible access to games to re-experience them, maybe in a new context or with a different mindset, is something invaluable.

Thats why I cannot buy into cloud gaming.

Re: Random: What's Worse Than Getting Another 'Legacy Edition?' FIFA 21's Box Art, Apparently

ComradeThom

I've no interest in football or football games, but... I actually think this design is refreshing breathe of fresh air. Just because something isn't conventional, doesn't make it bad. Its far more interesting than the typical, single male protagonist photo stretched across the entire canvas + logo text.

I'm a graphic designer who has worked on projects in the entertainment industry, but of course differing valid opinions are available.

Re: Activision Says It's Evaluating Additional Platforms For Crash Bandicoot 4

ComradeThom

@HappyMaskedGuy: "In all honesty, you can keep it."

Really? You are going to argue against the Switch receiving a prominent 3rd party game with high production values? That isn't so much anti-Crash, its anti-Switch.

I don't like Animal Crossing. I can't stand them. But do I regret New Horizons' release on the Switch? Hell no. Big budget games with good sales figures releasing on the Switch creates the sustainable eco-system which attracts small and medium size developers to develop for it. No Animal Crossing or Breath of the Wild = Fewer interesting indie games on the platform.

Arguing against a game like Crash 4 to come to the Switch because the game doesn't suit your own subjective personal tastes is very silly and really quite petty.

Hopefully Crash 4 comes to the Switch, not just because its good for Crash fans, but because its good for the Switch as a platform.

Re: Japanese Game Director Swery Will Rewrite At Least One Scene In Deadly Premonition 2

ComradeThom

@JHDK so anyone who uses the latin term 'cis' which means 'on this side of' isnt worth listening to? So experts and peer reviewed scientists arent worth listening to.

Maybe it is wrong to trust doctors who use the recognised medical terminology, but I'm pretty damn sure they are a better source of information than the unqualified slack jawed capital 'G' gamers who get upset by anything that they dont recognise in their limited life experiences.

Have a good day, ignoring experts and continuing in a blissful cloud of ignorance.

Re: Game Originally Planned For Wii U, Then Switch, Winds Up As A PS5 Timed-Exclusive

ComradeThom

As frustrating as it must be for the game's original backers, I'm relieved it's only a timed exclusive as it implies that this game will eventually make the jump to Switch.

In regards to the removing of stereotypes in the enemy characters from the game's trailer, I'm very impressed that the developer was mature enough to listen, learn and in doing so make better informed creative choices and improve their game.

SQWs (Status quo warriors) lack creative vision, that's why they arent interested in learning and lean so heavily on boring overused stereotypes.

Re: Nintendo New York Store Windows Smashed During Riots In Manhattan

ComradeThom

RIP George Floyd and millions of our black siblings killed around the world by white supremacy and neoliberal capitalism.

And solidarity with those who get caught in the crossfire, like the workers of this Nintendo store who dont have somewhere to go to earn their living tomorow.

The systemic oppression of any hurts us all.

Re: Ninty Fresh Aims To Relive The Glory Days Of Nintendo Print Magazines

ComradeThom

I'm amazed that many in the same subculture who espouse the virtues of collecting physical cartridges and disks dont value physical print media. The reason you buy physical print magazines is partially for the exclusive articles and content, but more importantly the experience of the magazine medium. The combination of curated pictures, typographic decisions and editorial design to culminate in a reading experience you dont just consume but you enjoy.

Yes internet news will always be more conveinant, but legacy media like magazines arent competing on convenience, they are offering something altogether different.

That's why I happily have backed this project.
