I know this is a silly article written with silly intent, but honestly I generally dismay when people say any piece of art 'needs' to be translated into a different medium. I find more often than not, the medium that produced the piece is integral to why and how it came to be and changing that medium misunderstands what made the source so successful in the first place.
Thats not to say you don't get interesting work by exploring a text with a different medium but by no means does it 'need' to be done.
I play my Switch out and about far more than I ever played the DS. A portable console which requires a stylus always struck me as unwieldy and unnatural for playing on the go.
Great article. I think its important to note that games media also needs to priortise diversity with its voices. Notably Nintendo Life's on screen talent on its youtube channel are all white men. I don't say this as an aggressive 'gotcha' but just a reminder that we all need to do better.
Why cant I find the carry case on UK amazon anywhere?
The UK is one of the biggest markets for Crash but Activison is rewarding us with no physical release and seemingly no way to get the themed peripherals.
Oh look major corporation runs roughshod over the interests and safety of the workers which generate its wealth.
Its almost like this whole economic system of companies being dictatorships where the bosses make the decisions and the workers either follow them or lose their living, is like broken or something?
Lots of people being snarky about this article, but do you really think a news site about all things Nintendo should not post about what major news outlets are reporting on for future Nintendo products? I mean I think the skepticism is healthy but its totally appropriate for Nintendo Life to cover what the mainstream news are saying about the company.
Tbh I dont feel like the joycons have a wide variety of colours, and even those that break the mold dont come as a pair, instead horribly clashing like the purple and orange, green and pink and even the original red and blue.
There seems to be confusion in some comments about copyright or plagiarism. There is no copyright infringement or ability to sue for 'plagiarism' by simply releasing a game with a similar theme, story or even mechanics. The only potentially issue which could lead to letigation is falsely naming Sega as a distributer, which could probably be settled by a public statement from the developers of this game.
Any civilisation that cannot cope with children knowing its possible for two people to love each other is one whose underpinning is as fragile as it is pitiful.
I'd rather they put their time into developing more unique online games like Tetris 99 rather than porting ancient games with little to no value to anyone outside of a retro gaming niche interest.
I wouldn't be surprised if after being burned by previous late releases of Activison remasters on Switch, alot of people who would have bought the PS4/Xbox version otherwise are holding out for a Switch release on Crash 4.
@Megotchi I'm sorry but I have to correct you. Cripple etymologically derives from the old english "Crypel" which translates to mean 'one who limps or one partly/wholly deprived of the use of one or more limbs'.
It has always been a slur about disabled people and having grown up with severely disabled family members, I have the lived experience of the impact of the word.
Woah Nintendo Life, please don't use the word "crippled" as you have done in the headline for this review on the homepage. Its a deeply upsetting anti disabled slur.
I'm not the sort of person to discard a book I love, I'll keep it on my bookshelves forever and maybe return to it from time to time. Likewise I'm not the sort of person to discard a game I love, and would resent falling in love with something only for it to be ripped away in the future.
If your mindset is that games are a consumer good to be consumed and once finished, move onto the next product for consumption, the threat of not actually owning the game but essentially long term renting it through cloud gaming will not be a concern. Thats is a totally legitimate take to have.
However seeing video games as a medium of art on a par with movies, paintings, albums, etc... means that having continued tangible access to games to re-experience them, maybe in a new context or with a different mindset, is something invaluable.
I know everything about this project and product sucks, however can we all just take a moment to appreciate that fine lookin' piece of industrial design.
I've no interest in football or football games, but... I actually think this design is refreshing breathe of fresh air. Just because something isn't conventional, doesn't make it bad. Its far more interesting than the typical, single male protagonist photo stretched across the entire canvas + logo text.
I'm a graphic designer who has worked on projects in the entertainment industry, but of course differing valid opinions are available.
@HappyMaskedGuy: "In all honesty, you can keep it."
Really? You are going to argue against the Switch receiving a prominent 3rd party game with high production values? That isn't so much anti-Crash, its anti-Switch.
I don't like Animal Crossing. I can't stand them. But do I regret New Horizons' release on the Switch? Hell no. Big budget games with good sales figures releasing on the Switch creates the sustainable eco-system which attracts small and medium size developers to develop for it. No Animal Crossing or Breath of the Wild = Fewer interesting indie games on the platform.
Arguing against a game like Crash 4 to come to the Switch because the game doesn't suit your own subjective personal tastes is very silly and really quite petty.
Hopefully Crash 4 comes to the Switch, not just because its good for Crash fans, but because its good for the Switch as a platform.
@JHDK so anyone who uses the latin term 'cis' which means 'on this side of' isnt worth listening to? So experts and peer reviewed scientists arent worth listening to.
Maybe it is wrong to trust doctors who use the recognised medical terminology, but I'm pretty damn sure they are a better source of information than the unqualified slack jawed capital 'G' gamers who get upset by anything that they dont recognise in their limited life experiences.
Have a good day, ignoring experts and continuing in a blissful cloud of ignorance.
@JHDK Totally agree, all these cis-gendered gamers are so sensitive, whinging and crying about minor changes in a video game of all things which will make all the difference to trans people and zero difference to them. Total snowflakes. They should just suck it up and move on with their lives.
Before the screaming man babies of the world start crying 'censorship'; listening to marginalised groups to improve your representation of them is a creative artistic decision which makes games infinitely better. That's not censorship, that's called being a responsible functioning adult.
Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary identities are valid.
I feel uncomfortable that this article was published without any reference to the sexual assault and cover-up allegations backdrop against which this Ubisoft marketing event took place.
Its outrageous that you can't get a device which you own, not Nintendo, modified without big business' bully boy lawyers knocking on the door. Piracy happens at the point the games are stolen and distributed, not if your device has been modified in a way that might be used to play pirated games.
When I click through to each of the items it says all of these are currently unavailable? I'm based in the UK, does that not count as part of the European region or are they all sold out or something?
As frustrating as it must be for the game's original backers, I'm relieved it's only a timed exclusive as it implies that this game will eventually make the jump to Switch.
In regards to the removing of stereotypes in the enemy characters from the game's trailer, I'm very impressed that the developer was mature enough to listen, learn and in doing so make better informed creative choices and improve their game.
SQWs (Status quo warriors) lack creative vision, that's why they arent interested in learning and lean so heavily on boring overused stereotypes.
I hope this makes it to the switch. I love games which explore different art styles and reference other cultural aesthetics which arent typically used in the medium.
RIP George Floyd and millions of our black siblings killed around the world by white supremacy and neoliberal capitalism.
And solidarity with those who get caught in the crossfire, like the workers of this Nintendo store who dont have somewhere to go to earn their living tomorow.
Could this just be a placeholder for Little Nightmares 2, which has already been confirmed for the Switch but no release date other than vaguely '2020'?
I'm amazed that many in the same subculture who espouse the virtues of collecting physical cartridges and disks dont value physical print media. The reason you buy physical print magazines is partially for the exclusive articles and content, but more importantly the experience of the magazine medium. The combination of curated pictures, typographic decisions and editorial design to culminate in a reading experience you dont just consume but you enjoy.
Yes internet news will always be more conveinant, but legacy media like magazines arent competing on convenience, they are offering something altogether different.
