Update: More than a year since they first appeared (and immediately sold out), the Super Mario Hanafuda cards are back in stock on the My Nintendo Store.
They're available for £22.50 plus shipping and can be purchased below from the My Nintendo Store. Sadly, the Zelda and Splatoon cards haven't returned at the time of writing.
If you're keen on the Mario set, though, we'd suggest you get on this pretty fast!

Original Article (Tue 16th Jun, 2020 12:00 BST): Nintendo has just released a new batch of lovely physical goods on its My Nintendo website in Europe, including Hanafuda and standard playing cards based on its most popular franchises. They fittingly arrive just after the launch of Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics on Switch.
You can check out the whole collection for yourself right here [Update – link now invalid]. You'll find a number of sets of playing cards based on Mario, Zelda, Kirby and Splatoon, a President Hanafuda pack, and two Mario Hanafuda packs.
As you may know, Nintendo first started out as a manufacturer of hanafuda cards way back in 1889, so this is a nice little throwback to the company's early history. It's a traditional Japanese card game that dates back to the 1500s (you can see the rules of the game here).
Each product is exclusive to My Nintendo members and comes with an additional shipping fee. If you're ordering from Germany, shipping will cost 3,99€, while shipping to any other European country costs 6,99€.
A Mario Hanafuda postcard set is also available for 400 Platinum Points plus shipping costs.
What do you think? Are you tempted to grab a pack? We imagine these are in very limited supply, so you probably want to act fast.

£14.50 for the playing cards!?
I've always wanted these.
But not at that price 😂
If these are like the original club nintendo ones then they are entirely made out of plastic, which is odd, but at least means the cards won't be damaged.
@syrupdash it shows €25 for me?
(Edit: It seems different variants have different prices)
Please let these come to NA, I just learned Hanafuda in Clubhouse and I’m addicted
Shame its not the same mario style as standard deck in clubhouse games
£15 for the Splatoon cards plus £7 postage. Seems like a bargain to me 🙃
Ouch, way too expensive.
I went on there to buy these immediately, I've always wanted some Nintendo hanafuda cards and would've gone for the Zelda cards too but I can't justify that price, even for a collectible, maybe they'll go on sale like the NES controllers did?
I got a nice couple of decks of cards for free - free as in no $ plus free shipping - from Club Nintendo. 1 is a sort of see through shiny plastic and 1 makes a giant parade puzzle. The good ole days. sigh
When actually playing playing cards, any themed design is just annoying.
Yeah.. way to expensive. Sorry Nintendo.
I was down for buying a bunch until I saw the price and postage fees.
Or these really rare ones from the 60’s...

@rjejr I have those clear and metallic cards too! Plus an older set of Mario Hanafuda cards, both entirely free.
They do look really nice to have. Buuuuut... paying £14.50 plus postage for themed-playing cards that are more likely to suffer wear and tear from using is a hard pill to swallow.
Picking up a pack of the hanafuda and playing cards (although agree they're a bit expensive). Site is very slow though - won't seem to process my payment!
Good luck getting them as Nintendo's website is struggling, as usual, to keep up with demand. Been trying for 20 minutes to get through checkout.
It's the shipping that puts me off.. :/
I remember getting Mario hanafuda cards for just a few Nintendo points way back when.
@rjejr Agreed. I remember when Nintendo got rid of Club Nintendo and they promised its successor would be an improvement. So untrue!
Does anyone know if any of those temporary credit card numbers would work on this? I don't have a credit card (and I refuse to get one) but I would like to get these if possible. ..well, SOME of these, because damn those prices.
@Yosher They work exactly credit cards, so in theory they should work fine. Pretty sure Nintendo accept VISA & Mastercard. I can't even get through to checkout though at the mo, so you may want to try in a bit.
@sikthvash Thank you! I will give it a shot then. But yeah I noticed the site having issues. I did put my items into the shopping basket at least but I'll keep them there and wait until later. Good luck to you on getting them for that matter.. and to anyone else trying of course! Hope the site will let us get them eventually.
@Ogbert I still don't know what hanafuda is.
@XiaoShao Yeah, Nintnedo says a lot of things.
can't proceed to checkout. Usual nintendo *****
@Yosher it wiped all my basket contents out on the 9th try, but I put them all back in & I've successfully bought now ^_^
@Cero Yeh, had that issue since I saw this post, but I've literally just managed to purchase. I' had to start again from scratch - this worked for me.
Finally! A good use of the Platinum Points! Too bad I live in America
These have been on sale in shops in Japan for years. I've got the Kirby ones. They're about half the price, too. This is a scam.
@sikthvash maybe I managed too, but failed on the thank you page, refreshed a lot and eventually got the email and the page confirming it.
Very bad use of magento, dear nintendo
Add import fees etc. to Norway, and we’re talking about €60. No thanks.
Been trying for an hour and it just keeps returning an error / emptying my cart. How frustrating.
I played Hanafuda in clubhouse games ds, and I really want it!
I was genuinely intrigued that My Nintendo actually has physical rewards....Then I continued reading and remembered I live on a different continent.
physical rewards but only in europe huh? well its a start on making mynintendo compelling again
Wish this was available in the US for the sole reason of being able to put my platinum coins into something instead of watching them slowly march one by one to wards their expiration.
Would love it but out of my price range
Too pricey for me, would get otherwise.
Despite how pricey they seem, I would have absolutely cracked and bought these. Australians don’t have the luxury, though.
Meanwhile in America...
NoA needs to get its act together. Has anyone redeemed anything from mynintendo? I forgot it even existed until this article was made. All NoA has are things for the phone games or 30% discounts for 3DS/Wii U games. It almost looks abandoned.
Hell, there isn't even anything for the Wii U on there. Just mislabeled sections.
I tried to get them on my lunch break but the site was being useless. Hanafuda cards are used in one of the mini games in Yakuza.
Last comment I swear. I thought this said Zelda Hanafuda deck. It is just a normal Zelda deck. One I think I already have. I already have one of the Mario Hanafuda decks from back when NoA had these in Club Nintendo (Ahh the good old days). The Zelda deck would be nice, but Nintendo's playing cards are usually not actually good for playing with. I have a few from either the Nintendo Store or Club Nintendo. Although this is cool, it's probably them trying to get rid of things leftover in one of their warehouses.
I was going to buy several of these from the Nintendo World Store during my honeymoon last year until i got to the cashier and saw the prices. In the end I just got one set of Hanafuda cards. $25 was still steep but I could argue one set as a Honeymoon gift......then I went to Video Games New York and spent around $600
I have the zelda ones already that I imported from Japan years ago.
@sikthvash Wonderful! Thank you for letting me know and congrats on your purchase!~
Good thing I bought both the Mario Hanafuda and Retro Art playing cards last time I was in Japan. Crazy that they can attempt to justify selling them at this price when they are many times cheaper in Asia
such nice playing cards, but why are they only available in Europe? why doesn't Nintendo have them available on their U.S. store web site?
Ultimately tried for four hours and one of the products ran out of stock before I could check it out.
Reminds me of the amiibo days!
Just compared the new Hanafuda cards to the old ones we were able to get with the old loyalty programm. The new ones have different pictures. But since i already have the old ones i have no need for these.
Not at this price.. Last week I imported a regular Nintendo Hanafuda set for 12€ from Japan..
I need the Kirby playing cards...too bad I Iive in the US...
When I click through to each of the items it says all of these are currently unavailable? I'm based in the UK, does that not count as
part of the European region or are they all sold out or something?
I ended up just getting the free postcard set but the postage was a high 6.25£
@ComradeThom they are all gone.
My girlfriend bought me those exact red Mario Hanafuda cards for my birthday last year. She imported them from Japan and she said she didnt pay that for them. If you want them, I suggest Ebay! 😄👌
Still went for the postcard pack though!
MNS0PNUBP-JL2P-O04O-YD2N, enjoy
I've always wanted a hanafuda deck! So... How about it coming to North America Nintendo?
Just ordered the post cards, the decks are all.sold.oit and way too expensive anyway...
@fox_mattcloud lol eBay Germany has super high prices right now! Not a good idea to buy it now
@DockEllisD
Is yours from Club Nintendo?
That's how I got mine and they are plastic.
That's surprising Nintendo of Europe is handling the cards. Typically, Nintendo Co just releases them direct to the market themselves without using their international marketing arms. Unless it relates to the video game properties, then maybe they handle them, but you can buy cards on Amazon that are directly from Nintendo in Kyoto.
I got my Original Club Nintendo Hanafuda cards at home, but i might be persuaded again....
Actually, nah mine are better
Will you let us know when Nintendo Germany will also start shipping these cards again please?
I want m, but Nintendo UK doesn’t ship to my country sadly.
as always NoA sucks and doesn't have them.
I'd kill for a Pokemon set, or even Fire Emblem. Not really big on a Mario theme or Splatoon
And NONE of it will come by retail to US/NA buyers but only by eBay SCALPERS.
God i want splatoon hanafuda
@syrupdash
I own several Nintendo decks, both playing card and hanafuda. Their stuff is certainly a quality tier above the Bicycles of the world, and Bicycle makes decent cards.
@SwitchForce
Mario Hanafuda have been available in the us store.nintendo.com for several monthlong stretches in the past year. You're just not keeping up with it.
These remind of the 3ds them
@Dr_Shellshock The cards are never out of stock on eBay!
A replica deck of Nintendo's original playing cards from the 1900s would be much more interesting to me.
Not like it makes them any less awesome, but these are reprints way longer then a year ago. I've had the Hanafuda cards for at least 8 years from a My Nintendo reward, and got the Splatoon cards from the New York Nintendo store last time I was stateside ... so maybe late 2015?
I hope everyone who wants them manages to get them!
@Prizm
I mean ... this is the same art Fusajiro Yamauchi picked for their first cards. They were hand drawn at the time so it was less saturated and the colors weren't as solid, but from the time Nintendo has been manufacturing them in bulk, this is what they look like, minus the characters.
It's also not original or unique. Just like how the face of playing cards all look basically the same, this is just want Hanafuda cards look like. It's standard. There is very little variation unless you are making a stylized deck, and the plain black backings (what Nintendo used at first, seeing playing Hanafuda in public was banned at the time you didn't want them to stand out) are pretty common. So your "replica" would look basically identical to cards I can pick up at a 100 yen shop. They wouldn't even have branding on them.
Instead, you're getting the standard cards with Nintendo characters on them. This is a huge part of the history of the company because they were originally working with Disney and the first Hanafuda deck they made with characters on them (they generally just made US playing cards with characters on the back. Or porn. Their card sets with topless women on the back were extremely popular in the US) was one with a bunch of Disney IPs in almost the exact same poses on the same cards.
Looks like they sold out
The Mario postcard set is back in stock on my Nintendo get in quick 😎
