Re: Review: Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy (3DS)

Bassman_Q

I have to agree with Bliquid (#5); Dissidia is an excellent game loaded with content and possibly my favorite game on PSP. Aside from its LOOONG loading times, it doesn't deserve the dissing it received from the review.

That being said, I'm glad this turned out to be such a great game. I will difinitely have it on my radar once I buy a 3DS.

But one quick question: Will the Series mode spoil the story for any of the Final Fantasy games? I mean, does it uncover a lot of the plot and/or plot twists? I've played through about half of the series' games, but for those I still haven't played (FFVII and FFX specifically), I'm worried it will spoil those games' stories for me.

Re: Feature: A Visual Guide to Nintendo's Handheld Revamps - Part Two

Bassman_Q

My first handheld was the original GBA, the standard purple color. I actually bought it when the SP had just come out, silly me. Luckily, my parents bought me and my brother both SP's for Christmas, the special edition Lime Green ones that only came with the Donkey Kong Country bundle. I still use it today for all my GB/GBA cravings.

I never had a GBMicro, but if it COULD play GB and GBC games, I think I would name it the absolute best Gameboy system ever. I wish Nintendo would make another handheld of a similar size...

As for the DS models, I waited two years until I found a sale for one. I held out until I found a bundle at Costco that included a white DS and NSMB for $130. At the time, I thought it was the original DS, until I realized it was actually a Lite, so it was a double score for me. For about 2 years I played on my White Lite, until it got a crack on the hinge, and I decided I should get a new model. That's when the DSi came out, so I went ahead and pre-ordered a black DSi at a local GameStop. I was enticed by the possibility of a download system on a Nintendo handheld, because I had recently become obsessed with downloading things from the Wii Shop. While there never was a VC on the DSi, it's still tied with my SP as my favorite Nintendo handheld. Needless to say, I still use it for all my DS and DSiWare fixes.

Re: Talking Point: The Pros and Cons of 3DS XL

Bassman_Q

I disapprove of huge handhelds. I thought the PSP and DS were big enough but not too big, with the GBA SP pretty much perfect, but you can hardly call this and the DSiXL "handheld" systems. Might as well be a "Lapheld" instrument.

Re: Catch the North American Nintendo Direct Live Here

Bassman_Q

I really don't understand why they wanna keep releasing bigger models of handheld devices. Pretty soon they won't be very portable. :/ I was really hoping for either a slightly SMALLER 3DS or at least a sleeker one... but bigger DOES NOT mean better. I'm hugely disappointed. :/

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue One

Bassman_Q

Hmm... lessee... I just FINALLY finished Skyward Sword, so I'll be playing other games this weekend. It's probably gonna be as follows:

On Wii:
Donkey Kong Country Returns, as I just was able to snag a copy for $30 instead of the usual $50. Also, I might play some helpful servings of Kirby Super Star or Monster World IV (VC) on the side.

On DS:
I think I'll try to finally beat Amoebattle this weekend if I have time. That 11th level got me so bad and stuck, it's not even funny. Then, I could also attempt to work my way to getting the Gold Trophy in Plants vs. Zombies. To cool down, I'll probably play some levels of Penguin Patrol on the side (no pun intended).

On PSP:
If I have time on top of playing the other two systems, I'll continue my story mode playthrough of Dissidia 012: Duodecim. Or maybe just play some arcade mode battles, as the story tends to be painfully dragged along. In between, I'll try to get further with the PSmini Velocity, which is crazy awesome. Or maybe finally beat Super Stardust Portable.

Re: Kirby's 20th Anniversary Special Collection Doesn't Suck

Bassman_Q

Well, I already have half of the games listed on there (Nightmare in Dreamland on GBA, a remake of Kirby's Adventure on NES, Kirby Super Star and Kirby's Dreamland 3 on VC), so most likely I won't buy it.

Besides, I'm still saving up for Xenoblade Chronicles, a 3DS, a Wii U, and Pikmin 3.

Re: Miyamoto Talks Down Idea of 3DS Redesign

Bassman_Q

I too speculate that Ninty will release a new model in a year or two. TBH, I kind of feel that the 3DS could look a bit sleeker. If you look closely, it seems like the two halves of the clamshell don't touch in a sleek manner like the DS Lite or DSi. If it were more sleek and curvy, had a gripped circle pad, a better battery, and a fix to the button-touching-the-top-screen issue, I feel it could be at its prime.

Re: Reggie: Retro's Hard at Work, Won't Say More

Bassman_Q

The way I see it, we're all dissappointed because we didn't see any surprise software or hardware this year. But look at it this way: The reason why people see 2010 and 2011's Nintendo conferences as the best are because they had the 3DS and Wii U to reveal in those respective years. This year, we had no big hardware announcement, so most of it was just software that we already knew of. Already, there was a smaller chance for them to "Wow" us this year.

Next year, though, I predict that they'll showcase a new 3DS model. YOU HEARD IT FIRST FROM ME.

Re: E3 2012: Rayman Legends Trailer Looks Glorious in HD

Bassman_Q

Wow this looks pretty awesome. Almost reminds me of a mix of Donkey Kong Country what with the mini-games interspersed between levels and Shantae with the ability to switch between layers. Still need to pick up Origins when I have more money saved up, though...

Re: E3 2012: Nintendo Land is More Expansive Than You Thought

Bassman_Q

This sounds like something that should be integrated into the main console, as a built-in piece of software. Or at least, packaged in game. And, as others have mentioned, they should've had it with different "lands" for each franchise. Then, it would be pretty spectacular.

But, all hope is not lost for that to become a reality! I'm calling future DLC add-ons to expand each franchise area. Even if it's a paid-for system, it'll be an awesome thing to have DLC. You heard it first here.

Re: Talking Point: Reviewing Nintendo's E3 Press Conference

Bassman_Q

So here are my two cents about the presentation:

Was it disappointing? Yeah, it was. But was it terrible? No, not exactly. I feel it was definitely rushed, and it's unfortunate that they started off strong and ended weak, but there were at least a few games I got excited about. Pikmin 3's big reveal was certainly good, and so was NSMBU, even if the latter offered little of what was new. And there were a few shining moments where I had to laugh, specifically with Miyamoto grabbing the Pikmin plushy out of his jacket pocket and Reggie referencing the "My body is ready" meme. Plus, Arkham City, LEGO City Undercover, and Trine 2 all look pretty solid on the new system. And despite the drawn-out Nintendo Land reveal, I'm actually somewhat looking forward to that one as well.

But that's where I felt that the presentation fell weak; they didn't provide us with enough essential info. They didn't tell us when the Wii U would be released or for how much. They didn't tell us whether, like Wii Sports, Nintendo Land would be packaged with the console or not. They didn't even bother hitting us with a surprise announcement, like they have in years' past. And what was up with those Sing and Just Dance 4 demos? I seriously facepalmed when I saw the trailer for Sing. Like, who would actually dance along as a group while their friend was singing "Call Me Maybe"? -__- UNAMUSED.

But I suppose, for all it's worth, this year's presentation wasn't bad. It just didn't have the same excitement and energy that the presentations from previous years had. And despite its many shortcomings, I'm still very excited for the launch of the Wii U. 6/10

Re: Game of the Month: May 2012 - Monster World IV

Bassman_Q

I bought this game the week it got released here, and it's awesome. Really good for a Genesis game, and yes it does remind me a lot like Shantae. My only issues with it (as some other people have said) is that there are too few save points in the actual dungeons, and the game is a bit TOO straight-forward. There really isn't much exploration to do, as you pretty much just go to the dungeon, get through it, kill the boss, return to the hub city, and repeat with the next dungeon. If there was an overworld/more regions to explore, I think I would love it even more. That being said, this is still an excellent an awesome game (especially for an imported title!), though just not quite perfect in my eyes.

Re: Colors! 3D

Bassman_Q

@Flowerlark I just checked out the paintings you did cuz I was bored. GREAT JOB! They were all gorgeous, and I especially liked the Pansy, Dark Mountain, and Sakura Samurai ones. Keep up the great work!

Re: Feature: The Evolution of Nintendo's Controllers

Bassman_Q

I'd have to say that the GameCube controller was my favorite (like most people here), as it just felt natural in all the games on the system. Plus, the trigger buttons were nice to press.

For me the Wii Remote and Nunchuck was kind of awkward at times, and it still is to this day for my hands. However, I LOVE using the remote sideways for NES/TG16/Genesis games on VC. The buttons just feel awesome and natural when playing Mega Man 2 or Cave Story or Monster World IV on the Wii.

Re: Talking Point: Should Zelda Go Episodic?

Bassman_Q

@Geonjaha actually makes a solid point. The handheld Zelda games I felt were really fun and easy to get into because there was the main story (which wasn't dragged out too long to become boring), and there were numerous sidequests and chances for exploration to lengthen itself. I felt that Skyward Sword kind of missed it on both of those fronts. While it is an awesome game and an awesome addition to the series, there were times where I kind of had to FORCE myself to want to keep playing through the story; it felt kind of overly stretched out at times. Plus, the overworld wasn't consistently connected to each of its smaller parts this time, making exploration a very minor element in the overall scheme of things. I was also disappointed with how little there was to explore in the sky (only a few notable areas like Skyloft and the Lumpy Pumpkins), especially when compared to the likes of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Sure, there were numerous sidequests in the game, but the exploration factor was next to nil. There just wasn't enough overworld secrets to uncover in my opinion.

As for Zelda going episodic, I don't think they should. While I DO support them making Zelda titles that are less lengthy in the main storyline department, Zelda epics should never have to become "episodic." If they make shorter games, I'm fine with that; as long as they offer a lot more chances to explore. Because that is the reason why the Zelda series was so revolutionary in the first place.

Re: Review: Amoebattle (DSiWare)

Bassman_Q

I actually was ready to pay 8 to 10 bucks on the game, what with all the hype around the game. That's why I was so surprised to see it on the shop for only $5.

That being said, while I (personally) think it would've been better to have just left the music as it was before compressions and risk a price increase, the music quality is actually not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. I recently bought Plants vs. Zombies for the DS, and the music was sorta compressed and muffled in that format, just as it is here. However, it is not unlistenable as Chicken has said in the review. After awhile, like I did with PvZ, it became less annoying and more tolerable. It's certainly not a deal-breaker imo, just a minor flaw in the game. It's nowhere near the horrible audio quality of Come On Heroes.

From what I've played of the game, Amoebattle is a really solid buy. The graphics are great, the gameplay is great, and just about everything screams out a large amount of polish. The drawback aside from the slightly tinny music is the lack of achievements, or anything other than the campaign. I would give this one at least an 8, maybe even a 9, just like I would give Intrinsic's other game, Penguin Patrol.

Re: Review: Penguin Patrol (DSiWare)

Bassman_Q

@henroid - You guys did a fine job with this one. Definitely a well-polished game, with awesome spritework and atmospheric music. I almost died when I saw the penguins shivering and jumping around. SO FREAKIN' ADORABLE! But yeah, it's a great game, and it just so happened to be released on the DSi's 3-year anniversary. I bought it for that reason, and I was surprised at how good it turned out. Keep up the good work, guys! Looking forward to your next release, Amoebattle!

And anyone else reading this should buy the game. NOW. You won't regret it.

Re: Amoebattle's Quarantine Period is Nearly Over

Bassman_Q

Saving up my 1000 DSi Points for this game. I refuse to spend any of it until I know an exact price for it. I just purchased Penguin Patrol (also from Intrinsic Games), so hopefully that'll last me until Amoebattle.

~I'd be pissed if it just so happens to be 1200 points...~

Re: Review: Pirates Assault (DSiWare)

Bassman_Q

@Koops3 - Same here.

That's a shame that it got such a terrible score... I was actually kind of looking forward to this one because on the DSi shop it seemed to be a fun little time-waster for $2. Guess I was wrong...
But how can it be so much worse than Come On Heroes? That was just a wreck altogether.

Re: Nnooo Reveals escapeVektor for 3DS

Bassman_Q

Wow this actually makes me very sad. I loved the WiiWare version, but now I have to deal with the fact that the game will never be complete because they last minute decide to release it for the handheld instead? Why not release it on Vita, 3DS, AND WiiWare? That way, everyone can be happy.

Re: Review: Doodle Fit (DSiWare)

Bassman_Q

Glad the DSiWare port ended up pretty good. I just have one question, though: Are the themes the same ones used in the PSminis version? Cuz I've unlocked 3 themes in that version, but they all seem similar, and I would LOVE to have the themes seen in the screenshots here.

Re: Review: VVVVVV (3DSWare)

Bassman_Q

I played the demo on Steam and finished the first two levels. And considering there's only 6 levels in the game and the demo took me around half an hour, I'd imagine the game only takes around 2-3 hours. Not much for $8, sadly.

Re: Nintendo Download: 29th December 2011 (North America)

Bassman_Q

Well, for 3DS owners, it's a pretty solid update.

For people like me, who DON'T own a 3DS, it's not a very good one.

But at least I still have Skyward Sword, Fluidity, and several other games still to play and finish. Plus, I don't have enough points to buy anything on my DSi, so it's all good.

Re: Game of the Year: You Decide!

Bassman_Q

@Henmii - I'm glad I'm not the only one who voted Okamiden the best DS game of 2011.

However, I'm hoping I'm not the only one who voted for escapeeVektor Chapter 1 for WiiWare and Antipole for DSiWare. But if I am, I will stand for them the entire time. >:3

Re: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Bassman_Q

You guys are lucky for getting this game via the Ambassador program. This is definitely my 3rd favorite GBA game (behind Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and Final Fantasy VI Advance) and my favorite Fire Emblem game. You guys enjoy.
