Gears for Breakfast has been teasing A Hat In Time for Nintendo Switch since last August. After a brief update earlier this year, saying it was "coming soon" to the hybrid system, it's now finally been confirmed the game will arrive on 18th October.
A Hat In Time will cost $29.99 USD on the Switch eShop and $39.99 USD in physical form. The hard copy of the game even includes the "Seal the Deal" DLC to seal the deal. If you opt with a digital copy, you'll have to fork out $4.99 USD or the regional equivalent for this additional content. To celebrate the announcement, Gears for Breakfast has released a brand new trailer:
This "cute-as-heck" 3D "collect-a-thon" platformer is about a space-travelling tophat-wearing girl who must jump, climb and explore five "massive" worlds. In these locations, you'll need to find, collect and stitch together new magical hats. You can also play the game alongside a friend thanks to the local co-op feature.
The Seal the Deal DLC includes an all-new Arctic Cruise chapter, a new difficulty mode, six new time rifts and a stack of additional content such as outfits and even camera filters. Check out some screenshots of the DLC below:

Wait, why did she wear two sunglasses ?
(Looking at video cover)
I loved mario sunshine. Best mario game out. And this looks a blast aswell
About time. This game looks amazing. Can’t wait to try it out. Gonna pick up the physical version because it includes the DLC.
Prices pretty much match Steam, nice.

My son purchased this on Steam awhile ago. I played a bit and watched him and his brother play co-op, all seems good. Glad to see it finally coming to Switch, it's a worthy addition.
I'll pick it up on a sale and yes I will still be a bit petty about the Twitter comments. I refused to buy this at full price.
October is starting to become pretty busy. I'll already be broke with too much to play after September's releases but I'll add this to the list and try to pick it up.
I'm concerned because the PS4 version apparently had major lag issues, so I'm worried that Switch will be worse. But maybe it will be better optimized?
@sketchturner Probably since they had to rework the whole game to run on the Switch. The original ran on Unreal 3 engine. The Switch doesn't support that so I'm curious as to what they did to it.
I already enjoyed the PC version but if they got it running great on the Switch, I'll probably pick up the physical version on sale later on for fun.
Damn good platformer so don;t miss out on it.
This is a FANTASTIC game and any fans of 3D platformers, especially Mario Sunshine, really need to pick this up. That being said, I am a bit weary of these developers. I got this game day one for PS4 only to have them immediately drop support for it and not bring any of the DLC, added modes, or difficulty to the PS4 version, only to be told most of it is launching for the Switch version which they originally said would never happen. Now I'm worried the rest of the DLC won't come to the Switch version either
Very good game, but with how poorly GfB treated PS4 players (horribly optimized with no patch in sight, no DLC, no communication) I absolutely will not be buying day one. Let’s not forget how they treated Switch players at the start as well.
Maybe I’ll buy on a good sale but they’ve ruined any goodwill in my eyes.
Never played A Hat In Time and I've been interested for awhile, this is a must-buy for me!
@Discipledoctor "Treated Switch players" They said they got a dang Switch dev unit and people still kept constantly bugging them as if they were just got the dev unit to do absolutely nothing with it. I don't know why you're holding a small indie team like them so harshly to begin with when you have bigger studios more deserving of malice than just a INDIE TEAM who's only issue I see is just lack of elaboration on what's going on behind the scenes. Did you ever think there's a reason why they can't say what's going on?
Glad there's finally a date. I will buy physical.
AHHH I just bought the PS4 version for $15 because it was on sale and I didn't want to wait anymore for the Switch version. I was planning on playing it in the coming time, and I probably still will, but now I want this one too because the Switch is made for platformers and also it's physical. I should've waited to spend my money, but I'm glad it'll be on Switch in a few months.
I’ve already got the game twice, but it’s so good, I definitely want it wherever I go!
Remember when they had a full meltdown on twitter about how this wont come to switch?
Just like how Final Fantasy 7, Nightrap, and Cuphead will never come to switch?
@Discipledoctor did the PS4 game run badly? I didn’t notice.
@PipeGuy64Bit The people constantly asking was for sure annoying and I get it but you can not respond on a social account the way they did and not expect backlash. They said it and people don't forget just because tweets were deleted.
I'm not even sure the person responsible for the tweets ever apologized either.
This might be the first game over $20 that I will buy without a discount since Smash Bros
The main character Hat Kid kind of almost like the character Atsuko Kagari from Little Witch Academia.
That collapsing time rift was anime as heck! Finally some good ol' fashioned collect-a-thon adorableness. With this, Cuphead, and including Rad Rodgers, I have all the cute badasses I'll ever need.
With the physical announcement, it just became a must get again!!
Game looks fun, price is right... but I've heard of some performance issues on PS4 so I'll wait for reviews, as per usual.
When the physical comes on Amazon UK I'll grab it, I'm such a sucker for 3D platformers
I would refuse to buy this game because of the perceived tone of a tweet made by a frustrated indie dev years ago... but then I realise that I want it and I actually have more important things to get worked up about
Yes! I was looking forward to this when it was supposed to come out for the Wii U, and the end result is supposedly great.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, this is so darn cute I want to hug it.
If you can, get A Hat on Time on PC. You will be missing out on mod support, of which there are very good mods. Like Mario's FLUDD and Cappy, cool levels, etc.
Lost interest already. Maybe on a sale. Too many great games to play.
Loved it on PS4 not enough to get it again though!
It's cool this is finally releasing. Disappointed the second DLC is nowhere to be seen, though.
Got this on PS4. Found it to be pretty meh. Not awful but not great either
Now we just need to see how it runs.
It's about time! I'm willing to double dip on this incredible experience! It's no Mario Odyssey, this was my fault cause I played this game at the same time. Which in return, playing this game made me want to play Odyssey more. However, this game was made by an incredibly talented small team of developers so as long as you can look at it like that you'll have a blast.
However, that price point isn't pretty. I remember paying $20 for it maybe it was on sale at the time. I think there's enough there including the dlc to justify the $40 retail price.
Looks good so far! I’ll wait for a review
Honestly one of my favorite indie games of all time. Had such a blast with this game last year that I might rebuy this on Switch. Highly recommend, 8/10.
Nice! Definitely a buy as long as it has a steady frame-rate.
I feel like this will compete with Super Lucky’s Tale. They both seem pretty similar.
I've been eyeing this one for a while (reviews and soundtrack got me interested in it), particularly after a Switch version was announced. Here's hoping the port turns out well.
A few things to note:
1. Only includes first DLC, no word yet on if second DLC (Nyakuza Metro + Online Party) will ever come to the Switch. Even if it does, it most likely will drop the Online mode like the GOG PC version did and only include Nyakuza Metro.
2. It's been confirmed to run at 720p30 in docked mode, portable will be even lower resolution but still 30 FPS according to the devs vs 60FPS on the PC version.
3. Only the retail release is $40 since the DLC is included as part of the price (it's still downloaded separately though, not on the cart), the Digital eShop version uses the same setup as PC, buy the game at $30 and spend $5 on the DLC. You are paying a $5 premium for a physical copy but they are otherwise the same price between both versions once you account for bundling vs no bundling.
If you can only buy one version and you own a device that can handle it, I would still suggest buying it on Steam on PC for the higher resolution, frame rate, online, extra chapter, and the amazing mod support which greatly expands the game with new levels, abilities, characters, and more. Still the Switch version should be fine if you really want to smug dance on the go or only own a Switch as long as it ends up being a stable 30FPS at least.
Day 1 Buy. Local Co-op, thank you!
Hope this is getting a physical release in Europe too. They're Danish, so you'd assume so, but you can never be too sure these days.
@Haywired They said it will be, currently the pre-order link is just broken and will be opened up to more regions in the next few days.
@BrandonGiesing Things are still in development. After a couple months, it should have an optimized, compatible version of Nyahkuza Metro and online. Give it time.
@Dakotastomp Nyakuza, possibly yes. Online likely no as it uses Steam's servers, not their own so it's not even on other PC versions, it coming to console would be even more unlikely unless they completely redo the server backend which would be too expensive for a tiny indie studio.
I honestly prefer this over Super Mario Odyssey and I recommend the game for any fans of 3D platformers. It's got co-op too.
A game on a cartridge in a box for a Nintendo system on shelves in stores. That's the dream.
Congrats Jonas Kærlev & Co.!
@BrandonGiesing Well, Cyberstep's onigiri had roughly half the manpower and money of GfB(More or less), and they developed a "functional" online server. tho it could be because it started online for all OS. I say if fan demand is great enough and it doesn't have online multiplayer at the start, they'll try and find some way to bring online to it for Switch. Is it a matter of actually redoing the entire server process and having to rebuild a custom one? Because that should be simple to fix.
@SpicyBurrito16 me too
@Dakotastomp The entire online feature is built on an early access API (Steam Networking API 2.0) that Valve made which Gears is currently the only company using, the entire backbone of the online feature is built around this Steam exclusive beta API which runs on Valve's servers so they would have to replace it somehow to make it work on console or GOG since Valve is probably not gonna put a Steam API on another platform.
It would most likely be very hard and time-consuming to swap out considering it's literally using Valve's servers as the backbone. They even said it wouldn't have been 50 players if not for Valve so even if they did replace it, it might be way less people at once.
Plus they might have a exclusivity deal for online with Valve considering they got early access.
Looks good, too bad Mario Odyssey obliterated all other 3D platformers
@BrandonGiesing Well dang. R.I.P online(maybe) Maybe we'll get an accommodation for this in the future.
@RajadaDeTomaToma Super Mario Odyssey? More like Super Mario Sleep.
@BrandonGiesing Do you have a source? It'd be a huge bummer to play sub-720p on handheld for me.
EDIT: Nvm, found it.
Great news! I am curious wich one I will like better, this or Yooka Laylee. Yooka Laylee was pretty fun. But many people consider A Hat in time to be better.
