GrandPOObear - popular Mario Maker level creator ever since the original game and general Mario speedrunner extraordinaire - has once again felt the pointy end of Nintendo's moderation stick and had one of his levels for Super Mario Maker 2 deleted for unknown reasons. The streamer (real name David Hunt) has had this happen before with the original Super Mario Maker when all of his levels were inexplicably removed at once.
As reported by Kotaku AU, his Super Expert course 'Pile of Poo: Kai-Zero G' has vanished from servers and Hunt received an email that he shared a screenshot of via Twitter:
Hunt's 'kaizo' levels are notorious for their challenge, but his zero G creation seemingly contained no glitches or other 'inappropriate content' that Nintendo might object to. The only obviously questionable aspect of the level (besides the incredible difficulty that has us in a cold sweat after watching the video below) is its name: 'Pile of Poo'. Hunt counters this argument, though, with the point that Nintendo permitted the re-uploading of his original Wii U levels containing the same name:
It's a shame to see the Mario Maker community continually butt heads with Nintendo over a game which has so much potential and already supports a large, inclusive following. Nintendo's mysterious method of moderation allows the company to remove anything it takes issue with, but it's frustrating when apparently innocent levels are removed without justification.
Fortunately, Hunt's popularity means there's plenty of documented video material of the level for us to enjoy (see below, although be warned that it contains an amount of F-bombs commensurate to the level's difficulty). Current policy means that Hunt would have to rebuild the level from scratch as there's no way for him to re-upload an edited version, so for now there's no way for you to test your mettle against this monstrous low-gravity creation.
Have you come up against the mysterious Nintendo ban hammer while playing either iteration of Mario Maker? Let us know your thoughts and experiences with a comment.

Not sure what to see, seems a bit odd that they were targeted. Hoping Nintendo enlightens us a bit more.
Nintendo is more strict with the level names in SMM2, so yeah this 100% about the name.
I think its because of the stream of the level, with him swearing, it is associated with the level so therefore inappropriate language bomb
It's the name
Even if it's pretty tame, Nintendo wants all the 6-year-olds playing this game and not repeating "pile of poo" at home or at school, something they learned playing the Nintendoes online
Maybe refrain from infantile names, and we'll then know for sure if it was a factor.
If the issue is really with the name, isn't there anything in place to check that you aren't submitting levels with prohibited or offensive names?
Why is it that you can't have a copy on your stage saved in local ?! That's what baffle me the most about this. Sure Nintendo is stupid strict and opaque when it comes to online moderation but nothing new here and they're hardly the only one, but at least it wouldn't be such a b***s*** move if all the hardwork put into thoses popular levels weren't lost just because someone at Nintendo woke up in a bad mood last morning. Again it's another proof that shows how badly they design anything around online.
@Bunkerneath
That's not how this works
Nintendo is really out of touch with reality
Didn’t this happen with the original on Wii u they always seem to pick people who make a big fuss about it but if it is over a naming issue then people should understand that kids play these games and think of a better or more acceptable name for their levels and people will moan that Nintendo are backwards when it comes to online a little more thought or clear stating of the rules would be a good idea cos they won’t comment on why they have removed the levels
Even if he titled it pile of feaces or excriment it would have been deleted. I'm a big fan of Grand Poobear and watch his videos on a regular basis and I'm quite perplexed as to why he's having such a hissy fit over this. Nintendo just doesn't want any references to human waste, pure and simple.
Just Nintendo's way of having a bit of fun, the swines. Strange thing is they make such bloody good games.
Maybe someone else could upload a level called Pile of Poo and see if it gets deleted - then we’d know. I’d do it, but don’t have the game or the stellar Nintendo online service ...
There's a character called Poo in Earthbound. Double standards, if this is the reason behind the deletion.
It could be an automated process, but I think Nintendo really should clarify what exactly caused the deletion. Just saying "harmful content" is not clear enough.
I remember this story first time around. Not bothering with it this time!
Maybe make the course and change the name to see if that's the cause of it being removed?
With all things said regarding poobear, that first level though, Insane levels of difficulty right there..very creative.
He only got the go ahead for allowing his stupid name because of his eceleb status which it seems hasn’t been carried onto 2, I guarantee you Nintendo would never allow us common folk to have a fecal related level name so the rules are being enforced fairly now.
He’s being super naive to think what he got away with before would carry over forever across games and (much more popular) consoles.
lol what did you expect with such a stupid name? 🙄 Don't people get it that you don't bend the rules with Nintendo or try to to skirt as close as possible. They will screw you over.
Yes, he says he reuploaded similar named files previously, but chances are Nintendo did not manually check them. I doubt it was intentional by Nintendo to allow them.
"why does nintendo pick on me" "Heartbroken" Get over yourself
No matter what this guy says, it's definitely the name. Lame as that is.
I clicked the video, I regretted it 2 seconds later.
I suppose someone must like that kind of... "commentary".
Hard pass.
Oh no, the word "poo". No child knows that terrible swear word. How will we all survive?! If it's because of the name, Nintendo are just pathetic. And them barely explaining their decisions shows that they still treat their own fans like crap.
@RainbowGazelle I agree, they should stop getting offended over words. It's so stupid. People are so sensitive nowadays.
The thing is, if it is the word ''poo'', why isn't there some filter in place that checks for these words and doesn't allow you to upload levels that contain words like ''poo''?
Meh. It’s a stupid name and the fewer kaizo levels the better. At the end of the day he still doesn’t have to get a job or contribute to society.
So if someone wanted to upload a level that potentially featured Poo from Earthbound (assuming he's a skin in SMM), and the level was called "Poo's Adventure," would that mean that it would be taken down as well?
@SamuFinland It could be, as nobody know why his level was deleted.
I would be curious to see if he changed his name and the name of his courses if the same thing would happen.
I know it is clearly stated that "Poo" isn't the problem, but I don't think I believe that to be true.
It is the word "poo". The fact that his levels are on wii u mean nothing. Different people reviewed them.
@Dethmunk
I am sure Nintendo is not hand picking the levels they delete... it is a algorithm that looks for bad vocabulary etc... therefore there is no personal treatment like "Please change the Title in your Level"
Anyway crying over one level... seems like some one need a bit ok publicity
So how about "Pile of Dung"? Would that be okay or are any of you freaks offended by that?
It seems mission impossible speaking and writing in a way that offends no one in the 21st century.
What happened to you world? You used to be cool!
How is this news? Just because he has a following?
Also completely agree, it's the name.
Why is this worth a post Nintendolife???
Some youtuber lost ONE level... and is crying now...
mybe nintendo is more strict with wording this time?!?
Anyway some f... up youtuber needs some promotion and publucity.
Sites like nintendolife jump on the waggon... change your the names of your level and stop crying like a baby!
Yeah its probably the name. Poo isnt exactly forbidden but highly likely it triggered Nintendo's content flag algorithm
I mean... people could have reported it, right?
People probably reported the level because of the name and the automated system deleted it after enough reports.
If it is not about the name of the level, what else could it be? Is this some conspiracy against Mario Maker 2 creators? Dude needs to just realize it is the name of the level that got it removed. It is literally that simple. Change the name and re-upload it
@zocker-hias
Exactly, as if they were to check any single level and politely ask the uploader to change the name. The uploader agrees with terms and conditions and if they aren't met the it's his problem, not Nintendo's.
"Inexplicably"
Yeah, those popular Youtubers have so much influence every random parent in the world will immediately think "oh, that mario maker guy" when they read Pile of Poo. I don't know how they could possibly interpret that any other way.
I don’t see the problem with this “poo” word. I mean kids say it all the time. But you know what, Nintendo could of asked the creator to change the title of the name instead of deleting the course for good.
They should have a filter in place when u upload a level
@ReaperExTenebris
I don't think it's a dislike. It's more of an attitude. Nintendo was always quite proud of themselves thanks to the success of the nes. It shows to this day.
Nintendo sucks for deleting Poo's levels in Mario Maker 1 and this level in SMM 2. I love Zelda, Mario, Advance Wars, Pikmin, Metroid, etc but hate some aspects of Nintendo's corporate culture. They should be happy YouTubers and twitchers are playing the hell out of their games. They should be happy Digital Foundry loves Switch and examines Nintendo machines and games in detail. Instead they do crap like delete levels, don't send games to be played by European press, close down that Japanese source for getting direct feed of Switch portable play, try to outlaw used game sales and game rentals etc. They need to get their act together and stop attacking their fans!
the boy should learn to name his levels properly...
Its highly likely the content moderation process in Mario Maker 2 is a lot more automated compared to Mario Maker 1 since Nintendo probably had to account for a far greater number of submissions. Of course the thing with content bots is that they are not always the best at gauging what is appropriate and what is not
I remember typing a comment on a certain level "I don't really like this particular part of the level" and it said something like "This message contains words not tolerated for a comment" sooooo, Nintendo thinks people are pretty weak I guess... I did see a level with "Hell" in the name so that doesn't make any sense at all...
@60frames-please
First off Nintendo has gotten far more youtube friendly as of late. They even threw out their content creators program that everyone seemed to hate.
That Japanese source may have broke NDA which is why it was shut down to begin with.
Nintendo kinda stopped fighting game rentals long ago.
@Bunkerneath No, Nintendo don't trawl media sites watching all Mario Maker 2 content and deleting any levels that are features in content with mature language. How would that even work? What if someone did a video of random levels they'd found and dropped F-bombs all over it, then Nintendo would have to delete a level because a random person made a video about it and swore and it's not the creators fault at all? Have you seen YouTube comments? It ain't the most PG place. And there is so much social media how could they ever moderate it all?
It's because of the name. They might not have cracked down on it before but they are now. Sure it's not a swear but it is crass and childish. If he re-uploaded the level and called it 'Pile of Mario' it'd stay up, even if he made a potty-mouthed video about it.
There's a fart sound effect in the game. I don't see why the name would be a problem.
***innocent look on face***
Why has it been deleted? It’s inexplicable.
I’m heartbroken
Pile of Poo why?
Facepalm.
Seriously - anyone saying it’s not that bad. Right... but where is the line... it’s irrelevant there is a character in another game or anything else. The level is Called pile of poo and that is purposefully trying to be clever and edgy in a “I can complain it’s tame” if it’s deleted.
Another day and another self important entitled influencer.
Bore off pal.
Nintendo needs to seriously dial-down their censorship policies. There are countless Reddit users who have said that their comments or levels have been taken down for "reasons". Nintendo can't even specify what the problem is. Just generic reasons.
Most users have just stopped leaving any comments and just use the pre-made stickers if they feel that they have to leave something. You can't leave any criticism on a level at all without the risk of getting an email from Nintendo.
The reason the GrandPooBear incident is important and worth an article is because since he has a following, more people will find out about this and maybe it'll pressure Nintendo to change a little.
@Aneira who are you talking to?
Literally nobody in the comments previous have said they find it offensive just that they have the comprehension to understand that the name is the most likely reason it was automatically taken down.
Possibly because somebody, within their right of how the heck they want to parent, reported it.
No one here cares. Only you (abd a few others) seem to be bent out of shape because some words were removed.
I think i see the sensitive ones...
Its the name im sure of it
A shame really level is FANTASTIC
@Kokusho by local, do you mean on the Switch? Because it does, and he didn’t lose that, it just won’t let him reupload that level since it was deleted.
Really, NL? “Inexplicably”? You are fully aware why it was deleted, it was most definitely the name. The level itself is just a hard Kaizo level, which are everywhere, and it was flagged for inappropriate content. Yes, they let it fly by with SMM, which was released on a system that was failing, but clearly moderation has gotten more strict for SMM2. And GrandPooBear definitely knows that, he plays dumb for publicity sometimes, he wouldn’t be getting news articles if he just recreated it with a new name and uploaded it, making a stink over it is good publicity.
@AlphaElite This most likely happened. The server sees a stage named Pile of Poo with content reports on it? That would trigger an alarm for sure.
Wanted to watch the video but couldn't get past that cringey intro
@Octane Speaking of word filters, the Switch has one built into its autocompletion dictionary. Funny thing is that it doesn't do a very good job. For example, it will never suggest 'penis', but 'penisnijd' (Dutch for 'penis envy'), no problem! At least it isn't as overactive as the one built into Pokémon Black and White, where people couldn't give their Cofagrigus the name 'Cofagrigus', because it contains 'fag'. I think the games still don't allow people to name their Pokémon 'Violet' because 'viol' is a mature word in French.
Hahahahahaha priceless ...Go Nintendo!
@zocker-hias exactly this. Anyone who thinks some thick headed pearl clutcher hand picked this level for deletion is someone who doesn't understand how modern moderation works.
It's a no win situation. If there was absolutely no moderation the levels would be a complete wasteland. If they did it by hand the process would be subject to human error and bias. If they publish specific rules people will try to find loopholes and will constantly skirt close to them for the attention.
This is probably the best they can do with the situation.
It seems like a lot of people haven't watched his most recent video talking about this situation.
First of all, he is handling this all very very well. He isn't making a big stink (tee-hee) out of this situation.
In the past he contacted Nintendo about this and they said the name wasn't the problem. He even said now if they've changed their mind on that he is willing to change his series name, he just wants to know if that is the reasoning.
Ultimately he thinks it is a reporting(? I forgot his exact word) issue.
Here is the video link:
https://youtu.be/c977gqYKdbo
To begin with who cares about some random person making levels that anyone can make? He has 182k followers who apparently practice the art of non participation. People have always made add on levels and if Nintendo wants to delete the level who cares?
watches video, stops it 2 seconds later
.....You're posting news about THIS GUY? -.-
Wow just wow at some of these comments.
Seems to be a growing hatred of youtubers these days, you don’t have to like a content creator to understand the situation they are in. Yes the name may have flagged up due to reports. Grandpoobear is pretty popular level creator and player and has approached the situation pretty responsibly, which is more than I can say for some of the people commenting on here are. I think everyone has the right to ask why something like this is done not just youtubers. However, because he is a youtubers he has an audience which news sites and media know will have an interest in this story. Come in guys stop complaining about stupid things this is a reportable story. I’m starting to feel like I’m on crazy pills when I look through comment sections these days.
I don’t think it is throwing a tantrum or vying for attention to ask for clarity and transparency when it comes to matters like this.
@ReaperExTenebris
That's the point. They know whats best and their success reinforces that attitude. Only they can get away with low effort stuff and questionable business practices. Take fire emblem heroes, they provide extremely little, yet people are crazy over that game.
Because somebody reports them. And somebody at Nintendo listens. And it is because its called Poo. Just because he reuploaded the levels, doesn’t change that. Somebody hasn’t reported them yet. The maybe one or few people who did got their kicks, moved on, and forgot about him OR a different set of eyes at Nintendo decided not to take them down a second time. I feel his pain. I get it. I’ve had a level taken down on the Wii U version because nobody starred it, and it was a grand Metroidvania level that I sank over 20 hours into making. People are stingy with their stars and don’t even bother trying to beat a well thought out level. I star levels that I don’t even think are great, but if they’re remotely enjoyable and I can tell they put some thought into it, I know it helps that player. If I can beat it and give it a star, thats a lot for the Mario Maker community. But getting back on topic. Really little kids also play this game. A 4 year old might have played “Pile of Poo,” and his mom walked in. She might have been so offended and dropped her paperback romance novel, her Mary Kay brochures, and ripped that controller from his hand and hit report! Her husband, Ned Flanders was even more furious because he couldn’t beat the level! Now I mean; I don’t find it offensive. Quite funny actually. But you gotta think of the people that do. I would move away from the Poo subject. Be like me, VR32X, a proud Virtual Boy owner who mixed his name with Sega 32X. It clearly shows my style and tastes. Many people get jealous of my unique handle, but 30 Helens agree that it means I don’t have many friends, or much of a life.
@J-Plap You can’t use the word ‘like’. This is to avoid people asking for ‘likes’
Nintendo tried the level, rage quit because of the difficulty, and deleted it.
Of course it's the name. And yes, it's stupid to not allow that name, and Nintendo should really be more clear about what is allowed and not. But it's not reasonable to think that Nintendo will change their minds about it, so just accept it and move on. Maybe make a few more tweets about the slightly arbitrary rules and how it made you lose all those hours of work. But after that - definitely move on.
Should have gone with Grand S*** Bear. Funny enough he mentioned someone got the name Poo before him.
If you push to see how close you can come to getting yourself banned without actually getting banned, you DESERVE the ban you will eventually get.
@ReaperExTenebris guess I'll hafta call him grand poo bear and see what gets censored first.
@tendonerd We don't censor immature words, only swear words and racist/sexist comments.
Never heard of him, 'kaizo' type levels aren't fun anyway, no loss.
Maybe other levels haven't been reported. Maybe a child stumbled upon the level. The parent didn't approve and complained.
@ReaperExTenebris I assure you these aren't my rules - I just enforce them. I think NL likes to keep a family-friendly image so swear words aren't accepted, for better or for worse.
@ReaperExTenebris Thanks fot your understanding. If you do ever eant to discuss the possibility of swear words being uncensored here, then I'd suggest contacting Anthony Dickens. You probably already know but he has an account if you want to @ him. Thanks again!
@Crimson_Ridley There's no double standard. Earthbound is rated T for Teen while Mario Maker is rated E for everyone. Therefore, Mario's content needs to adhere to stricter guidelines than Earthbound.
