Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night arrives on Nintendo Switch next week on 25th June. PS4 and Xbox One players already have their hands on it, however, and a game-breaking bug has been found which will affect every version.
An update for the game, taking it to version 1.02, appears to be the problem. Essentially, if players start their game before downloading this update, and then go on to update their software, they'll face issues which prevent them from progressing through the game. Publisher 505 Games has issued a statement to explain the situation and offer guidance to Switch owners ahead of launch:
“We have been investigating a PS4/Xbox One issue that is blocking player progress in the game. We apologize for this bug and thank you for your patience while we investigate.
The issue occurs when a new game is started before downloading the 1.02 update. After the update, treasure chests will appear in the incorrect open/closed state.
Without the items from these chests, progress is blocked.
Players affected by this bug will be required to restart the game with a new save in order to properly progress.
We investigated a number of options to address this issue and each fix requires a new game to be started. Despite our efforts to provide a fix that preserves pre-1.02 progress, this is the best solution to avoid future issues.
Xbox One players will also be affected by this when the 1.02 patch is delivered next week. Switch players who have a physical copy should download the 1.02 patch before playing.”
If you're planning on getting the game digitally on Switch, you should automatically receive the newest - and safest - version. If you're buying physically, however, your cart will initially contain the original version of the game. As the statement says, make sure you update your software before playing to avoid any disappointment.
Earlier this week, a new trailer showed off the game's collaboration with Shovel Knight who will be appearing as a playable character.
Are you planning on buying the game next week? Make sure to pass this message along to anyone you know who could be affected!

Great launch. 10/10
I suppose the game needed more testing ...
I'm getting the physical game delivered for Switch next week, and looking forward to it. I'm hearing a lot of praise for the game.
Sounds like I'll be safe from this bug anyway.
It's not like people have been waiting so long for this game that the hype train went off a cliff...only to land on some rails and rise again. Oh wait...
I’m amazed. I preordered and it’s getting great reviews, I bet some will be disappointed if they don’t follow Nintendo news and know how to avoid this bug.
@RupeeClock As long as you update before playing.
Seems like a sloppy launch.
Preordered this but I’m regretting it already might have to look into getting a refund
@Gs69 lol
why?
update the game ya turkey
@vitalemrecords it’s not just this I heard a lot of negativity surrounding the game that goes right back to the early days of its development and people moaning saying the gameplay isn’t up to scratch but I thought I will preorder and make my own mind up but there are quite a few games coming out around the same time that I’m interested in
"The issue occurs when a new game is started before downloading the 1.02 update. After the update, treasure chests will appear in the incorrect open/closed state."
Actually it sounds that if you do not update (the day one patch). You will not encounter the mentioned bug.
Lots of streamers got the physical copy 4-5 days before the digital release and they managed to finish the game just fine.
@Gs69 Most of what I've heard about the game has been really positive. I wouldn't base my opinion off of an alpha version.
That's a pretty bad bug. I wonder how they missed it.
@roboshort well that’s what I mean I’m a massive fan of Castlevania games so this is exactly my type of game so I will just wait and see for myself
I read it twice and thought the same thing.
Don't update, don't break your game. Seems reasonable if you have your system setup to where you have it (default isn't it?) where you request the download first for patching. I'm sure 1.0/1.01 whatever it is is just fine, so don't update the game, or at least until some 1.03 exists.
I have downloaded the Steam copy and pre-ordered Switch physical copy. Luckily, I haven't started to play yet. Will update tonight before playing.
So if your playing on X Box you shouldn’t even bother playing until the patch? I guess that version should have been delayed with the Switch. Lol.
It’s also not instilling any confidence in future updates.
That's rough. I guess there are some benefits for the terrible kickstarted delivery times.
Getting my copy today. Pretty excited.
Actually the physical copy in this case is superior!
This is from a user!
"The silver bromide is in a chest right after you defeat the twin dragons on the tower. For some players, including myself, who installed patch 1.02 yesterday after playing on 1.01 for a few hours, this and many other chest were already opened with no item inside, this makes it impossible to progress since you need the silver bromide. My fix was to delete my game, reinstall it via physical copy, pause the update, and load up my save on 1.01 again. The chest was unopened i got the bromide and was able to progress. I've since upgraded to 1.02 again and so far everything seems fine. I also noticed that the 1.02 file size changed from around 3 gb to around 2.5gb so they may have applied a fix to the patch, not sure though."
So you can finish the game with the physical copy
Ouch, just imagine getting so far, then updating then being stuck and have to start again. Man that is bad, didnt anyone test the update before releasing??
Waiting on my physical
Seems easy enough to avoid if you always try to update your game before starting it. I'd I read this correctly you are either fine if you use the version as is and finish without an update or start a new game after the update... a bit meh, that they can't easily fix this, but with the heads up, there won't be any bad surprises...
I've been playing this on the PS4. It doesn't surprise me that it has bugs, as from a technical standpoint the PS4 version is deeply unimpressive. Not the level of the car crash Switch version, but it's still weak. On a PS4 Pro it's 1080/60 in SDR. I guess there are simply no Pro enhancements at all, either that or the PS4 Amateur version is even worse.
The game itself is a near carbon copy of Symphony of the Night, but with low budget, mostly ugly 3D visuals instead of beautiful 2D. Music is utterly forgettable and generic too. So far for me it's a 6/10 game.
What does the 1.2 update fix that is worth braking the game? Just withdraw the update till they fix it, right? Or am I a moron and don't under how things work ?
I'll wait for that sale 😜
Whiney whiney
@Abes3 first batch of "free DLC". it adds a BossRush mode and a couple of small updates.
@Gs69 The cartridge is okay, the day 1 update wasn't. Just update before playing or don't update and update when the next patch is available.
You call THIS a GLITCH!?
Advice is not how you spell refund.
This should be a class action lawsuit.
@StevenG ...Why?
It comes out next week? Man time is really flying by
I just finish the game on Xbox One and I'm disappointed.
Order of Ecclesia is a million times better. Keep your cash for something else guys.
What a bunch of overreactions in here. I guess this means Smash Ultimate is nothing but hot trash because of the piranha plant bug.
Playing my friend pedro! Will complete in time to play this soonest when released
@ramu-chan congratulations on winning troll of the day!
I'm really stocked for this game. I've heard nothing but good things! Can't wait till Tuesday to pick it up.
@SetupDisk they must not be playing anything new, cause there are bugs in a lot of games, heck even old games.... What a sad life I tell ya
These overreactions. Again:
1) Either update before playing... or
2) Finish before updating...or
probably wait for 1.03
I've had the PS4 physical version since Monday. So far I've not suffered the patch issues. (But the 1.02 patch is paused on my console). But looking what they are saying it's gonna be start another save file
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Sounds like they're not gonna patch it or fix the issues. Just recommend people restart. But they give a chance to correct what you messed up on your first play through...
@NintendoFan4Lyf Same! Such a shame that it's missed the 18th launch on Switch because I'm leaving the country on Monday for a trip and would have loved it for the flight.
@BensonUii Actually you will be safe in the future. Because the game can be 100% finished off the cart. The update is the problem.
@Kalmaro Because you bought a game that is unplayable?
@StevenG But most people can play fine, I thought. We even have people who git the physical copy apparently and beat the game.
And here I was sad about choosing to go with the switch version, instead now it looks like I avoided some headaches from the PS4 version I had thought about doing for my digital copy from the kickstarter.
@BensonUii As I read it the problem occurs if you made progress in the game and THEN update to 1.02.
There are many streamers that got physical copies days before the launch of the game and they beat it without the update.
I saw no major issues apart from 1-2 crashes.
I ordered digital thinking it was an eShop only game not even realizing there was a physical edition. Now I'm bummed, realizing there is....
Shoddy work ehh? I really wish companies would not do this. I'm afraid for the quality of the game of they have such nonsense problems...
This game is still a thing? Oh right, it just came out. Huh. Okay. I guess I'll check out the review once it's up. I'm sure the bug will be fixed quickly enough.
@NEStalgia Nintendo should really get an online purchase refund policy going. In this day it's unacceptable. If you don't even have the game yet you should be able to refund and buy physically.
@XBontendo Yep.
I just ended up double dipping. Best Buy has a Steel Book that Amazon doesn't list....and since I still have GCU until November, it was $32 for the game and steel book....ah well. I can leave it shrink wrapped as a collectors item now.... shrug
The build of the game that went onto discs may have been technically playable, but the "day-one" patch has been referred to as significant and the 505 marketing guys were urging people to not play it until it was updated. They said there were many improvements to the game play with the update. I don't like the idea of them putting such a build of the game on the physical discs. In my opinion, the best version for people to get would be the GOG digital. Without DRM, you really own the game once you download the installer, and you can keep different versions too. I wonder if they knew about this bug, but it doesn't look good for launch week. It'll be a success, regardless.
Edit: just seeing some comments now saying the stock 1.01 version the cart is playable if you don’t update it, so guess I spoke too soon.
I’m still peeved about Hollow Knight though - that game and DLC was released many months ago! It should’ve been polished and ready to play after sticking in the cartridge, instead of having to wait for a huge update to download. I hope Celeste doesn’t disappoint similarly.
Ugh that will be 2 carts in a row that I’ve bought that need huge day one patches before they operate (this and Hollow Knight).
One day, the patches will no longer be available and my carts will be bricked. The industry just doesn’t care about the consumer rights of bitter old customers like me who believe in PURCHASING and OWNING a product. The future is streaming and damn is it looking bleak.
I'll cross this off my list!
@Teksetter Sorry but did you even read the article?
The problem is the UPDATE not the version of the cart! The problem is if you play with the install version only and THEN update.
I just saw that about the Hollow Knight version. I wonder if I should cancel my Pre-Order.
@StevenG Good luck finding a lawyer dumb enough to take up that case
@Gs69 Really? People are gushing over this game. Where have you heard negativity?
@Teksetter The game works fine if you don't update. It only breaks if you start at 1.0 and update to 1.0.2. It doesn't NEED a patch.
@Zuljaras
Yes, sorry, I did read the entire article. I’m quite conscientious about that before posting anything.
Reading left me with the impression the pre-loaded version on the cart was susceptible to the bug, hence the devs advising us to update before playing.
I just should’ve read the other comments first for context!
@Teksetter Btw I contacted my retailer for the pre-order of Hollow Knight and I told them that I would wait month or two for the complete cartridge to arrive instead of taking the one without the one DLC.
They agreed and now I would wait couple of months for the complete game
@Zuljaras
Well done! I’m glad you had a cooperative retailer helping you. I’m in the States and preordered thru Fangamer. I popped it in upon delivery and have been loving it except for the initial 15min update!
I think I’m stuck with my copy, though...
I just started this on GOG Tuesday will it affect the game? From what I played the DS games are still the best.
@Rpg-lover Thanks for that. Get out of the wrong side of bed did you today?
@ramu-chan You did call the music generic. Pretty much everyone is saying the music is really good.
Also I’d argue it resembles Aria of Sorrow more than SotN.
@Anri02 Is called an opinion.
I cancelled my preorder yesterday after seeing some reviews mentioning required grinding. I’m not totally against this game, but with the bugs and the fact that so many great games are out right now I think I’m better off waiting. I’ll grab it on sale at some point. Given that I’m about 8 hours into Hollow Knight, and Mario is out next Friday I think I’m good for now.
That’s not a good look right at launch. I’ll wait a bit before buying this - I’ll still get it though, I miss my Metroidvania fix.
@Abes3
I searched for this, as I prefer to keep the cartridge version of a game un-patched if possible just so that I can play the exact same game on different systems, or if I ever have the system reset for some reason and lose the patches or something..
Anyway, unfortunately it seems that the patch is pretty important, as they released the 1.0 game with pretty much half-assed unbalanced contend. Some weapons / items / skills were too over-powered and you can supposedly kill a lot of bosses way too easily, and also upgrade or obtain pretty high-level stuff easily / for cheap, making the rest seem redundant or useless.. so the patch is the one real true game balance. And that sucks. Why did they release the game with a "whatever" general balancing after so much time under development? Quite disappointing.
Watched a Livestream play of it yesterday, looks pretty average. Disappointing as I was keen on it.
Yet another reason to go digital and never look back. Now you have an unbalanced version sitting in a cart that has a broken and incomplete Version of the game. Digital is the future. The end.
So the update wasn't fixing anything in the game, it is actually harming it? So why do we need the update if the original plays just fine? Does the multiple delays for this game not finalize anything anymore?
Let me guess the update's purpose was to make the game feel broken. Why would you release a game complete then made an update to purposely corrupt it? I don't get this mentality with game publisher, if the game is already complete, let it stay complete. No update is needed if it's already complete. That is unless the original is buggy as craps and needs fixing but according to streamers it didn't need one so what gives?
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Yeah but what if update 1.03 brick it even worst? If the new update brick the old save, what makes you think the new one won't do the same. The game was great the way it was, there was no need to release an update but here they go release one anyways and problems arise.
@Tendogamerxxx The version on the cartridge wasn't the problem, a lot of early Youtubers who got the game early were able to playthrough it in full and completed the game. It's the updated version that cause the problem.
Somehow a minor alteration cause the game to lose progression due to a missing item cause it was originally there on the cart but the update altered that either at a new location or area within the game causing players who did update unable to obtain that item which prevented them from progressing.
If you bought the cartridge version and didn't update then that's how the game was truly suppose to be play. Getting the update means you're playing an altered version. An altered version doesn't mean superior, it's the same game just with minor changes.
@retro_player_22 Just a guess. I guess the devs are also not happy with this situation. I assume they will be more diligent in the future .
@Gs69 Dude the lowest score I've seen is an 8 and they also totally loved it. I've seen a 10 and a 9.5 amongst many other positive reviews. One Youtuber gave it a 11/10!. I've even heard of people saying it's not just a great SOTN homage but surpasses it in many ways. This is from people who know their metroidvania's stating it surpasses one of the finest ever made.
I too thought it'd be a disaster with all the development issues, but it looks like we have a new masterpiece on our hands.
For that, who cares about the need for a one-day patch. Enjoy your pre-order mate.
@brunojenso I’m really looking forward to it to be honest think I overreacted as deep down I don’t want to be disappointed I haven’t cancelled the preorder I’m looking forward to it mate
@Gs69 Cool. Someone on this tread just gave it a 6/10 I noticed, so who knows. Horses for courses I guess. I really thought it was going to be even more of a disaster than Mighty No.9 was - so I was positively caught of guard when I started finding amazing reviews. Anyway I hope it's your cup of tea.
@Gs69 I pre-ordered the game digitally for my Switch and I already bought the PlayStation version for my PS4 Pro and I've been playing non-stop.
The game is a masterpiece and it's so addicted and fun, I advise you to try it and play it yourself and don't listen to others.
I don't care what others say.
This game is a 10/10 for me, a masterpiece.
@Moonwalker-1986 I’m excited to try it just a few days to wait for me now
Received my physical copy today!!
Updated straight away, a big 1.2gb patch, but now it's saying that it's version 1.01, so that's no good is it? I need 1.02 which doesn't seem to be available for Switch right now.
Does anyone know when 1.02 is coming for Switch? Any advice? This means if I start playing now on 1.01, my progress is going to be halted when 1.02 drops?! I've got the game, finally, but I still can't play it?!!
@RupeeClock No 1.02 patch available on Switch yet.......
@Gs69 Have you received your copy? No 1.02 patch....
@SuperRetroArt
Likely because the official release digitally is tomorrow.
I'm expecting my copy of the game on Friday or Monday next week, as I pre-ordered from 365Games
It might also be that the patch version numbering differs for the Switch from other platforms.
@SuperRetroArt not out yet so not got the game it says Friday 28th in the Uk physical i mean
@Gs69 pretty sure it's now the 25th for release so you might get it tomorrow!!
@RupeeClock that's a good point about the version numbering. I'm trying to get an official answer. Would be nice to know before I invest loads of hours.
@SuperRetroArt oh mint that’s a nice surprise I have a day off tomorrow as well so hope it arrives early
Here we go again...
