Publisher 3D Realms has lifted the lid on its latest project, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, a retro first-person shooter built using the tech from 1996's Quake. The best news? It's coming to Switch.
You can see the first glimpse of the game in the trailer above; 3D Realms says that it "embraces the timeless elements of classic titles such as DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Unreal and Hexen and carries them into the 21st century".
The title has been developed by KillPixel, a team made up of Quake scene veterans, and has players exploring ancient crypts, sunken ruins, corrupted temples and howling forests to kill everything in sight. If you want to know a little more, check out this quick description and mighty feature list below:
"You are Outlander. Once adrift upon the Ageless Sea, you now find yourself on the shores of a dying world. From the consuming darkness emerges a figure cloaked in white, the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, who burdens you with the task of hunting down the remaining Guardians of the Old World. You must journey into the vast gloom to explore ancient ruins, discover forgotten secrets and battle the horrors that lurk within."
FEATURES:
- Explore a vast world shrouded in darkness, passionately crafted by the hands of expert Quake scene necromancers.
- Traverse 3 hubs and 15 enormous, interconnected levels crawling with hordes of enemies, lore and ancient secrets.
- Forge your path with an arsenal of 9 deadly weapons, each with multiple fire modes.
- Know your enemy. Many horrors lurk in the shadows, thirsting for your blood.
- Artifacts of great power lay hidden in the dark places of the world. Find them and dominate your enemies.
- Powered by the Legendary Quake 1 Tech, WRATH is an authentic, classic FPS in every way.
- Capped at 666 fps, WRATH will melt your soul and your Voodoo 2... But it's okay. Software Rendering is supported!
- Create your own worlds. WRATH is built from the ground up to be easily moddable. Make your own levels, weapons and characters. From day one, the very tools used to create WRATH will be available for all.
- Gib your friends in classic Multiplayer modes, powered by the renowned QuakeWorld netcode.
- Dominate the world of WRATH with 3 other companions in 4 player co-op, LAN or online!
- Immerse yourself in a haunting soundscape born from the twisted minds of Andrew Hulshult (Quake Champions, Rise of the Triad, Dusk and Amid Evil) and Bjorn Jacobson (CyberPunk 2077, Hitman, EVE Online).
The game is set to launch on PC this summer, with Switch and other consoles expected to join in the fun early next year.

You can tell its from the 1996 Quake engine, to be honest I kinda like it
This looks amazingly cool to me and I can't quite say why...
That looks amazing.
Seems like a great game for Quake fans.
As long as the price is right, I'd absolutely be all over this.
All those decades in Quakeworld will finally pay off.
Reminds me, I still want to give Dusk a go; another retro-inspired FPS with a similar engine to Quake. I'm loving the idea of the local Co-Op mode for Wrath too!
I wish they would bring Hexen back. Even on the N64 it sure was a blast!
My eyes hurt... Not for me
Damn this looks good!
Count me in fo shizzle.
I am so up for this.
Hell yeah. Can't wait. Hope its a super smooth 60fps for switch with solid online gameplay.
I'll be into this. Just need to remember to play it in shorter doses. I beat most of DOOM on Switch in a sitting and thought my eyes were going to bleed from all the red on screen.
No regrets.
I've been hankering for these types of games since my childhood, so I'm in.
@pjzelda
Given the engine and graphical fidelity, it looks like it'll run at whatever the maximum framerate the Switch can output is.
Can the Switch even do 120 FPS output? It can probably process at and beyond that based on the software, but curious if video output is restricted to 60 FPS.
So hyped for this, a day one purchase for me
Multiplayer! I'm totally in, still play Team Arena
Totally badass!
The original Quake was always my favorite s game is kind of dark isnt it?
I hope this game helps 3D Realms out of the position that Duke Nukem Forever put them in.
Times have really changed.... games are now being advertised as "using 20-year old technology"!
Yes please! I really enjoy the old school fps. My favorite to this day is still Doom 64
Hey. this looks interesting. count me in
Give it some 60fps polish, price it right a z as have ourselves a winner
@MagnaRoader if this doesn’t reach constant 60 FPS, someone is not pulling their weight with the coding 😉
Do you like the 90s FPS games? Me: Yes!
Do you like Quake/Doom/Wolfenstein? Me: Yes!
Do you like 3D Realms? Me: Yes!
Is this some you're interested in: Yes, it is!
SOLD!
I'll be playing it on PC but I'm hella hyped for its release.
Now this looks enjoyable!
@pjzelda your hoping lol
Now I’m wanting some Quake I and II on my Switch but remastered...
Not coming until early next year? That's a bit disappointing, but the game looks promising! Hopefully we will get dates soon for Ion Maiden and Dusk on switch as well. I also wish more FPS games nowadays had local co-op.
I’m down! Although I do seem to hit a plateau with these kinds of games, wolfensteinn 2 and doom, just get bored about 70% in. Fun while it lasts though.
@Steevil Because ‘90s shooters were the pinnacle
Games With only "low settings" is now a "feature" 🙃
I mean You got to love the efficiency developers are training people to except as little as possible From them.
Those hulking blade guys are scary fast for their size
Hope this allows for level editing (on PC)
@Braok Probably get both versions if it’s good
Looks awesome, I will keep an eye on this game. Hopefully we get some info on dusk soon!
Nice! Gonna keep an eye on this one.
Love the mention of Voodoo 2 in the description! Had one of those back in the days.
Maybe a port of shadow warrior is on its way! You no mess with Lo Wang!
3D Realms has finally returned to their roots, and I'm loving it.
@pjzelda
hehe. if the switch can't pull of a quake engine game at 60fps then N is done.
I've been asking for way too low of a frame rate all these years! I didn't know any game could run at 666fps! Yay!
Hell yes!
Hexen with guns is what this is. Preorder now!!!!
Um, yes please!
That's why I love you. And now Duke Nukem!
@Bunkerneath I think it looks more like the original Unreal engine? Either way, I'm keeping an eye on this and Dusk.
I really want Duke Nukem 3D World Tour on Switch.
@sword_9mm lol. True that. I've been blemished with the 30 < fps first person shooters I've played on the system but those are obviously much more graphically intense than a Quake engine game
SO beyond hyped... 😍
Class! Was about to say co-op or no-op. And then I saw it 😍 game looks like serious fun!
I'm wondering if this part will make it onto consoles, including Switch:
If so, this could be a lot of fun. Looking forward to seeing/hearing more about it!
Love the look of this one. Will definitely get it on PC but might get it on Switch too if I like it. Same with Dusk.
Now bring Hellbound, Ion Maiden, Prodeus and Amid Evil too.
Edit: Just read that Prodeus, Amid Evil and Ion Maiden are coming to Switch!! Happy days.
Looks awesome, as long as they don’t want Resident Evil 4 money for it and they’ve got gyro aiming like Doom this should be great fun.
I loved the original Doom as a kid. I never really got a chance to play Quake though. But this looks something I could get for nostalgia. But am I the only one who would love a wolfenstein 3D / Spear of destiny - style game on the switch? Or then ports of the originals.
I enjoy seeing this after they also did a Build Engine game.
They're having good fun with it, even if the fathers of the two engines were considered mortal enemies at the time.
I do wish they would release these games on a shareware model, in the proud tradition of id Software and Apogee.
This looks Amazing. Hoping for online multiplayer and motion aiming too. Quake was one of the first online shooters I played so I have very fond memories of this style of graphics.
Oh so guess who’s downloading this? ::raises hand::
Next year for Switch, tho... 😞
Ah it’s 1997 all over...
Good times.
Such a nostalgic, im definitely buying this
Love it. Want it. Need it.
@Ralek85 This was exactly what I was thinking while watching the trailer. Loved Hexen and Hexen II.
"I ain't afraid of no Quake" -Duke Nukem
Just give me Blood (original), with multiplayer, on the switch. Best game ever.
@CurryPowderKeg79 So you base your interest in games on other people's opinions?
Give me gyro aiming and I'm sold.
This looks good, looking forward to it
looks good so far!
@CurryPowderKeg79 Ah, but pain from a shotwound is universal, whereas the enjoyment of a game is highly subjective.
Also, you have experienced penetration of your skin previously in life, so you can understand that it will hurt even without people telling you.
this graphic style + elderscrolls would be something id like.
Just been playing this and its amazing, any fan of Q1 NEEDS to check this out
