According to Kotaku UK - which has consulted sources close to the project - we'll be getting a Spyro the Dragon Trilogy Remaster this year similar in scope to the wildly-successful Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
The games included will be Spyro the Dragon, Ripto's Rage!, and Year of the Dragon, and there's a chance that new content will make the cut. As with Crash, the package will boast vastly improved visuals and enhanced gameplay mechanics, such as a new save system. Vicarious Visions is handling the work, the same studio which produced the Crash remaster.
The trilogy will apparently be announced for PlayStation 4 in March this year, with a Q3 release. In 2019 it will then come to other consoles when Sony's exclusivity period ends. Given that Crash is rumoured to be coming to Switch, one would hope that this (unconfirmed) package will also make the leap.

Meh. Just like Crash in the sense that it was pretty fun when I was a kid but I have no real desire to go back and play the games again.
R.I.P. PlayStation
In all seriousness, I'm not too enthused about Crash or Spyro on Switch as neither franchise has done anything that Nintendo hasn't done better (I would still consider them though), but I do miss the abundance of 3D platformers of the late 90s. I feel that Nintendo has taken a huge step back by only producing 2D platformers for their major franchises bar Mario.
I've never played Spyro or Crash Bandicoot and looking at gameplay footage of Crash, I don't think I missed anything.
Spyro is something that I loved as a kid. If it does come this year and then to other platforms next year it would be awesome to play Spyro on the Switch.
Didn't really care about Crash, but Spyro was cool. Might buy it just to play the skateboarding parts lol.
Awesome to hear, I hope this ends up being true. While I do prefer Mario over Spyro, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy my time with the original PS1 game back in the day. I'd buy this collection day one, I guess it's just a matter if I finally buy a PS4 by then or not (I've wanted a PS4 all last year, but didn't get one due to spending money on college, rent, the Switch, and a new laptop) since waiting until 2019 sounds painful!
Awesome rumor. Would love love Spyro on Switch
I have had my fingers crossed for this and crash remake for a while now. loved them when I was younger. Be good games for the wife to play too ( good excuses for a second switch )
Nah,was rubbish back in the day.
Just need a Tombi and Klonoa collection now.
I would love this. Crash and Spyro on my Switch yes please!
If I was Sony I would have stopped paying too!
I would love to play both Spyro and Crash on the Switch, on the go. I mean, I could have them on the PS4, but frankly playing games on my PS4 now just kinda feels like I am chained to the TV, but with the Switch I feel free. Play on TV, in the bathroom, on the train, and at the cafe. I do all of that often. I remember enjoying both Spyro and Crash as a kid, so would probably enjoy a remaster now.
FFS would you please all stop buying the same games over and over.
The market is totally awash with ports and remakes/remasters.
Hah !
Eat that, Sony !
Switch Domination !
Love it. I might just get it on PS for old school purposes. But I wouldn't mind double dipping for both on switch and my ps4
If I can play the Crash and Spyro remasters on my Switch I think I can die happy.
@Mr_Pepperami Oh god yes! A Klonoa collection on Switch would be so cool. Never played Tombi/Tomba but I've heard many good things about it.
And is it just me, or does the Spyro pictured above look kinda creepy? He used to be cute.
They hung in Mario 64's shadow back then, next to Odyssey they can only rely on nostalgia for sales IMO. Hope they do well but unless its a very very good price I will pass.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
You're right there. Going back to them there's nothing there worth revisiting if there's no nostalgia factor. Nintendo has all the platformers of this kind it needs.
Pushes nerd glasses up
You used the wrong image for the article. That's for another Spyro trilogy.
Just replayed the PSOne trilogy for the millionth time this week, Absolutely love them and honestly, I'd get a remade trilogy for the PS4 and Switch when it releases later. I would absolutely love to have the games on the Switch.
@Anti-Matter Don’t worry I’ll be playing the Secret of Mana Remake on my PSVita tomorrow .
@gcunit If you’re not interested don’t buy them. Plenty of new games coming out every week.
I for one look forward to finally playing Spyro, such as I got to experience SOTC for the first time last week.
Meh
@Anti-Matter I thought you hated all games in Sony's library. What's with the hypocrisy?
I enjoyed Spyro way more than Crash, so this is good news..
@G_M
I have PS2 Slim + some ps2 games at home.
I also have 8 PS4 games.
Well, just a few...
But, i prefer those games on Switch.
So i don't have to be hooked on TV all the time.
Like Crash, some of those Spyro games are better than what Mario has done. Looking at you 3D Land and 3D World.
Will buy both the Crash trilogy and this if/when they release on Switch.
I have zero nostalgia for Crash or Spyro since I only had a PS1 for about 2 years, and that was to play FFVII, which I never beat. My neighbors had a PS for a while and I would watch them play Crash amd Spyro, which seemed okay at best. Since I've never been much of a PS guy, this doesn't seem that interesting to me, but I guess for some people the idea of Spyro and Crash on Switch seems cool.
I never played Spyro back in the day. Is it as linear as Crash? Because if so, no thanks.
Oh man Year of the Dragon was one of my favorite games ever. It was the first game I ever got to 100%, or should I say a bit more.
I'm hoping this is true. The Crash remasters were excellent, so I'm all for Spyro getting the same treatment.
If this ends up being true, I'm going to flip out, I LOVED Spyro when I was younger and would still have a blast with a newer game today.
1. I don't own a PS or PS4.
2. I've never played Spyro.
3. My wife played the first few games at her friend's house constantly as a kid.
Conclusion: come 2019, I'm definitely buying this for her, just so I can watch the child-like joy on her face as she plays through these again and maybe she'll let me have a turn or two. 😁
I’d have both on Switch if they’re good. We’ll see.
Played all three Spyro games back in the day on PS1. Might have to check these out. I bet my kids would love them.
Hope the Crash games will get the scores they really deserve once they'll be released outside of PS4. Sony is the worst reviews buyer.
@ricklongo
More like collect a thon like Rare platformers.
@bitleman
You had that bad of an experience with Crash? That's a shame.
Both Spyro and Crash remasters are must buys for me if they come to Switch.
Getting this day one on PS4 and Would get it a second time day one on Switch as well. The three Spyro games on PS1 are some of my favorites of all time and this is what I wanted as soon as they announced the Crash remakes.
I'm sure I'm in the minority on this site, but I'll argue the PS1 Spyro games are better than any platformers on the N64
@gcunit
Sort of agree with you there, except that Crash Trilogy was a bona fide remake, which I'm all for in this age of lazy remasters (some of which barely qualify for that title)
Would buy this and Crash day 1.
@gcunit Quite easy to ignore if they aren't your thing. And I can easily see this being a collection those who didn't have a PS to play Spyro back in the day or are of completely different generation of gaming
@Luffymcduck That's good to know. Will definitely give it consideration then.
Wtf is their an exclusivity deal? Is Sony really that afraid that people will buy it on Switch instead of PS4 had the game came out on both at the same time? Cause if that's the case then Sony better improve their marketing more cause the PS4 is garbage at this point.
I didn't have a PS1 growing up, but I always brought Pizza Hut's demo discs over to my cousin's place to play whatever games were on them, and Spyro was one of my favorites on those discs. I can't wait to finally get a chance to play the full games! That said, I'll be getting this on PS4, day one!
@noobish_hat great games also super easy for the first 2 the 3rd has some more difficulty at the end. so plenty of time.
@sillygostly what about Metroid? also with Kirby's infinite flying it would be a bad idea for 3d kirby games.
My GF used to play a Spyro game for the GameCube (I don't remember which), but if this comes to the Switch, I'll definitely pick it up for her.
@MuteOtus based on its look thats the 2nd incarnation of spyro called the legend of spyro. The series was aweful for its 3 games and was nonstop grinding like mad.
@ricklongo nothing like crash these were free roam games and lots of exploring.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Crash 2 was a lot of fun, and I would still reccomend it. The other Crash games are... just okay. You're not missing much with Spyro though.
That said, I would still like to give Spyro: Year of the Dragon a chance since I never played it as a kid.
I'd probably do what I used to do on the PS1: Load up the Hurricos level on Ripto's Rage and have the music as a soundtrack for whatever I was doing around the house.
I heard good things about Spyro, but never had a PS1. My 4-year-old son seems about the right age for Spyro (he loved Odyssey and 3D Land), so I welcome it.
I have a feeling that the crash series will come on the switch. With a new audience and millions of switch players. They want to see how much this sells.
Spyro was a comedic game with nice worlds and good segments; It would be a good game to remaster as long as they fix the charging mechanic and the flying minigames without changing the overworlds too much.
I will be over the moon if this is real and happening! Original spyro was my favourite and crash was my wife's. Here's hoping for a happy 2019!
@-DG original Spyro trilogy beats the denim shorts off crash. That is completely objective fact
Good that Spyro is back..
But this isn't Nintendo news..
@Minfinity I always prefered Crash tbh. Plus going beyond the trilogy games, Crash had CTR. The only go-kart game to out-kart Mario Kart.
@-DG Everyone to their own. Outside the PS1 trilogy, it's definitely fair that Crash has a nicer legacy. I liked crash, but I always found the world's to have more character and more variety in Spyro. That and I enjoy more open levels than linear. Tastes are tastes though. I would love to see either come to switch and will get them both
@Minfinity Oh yeah, Spyro definitely was on a grander scale when you consider the world the game was built in. I personally liked Spyro 2, and I'd happily buy a trilogy collection. I just feel like for people who didn't grow up with the series the games would probably come off as just, "okay" instead of "great" the way we remember.
As for Crash, I feel like those games would still be fun even if you didn't grow up with them, but I could be wrong.
Spyro, crash, yoshi, kirby... I pretty much left all of that behind. Mario, rayman and Ratchet and Clank only games still willing to pay for.
Two great series, can’t wait to play Spyro again
@sillygostly I don't know. I think Nintendo is doing okay keeping a balance of both type alive. I feel bad that Sony isn't doing the same with series like Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, and Jak. I have said this before and I will say it again, Sony should have kept on growing their franchises like a family so that they can always remain in the minds of adults and kids.
I like how they produce new type of games but I am sure everyone can agree that seeing sequels to characters you love is great too.
I think I have some dim memories of playing both Spyro and Crash Bandicoot at my friend's house as a kid since I've never had a PlayStation. I did have a Spyro game for my GBA, but it got permanently lost at some point.
I'd like to have them so I could really play some games I missed for the most part.
what exlusivity? this is on xbox too..onlt thing it hasnt come out for is pc and switch, which is totaly odd..
