The Japanese Media Create chart results are out, and it proved to be a relatively quiet week in the market - there are some reasonable results for Nintendo, nonetheless.
Starting with software we have Middle-earth: Shadow of War taking top spot on PS4, though its actual sales numbers weren't great in what was a slow week all around. The rest of the top five includes some evergreen titles, though there may be some disappointment with the performance of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions and particularly Fire Emblem Warriors, which have both failed to add too much to modest launch sales. Further down we have Lost Sphear, a spiritual successor to I Am Setsuna; it did better on PS4 but still only managed four figures, while it took 9th place with 5,770 sales on Switch.
- [PS4] Middle-earth: Shadow of War (Warner Bros., 10/12/17) – 20,144 (New)
- [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo, 07/21/17) – 19,622 (1,232,523)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04,28,17) – 13,321 (747,454)
- [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo, 10/05/17) – 12,215 (38,003)
- [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Nintendo, 09/22/17) – 8,367 (97,135)
- [PS4] Lost Sphear (Square Enix, 10/12/17) – 7,363 (New)
- [PS4] FIFA 18 (Limited Editions and Bundles Included) (Electronic Arts, 09/29/17) – 6,703 (75,791)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 6,088 (610,953)
- [NSW] Lost Sphear (Square Enix, 10/12/17) – 5,770 (New)
- [PS4] No Heroes Allowed! VR (SIE, 10/14/17) – 5,457 (New)
- [PS4] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III (Limited Edition Included) (Falcom, 09/28/17) – 5,457 (105,298)
- [PS4] Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (Konami, 09/14/17) – 4,307 (102,018)
- [PS4] Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 (Ubisoft, 10/05/17) – 4,093 (14,919)
- [NSW] Fire Emblem Warriors (Nintendo, 09/28/17) – 4,016 (53,531)
- [NSW] Monster Hunter XX (Capcom, 08/25/17) – 3,966 (155,634)
- [3DS] The Snack World: Trejarers (Level-5, 08/10/17) – 3,939 (180,898)
- [NSW] Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco, 09/07/17) – 3,815 (44,239)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 3,659 (1,741,582)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf Amiibo+ (Nintendo, 11/23/16) – 3,497 (253,665)
- [PSV] Yoshiwara Higanbana: Kuon no Chigiri (Prototype, 10/12/17) – 3,396 (New)
In terms of hardware we see a continuation of recent trends, with the Switch staying comfortably on top and increasing its sales slightly; the New 2DS LL and New 3DS LL (XL) swap places but still sit 3rd and 4th. Results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- Switch – 40,803 (38,204)
- PlayStation 4 – 16,933 (16,680)
- New 2DS LL – 10,569 (8,534)
- New 3DS LL – 8,369 (12,658)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 5,773 (5,869)
- PlayStation Vita – 3,938 (3,545)
- 2DS – 1,565 (1,594)
- New 3DS – 242 (265)
- Xbox One – 71 (186)
- PlayStation 3 – 65 (72)
- Wii U – 58 (45)
A rather quiet week, overall, and Nintendo may be slightly disappointed with the low momentum of a couple of recent game releases - in terms of hardware, though, there's plenty for the Kyoto-based company to celebrate.

Splatoon 2 still clocking dollars
I love Nintendo Switch! Just wanted to say that.
Splatoon 2 is kicking arse in Japan.
5k, Ouch! I plan on getting Lost Sphear on Switch. But it's launch is sandwiched between NinoKuni2 and MH World in the States... So won't be till much later on.
Splatoon 2 is amazing. This week it sold around 50% as many copies as Switches, so I'd guess a lot of people are treating it as the 'go to game' for the system.
Rough launch for Lost Sphear, although the game's supposedly small budget maybe makes it okay?
Either way, I definitely plan to get it when it comes to the Americas.
Ha Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is nowhere to be seen. Guess it didn't make a huge splash after all. Also the PS4 version of Dragon Quest XI is gone from the chart as well, if there's a Switch version in the works Square Enix better get that out soon cause the 3DS version is barely hanging now.
Disappointed? Three of the top five games are for Switch and one for 3DS. I see no problems here...
Even though it would have been nice to see the game sell better, it doesn't surprise me. Myself, I wasn't too impressed with the footage that I've seen of it. I do, however, hope that Project Octopath sells far better! I'm hoping that the release of the demo ends up fueling interest in it because, from what I played, it has a ton of potential!
Remember when it was a "great week" when Wii U sold more than 10K in Japan?
Question.
Will Lost Sphear Nintendo Switch USA version released on January 2018 ?
And just like that, FIFA 18 on Switch has disappeared from the chart. Bye!!!
Dreadful sales of Lost Sphear on PS4 and Switch. Software sales for the whole week were terrible. Splatoon 2, even now, nearly reached number 1, that's how bad they are.
@Anti-Matter yep 23rd

@yeayeanaynay yeah I kind of agree I mean I enjoyed I am Setsuna, most definitely wasn't the $40 stunner I thought it was going to be thank God I got it on sale for the switch and I might just do the same for Lost Sphear. At least it has various locales and not the same drab monotone look throughout the entire game world.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Uh huh....
I think your negativity here is terrible for Real.
Btw, have you planned your Switch games to buy better than complaining every single Switch games ?!
Nintendolife's ability to find correct adjective for sales numbers remains modest.
Slow week for software sales.
Those Splatoon 2 numbers are very impressive. Mario Kart 8 and Pokken doing well too.
Switch did 1,593 less than PS4. That is a very good result when you compare all the PS4's out in Japan to Switches.
Edit: I'm talking about Lost Sphear.
@Tsurii it’s tracking ahead of 3d land so I would say pretty darn good
Also Splatoon2 and Mario Kart 8 keep selling and DQ11 keeps charting on 3DS while the PS4 version is nowhere to be found.
It's almost like everybody is saving their money for a different Nintendo game that is about to come out. What could that be?
Slightly dumbstruck by the fact the ageing Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 port is selling almost as well as FE Warriors. Not great for Ninty, but mighty impressive for Bamco.
RIP Fifa 18 on Switch. Sold pretty okay and now it's gone with the wind.
Wow. Slow week.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Media Create only tracks physical sales and Lost Sphear is more likely to be picked up digitally due to it's exclusivity to online stores (not a game one is able to purchase off a store shelf)? Is this not the case in Japan?
If true, this would greatly influence the numbers presented by Media Create.
Lost Sphear looks waaay better than I Am Setsuna, and I Am Setsuna was already a decent game. I have a physical copy preordered.
@southpaw185
Lost Sphear got a physical release in Japan. It's also getting a physical release in the west, thouhh it's exclusive to the Square Enix Online Store.
@JaxonH
Exactly, the physical version isn't exactly as readily available as many other games released. Gematsu reported that the physical version was only available via Amazon and Square Enix Store.
Either way I'm hyped. The game is reviewing well in Amazon Japan (well known troll reviewers aside). I have to think the imminent release of SMO is hindering people from purchasing other titles at the moment.
Edit: @Anti-Matter made it known that it is available elsewhere, so I stand corrected.
wow didn't realize it was out already. Still working on the demo...keep getting distracted by other games.
Can’t wait for Super Mario Odyssey. Think it’s gonna do great numbers
@southpaw185
I found Lost Spear Switch Japan version can be bought from playasia.com
https://www.play-asia.com/lost-sphear/13/70b9jx
@Anti-Matter
You're right. I guess I read my source wrong. Thanks for the clarification.
As a PS4 and Switch gamer myself, this makes for good news!
Launch/LTD sales of all 3D Mario games:
Super Mario 64: 162,000 / 1.649 million
Super Mario Sunshine: 280,000 / 780,000
Super Mario Galaxy: 256,000 / 1.026 million
Super Mario Galaxy 2: 338,00 / 1.046 million
Super Mario 3D Land: 345,000 / 2.111 million (physical only)
Super Mario 3D World: 107,000 / 614,000 (physical only)
Hardware sales:
Switch: 40,803
ALL other platforms combined: 47,744
Yep, too bad, the Switch fails hard...
Nintendo platforms combined: 61,593
All other platforms combined: 26,780
Oh my, Nintendo is so doomed...
Looked like a good hardware week, software not so much. Thinking FE and Mario & Luigi haven't been marketed enough.
@retro_player_22
Yep and fifa switch fell of a cliff, new games enter and old games, well you know the rest, just the way it is unless they have good legs
@Krull Dragon Ball having legs makes sense given that series is really popular again thanks to Super. There's more interest than before.
It's a pretty solid port too.
@JunkRabbit Absolutely shocking. Pathetic performance by Nintendo in its home country. They're a mere husk these days, it's quite sad to see.
How can new leaf still be in the top 20?? XD
@WiltonRoots
Nice, fair play, say it as it is, also very true. Maybe the Japanese market has changed, what with mobile gaming on the rise. I love Japanese games but nowadays they are pretty much low level budget games that don't need to sell many to turn a profit for some of these crap devs. they all seem to be knocking out many crap games, all the Japanese devs are guilty of this including Nintendo, Amiibo festival springs to mind
@Krull I was about to comment the same thing. It seems that FE Warriors isn't doing to hot in Japan. That's especially interesting since it had a month's headstart over odyssey and still isn't doing too well
And watch Mario absolutely dominate next week....
The Switch is still selling almost 40K a week on a slow week in Japan alone. I can't wait to hear global sales. I estimate it's in the 6-8 million range, considering it was over 4 million in July.
Bad promotion for lost sphear? Switch don't have another RPG.
Strangely PS4 at Japan isn't a huge hit like in rest of the world. Its got a lousy start and its doing ok now but not great. Konami should release pro evolution soccer on Switch already
Lost Sphear just looks so meh.....
That screenshot looks exactly like the location in Setsuna minus the snow.
Whooosh...
