Super Metroid has a really great atmospheric soundtrack, and it's one of the most environmentally detailed video games there is, and the visuals are all very nice. But the best part is looking through every nook and cranny to find as many secrets as possible that will help further your survival.
@tbd Ha ha, I just recently discovered it, sorry. I know I'm kind of almost two decades late to the party, but I just wanted to make a little thread about it, to maybe discuss it in anticipation of Other M. Anyway, I am now up against the epicness that is Kraid, any pointers?
I finally got this game on VC shortly before the release of Metroid Prime Trilogy. I've beaten it 3 or 4 times since then. Blast a missile at Kraid's face, then a super missile when he opens his mouth. When he first appears on the screen he will open his mouth without you shooting at him, you can blast some super missiles in his face then. 3 Super Missiles will kill him.
I've beaten the game twice, and on the second playthrough I've found more stuff and beat it in slightly less time (but I only got the ending with Samus removing her helmet, twice).
Thanks for the tips guys I actually beat him about five or six hours ago (second try; the first I forgot to refill energy tanks and super missiles). Kraid is such a wimp. He looks ferocious and imposing and whatnot but can't walk the talk. I still enjoyed the battle. Also, Super Metroid is going to go down as having one of my favorite video game soundtracks because the atmosphere it creates is phenomenal.
@mecoy - I agree that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is an awesome game; even though it's got nothing to do with Metroid, other than the Metroidvania-style gameplay element.
I'm willing to give it another chance (I mean...I bought it after all...may as well get my money's worth...) but I'm not optimistic that I'll enjoy it more. I gave it a proper chance and...I dunno, I guess it's just not my thing. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the 2D Metroids overall...even as a kid they left me a little cold.
I absolutely adore the Prime series, however...I saw that as an enormous step forward for the franchise, and it'll be interesting to see if Other M turns out to appeal more to the 2D fans or the Prime-era late bloomers like me.

To be honest with you, I had that same feeling before. I was a bit overwhelmed at first. I took a break for a while, then played it again just for fun. A few minutes into the game, I was kicking alien butt, finding Energy Tanks, Missile Expansions, and other upgrades. I also discovered that I was having fun! That scavenger-hunt style of gameplay was something special! If it could happen to me, maybe they will make you a bit warmer, too, instead of giving you that cold feeling. In fact, you might just be Fried Chicken Brutus instead of Chicken in the Freezer Brutus!
