I'm still waiting the Nintendolife review for pandora's tower but I found this one that matches the first impressions I had while playing the import http://www.cubed3.com/review/1106 Many will look at Pandora’s Tower as being the weakest of the three Wii RPGs, with Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story easily making Ganbarion and Nintendo’s effort seem unworthy of attention. However, such a judgement would be unjust, since this Action RPG takes a totally different slant, offering an almost 3D Castlevania and Metroid feel to proceedings, mixing in a pleasant love story and a brilliantly smooth battle system that will widen its appeal. Pandora’s Tower certainly can stand proud amongst its fellow genre stablemates.
I'll be completely honest, I made fun of this game the last time it was a thread and will (hopefully) get it mainly because of OPRA.
That doesn't mean I think it will be a bad game at all, and any hints of it being Metroidvania like is good news. I just don't buy every good game ever.
I'm about five and a half hours into the game and it's been good fun so far. There's no point trying to compare it to Xenoblade Chronicles or The Last Story as it's a completely different type of game. From what I've played so far, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's considering buying it.
Now if only the character designs were Stocke. We could always use more White Chronicle.
(no one knows what I'm talking about)
I do completely agree we need more japanese games with characters that don't immediately make me think of recent Final Fantasy games but you have not seen enough anime if you think that's stock. You have no idea how far the uncreative rabbit hole can go.
@Waveboy I agree that Aeron's design isn't the most creative but there are far more generic designs than his. Also, at least your not going to hear him laughing like this.
So, I'm going to come out and say it: I was wrong about this game.
Now that I'm playing it in English, and some of the complexities around the stories and ideas are making more sense to me, I rather like it. The presentation is a little like Nier in the sense that it's very much like an opera. The plot is deliberately vague and subtle, charaters are tragic and there's a violence to this game that's quite transgressive. It's nothing like Castlevania in that sense: that series is as generic as they come. Pandora's Tower is at its best when it isn't being a game.
Of course, it still plays terribly. Really, really badly, stupid pointer controls and all, but as an experience there's a dark beauty to this game that puts it above the far less original Xenoblade (JRPG take on Skyrim? I'll just stick to Skyrim) and The Last Story (sorry buddy, but you can't out-Final Fantasy Final Fantasy)
