This was really only meant to be a theoretical question, and not such an in-depth analysis on whether it could be done or not. The core gameplay and level design undoubtedly could have been done on the NES. Sure they'd have to dumb down the graphics a bit, but I still believe this game could have been made on the NES.

@Splat- Its similar to Super Metroid in a way. You go jumping around and exploring caves, and shooting at every cartoon creature you see. The main difference between SM and CS? A story. And a damn good one.
U can try it for free for the PC. Thats what I did.
A NES game like that would cost alot of money back then.

Guys I have a question. When Super Mario Bros. came out, they needed to do a few cheap things to get some more characters in it but stay under the size limitations of the memory. Such as the Goomba animation or wings on a Koopa. How the heck did they make Mario Bros 3? Did they increase the memory in cartridges by the time?
@pixelman& KraiserGX Ah, I forgot about Ninja Gaiden. But the thing is, most NES games had you just going down a path because the instruction booklet said you have to. Most times there was no cue in-game that said you have to do this because [insert reason here].

The game runs at 50 FPS people. That wasn't possible on the NES. Lots of things on screen, no respawning enemies until you left the area, etc. It would be heralded as one of the best games ever created if it was made during the time, it just wouldn't be on the NES.
Best thread ever

HUH?
Oh and V8 you should have told me you needed 30 coins! I would have given you my Warioware code!
If you'll notice in Von Kaiser's picture, Kirby's Adventure uses a lot of old-school tricks. The tree, hud, and apple all use the same three colors, Kirby uses the same colors as the sky, and then the foliage all use the same colors too. You don't see these techniques used in Cave Story - at all.
Kirby's only that color because he has acquired Freeze. Otherwise he would be his normal pink self.
I've yet to play through to the secret area for the third ending, but what I played so far would have been one of the best SNES games (not sure why this always gets compared to NES games, no way an NES could handle this). If I could get confirmation from more people that the game doesn't crash when entering hell, I'd probably take the plunge and get it on WiiWare for the sake of playing with a good controller.
Kirby's Adventure was a brilliant idea with terrible execution. Despite a brilliant premise, there is virtually NO level design and almost no challenge. Although I think the game is really neat and love Kirby in general, I can't call it one of the best of all time.
Totally agree that Cave Story simply wouldn't be possible on NES. SNES, maybe... but even then I wonder if there aren't too many individual sprites on-screen during many of the levels. That said, if Cave Story came out during either the NES or SNES era it would be remembered as one of the best games ever with the only caveat possibly being that it was quite short.
I completely agree with that assessment of Kirby's Adventure, as much as I'd like to like it. I think it's a problem with many Kirby games, but no way am I passing up on Epic Yarn despite this.
@Adam: It doesn't crash there. The only time it crashes is if you look at the map item at a certain point. The map is pointless so just don't use it and you'll be fine.
