Topic: Why won't Nintendo make a true sequel to Super Mario RPG on the Wii U?

I've always been confused as to why Nintendo never made a TRUE sequel to Super Mario RPG on any system. The Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games were alright, but they were far too simple and lacked the party management of the original game (which I found a lot of fun with classic Nintendo characters). Given the Wii U's desperate need for more RPGs, a true sequel to Super Mario RPG would be a great choice.

I know they couldn't use Geno and Mallow (the rights for which are owned by square), but a sequel could use the same isometric perspective, a similar combat system or a combat system adapted for real time, and the setting of the mushroom kingdom.

I miss the days when Nintendo would take risks with GAMES rather than hardware (which is why I'm particularly excited for Splatoon).

Thoughts?

I don't know either why, but certainly Wii U needs more RPGs. Also, don't forget about the rumors of a new Paper Mario game being worked on.

Probably because Square Enix made it and Ninty have got their own take on what a Mario RPG is with Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario.

Give it time. The Paper Mario U rumors have been pretty hyped, so who knows. Maybe we'll get one, this year.

The characters other than the Nintendo ones are owned by Square. So unless they struck up a deal you won't see Mario RPG 2.

Squenix owns a good chunk of the game, an example would be the characters involved, like the final boss, Mallow and Geno. A true sequel would more or less be a reboot instead. They can't continue where they left off in the last one because Squenix could throw a fit and claim some sort of copyright infringement. So everything must be new and have nothing to do with the old one. Might as well call it a different game. Which I think the Mario & Luigi Games were created for that reason. The Paper Mario series is also a great substitute. IF Squenix and Nintendo could work together again I'd like a remake or a sequel. I don't mind but that partnership is just a memory. It could happen. Unlikely though.

As I recall, Paper Mario was essentially an attempt to cover for the impossibility of seeing Super Mario RPG ever again. Could be wrong, but that's just what I seem to remember.

I've said for a while I'd love if it Nintendo threw money at Square Enix to create a Kingdom Hearts styled game, but it has you visiting Nintendo worlds instead of Disney. It won't happen though because they'd have to throw a lot of money at SE to get them to make an exclusive for such a poorly selling console, so much that Nintendo probably wouldn't even make it back.

I don't think Nintendo particularly cares for traditional RPGs on their consoles, as outside a handful of high profile franchises, they just don't sell well, especially to the younger audience that Nintendo is intent on targeting. It's why they keep simplifying the mechanics of Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi.

Oh, and I think the OP is well aware of what Square Enix owns the rights to. However, it's nothing Nintendo would need to make their own Mario RPG. It would even be better off without them. Who wants Mallow and Geno when you could have Luigi, Toad, Donkey Kong, Yohsi etc. Why re-use Square's villains that we've already defeated when they have so many of their own to throw in. Bowser, Wart, Wario, Luigi, bosses from other Mario games too.

Are people guessing or know for sure that Square Enix owns the characters to Super Mario RPG? There was a Geno doll in one of the Mario & Luigi games and the likes Crystal (Star Fox) & Dixie Kong weren't created by Ninty but still own them.

Rareware and Nintendo's pseudo-partnership was a completely different story from the one that spawned Super Mario RPG, but that does raise a question worth doing some research into. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know where to start in looking for the answers.

The credits of the Mario & Luigi game show that Geno's cameo appearance was made with permission from Square Enix.

We've gotten complex "New Paper Mario" rumors since Sticker Star came out. While I wouldn't count it out, especially since of course Nintendo would be thinking of a new Paper Mario game, but I wouldn't say rumors mean it's anymore likely than it already is...

I just want another Super Paper Mario. There wont be another Super Mario RPG unless Squeenix decides to make one. That's why we have the mario and luigi rpg series (which I like better).

I would actually like a Super Mario RPG game based off of Sarasaland. It's been 26yrs since Mario saved Daisy. An RPG revisiting this land would be awesome. The Potential is there. A comeback from the alien Tatanga or somebody like him. It could be the next entry to the M&L series.

Yeah, Paper Mario started out as Super Mario RPG 2 early in development (if I'm not mistaken, there's even a debug room in the game that still has the old title on the floor. You'd have to visit The Cutting Room Floor to be sure, though).

Heck, in the Japanese version (of PM), I think there are a few items/locations that share names with items/locations in SMRPG, but these were changed in the western versions, to further distance it from SMRPG.

I think Square would allow it in a heartbeat. Why not? They're not console makers, and as such have no problem in allowing their intellectual property on Nintendo platforms. The problem probably lies more in Nintendo not really wanting to do it, I would guess.

Or not wanting to pay Square when they have two Mario RPG series that they don't have to pay to use

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
