I don't think they'll ever make another one like Starfox 64. The gameplay just doesn't work well in my opinion because it's on rails without really precise controls. If they were to make something similar, it'd probably be more like Sin and Punishment.
They could also make it into a scrolling 2D bullet hell shooter, like Star Soldier. That would be a nice retro throwback to a game that skipped that generation entirely.
I think what most people now want out of a starfox game is something different, like a 3rd person shooter like Ratchet and Clank. I'd rather see it go the way of Mech shooter along the lines of Hawken, but that's just me...
Firstly, it needs to have more than 10 levels (assault). I also would like to see more branching paths. Make it like starfox 64 only much much bigger. Next, less on foot levels, and more arwing levels. I felt like there weren't enough in assault. And if there isn't any online multiplayer in this game, so help me god. Not having online would come under the heading of bad things to do.
I'm pretty sure Assault is the direction they want to take the game. The Arwing levels were the best in that game, besides the secret routes and such being absent. That one level where you're stopping the Aparoid missles was HUGE, and you were in space. Also, you could get out of the Arwing, land inside space stations, then go back into space for all range Arwing battles. If the Sauria level would have been bigger, it would have been better.
The Landmaster was actually the worst part of that game, not the foot combat. Granted, everything needs to be improved in all aspects, but Assault truly is the definition of what Starfox actually is. IMO, at least. StarFox is a group of mercenaries. They fight wherever as long as they get paid.

That reminds me, did Star Fox 3D have online anything?
If I remember correctly it had multiplayer, but it was local and not online.
Star Fox Command had online battles, so I assume it would have been put in if they were given more time.
I don't think it was a launch title, though...
neither was Mario Kart 7 and that had less features than the previous 2 games. Though maybe it would also be a cost thing, since they assumed Star Fox 64 remake wasn't enough to justify it.
