Personally, I'm waiting til E3 to see what Nintendo talk about. I know they've said they're not announcing new hardware but I still think it'll be clear from their behaviour whether they plan on continuing to make wiiU games or not. If they announce nothing new for the wiiU, you might wanna reconsider.

Well yea true. I might just wait and see!

Wii U doesn't have a big library of games. But it's got some truly great ones, and more coming. Considering the price, I think it's worth owning. Hopefully you feel the same way!

What are your first games going to be? Anything got you really excited?

There are already two Wii U games confirmed to be announced at E3 (Zelda, NFC game) I think that they will finish all the games that their first party studios have in the pipeline and start giving some IPs to third party developers, like they did with the Zelda IP for Hyrule Warriors.

First-Person Shooter is a terrible name for a genre. Think about it: we don't call them third-person jumpers or second/third-person action-selectors. No, we call them platformers and adventure games, respectively. Even if you say "well, it's the exception to the rule," you can't tell me that Call of Duty and Portal belong in the same Category, despite the fact that they both fit the criteria for the "genre." They're both in first-person, and in both cases, you shoot something (resembling a gun, no less) and yet, I think we can all agree that lumping Portal in with CoD would be a disservice to both franchises.

The goes for WRPGs and JRPGs, too. A JRPG doesn't necessarily have to be from Japan. A WRPG doesn't have to be from the West. I think it's pretty clear that Dark Souls isn't a JRPG, regardless of its country of origin.

The purpose of genres is to group games together so you can find more games you might like by knowing what games you already like. Applying FPS to everything that's in first-person and involves shooting defeats the purpose of the genre system altogether.

But because the First Person Shooter Market is so big, marketing teams will try to group any game that takes place in the first person view as a First Person Shooter. It is kinda like how the horror genre of books sometimes get lumped in with Teen Romance just because they have vampires in them and Twilight did so well as Teen Romance. I wouldn't consider Portal to be a First Person Shooter, more of a First Person Physics Puzzle Solving game.

Marketing will always try to lump games into certain categories just to get extra sales, but that doesn't mean that is what they are and you can't have a different opinion. First Person Shooters are such a big category and thanks to Call of Duty (mostly) it is the biggest selling category

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Yea well either way I'm gonna wait things out for now until I see what E3 brings. But I think I'm gonna get the Wii U anyways.

@CanisWolfred The game is still undeniably a first person shooter, whether it has horror elements or not. Let's remember that Resident Evil 6 wasn't even survival horror, it was dramatic horror.
This game has a first person perspective and shooting is key to victory.

@Dreamz This is a good argument. I guess my counter is that if Turok Dinosaur Hunter is considered an FPS and not an Action-Adventure, then Zombie U should be an FGPS instead of Survival Horror.

Wii U has a much better library than the PS4 or XB1 so I'd say any time is a good time to pick one up with MK8 just around the corner.

My PS4 has about 3 fun games on the system worth buying (Infamous, AC4, MGS) and Destiny is the only thing coming out soon that really screams next gen. Watch Dogs could be a hit but so far the game looks very average imo. Battlefield and NBA are really nice looking, but unfortunately they are riddled with glitches and quickly lose their luster after the graphical wow factor. Killzone is the same in regards to beautiful graphics, boring story/gameplay.

Nintendo on the other hand has Zelda, 2 Mario games, Nintendoland, W101, DK, Pikmin, and now MK8. All fun games imo. Mario Kart in particular will probably be one of the funnest games to play this year. Plus the virtual console, lacking as it is, still blows away the digital games playable on PS4 or XB1. The GBA games just released are way more interesting than any indie PS4 game that has come out yet.

I honestly can't recommend someone buy a PS4 or XB1 when it comes to games, but the Wii U gets my recommendation for sure. Next year, once MGSV, Kingdom Hearts, Project Beast, aka good games are released the PS4 will be a must own console but right now it really is lacking in the fun department. And the XB1, I wouldn't even bother unless you are into FPS games. The console is vastly inferior to the PS4 in all aspects gaming wise especially when it comes to the XBL gold membership cost/feature benefits.

This could all change at E3, which I hope to see many reveals for all three consoles to give this next generation the kickstart it needs. 3-4 AAA games this holiday from each company would be fantastic.

Forget E3, in the last 2 years Nintendo have made more reveals and shared more info via directs than conventions like E3.

That said its only a month away so its not long to wait, but think on this, of all the things revealed in the last E3 what lived up to the hype?

Turok was an FPS before FPS was a well-established genre. The adventure elements were simple anyways, and more of an afterthought compared to the shooting. That's like saying DOOM should be classed as a puzzle game because it has key-based puzzles...ultimately, Dreamz said it best, ZombiU doesn't feature the shooting as a major core mechanic. It's a Survival Horror game in first person first and foremost, with minor FPS elements added on.

Also, "Dramatic horror"? You really need to stop listening to advertisers, man...

Turok has quite a bit of adventure, I'd say as much as some of the 3D Zelda games. And Resident Evil 6 is dramatic horror, I don't see why you disagree.

Clearly neither party is going to concede, so let's stop polluting this thread with our off-topic argument. If you would like to continue arguing, start a new thread, but it will waste our time, as like I said before, neither of us will concede.

@CanisWolfred Everything you just said exemplifies the problem with the term "First-person Shooter." It defeats the purpose of genres altogether.

Genres are largely rhetoric. It's kind of like what Skywake said about internet Acronyms, there's no rhyme or reason to them, they only make sense when people use them a lot and therefore know what it means simply through prior experience. To put it simply, FPS makes sense, because we know what an FPS is based on every other game that's been called an FPS. ZombiU is more of a Survival Horror because its mechanics fit more with games that have been called survival horror.

Oops.

Just that I agree wholeheartedly with you, my friend.

Also, even if you enjoy 4-5 games exclusive to the system, then it warrants a buy. For me, with just Mario 3d World, DK Tropical Freeze, Zombie U, Mario Kart 8 and some VC games is more than enough for a long time. If you add Smash Bros, X, Doctor Luigi, NES Remix, and some incredible indie stuff then buying a 250 or so game system with lots of potential is a no brainer. Now, for 330 bucks in the US, you get 2 games, the deluxe system, and steering wheel and a wiimote. For 270 or so you can get the Skylanders bundle which is great if you fancy that kind of stuff.

Look, a game can be considered more than one genre. So why argue about what genre a game is in if it straddles the line?
