Please note that the OP is interested in purchasing either a Genesis or SNES for Xmas, is an American, a fan of RPGs, and mentioned that Price is important as he's short on cash.
Good job further confirming the obvious bias on this forum.
Also, good job ignoring the first post like most other people here.
I'm not biased towards the Snes, if you actually read my comment than you'd realise I owned a Genesis in that era and played alot of games for both systems. Anyways, to answer the OP's question which i never did in my orginal post. The SNES is the one to go for RPG's.
Given that most of the better RPGs on the SNES aren't all that cheap these days. It's probably much more cost effective to go with the Genesis.
That's a very good point, a very, very good point. Like, I just looked up 10 SNES RPGs of various degrees of goodness, and they were all mighty expensive, although I did see one or two affordable copies of Arcana.

He's refering to kkslider's post.
Whoopsie, my bad. But it sounded like it was directly towards me seeing as my first comment did seem slightly biased if somebody(like he did) just read 'SNES, easily'lol And I ignored the OP's actual question hehe. That's what you get for skimming through posts and not reading them properly. Me, dumb dumb today.
Anyways, as far as RPG's go...And even though I'm not an RPG kind of guy. The SNES has Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana and many others. Those 4 alone destroy Genesis entire RPG Library.

16 bit RPG's I've played which aren't many really I'd rank Chronmo Trigger > FF2 > Phantasy Star 4 >Shining Force 2 > Mario RPG > Phantasy Star 2 so SNES hardly destroys megadrives library, in fact its library seems to be pretty good even its RPG's which are of comparable quality despite horror of horrors being released on a different machine.
Can we get a thread lock please? This thread is retreading old ground and does nothing but offend my inner Sega fan. Not because the SNES has better RPGs (it does and I love them), but because most posters aren't paying attention to what the thread is about and are just jumping the gun about SNES vs Genesis. Terrible thread title.
Like Gamesake so wisely said, the Genesis shines in its arcade titles. This type of gaming is now highly underappreciated in the west thanks to the nation-wide closure of video game arcades in the 90s.
I still can't get over that one person saying the Genesis's sound chip generates farts and that the SNES sounds are magical. That's just... incredibly ignorant. Thread lock now, please.
@HolyMackerel: i can't believe you're taking it so personally, to be quite honest. the OP still hasn't made their decision, and others might want to speak up regarding whether they preferred the SNES versus the Genesis back in the day.
I'll change the thread title, perhaps that will help people focus more on helping the OP with their decision.
BEST THREAD EVER future of NL >:3
[16:43] James: I should learn these site rules more clearly
[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!
Thank you tbd. I was taking it personally because a lot of the discussion was pretty unreasonable (and people were being WRONG on the internet). Now I'd be glad if we could resume discussion about comparing the console's RPGs from the standpoint of quality and budget.
Or the OP could finally make a decision lol.
@jaw51 Considering that you are eventually going to buy both and that you're a Nintendo fan, I'd say it might be worth getting the Genesis first. The games generally come cheaper, and you'll be exposed to new games you hadn't tried or possibly heard of. It's nice to have the variety available when things are cheap and you have the benefit of years worth of reviews to back up your purchasing decisions. I'd suggest you also broaden your selection outside of RPGs because, surely, they aren't the only sorts of games you like?
@WaveBoy Every console has said "piss poor" games, and if you take the music or sound effects from any of them you could relate them to farts. Comparing bad Genesis games to good SNES games is a terrible way of judging the consoles. Here's a better way: recently I was discussing Street Fighter II with a SNES-owning friend and we showed each other Youtube clips of the SF2 music from both consoles. We eventually decided (after a loooong discussion haha) that both had awesome music, and that some songs were better on the SNES and some songs were better on the Genesis. Like we decided that Ken's music was better on the SNES and Chun Li's music was better on the Genesis.
We couldn't decide on Ryu's theme though. (SNES / Genesis) Both are awesome!
There's a lot of bias and half truths in this thread, but at the risk of being rude, maybe that is to be expected when asking a "Nintendo or Sega"-question of ANY type on the forum of a site called "Nintendolife"...
As for OP's question: with both "longtime Nintendo fan" and "Love RPGs", i'd say SNES, the good games are expensive of course, but they're the ones people both look for when building a collection and hang onto when they do get them, the "Meh to ZOMGBAD!"-bracket of games is cheap because nobody wants them and everybody's trying to get rid of them, i imagine it's the same on the Genesis, retro-gaming just isn't a cheap hobby...
Now you see, evil will always triumph, because good is dumb! >:D
Toejam & Earl In Panic On Funkatron - Mellow Groovehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUg4SOeNk5c This game has loads of awesome music, but this is my favourite thanks to the Sega Tunes remix. So in the pocket it's collecting lint! [youtube:IUg4SOeNk5c]
I always get a warm fuzzy feeling from hearing that. ♥ Growing up with SEGA stuff and owning a SNES now I have to say both are great systems, I'd go for the Genesis since they seem less expensive.
I'm a Sega fan, but I'd probably go with the SNES UNLESS you could get a cheap Sega CD as well.
You can get most big name Genesis games on the Wii already between GC compilations and the VC. There are still some Nintendo games, like Chrono Trigger, that you can't (unless you count DS remakes).
HOWEVER, the Lunar games on Sega CD are pretty amazing and, to the best of my knowledge, can't be had anywhere else. Shining Force CD, Vay, and Popful Mail are pretty awesome too. Most good SNES RPG's have been rereleased/remade, but unfortunately, Sega CD games have mostly been lost to the sands of time.
