I agree, start with the Genesis. It's cheaper, its games are cheaper, and there are actually plenty of good games on the Genny not on compilations. Its mostly Sega Published games that are out right now, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about redundancy, so long as you stick with stuff from other publishers. You can always save up for an SNES later on.

Mega CD is really worth looking into too and does wonders for the sound quality, just avoid the FMV games except maybe Road Avenger that's actually pretty decent and sells very cheaply, although it was a failure sales wise it has a surprisingly good library of games, and multi platform games like Earthworm often benefit from better sound than their cart based releases.

Mega CD music vid, pretty varied collection:

Megadrive/Genesis is definitely cheaper option. I just bought complete Sonic 2 for 5€. Compare that to Super Mario World which goes around Finland for 20€.

Also, a lot of Gen/MD games still come with the plastic covers. since they're more durable than SNES's cardbord boxes. It takes bit more room, but a row of Megadrive cases look nice on your shelf.

I think I've made up my mind. For now I'll go with a Genesis, but eventually I'll get a SNES too. Like many of you guys said, the Genesis is cheaper and has cheaper games and I can't spend too much money right now. Also, even though the SNES has more classic RPGs than the Genesis, the Genesis has a few and I enjoy platformers and action games just as much as RPGs. Thanks for all your feedback!

Great choice. Since you said you like RPG's, you should definitely try out Shining Force 1 & 2. I have no clue how much they cost nowadays, but they're great.

HolyMackerel, That 'Sonic & Knuckles - Lava Reef Zone Act 1' track is awesome.

Hell, now I'm in the mood to get myself a sega Genesis(model 2) with one controller and a bunch of games. These games to be exact muhaha.

Genesis
Castle of Illusion
Rocket Knight Adventures
Decap Attack
Castlevania Bloodlines
Splatterhouse 2
Dynomite Heady
Streets of Rage
World of Illusion
Streets of Rage 2
Vector Man
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Boogerman
Splatterhouse 3
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Gun Star Heroes
Ristar

And you know, I also remember playing Toe Jam & Earl back in the day, but nowdays I can't STAND that game or the sequal. The original puts me in a crappy mood, I don't care how funky it is.lol

All great games, and many of them are pretty cheap, too.

I wouldn't advise you to get Jurassic Park though, it's awkward to play these days but amazing back in the day.

If you want a challenge Taz escapes from Mars is brutal...almost beat it once but it's definitely fun and very fast paced when he spins.

Yeah, Retro gaming just ain't cheap. I think I might've just got lucky at the time. Then again, the games I got aren't super popular, but they were pretty good. Underrated gems, I'd say.

It is if we're talking genesis and for alot of Nes games. But the SNES is a different story. Mega Man 7 is going for almost $70...It's a shame that getting any SNES game complete is so expensive, because I wouldn't mind having the boxes.

I prefer it with no boxes, they take up too much space. I got 4 boxed Genny games that I had to shove into a crate with my Gamecube games, because I honestly have nowhere else to put them that's convenient. Plus no box is cheaper.

But yeah, $70 for a game? Really now? And an old one at that. Sheesh.

Ew! Jurrasic Park, another Genesis title I played back in the day, definitly hasn't aged well. Like you said it's the type of game that was impressive from a graphics stand point, but playing it today just stack up.

And Mickeymac* I gotta say, I'm suprised by how cheap you can get Genesis games that are complete with the box and manual all in great condition. They all seem to be in the $20 - $27 CAN price range. Hell, I don't even have a Genesis right now, but I feel like pulling the rigger on Decap Attack! It's only $15 and it's complete.

Every single Genesis Game I buy is going to be complete, unlike the magority of SNES games which are priced sky high in comparison. Bummer town budddd.

But ya, I sold my Genesis back when I was around 11 as soon as the dissapointing Sega Saturn came out...And it's been a long time since i've played on one, definitly thinking of getting the prettier model 2 design. And bluh to the 6 button controller.

Yeah that game is so bad...I used to get to Stage 3 before dying but recently I took it out for a spin again...how on earth did I manage to complete level 1!?! That jump is so awkward on the last stretch with grant and the raptor gets hurt my merely touching anything that moves.

Although Mega Drive games are indeed cheap...a few over here in the UK go for £30/40 which is about $55...and these games are on the VC too...I would love to play the original Streets of Rage 3 and Shining Force series but at that price I'd rather not.

I rarely see any SNES games if any at all...I had a SNES back in 97 before we could afford a Playstation...didn't play many classic games on it but I did find joy in Killer Instinct and Super Mario Kart...too bad my parents sold it to a neighbour for only £20.

Although Saturn was a joke back then...it's a sought after collectors item...moreso then the Dreamcast...it also had decent 2D games plus some of the better ports in Castlevania and Bomberman. When I was young I NEVER saw a Saturn in game stores but ALWAYS saw Sonic R somewhere in the shop...which is pretty tragic.

Anyways, go for a Model 1 (which I originally had...but binned it as we thought it was playing up when in fact the adapter was worn...the sound chips are better in the early versions too...for less clutter go for Model 2.

I may get Rocket Knight Adventures but I am waiting to see if it ever arrives on VC first.

Not sure if anyone played this but I loved it for the time (somewhere around I guess...)

After a lot of years of Nintendo fanboy-erism in the 90's (until the Dreamcast) i have concluded that comparison between the two consoles is meaningless. Both have outstanding and exclusive classics. I love most games that were made in the 90's, regardless of their visual quality.

With kind regards,

Wow, Hellfire is cheap, man...why wasn't it that cheap when I wanted to buy it over the summer?

I heard that there is a Turbographix version of it too, you could go for that one. I am still trying to find it but I kind of appreciate that it is a unique shmup although I hate the genre as a whole.

Shmups are hard, but I love them. I could go for a cheap game on my fave old console, the Genny.

Do I? I never played them. I certainly hope I didn't say I played them because that would be a lie. I watched a video of Preditor 2 and I recall it being crap, but that's neither here nor there. Why?
