Topic: Should I buy an SNES or a Genesis?

@WaveBoy Every console has said "piss poor" games, and if you take the music or sound effects from any of them you could relate them to farts. Comparing bad Genesis games to good SNES games is a terrible way of judging the consoles. Here's a better way: recently I was discussing Street Fighter II with a SNES-owning friend and we showed each other Youtube clips of the SF2 music from both consoles. We eventually decided (after a loooong discussion haha) that both had awesome music, and that some songs were better on the SNES and some songs were better on the Genesis. Like we decided that Ken's music was better on the SNES and Chun Li's music was better on the Genesis.

We couldn't decide on Ryu's theme though. (SNES / Genesis) Both are awesome!

There's a lot of bias and half truths in this thread, but at the risk of being rude, maybe that is to be expected when asking a "Nintendo or Sega"-question of ANY type on the forum of a site called "Nintendolife"...

As for OP's question: with both "longtime Nintendo fan" and "Love RPGs", i'd say SNES, the good games are expensive of course, but they're the ones people both look for when building a collection and hang onto when they do get them, the "Meh to ZOMGBAD!"-bracket of games is cheap because nobody wants them and everybody's trying to get rid of them, i imagine it's the same on the Genesis, retro-gaming just isn't a cheap hobby...

Now you see, evil will always triumph, because good is dumb! >:D

I'm with you for sure, those Genesis versions are definitly better. Ryu's(especially) and Chun-li's Genesis stage themes have more of a pop and a higher pitch to them which I like, and they seem slightly more daring and bit more funky. Music aside, SFII on the SNES looked slightly better and had greater color based on what I remember, but I could be wrong. Plus, using the SNES controller for fighters just felt better in my opinon. But whocares we're talking music here!

Decap Attack is another Genesis title that has a wicked score. Here are a few of some of my favorite Genesis tracks.
It's music like this which seperates itself from the SNES, these tracks deliver killer atmosphere and they all have that distinct Genesis sound to them.

I always get a warm fuzzy feeling from hearing that. ♥
Growing up with SEGA stuff and owning a SNES now I have to say both are great systems, I'd go for the Genesis since they seem less expensive.

I'm a Sega fan, but I'd probably go with the SNES UNLESS you could get a cheap Sega CD as well.

You can get most big name Genesis games on the Wii already between GC compilations and the VC. There are still some Nintendo games, like Chrono Trigger, that you can't (unless you count DS remakes).

HOWEVER, the Lunar games on Sega CD are pretty amazing and, to the best of my knowledge, can't be had anywhere else. Shining Force CD, Vay, and Popful Mail are pretty awesome too. Most good SNES RPG's have been rereleased/remade, but unfortunately, Sega CD games have mostly been lost to the sands of time.

BUY SOMETHIN WILL YA!

I agree, start with the Genesis. It's cheaper, its games are cheaper, and there are actually plenty of good games on the Genny not on compilations. Its mostly Sega Published games that are out right now, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about redundancy, so long as you stick with stuff from other publishers. You can always save up for an SNES later on.

Mega CD is really worth looking into too and does wonders for the sound quality, just avoid the FMV games except maybe Road Avenger that's actually pretty decent and sells very cheaply, although it was a failure sales wise it has a surprisingly good library of games, and multi platform games like Earthworm often benefit from better sound than their cart based releases.

Mega CD music vid, pretty varied collection:

Megadrive/Genesis is definitely cheaper option. I just bought complete Sonic 2 for 5€. Compare that to Super Mario World which goes around Finland for 20€.

Also, a lot of Gen/MD games still come with the plastic covers. since they're more durable than SNES's cardbord boxes. It takes bit more room, but a row of Megadrive cases look nice on your shelf.

Stop the hate today and learn to love games!
Help me to fight my huge backlog of games!

I think I've made up my mind. For now I'll go with a Genesis, but eventually I'll get a SNES too. Like many of you guys said, the Genesis is cheaper and has cheaper games and I can't spend too much money right now. Also, even though the SNES has more classic RPGs than the Genesis, the Genesis has a few and I enjoy platformers and action games just as much as RPGs. Thanks for all your feedback!

Great choice. Since you said you like RPG's, you should definitely try out Shining Force 1 & 2. I have no clue how much they cost nowadays, but they're great.

HolyMackerel, That 'Sonic & Knuckles - Lava Reef Zone Act 1' track is awesome.

Hell, now I'm in the mood to get myself a sega Genesis(model 2) with one controller and a bunch of games. These games to be exact muhaha.

Genesis
Castle of Illusion
Rocket Knight Adventures
Decap Attack
Castlevania Bloodlines
Splatterhouse 2
Dynomite Heady
Streets of Rage
World of Illusion
Streets of Rage 2
Vector Man
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Boogerman
Splatterhouse 3
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Gun Star Heroes
Ristar

And you know, I also remember playing Toe Jam & Earl back in the day, but nowdays I can't STAND that game or the sequal. The original puts me in a crappy mood, I don't care how funky it is.lol

I wouldn't advise you to get Jurassic Park though, it's awkward to play these days but amazing back in the day.

If you want a challenge Taz escapes from Mars is brutal...almost beat it once but it's definitely fun and very fast paced when he spins.
