I'm thinking of buying one of these, or at least asking for one for my birthday. I'm a pretty big fan of RPGs, and I've been a Nintendo fan all my life, so right now I'm leaning towards SNES, but both games have plenty of classics and I could be swayed either way at this point. Also, price is important to me, as I don't have very much to spend right now.
Not sure I'd want a Genesis now when most of the best games are on the Wii's Virtual Console, but if you really want the hardware make sure you get a Sega CDX or a Genesis 3.
The SNES is much better for modern RPGs. I never would have gotten a SNES if it wasn't for the Final Fantasy 2 and 3. Those two games are also on the Game Boy Advance along with every other game that was worth anything on the SNES so why not grab an old GBA SP instead? You'd get more miles out of it than buying a SNES 2.
I like the Genesis better but if you're just after RPGs then go with SNES 2 or GBA SP.
When it comes to RPG's, both have good selections, although I'd say Super Nintendo has more well-known titles. Genesis does have several western RPG's as well, like Might and Magic and Faery Tales Adventure.
Cant really say which one you should get, But if you have the change, get both.
Prefer the megadrive myself also the SNES didn't really have the RPG advantage here in Europe that it did elsewhere, but if RPG's are your main target and your not in Europe then the SNES sounds ideal thanks to square-enixs support of that system, but then again most of the top games for both systems seem to be on VC now, so looking into what's not likely to come to VC and I'd say megadrive looked a bit better there, with stronger EA support back when EA games where something to look forward to.
Tough one Genesis has sonic, Phantasy Star, Gunstar, Contra, Ristar, Vectroman, Streets or Rage, and Golden Axe while the SNES had Mario, FF, DQ, Contra 3, DKC, Zelda, F-Zero, SF, Mario Kart, Kirby, Metroid, and Mega Man X
Ok I chose SNES

Come one now, this is a Nintendo forum, right? lol. SNES all day long! The only thing Genesis had that I liked as a kid was Sonic 1/2, Streets of Rage, and the bloodier version of Mortal Kombat.
Both are good, but since you said price is important I'd recommend the Genesis. You'll find the games for the Genesis are usually cheaper online, especially the multiplatform titles. Due to the terrible packaging the SNES games used, its also easier to find Genesis games with the manual and case, if that's important to you.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with this. I got a Sega Genesis with 7 games and a controller for about $12 total, if I recall correctly. I also got a bunch of Genny games for $3-$15 each, many of which were complete.
I definitely say the SNES. The Genesis had good games like Shinobi III, Sonic 2, and Phantasy Star IV, but SNES had an abundance of great games. For every good Genesis game I've played, there have been 3 SNES games that were better.

I am Sega Genesis owner and a Snes owner. Both are excellent game systems. I am not giving a straight answer for what system to own though.
Rpgs on the Snes are not the cheap side to put it mildly. There is a small amount of rpgs that are cheap, but that is it. The Big name Rpgs for the Snes like Final Fantasy 2, Final Fantasy 3, Breath of Fire 2, Lufia 1, Lufia 2, Earthbound, Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger cost over $25.00 for the system.
RPGs on the Snes are more expansive as a whole than they were when I was buying them from 2000 to 2002.
Please note that the OP is interested in purchasing either a Genesis or SNES for Xmas, is an American, a fan of RPGs, and mentioned that Price is important as he's short on cash.
Were you really expecting an unbiased view from this community? lol. Generalising all Genesis sounds as farts and all SNES sounds as magical is precisely the sort of thing you'll get from a Nintendo forum like this. You might want to take your question elsewhere.
Personally I think the SNES has a better RPG selection overall mostly thanks to Square's releases, though the Genesis has some great classics too, like the Shining series. I couldn't tell you what the current price differences between SNES and Genesis games are.
Oh sorry Mickey if you meant me. I thought it was an opinion thread.
Anyway, yeah....SNES for RPGs...Phantasy Star is awful. (in my personal opinion)
Nope, I was just reminding EVERYBODY. This whole community hates to read the first post for some reason, and the whole thing spirals down some weird tangent before the OP gets an answer.
