True, I expected a turn towards the SNES more.

Although I slightly disagree to the soundchip argument, sure the Mega Drive wasn't as good but it had a few great game soundtracks that the SNES couldn't do as well with (Bass and percussion come to mind).

I haven't played Shining Force but hear good things about the TRPG but from what I have seen it has not aged well compared to Tactics Orge (which I may get on PSP).

Main Final Fantasy & Quest/Shinobi Team fan...but I do like many SEGA games and a few Nintendo games.

I can be cute if I want to be, but I choose not to...as it's not my style.

It's rough around the edges, but otherwise Shining Force has aged fabulously, better than Tactics Ogre, actually (Luckily the remake is replacing the old gameplay with the improvements from Final Fantasy Tactics).

Have you ever heard the Shinobi III soundtrack? It's like honey to your ears.

I'd recommend just getting one of the many Genesis collections, in all honesty. They're very cheap and have most of the Genesis's best games for under 30$. Then, you could get a SNES and collect some it's games, and get a few of them that are too expensive (like Secret of Mana) on the Virtual Console. Problem solved.

I should get Shinobi 3...the only one I haven't played other then the one with the dog in it. They always have the best music through the MD era.

I tried to see the charm in Shining Force but it doesn't look appealing to me sadly...I'll try Tactics Orge having played all Tactics as the series (my avatar even states I love Advance 2).

Ironic, Shinobi III and Shadow Dancer were the first ones I played, and the best in my opinion. The first two are also great, just not as great, but that's probably because I played them last. Also ironic is that I'm actually saving the Final Fantasy Tactics series until after I play and complete a legally purchased copy of Tactics Ogre, since I'm such a big fan of The Knight of Lodis and Ogre Battle. (And Queen).

Shining Force is actually pretty charming if you played it (not sure if you have, sorry if I'm mistaken), it's just so weird at times, like, seriously, it's the funniest strategy game I've ever played!XD Granted, most strategy games are mad serious, which is why I skip the story most of the time. The music also helps make it so endearing, especially inside the towns.

They both have their fair share of good titles. I love Sonic and Pulseman though....

Both are good, but since you said price is important I'd recommend the Genesis. You'll find the games for the Genesis are usually cheaper online, especially the multiplatform titles. Due to the terrible packaging the SNES games used, its also easier to find Genesis games with the manual and case, if that's important to you.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with this. I got a Sega Genesis with 7 games and a controller for about $12 total, if I recall correctly. I also got a bunch of Genny games for $3-$15 each, many of which were complete.

Whoa, $12! Did you find that deal online or at a yard sale?
If I could find a deal like that I would be getting a Genesis, without a doubt. Also, I generally prefer to play games on their original system, so I don't like to buy from the VC, except for the games that are too expensive.
I'd also like to add that I will probably be getting both eventually, so it's not extremely important which one I get first.

Online. Technically 1 game was a 6 pack...so technically it was 8 games plus a controller + System for around $12. If you sniff around eBay enough, you'll run upon some great deals. With that said, my Genny didn't come with an SD cable so I had to buy my own, so it wasn't that great a deal.

Here's one I happened upon, but I suggest you at least shop around.

there were 3 of them

I'd recomend both. In this day and age, there really isn't much of a reason to own one and not the other.

In the past, I always gravitated more towards the SNES, but lately I've been far more interested in the Genesis.

Valis 1 & 3 are good or great geat games for the Sega Genesis. I thought Syd of Valis wasn't great as good as the other 2 Valis games.

Valis 1 & 3 are classic while i tend to look at Syd Of Valis as "eye candy" if you will...there all worth playing and adding to the dusty collection. flashback...
i remember going to a friends house and seeing them play Valis 3 and i asked when the game was due back at the rental store and the day it was due i went to that store and got it...it was an emotional experience lol
ever since then i had to have all 3 games for the genesis

I remember years ago when the SNES and Genesis went head to head I had a SNES and all my friends had Genesis. The reason I went with SNES was cause of all the RPGs. After awhile all my friends who had Genesis got a SNES cause they were fans of RPGs to and the Genesis didnt cut it. Also SNES had some of the best to date ones like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3, Earthbound and the Lufia Series just to name a few.

My personal opinion aside, If you are looking for RPGs than the SNES is for you.

Tough call....for shooters, sports, fast-paced action games, and beat-em-ups go Genesis. For platformers, action RPG's, regular RPG's, puzzle games, and more 'polish' go SNES.

Althought the SNES has some amazing shooters, and the Genesis has some amazing platformers.

I would choose SNES for both nostalgia and the 'feel' of the games. I would go Turbografx-16 next, and then Genesis 3rd. Genesis has tons of awesome games, but they don't hold my interest as long for some reason.

Yeah, Phantasy Star IV and Lunar were awesome but they were also hard to come by.

That's probably because Genesis had arcade games like, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Hang On, Space Harrier, After Burner, and Lethal Enforcers; short and sweet bursts of action packed gaming is what arcade games are for.

I didn't own a SNES, but I really had a great gaming time with Sega Genesis.

Good job further confirming the obvious bias on this forum.

Also, good job ignoring the first post like most other people here.
