It sucks for WiiU-users to be sure, but it's sadly a sound business move, if porting the game (possibly having to dial down visuals as you go) takes too much time, combined with a small userbase, chances of seeing any profit at all are zero, and that's Nintendo who messed up by making a console that's both weaker and harder to port to than the competition, can't blame third parties for deciding not to develop games with no chance of turning a profit, game development isn't a charity business after all...

MysticX commented on Talking Point: The Fragility of Buying Downloa...:

I personally buy physical copies of everything available as physical carts (That physical copies of games are almost always cheaper than download-versions is a plus, too), but i don't avoid download-only games, i still play 25-year-old games on my old SNES, and dread what will happen in the future when more download services shut down or drop support for old games, remember: download services are still new and few have actually shut down, but this is almost certain to change as the years pass...

MysticX commented on Hacker Produces Region Free Exploit for Curren...:

@Grumblevolcano Well, there's licensing, translations, several different ratings-systems they have to apply to...

All red tape nonsense that has nothing to do with the average gamer, yet delays games for ages just the same, so getting a game several months earlier (If it makes it to Europe at all) is worth the small shipping cost for importing a game.

MysticX commented on Hacker Produces Region Free Exploit for Curren...:

@Spoony_Tech Here in Europe, lots of games come out several months later or not at all, so over the years (From black-and-white gameboy to DS), i imported a lot of games to, you know, get to play them at all.

Region-locking is a relic of the past, but like lots of old, bad habits, Nintendo is having a hard time letting go (Never understood why they suddenly put region-locking onto the 3DS after not caring since the Gameboy), they could cut down on all those semi-weekly "Stability"-updates by just saying "You know what? We don't care where you buy the game, so long as you buy it"

MysticX commented on Feature: Key Nindie Developers and Publishers ...:

I agree with Brjann Si... well, the last guy :P

All this "Only on new 3DS!"-stuff is a pretty big kick in the teeth for people with "old" 3DS/XL/2DS, here i was thinking that "If it works on one model, it works on all of them" was one of the last big advantages handheld consoles had left, whoops!

I'm loathe to spend 200 euros on what would be my third 3DS (Upgraded to a XL because my hands were too big for the regular one), but it looks like more and more things will be new 3DS only...

MysticX commented on Akihiro Hino on Why Fantasy Life 2 is Not Comi...:

Couldn't they just say "We're following the money"?

I suppose in a way they just did, but even for something as logical as "A company trying to make money", it's best to be honest about it, causes less annoyance with the consumers.

MysticX commented on Poll: Is Splatoon a Blockbuster That'll Help R...:

Splatoon looks fun, but not really system-shifting caliber, as has been said countless times before: If Mario kart and Smash bros. didn't shift a lot of systems, something unknown like Splatoon really won't, it will probably sell well to existing WiiU owners though

MysticX commented on Analyst Thinks Nintendo Is Already Winding Dow...:

@Ogbert Well, both Nintendo-systems should have replacements in the works IMO, 3DS is 4 years old, still not ancient but given hardware development times a follow-up must be in the works, and the WiiU just hasn't taken off in any big way despite the big-name games Nintendo threw at it, so cutting their losses and trying a slightly less unorthodox machine next is the smart thing to do, and that includes seeing if VR pans out for anybody before going all-in on it... (Remember the virtual boy! :3 )

MysticX commented on Analyst Thinks Nintendo Is Already Winding Dow...:

I'm sorry, but if Smash bros. couldn't turn the tide, Super Mario 3D world couldn't, Mario kart 8 caused a brief upswing but not much more, then Star fox and Splatoon won't suddenly revive the WiiU either, that's not bashing, that's logic, we can only hope that NX (Whatever it is) can improve Nintendo's prospects...

MysticX commented on Reaction: LEGO Dimensions Could be a Sales Phe...:

@Dauntless We can only hope... In my local toy store the toys-to-life drek is taking up more shelf-space than actual games too, with the Amiibo taking a tiny bit at that (Since getting Amiibo stock is like finding hen's teeth), and the game shelf-space i'm talking about is this generation and last generation COMBINED! >_<

Toys-to-life are the next "Guitar hero", and as such at some point it will just collapse and become one of those "I can't believe that was so damn popular!"-memories. :P

MysticX commented on Feature: A Day in The Future Life of a Nintend...:

Ok, this article paints a pretty grim picture, but Nintendo hasn't even set one step in the whole mobile area yet (They have started with IAP's though ~_~ ), this is a case of yelling "Ouch!" before you get hit IMO...

MysticX commented on Poll: Which Characters Do You Want to Win the ...:

Shantae for me (The avatar is a slight tip-off, i know)...

BTW, for all the people saying "Professor Layton", what would his attacks be? I'm not meaning to cause a fuss, but in what i played of the Layton games, he didn't get much into good old-fashioned fisticuffs...

MysticX commented on Talking Point: The Legend of Zelda on Wii U Ma...:

@kensredemption No, this is pretty bad news, Star fox and Xenoblade aren't nearly as large heavy hitters than Legend of Zelda, so unless Nintendo somehow has another head-turning game lined up already (If so, why haven't they announced anything yet?), they will have a gaping hole where a system-selling holiday title should be.

MysticX commented on Iwata: Nintendo NX Will Surprise People And Ch...:

@outburst Well, maybe not just the gamepad (though the screen is an expensive part), but the gamepad and Nintendo's policy to keep the console price relatively low combined have probably caused Nintendo to skimp on the ol' hardware horsepower, and of course the different hardware architecture which makes porting games harder... None of these are essentially bad, but they combined into a pretty big problem.

MysticX commented on Iwata: Nintendo NX Will Surprise People And Ch...:

@outburst You just proved the point of the gamepad-cynics TBH, the Wii U is sub-par hardwarewise, since by your own admission the gamepad is keeping it afloat AND the best feature (Despite few games making actually innovative use of it), and indeed, in a side-by-side comparison the WiiU looks like last generation hardware.

You can pretty much shorten the "Also to all gamepad haters"-paragraph to "You're right", because the extra cost of making that thing (Note to Nintendo: try a controller that's more practical controller than gimmick tablet next time) is what is holding the rest of the hardware back, and as such pretty much a direct cause for the situation WiiU is in now.

Nintendo should make a console that is hardwarewise on par with the competition with some non-intrusive innovation (Too large changes have proven to be risky) and then make great games on it like only Nintendo can do, the hardcore fans will be happy since Nintendo games are almost inherently awesome, and some non-hardcore-fans might actually buy it too.

MysticX commented on Iwata: Nintendo NX Will Surprise People And Ch...:

Only expanding on existing hardware is dull? Well boo hoo, Nintendo can't afford to have another underpowered console with a hit-or-miss gimmick to prop it up, Nintendo may have big cash reserves to sustain themselves on, but customer trust in the Nintendo brand is a bit harder to stockpile...

MysticX commented on Nintendo NX Will Be About Creating "Fun New Wa...:

@MetalSamus The only reason Nintendo mentioned NX already is to counter the fear (often voiced here) that by doing stuff for mobile, Nintendo would abandon the hardware branch of their company, i'm pretty sure that if they didn't feel they had to counterbalance their mobile efforts, Nintendo would have happily kept NX a secret for a while longer...

MysticX commented on Nintendo NX Will Be About Creating "Fun New Wa...:

@Bolt_Strike That control scheme worked just fine from the mid-80s until now, make the main control scheme a simple dual-stick controller, and make an optional controller-with-gimmick, it's not that hard to think of, but it requires Nintendo to swallow their pride and do something in a non-weird manner...

MysticX commented on Nintendo NX Will Be About Creating "Fun New Wa...:

"Fun new ways to play"... oh dear...

Get the old-fashioned ways to play right first (You know, decent specs, controller that programmers can figure out what to do with and easy to port to), then create some add-on gimmick device if you must, get the foundation right before trying to build a palace...

MysticX commented on Nintendo Working On New 'Dedicated Game Platfo...:

@Grumblevolcano Besides the fact that developing a console (Let's assume NX is a console for now) takes years to do, WiiU is distant third in the console wars and objectively not doing very well at all, so it's a good idea for shareholder (and consumer) confidence in Nintendo to announce that they're working on something new.

MysticX commented on Nintendo Set To License All IP to Mobile Publi...:

Look at it this way: The consumers aren't chasing after anything with "Nintendo" printed on it anymore, so it makes business sense for Nintendo to move in the direction of the customers, and like it or not, but the mobile market is huge.

MysticX commented on Study Finds That US Consumers Are Buying Wii U...:

I think the results are pretty weird TBH...

"Brand" for XBOne? The same brand that loves up one in two of the Windows-versions is a good reason to buy XBOne?

And what the heck is "Fun-factor"? I always assumed that "I find it entertaining" was the prime reason to buy any console... But PS4 doesn't even have "Fun-factor" on the list, so what...

MysticX commented on Iwata Doesn't Feel amiibo Has Shown Its Full P...:

@Shiryu I agree, make a game about Amiibo, rather than tacking a bit of Amiibo-functionality onto utterly unrelated games.

As for card Amiibo: those will only take off if the aforementioned Amiibo game is released along with them, many people who buy the figures do so for the figure, not for a costume in MK8

MysticX commented on Former Sega of America CEO Talks Out on the Co...:

It's a pretty difficult position that Nintendo is in ATM, many gamers are playing games on iOS or handheld devices, please spare me the "Not real games lol!"-routine, they're people playing games who aren't doing it on Nintendo-devices anymore.

If Nintendo keeps going as it is, they are going to lose market share to tablets (Give my kid a $200 3DS or my old tablet/phone? Ooh, difficult...), but if they move IPs to phones/tablets, they'll lose the one big thing that keeps their 3DS-line afloat: great exclusives (A Miiverse app is so hilariously insipid it doesn't really count as "Doing something on mobile", a Nintendo news app? Newsflash Nintendo: Tablets have internet-access nowadays!)

MysticX commented on Poll: Are You An Early Adopter With The New Ni...:

I'm not convinced it's a big enough upgrade (I already have a 3DS XL) to warrant a 170-200 euro outlay TBH, especially since not many games will actually use the increased speed and stuff (To maintain compatibility with the "old" 3DS line)

MysticX commented on Satoru Iwata Shares Confidence in Hitting Targ...:

If Nintendo's best idea for a mobile app is faffing around with Mii's... Yeah, it's better if they do steer clear of mobile outright, better be unknown than known for rubbish...

The only thing worse than doing nothing on mobile (An immense market however you look at it) is half-assing it, then the association that the general public will have with Nintendo is "Those guys of the balloon-headed boardgame-pawns app" (Mii's don't really have much by way of personality)

MysticX commented on Talking Point: Limitations on Stock and Advert...:

@Franklin Well, now Nintendo have less stock to pay storage costs for, the whole "opportunistic middle men"-thing is none of their concern, all Nintendo cares about is that all Amiibo and limited edition stuff they manufacture is sold, what happens after that doesn't involve them (And especially their profits) in any way at all...

MysticX commented on Editorial: Nintendo's YouTube Creators Program...:

@njblair143 Yeah, but how much longer can Nintendo continue bumbling around relying on their cash reserves?

Don't get me wrong, Nintendo make awesome games, but their activities outside the game-making have a disturbing number of "WTF are they thinking?"-moments in them...

MysticX commented on Nintendo Stays in Profit With Wii U on Target,...:

@jakysnakydx WiiU is third in sales this generation, sold less than a console considered a failure by most (Gamecube, cool games but no commercial hit by any stretch) and Nintendo only just clambered out of the red, doesn't take a MBA in business administration to get a "Maybe it could have gone a bit better"-vibe...

MysticX commented on Nintendo Stays in Profit With Wii U on Target,...:

@erv How many casual gamers (The less enthusiastic part of the Nintendo fanbase) regularly browse the internet in search of 3DS news though?

Maybe most people who want a 3DS already have one, and it remains to be seen how many of those are going to buy a new 3DS, maybe i'm being an old cynical barsteward, but nothing about it has me all psyched to buy a third 3DS... (Bought a 3DS XL because my hands are too damn big for the regular 3DS :P )

It's really the cellphone/tablet routine all over again, they take an old device, stick an upgrade or two on it (Bit faster, new functionality, but nothing so major that it divides the userbase) and then expect you to buy a 90% similar device because of it, it feels a bit "Money grab"-ish, and i honestly expected better from Nintendo...

MysticX commented on Video: Does Super Mario Galaxy 2 On Wii U Offe...:

@CommenSense This irks me too, i never had a Wii but bought a WiiU, so you'd think i'm the kind of customer Nintendo does that sort of re-release, but alas, i will first have to plunk down €50 or so to get a Wiimote and nunchuck first, i don't think so...

Best thing Nintendo can do (and as such never will) is update Wii emulation and allow usage of the gamepad-screen instead of pointing at stuff with the Wiimote (like the bit in "Super Mario 3D world" where the player makes blocks appear by tapping them on the touchscreen)

MysticX commented on Digital Foundry Ponders Next-Gen Hardware Opti...:

@schizor True, and sales are craptacular (Except in Japan), so Nintendo is doing a balancing act between getting a new console ready (Far from easy on its own), making sure it's competitive with what the others are likely to come up with (Unless they want a repeat of this generation), and not making people who bought a WiiU feel ripped off, i don't envy them...

MysticX commented on Feature: The Biggest 3DS Games of 2015:

My most anticipated game for the coming year is "Shantae and the pirate's curse", yeah the avatar is a bit of a hint, but since i live in Europe, i'm still waiting...

But from the list: "Story of seasons" appeals most to me, TBH i don't know why the most anticipated game is a remake from 3 console generations ago, guess it's pretty telling about the rest of the lineup...

I actually wonder why Nintendo is releasing a new rendition of the 3DS when the game-support is so meh (IMO games are more important to shift consoles than a second control stick), but that might just be cynical ol' me.

MysticX commented on Satoru Iwata Highlights Frustration at Missed ...:

@element187 No, i just think Nintendo should differentiate themselves in the games, which is why everybody buys Nintendo (If they want the other games, buy another console, right?), families and children are leaving Nintendo since motion-sensor games are out and phone/tablet games are in for the hardly-a-gamer crowd, they're too busy playing "Candy crush saga" or whatever (More advertised on Dutch TV than anything Nintendo-related, lol) to bother about Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft...

So if the soccer-moms and their kids are too busy with their tablets (Computers, not meds :P ), go for the people who can buy a console and games for it themselves, and the last thing they seem to want is a Fisher-price looking tablet/controller thing (Where DID that "for kids"-image come from? >_< ) that coincidentally pushes the manufacturing costs up, what else could that money be spent on? Oh, i know! faster components for the actual console!

And whether Tablet CPU's are a good idea or not, being the odd one out does make porting to Wii U far more expensive than from PS4 to XBOne, which is another factor on top of "Small install base" for developers to ignore WiiU, and Nintendo just can't develop enough games to keep both WiiU and 3DS afloat...

MysticX commented on Satoru Iwata Highlights Frustration at Missed ...:

Well, of course Nintendo are working on whatever comes after the WiiU, console development takes years, they probably started on it the day WiiU was released (Or maybe they took a day off to celebrate :P )

A for what i'd like next: a processor more similar in power and architecture to what the other guys are using, to encourage more games being ported, Nintendo's first-party games are great, but the WiiU is proving that those games alone aren't enough...

And maybe a more down-to-Earth controller design, it's the game that sell consoles, not a fancy controller that few games use anywhere near to its full potential...

MysticX commented on Discontinued amiibo Figures Could Be Released ...:

Nintendo apparently gave up even trying to do a decent job with Amiibo-supplies, and are just moving on to cheaper alternatives in cards?

Already Nintendo are taking a PR-pummeling with the whole Amiibo-affair, saying "Forget figures, here are some cards!" would be a surefire way to make a bigger smoldering crater out of the whole thing, what are they thinking?

MysticX commented on Talking Point: Super Smash Bros. and amiibo Ha...:

I'd like to get a Wii fit trainer Amiibo, but they're only available on the 'net for 2 or 3 times the RRP, and with $20 or more shipping on top of that, it's a bit too expensive to me...

I'm hoping Nintendo can adjust to the actual demand and get all amiibo's properly available again, the only people happy now are scalpers on the 'net.

MysticX commented on Bayonetta 2 Falls From UK Charts After One Week:

I have to agree with Iceclimbers and minotaurgamer, Bayonetta is a pretty niche game (too weird for mass market), published on a niche console, that's two mentions of the word "niche" too many for it to be a big hit...

Sadly there are two things that most gamers like: complaining about yet another CoD/Fifa/FPS coming out and lapping those games up like dogs anyway
