MysticX commented on Kotaku Says YES to the Wii U - Rejoicing Begins:

@3DS_excel I'm pretty sure the jubilation in this article is more about your second paragraph than your first, of course you don't need justification to buy the WiiU, but developers want justification before they develop for it (Ok, Nintendo can pull the WiiU-cart by themselves, but some help from third parties is never a bad thing), and a positive article on a popular website is a good start for that...

MysticX commented on EA Explains Why It's Abandoning Dedicated Hand...:

Awwww, and i have such good memories of EA, from back when PC screens had 256 colours max and were 320x200 pixels... :3

I'm sitting here, trying really hard to think of anything EA did in the past 10 years that i gave a toss about, and i'm coming up blank, and seeing what they did to "Dungeon keeper" (I used to love that game, you know, the PC-version) really makes me angry, thanks for reinforcing the bad stereotype of mobile games there, EA!

He has a point about 3DS and Vita (By then we'll know what the 3DS follow-up will be and Vita is pretty much dead right now), but it's all overshadowed by the series of cluster*BEEP* EA has been pulling recently.

@manic221 Not all iOS-games have paywalls (Or even In-app purchases, lots of games have IAPs but are perfectly good fun without spending cash, too)

I can see you haven't been to where i live yet, all the people in stores here can tell me is where they have the games-section, anything beyond that gets me a blank stare...

Lastly: you didn't address my issue, comparing the worst of iOS to Nintendo's "Not the bad games"-category, which is still a double standard...

@redivgamer90 So wait, what you mention for iOS-games is what even iOS-gamers consider the dregs of the app-store (Countless bad "Flappy bird"-clones, freemium "Games" with paywalls), but for handheld consoles it's "Not counting bad games..."? Way to stack the deck there... ~_~

MysticX commented on Stats Suggest That UK Kids Are More Likely To ...:

@CaviarMeths Yes, the appeal of tablets and smartphones is in convenience and short "Spend a few minutes" or "quickly look something up" bursts (And those short bursts add up over time), where the problem lies is that the "Spend a few minutes"-idea was a big part of the appeal of portable consoles until smartphones (And games for them) reached a certain point. (Which happened late in the DS's lifespan)

If i want to game for a longer period of time i still waddle over to my PC or get my 3DS out, but for short bursts or anything internet-related, i get my iPad, i had a laptop before, but it was noisy, ran hot (More "Laptoast" than "Laptop" >_< ) and got unreliable right after the warranty expired (Figures... :P )

TL: DR version: The "Short bursts of gaming" got taken over by tablets and phones, the "Long spans of gaming" is the terrain of home consoles, so soon enough the portable consoles will be finding themselves in a spot of trouble...

MysticX commented on Stats Suggest That UK Kids Are More Likely To ...:

@CaviarMeths A tablet is bigger, which makes on-screen buttons bigger too (Less mis-tapping when typing stuff) and is less tiring on the ol' eyeballs when used for longer periods of time. (It also helps that i'm not a very "Out and about" kinda guy, so i don't need a fancy phone)

As for the original discussion: i think it's a matter of people wanting to carry just one piece of electronics with them (Or parents wanting to pay for only one :3 ), and that makes it a choice between "games" and "games and a phone and internet-access and a decent camera", when parents are making the final buying decision, multipurpose wins out...

The price of 3DS-games (Or video games in general) ATM doesn't help either, sure a good phone or tablet is more expensive, but once you have it, you're paying 3 to 5 euros per game (Or get the game for free) instead of 45 to 50, and then you'll hit that break-even point between 3DS plus games and smartphone/tablet plus games damn quickly.

I love that first article, even the very first paragraph is such a blinding flash of the obvious that i'm almost typing blind here, so a tiny install-base means fewer sales for a game? Ahoy there, captain Obvious! :P

As for racism... I don't know what to say to that, it's so phenomenally stupid that words to describe it escape me, besides, maybe light-skinned mushroom-people are mostly dark-skinned, and Nintendo are being very progressive with their portrayal of the minority! I wouldn't know, haven 't seen any humanoid mushrooms around town lately.

What i'd like...
Secret bases using Streetpass or the X/Y style online-system
More mega-evolutions
Keep Pokémon-amie and super training for EVs
Trainer customization with hat-less option and maybe clothes that refer to pokémon-types (Spooky dress, martial arts clothes, stuff like that)
More postgame content, if possible also something for slobs like me who play with pokémon they like best and don't breed three dozen of the same pokémon just to get the perfect IVs and nature (Got my butt kicked into high orbit in the X/Y battle places (Maison? Institute? I suck too much for either, love the restaurants, chateau and caves though)

MysticX commented on Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Footage R...:

@Arcamenel I'm not saying the games are rushed, i'm saying the reveal feels rushed, i'm sure development has been ongoing since X/Y released at least (basic systems and pokémon models can be reused outright), but suddenly coming out with box-shots and a release date right after hugely disappointing quarter-figures came out... A bit too well-timed to be an actual coincidence, IMO...

As for the trailer, showing the two pokémon everybody knows will be in-game (Being on the covers and all) has a bit of a "Why even bother?"-vibe, but it keeps the buzz going i suppose.

Well, that trailer wasn't very impressive at all...

I said it in another thread, but the reveal of the new pokémon-games feels a bit rushed, kind of makes me think the original reveal was set for around E3, but was pushed forward to give Nintendo some good news to bring out to counterbalance the poor earnings report...

@TopLaytonsHat I think Nintendo moved it up the ol' production-queue due to the bad sales figures for last quarter, nothing quite says "Fire up the money-printer!" as a new Pokémon game :P

I'm looking forward to the footage though, i'm hoping that Pokémon-amie is staying in some form or other...

@kobashi100 The only people who still believe that any single game (No matter how ZOMGAwesomeSauce it is) will singlehandedly put the WiiU on the fast track to success are the fanboys with reality-blocking goggles on.

The head start Nintendo had with a year of the WiiU was wiped out within months by the competition, which is pretty tragic news, and the fabled Nintendo war-chest isn't going to last forever at this rate either, i'm sure there's a pretty hefty (But stoically subdued) panic going on at Nintendo HQ right about now...

@PJR0cks But why would a developer lie about that? I'm no Nintendo-hater but "Games we make for Wii U don't sell well" seems like a perfectly legit reason to stop developing for it, so why would a developer come up with the underpowered/overcomplicated excuse?

MysticX commented on Satoru Iwata Speaks Of The Need To "Redefine" ...:

"Nintendo is a company that can do whatever they want", can they do something that actually sells now?

It's the arrogance in that statement that gets me, the casual gaming ship has sailed (The people that made the Wii a hit are now playing games on their phone/tablet), and no single game (no matter how good) is going to save the WiiU, it takes more games to maybe do that, doing what you want is a luxury for the successful, a luxury Nintendo can't really afford ATM.

I don't know what's sadder TBH: nintendo acting like it's still the late 80s and everybody lapping up whatever they do, or the people leaping to their defense with the "It's everybody else's fault! Nintendo is great!"-routine.

Nintendo is a great company, but they need to realize it's the year 2014 now, just blindly doing what they feel like isn't going to get them profit anymore, time to work with indie developers (and third-party ones for that matter) instead of grudgingly tolerating them...

Not sure if doing paid DLC is such a good idea really, the big advantage that 3DS games have over phone games for me is the "You pay once and have the full game"-thing, and starting with paid DLC is going down a rather shady path.

3DS games cost plenty as it is, last thing i want then is having to get nickle-and-dimed after that...

This is pretty weak of Nintendo, the two games that are supposed "System sellers", spaced this far apart for a system that (let's be honest here) badly needs games to shift consoles, ok, SSB for the Wii U will be utterly completely and even fully polished by the time it comes out, but by that time, will there be anybody left who cares?

@Nintendo_Ninja Wait, what? A second-hand GBA and whatever game you want to play on it is still cheaper than a WiiU and the VC-version of that game.

That's why VC is a bonus and not a main selling point, and should be treated as such, i doubt anybody is going to buy a WiiU because ZOMG GBA GAMES! (Note that i mean this in a non-anti-Nintendo sort of way)

@Trickbaby14 I don't know about music or movies, but with game consoles more sales = better support (more games) = a console that's a better investment.

How good is innovation when it's something most people don't want? Are there that many games that do anything interesting with the WiiU semi-tablet? I'm honestly curious here...

Those games actually look like fun to me :P

Nintendo could make a fortune with those, and they hardly compete with the games they put out on the 3DS (Don't tell me "Super Luigi jump" would cannibalize "New Super Mario bros."-sales :P )

Let's face it: Lots more people have smartphones than will ever have a 3DS, so we have a huge market of people who don't know nor care what Nintendo is up to with 3DS that will leap onto a well-made mobile game, so there's a big market out there...

@Senario How do you suppose they should present this news? DKC:TF was one of the very few major (maybe even console-shifting) releases this half of the year, and it failed to shift consoles, even the game-sales fell short of what was expected of a major first-party release.

NL could have said that DKC made it to #2 on the list, that's a nicer angle but doesn't change the absolute figures, which are well below expectations.

A lot of small devs are programming for PC and tablets simply because it's relatively easy to get your game up for sale, which also makes for a high number of crappy games and (especially on tablets) a lot of [shudder] freemium drek clogging stuff up, additionally, the different architecture of Nintendo devices makes porting harder (Second screen for 3ds, for instance), and one way to overcome attach rate trouble is publishing for several platforms at once...

@Tsusasi Fair enough, please point out all the good news surrounding WiiU that NintendoLife skipped in favour of "Nintendooooomed"-articles, or would you rather NL follows Nintendo's example and goes for an article-drought instead?

I'd like to think better of the WiiU (I'm loving my 3DS XL, in the "awesome games, bro!"-kinda way), but the incoming game-drought is... severe to say the least, the release calendar is pretty sparse with the EU one (According to GameFAQs) sporting a whole 5 games with actual release dates and some games with an indeterminate (Read: Not for a long while yet) release date, Nintendo's E3-lineup better be beyond legendary to salvage anything of this situation...

@Action51 Times like this i worry about gaming in general, Nintendo are at least trying to do something creative (Though not all ideas pan out as well), and they're selling the least ATM, though with the current merger/buyout frenzy i see a lot of other companies having trouble too.

I'm tired of the "Paint by numbers"-sequels to all those shooters/racers/football games in the stores here (Burnt myself on a PS3, most expensive paperweight i ever bought >_< ), tried games on my iPad but the freemium-plague is slowly killing the gaming-scene there, yet ironically enough Nintendo seem to be the ones floundering, which makes me leery to spend money on a WiiU ATM, i want to know that the console i'm buying has good prospects before i spend a lot on it, oh well, maybe later in the year things will look up a bit...

@Yasume I agree, one thing you're very unlikely to hear is "WiiU has such great virtual console games, gotta get me some of that!"

MysticX commented on Talking Point: The Watch_Dogs Wii U Delay Demo...:

@BXXL I'm sorry, i don't buy the whole "Everybody is jealous of Nintendo"-story, the reason third parties don't make WiiU-games is twofold: The WiiU's architecture is too different (Makes ports expensive to do, re-programming and all) and secondly, the "We buy Nintendo for Nintendo games"-crowd that seems to be the majority of WiiU-owners, which means that if the developers spend the time and effort to port a game to WiiU, it gets snubbed because it doesn't have Mario in it.

Publishers don't give a damn which console "wins the console war" this generation as long as they make money publishing games for it, the WiiU isn't making them any money so they ignore the WiiU, pure and simple, and no matter how hard you cry "We can do without third-party games lol!", Nintendo will need those games anyway to make their next console profitable (Nintendo can't make the games they need to be competitive on their own), the casual/soccermom market has gone to phones and tablets now, so they need to get big-name games out there and fast.

MysticX

MysticX commented on Talking Point: The Watch_Dogs Wii U Delay Demo...:

@bizcuthammer Indeed, Nintendo seems to have missed the memo that the casual gamers moved to the phone/tablet they have already, the Wii seems to have been a fluke, a casual-oriented console released right at the dawning of the casual gaming-age, now casual games are "Flappy bird" and facebook-based match-3 or freemium stuff, and Nintendo have... Mario games, and an obsession with doing stuff differently for the sake of it.

For once i'm happy that i live in Europe (All those games i had to import from the US back in the GBA and DS-days...), i'm sure NA will get pokébank soon, which by my reckoning should be next Tuesday at the latest, Nintendo understandably wants to spread out the "Imma transfer ma pokémon!"-surges to prevent mass server faceplants.

@Lionsgate The problem is that off-tv play is the one thing the vast majority of the gamepad fans come up with as reason why the gamepad is great, hardly the "change the way people play games"-goal Nintendo set for themselves, maybe most people are perfectly happy with the way they currently play games?

MysticX commented on Guest Blog: Shut up! Nothing is Wrong With The...:

i'm just afraid the "Casual games" ship has sailed, people are playing "Angry birds" and the countless match-3 games on their phones or tablets now (Because almost everybody has at least a smartphone by now, why buy a console for that?), if Nintendo wants to work with indie games, they need to go for the B-market: indie games that have a bit more depth than the usual phone/tablet fare (And as such can command a higher price than 99 eurocents), a bit more like the games on Steam than the stuff that's clogging up the app-store...

But whatever Nintendo does, they need to get started quickly, their reputation is taking a beating right now, and that is another big factor in buying decisions.

MysticX commented on Guest Blog: Shut up! Nothing is Wrong With The...:

@HugoSmits A lot of indie-games are ported to multiple platforms though, if not immediately, then in a month or so, not much advantage to be had there...

Secondly, the big money in gaming is in the masses (The people who don't browse gaming-websites and stuff, turns out we're the weird ones :P ), when have you ever seen indie-games advertised outside of occasional banner-ads in gaming websites? (Even those are mostly for freemium games) Whereas "Call of duty: Dudebro Xtreme edition" gets advertised on TV and stuff, and what sways consumers more? relatively unknown indie-games or widely advertised AAA-titles?

As for Skylanders: Pokémon (I shall call them: Pokélanders :P ), i think that would sell like hotcakes, if Digimon-rejects and Disney-characters can sell well, Pokémon can make a fortune :D

MysticX

MysticX commented on Guest Blog: Shut up! Nothing is Wrong With The...:

Wow, that's a pretty over-optimistic article...

Indie-games do not shift systems, most of them are published on several platforms anyway (Ooh, do i want a WiiU with Minecraft? Or a XBone, PS4 or even PC with Minecraft and third-party games? decisions, decisions!), people buy a console for the big games, indie-games are a bonus really.

The WiiU may well be a great machine (I'm a 3DS guy myself), but if its architecture makes is troublesome and expensive to port to (Games are a tad bigger and more complicated than they were in the early 90s), that spells trouble.

On some points it's better to follow the other guys than to do your own thing (A practice that has been biting Nintendo in the backside since the N64, the Wii just rode the pre-facebook/phone casual wave)

@CaviarMeths The issue is that modding games and copying them require pretty much the same tools ("modding" copy protection away, so to speak), so you can't really allow modding and still prevent copying, so Nintendo decided to just go all-out on the "no modding whatsoever"-route
