Wii was great because I was finally able to play an actual Mario platformer with my brother, not to mention a couple of friends too. The (purely cosmetic) ability to triple jump on enemies got me really giddy at the time as well. DS was novel at the time, especially after the four rereleases on GBA, and had some cool levels and ideas. U + Luigi U was a good pack-in for the Wii U as far as I am concerned. I have neither played 2 nor had any desire to do so.

I got to admit, I own all 4 of the games (except Luigi U) and am wondering if I should sell two of them as they are the same really... I do hold some very fond memories of playing the original two on the DS and Wii with friends but now it's just become kinda stale... I remember there was a competition to get 1 million coins in NSMB2 for AU/NZ and really tried but gave up since it was way too tedious.

There was a nice little circle on my right thumb for several weeks after finishing that. Twas good fun.

I like the NSMB series.

I take any 2D Mario I can get. Ive played the NSMB series maybe more than most. It would be nice to see a fresh take next gen.

While NSMBU was the best in my opinion, it does seem to be a bit bland. I wish they would change it up like they did in the past.

Super Mario Bros. was different from 2 which was different from 3 which was different from World.

NSMB is similar to NSMBW which is similar to NSMB2 which is similar to NSMBU.

That pretty much is the problem the series has. Not much of new aesthetics. I would personally be satisfied if they made the art style different for each game.

Also really guys there's only four of them out of which all four of them sold incredibly well so let's keep that in mind and just enjoy with the Italian plumber while we can.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

they are o.k 2D platformers, I don't mind then keeping on coming as there are not that many options on that genres (there are the recent Rayman games which I think are better than NSBM but I don't know if Ubisoft will continue to release more of those).... I don't like 3D platformers so Mario lose me with N64 and didn't grab me back until NSBM...

My favourite was the Wii one - not "new" by any means, but I found the co-op mode to be tons of fun, and at least the game was decently challenging (especially World 9). The final fight with Bowser was spectacular. And even the propeller hat was semi-new.
The Wii U one, by comparison, was a crushing disappointment. That game is just bland, slow as hell, uninspired and has zero challenge.
The first on DS was good. When it came out I thought it was immense - looking back at it, it's probably the easiest game ever, but at least it felt new by that time. The second on 3DS I have only played for one hour (I don't own a copy). I still think the coin collecting thing was a nice idea and gave it a colourful look. Also, I liked the idea of additional level that you could buy via the eShop (they should have released more of those).

I thought it was me getting tired of platform games, but I recently played the first Super Mario Bros and it's still mega - I can still enjoy platformers, it's NSMBU that stinks. I'm happy they're going to release Mario Maker because it feels like the end of NSMB as we know it - by giving us the tools to duplicate their work, they'll be forced to start anew with the next release (fingers crossed!!)

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

NSMB isn't bad, it's just that it is the same thing over, and over, and over, and over. It was actually quite fresh when it was first released. A new 2D Mario game with its own unique identity. The problem is that Nintendo has been re-releasing what basically amounts to the same game every few years. Here's NSMB. Here's NSMB on a console with multiplayer support. Here's another handheld NSMB with a coin-collecting gimmick. He's a NSMB game on our new home console that makes slight use of the Gamepad.

I think this is one reason why 3D World's initial trailer was met with so much disappointment. People were afraid it was going to be 3D Land U. Thank goodness the game turned out to have its own unique identity.

The "New" in the title was referring to them being new(er) 2D Mario platformers. [/captainObvious]
So of course they're not "new", they're were meant to be modern versions of the old games (though they missed several key components of what made SMB3 and World great, there were advancements made to the series making each better by building off the successful elements of the previous games, rather than being an "update" of the previous games).

"New" Super Mario Bros. might arguably be the most ironic name for any video game series ever (although I still think "Final" Fantasy is an extremely strong contender).

I have only played NSMB and NSMB2. I enjoyed both of them, good games.

The first one on the DS is more or less the only 2D Mario Platformer I have ever liked enough to play from start to finish.

The minigames were great too, so much fun with friends.

I got New Super Mario Bros U with the Mario Kart 8 Free game deal, and I just cannot get into it. It didn't feel..right. Theres something about Mario platformers that just turn me off to the point where I don't want to play them at all. I only remember playing through one of the New Super Mario Bros completely and that one was on the DS

MrGawain

Estimates on the 'occasionally correct' VGCharts, NSMBU has sold over 4 million copies compared to 3D Worlds 2 million copies. That's an attach rate of over 60%. Nintendo makes them because we buy them. Why do we buy them? Because they're reliable and we know their sturdy and will keep us entertained. Look at a game like W101, infinitely more exciting and innovative with great varied gameplay and a story and great acting and jokes, but most people aren't willing to risk their money on something that they don't understand.

I liked NSMBU. I LOVED W101. Both were/are worth owning and playing. NSMBU has it's place in the Wii U library. If Mario can't have a 2d platformer that 'feels like Mario', then something would be wrong with the world.

Fun games but the art style and "new" label is worn out. Never ever wish for no more 2D Mario's though, they have plenty of material to work with and that's a staple for me i'll always pick up and beat.
