Yeah, I've lost my edge, but not in gaming.

I hate the modern trend of easy and short. I WANT TO BE TESTED!!!!

If anything, the trend is toward easy and much, much too long.

Come on, friends,

Aye, that combination is horrible. Spending hours walking around shouting "Hello? Challenge? Where are uuuuuuu~"

I've not lost my edge on retro games and still love a rock hard SHUMUP,2D PLATFORMER etc, but I find myself struggling with more modern games as they can be far too long for me to have the time to complete them.I suck at FPS's and MHTri as well.

yo Machu, how you doin' man?

What's this bit for again?

Please do not provide links to sites that offer ROMs for download. Thank you -- TBD

I actually had a cousin that was much like me and he got Battletoads for Christmas one year. We spent weekends and weekends on that game for prob close to 2 yrs off and on to finally beat it. He would learn a new pattern we would perfect it. Its much easier to beat with 2 people who both know the game very well. The last few levels I would be hard pressed to be able to beat by myself these days.

Actually I have to say I kinda take back the lost my edge as Ive beaten Ninja Gaiden Sigma on Hard and Bionic Commando on the hardest level in the last year lol. Maybe its not as bad as I thought.

In some ways yes. I find a lot of games I played as a kid a bit easier now but I also give up way quicker. I don't like constantly dieing. I find a lot of oldschool 2D platformers just tedious. Contra annoys me once I hit the ice world. I've been playing through Super Mario World for the first time in probably a decade and I have 46 extra lives and am well over halfway through (making sure to unlock all the level exits). It's still frustrating though and I do often die stupid deaths.

In some ways I like where modern games are going. There's a lot less stress involved. I still find a lot of oldschool RPG's quite playable and interesting. I think I game more for the meditation aspect rather than the skill these days I have enough stress in real life.

I know what you mean. Super Mario World went from my favorite 2D platformer to my least favorite once I hit World 4 (and got my 50th Game Over ). I'd much rather play Sonic 2, where I rarely die so long as I don't majorly screw up (like fall into the same instant death pit 10 times in a row).

The Genny version goes for pretty cheap nowadays.

Is the Genesis version different from the NES one?? I own the NES one but I never played it on Genesis.

Nah, it just has better graphics. There's a Super Nintendo Version, too.

EDIT: No wait, it tones down the difficulty in some areas and makes other areas harder.

Back on topic... My gaming requirements might not have changed, but my habits sure have. The fact that I 'saved' SMG2 till I was 'in the mood' says a lot. There never used to be that hesitation, that patience, everything was 'on-launch' and 'now'.

Yaaaay, I feel old, wooooh! feel young too, it cool, for now D:

I agree. I don't think I can master games anymore....

My backlog history states that the games I have mastered where back in the 90's, my only recent one being a mascot racing game that's pretty easy.

I can be cute if I want to be, but I choose not to...as it's not my style.

Even though ive lost my touch in gaming it wont stop me from beating the games I own and that said I dont feel satisfied unless i get everything and do the best like in Mario Kart Try to get 3 Star Ranks, In Metroid Prime Scan literally everything. all my games I play until theres literally nothing left to do, even if that is playing on the hardest difficulty from the start and unlock the next hardest.

Yes, and no. I don't think I've quite lost my edge, but I've lost my edge for having a high level of tolerance to 'cheap' style of hard type games I used to just deal with in the day as I'm beyond putting up with cheap hard instead of well thought out hard games. If something is tricky and it's done right I'm good, but if it's like say a Mega Man 9 where even they admitted it was over the top with spike traps and enemies causing some required hits...I refuse to do that anymore. Sure it would help a bit more if it's really something I'm deeply into, but I'm at that point now I want a mix of some hard, normal, and a relaxation(easier but not boring easy) type game to mess with. Usually I'll go with the moderate type or some easy because unless I'm truly in the mood for something nasty it'll turn me off right quick.

As far as games I come back to that gets a little dicey. Often I can still get through the stuff I used to, but at times it comes up as something I just can't and I'll get furious over it and possibly pop off as I had done it a 100x before and feel I should do better and get tweaked off. Or, it will just be a bad run of it and I come back later and it's ok, or it's one of those like I said above types where it's just cheap hard, or it was like many in the 8bit era and 16bit too that were just really crappily made and the problem with playing it just really is bad design and I'll have nothing to do with that.

I suppose there's also just the classic out of practice and after applying oneself for a bit things get better. Back in 1991/2 I dominated the arcade cab and SNES copies of SF2 and MK1, SF2 moreso. SF2 I could wax on max(lv7) with all but Zangief and Dhalsim(6 on them) and these days while I could finish the game with anyone I know I probably get worked over much over standard (3) or a little above(5.)

For me, a lot of it has to do with simply not having the same amount of time to devote to a game. Back when i was a little larval Shpydar, i could spend an entire weekend non-stop with a game (which in the NES days was necessary), but now my available gaming time is far less, so i'm less willing to pour hours into an individual game during a gaming session. Shigy bless the VC save-state!

You got that right, unless you're some mooch on welfare, your parents(as an adult), or just a kid there's just no way to dedicate so much to a game unless you only get like 1 a month or less to truly get at that hours of committing time you did back in the days to be so 'expert' at something.

@TBD.... sorry I wasnt promoting the download just the browser play, completely understand and it wont happen again

@Machu... dont feel bad man, I only play Mario gasmes now when Im in the mood either. I used to play them for hours on end, I guess its a tiring of the genre or something but I can only stomach a few hours here and there of them anymore.

No video games aren't an olympic sport or even career in law enforcement, so no I don't believe I've lost any of my edges.

It depends what you mean by "old". I'm a teenager, and I grew up in mid-1990's on easy stuff like Paper Mario, Super Mario 64, and Super Smash Bros. I guess I never really got any "edge"...
