different reasons. they're redundant, they're in danger of becoming nasty, they've gone hopelessly off topic, they violate certain rules, or there was no point to the thread to begin with and it's just taking up space on the website. those are the most common reasons.

Usually for the reasons listed - going off-topic, descending into needlessly vitriolic or abrasive posting, duplicating content, all sorts of stuff. It's also a commonly accepted piece of necessary forum upkeep.
Yeah, some times I can see a topic should get locked as people are getting a bit silly / personal... There are limits to communication in forums so moderation can really improve how they function.
The only time my threads locked down: once where I locked my own before locking became exclusive to mods and a duplication (TBD locked it Thought I wouldn't be a casualty )
Speaking in the forums is like being in a world full of moderation. The reasons topics are locked are to keep the peace, as well as the reasons others listed.
