Topic: Dog Peed on 3DS XL

Last night I noticed my dog had peed on my 3DS XL. 'Why'... 'how'... you might ask something so absurd might happen? Well, without getting into a lot of detail, the 3DS was beside me, on the floor while I laid on the couch. My dog decided for some reason to pee on it and it sat there for a half hour.

I was horrified when I discovered what happened.

I quickly cleaned the outside and opened it but it appeared dry on the inside and seemed to be working fine. The next day (today) I am noticing the circle pad does not move left or right or sometimes, entirely on its own. Other than that, things seem okay. I'm not sure what else to do. I've googled some advice but, haven't found much. It's in a bowl of rice. I've created a repair ticket with Nintendo but I'm sure they'll found out it came into contact with moisture and want to charge me.

I realize this is a long shot, but anyone got any advice beside 'don't let your dog pee on your 3DS'? =)

How bad was the mess?

To be honest, it probably came in contact with something that causes it to be erratic. For the time being, I would turn your 3DS off and remove the back cover and battery and do a thorough inspection for any moisture.

Well geez, guess your dog isn't a Nintendo fan.

I think you're doing the right things, urine is usually mostly water with urea and a trace amount of various chemicals and enzymes depending on diet and bodily liquids - in other words, the biggest danger is water damage, which you're treating by putting it in rice. Refrain from charging it or turning it on to make sure it remains unpowered while the inside dries. Of course, the other risk then is the trace amounts of other chemicals. Try carefully wiping it down with a moist (but wrung out) cloth, and anywhere it is sticking you can try compressed air. Failing any of that, Nintendo is who can help, unfortunately they may charge you since it wasn't their fault, though it's possible they'll cover it anyways. Either way, it is likely they can help. Long term damage is unlikely given the composition of urine but to fix sticking or any other superficial damage, the system might need to be opened up, which you can't do without voiding the warranty entirely and then Nintendo likely won't ever help if you need it in the future. I'd be surprised if it did any irreversible damage to the system though. Good luck!

Also, as long as your careful not to power it on, moisture shouldn't be a problem unless you drench it in water. I'd say the only real worry is stickiness.

1. Remove Oculus Rift. If this turns out to be reality, proceed to step 2. Else, resume virtual reality.
2. Do not let your 3DS get peed on by your dog. (loopholes )
3. Okay, so you actually read this far. Well then, by leaving it off when wet you should be fine. I believe it might be a coincidence though, that the circle pad is messed up? If it was closed there's no way to really get to the circle pad.
4. Train dog to pee on Sony, not Nintendo products.

I do think it's odd about the circle pad, esp. since it did not appear to be wet anywhere near that area. However, it also sat for a half hour or so, I believe. That's plenty of time to absorb liquid I would think.

I would need to own Sony products in order to train the dog that way but I like your way of thinking! =)

Even though it's just the circle pad that's having trouble? Trust me, I'd gladly replace it if I thought there were risk of losing my data. Should I be more concerned than I am?

I will try the compressed air. Hopefully something comes of that. Thanks for the tip! =)

On the outside, it was soaked. On the inside, it seemed entirely dry. So the top and bottom of the DS were basically sitting in urine for a half hour. I'm still horrified thinking about it actually.

It was peed on, who knows. Pee is corrosive and unsanitary. It could be like a time bomb. Waiting to fail when you less expect it.

And it is already marked. Your dog will do it again as soon as he gets the chance.

Be sure to use hand sanitizer after each use.

Other than that, basically what everybody else said. My best bet would be carefully wiping it and using compressed air.

I agree. I'd just get a new system and transfer. A repair costs so much I'd rather just have an all-new system: you get new Club Nintendo coins, a new battery, and a system with no pee on it. Plus, you don't have to wait for your system to come back from Nintendo, and you'll still have your old system to streetpass with if you want.

Also, make sure you're washing your hands after you use the bathroom. The dog might have peed on it if it smelled traces of urine on it, but even sweat has urea in it, so it could have just been from your sweaty hands touching it. Just try to keep your 3DS out of reach of your dog or stored in a ziploc bag I guess.

I agree with Morpheel. If I were in your position, I would be at the store right now getting a new one to transfer to. It doesn't appear to be a huge issue NOW but it could turn into something worse in the future. I used to work at dunkin donuts. One time a girl spilled coffee on the counter under which my 3ds was sitting in its case. The coffee got on the case and on the corner of the system, possibly getting into the r button slightly. That night I got a new one and transferred everything over. Was my old system ok? Probably. Was i willing to risk it no matter how small the risk may have been? Hell no.

I'd say the risk of long term damage exists but it's not incredibly high, while urine does have corrosive chemicals, the composition is almost entirely water, any damage would likely be apparent fairly quickly. As Moorpheel said, dogs do have a tendency to pee where they've already marked (that detail slipped my mind, so if you decide to keep the system, don't leave it within reach of the dog, it's highly likely he'll do so again, which increases the chance of it getting damaged. Like I said, the chances of serious long term damage are quite low (having pets and electronics, I've learned things), but there is still a slim chance, if you are incredibly worried you could buy a new one. Nintendo will replace any affected parts (can't guarantee whether they'd charge you) if you go that route, but I personally wouldn't be too worried about serious damage. There is also the risk of it smelling like dog urine, if so it may need a more thorough cleaning, hopefully that's not an issue. And sanitation may be an issue, I'd say if there's any stickiness on it, get some sort of cleaner (you may have to look at labels to find what's best) and be careful cleaning it. I don't want to GUARANTEE it will never have problems, because that chance always exists, but unless you doused it in urine, the chances of damage are relatively minimal, keep an eye on it and first try to treat the sticking. And see what Nintendo says, they've seen all sorts of things I'm sure and know how to deal with them. People have pets and accidents happen.

@ogo79 Possibly the best thing you can do whenever your devices get wet. Rice draws out and soaks any moisture it can come in contact with. Phone dropped in the toilet? Put it in rice and 9 times out 10, the phone will be saved.

In my opinion, Yes.
The more I read this, the more I think Back-up your data, now!
Anything I've ever had that came into contact with moisture FAILED.

I'd get all your data onto another console ASAP, whilst you still can.
